Everything was wonderful, however, the after math of eating not so much. Depending on the different meals I've gotten there, its hasn't worked for my digestive system. After eating the food which tasted delicious, it starts to upset the stomach and good things haven't come out of it. The restaurant definitely needs to work on how much of something they put into their food.

Ok so I have been to Come Back Inn many times over the years. I have always found the food average. Not bad but not memorable either. I decided to try something new at our most recent visit because the last few times I have eaten anything with their red sauce I have gotten terrible heart burn from it. I opted this time to try the Greco. It was described as linguine with spinach, pine nuts, sundried tomatoes, onions , kalamata olives, and feta cheese in a light herbed olive oil sauce. The description was good except when it came to the sauce. It was drowning in several inches of liquid that was much too thin to be just herbs and olive oil and it tasted more like a vinaigrette dressing. It had that tangy sweet and sour quality to it Instead of just the herbed oil flavor which was off putting since I was expecting something much different. Also we had a bit of trouble with our server. We were a large party and we had called earlier that week to see if we could make a reservation. They said we couldn't make a reservation but that as long as half of our party had arrived we could be seated anytime. We decided to arrive early to avoid a long wait and with more than half of our party there we requested a table for ten. The waitress rudely told us that it was their policy not to seat groups until everyone had arrived and when we mentioned that we had called previously and were told that only half was necessary to be seated she said that if we didn't like it we could take it up with a manager. We didn't talk to the manager but we were confused by her rude attitude. Then of course when we were seated she ended up waiting on us. She did seem surprisingly more friendly to us once her tip was on the line. She really was a decent server once we got seated but the earlier rudeness was hard to overlook.
Review Source:I've only been here once recently so I'm basing this on the one dish I had. I got the gorgonzola pasta and it was absolutely amazing. There was enough food for my dinner that night and lunch the next day. I've been thinking about that dish since I've had it and I can't wait to go back and order it again.
The price is right for the amount of food you get and the service was great the night I went. I'd definitely recommend this if you're craving Italian.
I have never had a bad meal here or at the Spring Street location in Jeffersonville.
Years ago I always enjoyed the chicken & spinach calzone with alfredo instead of marinara and it was comfort food at its best!
Last night at the Swan street location I showed up about 8:45 for an impromptu celebration with friends. Â We ordered the Caponata antipasti which was slightly fried pita chips (rich!) and sicilian salsa of olives, tomatoes, and eggplant. Uh, YUM. Â
Our server, Karen was a delight. Â She was attentive and once I asked about eggs as an ingredient, she was very keen to help me find things I was willing to eat since I am almost strictly vegan. Â She anticipated we would want our appetizer with the cheese on the side for those that wanted it. Â Awesome.
My entree was a 10' pizza with mushrooms and spinach, no cheese. Â The crust was made with some egg but, as I said, I'm vegan 95% of the time. Â The crust is thin, the sauce is flavorful, thick and bright. Â Nothing about it was heavy, just really tasty. Â I would have preferred a bit crunchier crust and more spinach but, that's me.
Drinks stayed full, atmosphere is divey and more like a hometown bar. Â Very small so if you're big on elbow room or high class, this isn't your place. Â It's just a fabulous neighborhood spot, open til 10 on weekdays and some of the best homestyle italian around.
Great place to get comfort food!!!! Â Great service. Â I came here with friends and our waiter was super nice and on the ball. Â The other staff was nice as well. Â
I got the Sausage Italian Bake it was good, although I wish I would have gotten the gorgonzola (recommended by a regular).
Will definately be going back!!!
I lived just a few blocks down Breckinridge when I first moved here and never knew about this place. Â File that under GIANT FAIL. Â Decided that we had to try it when I saw that it was part of the Louisville Originals.
My husband and I dined on a Friday night, a bit early for us with it being around 5:45pm, but we were starving. Â I'm glad that we had arrived when we did, because the restaurant was over half full when we arrived and filled up very quickly. Â We were seated within moments, however, and our server (Mike M.) was extremely attentive through out. Â To be perfectly honest, his service was as near to perfect as anywhere I've been in Louisville, and bumped this from a three- to four-star review.
We were seated in a corner booth (my favorite), and I was too thoroughly engrossed in what we were going to eat to take in my surroundings until after we had ordered. Â It is like the epitome of neighborhood Italian place, at least back east. Â It reminded me of home and my family, and I dug it.
The food was solid, Italian-American cuisine. Â Comfort food. Â Not fancy, but definitely tasty. Â The antipasto wontons were probably my favorite part. Â We also split a caesar salad before sandwiches. Â I had the Chicago-style roast beef (Philadelphia is still better) and he had a gyro. Â Good food for the money - definitely worth the trip.
We ended up here for my birthday last Saturday night. I was in town visiting friends and family, and we were hoping to go to Hammerhead's, but the wait was too long. Dammit, i'll get to eat there eventually! Come Back Inn is next door, and the wait was a little shorter.
The antipasta wontons were crazy delicious, but should be called antipasta eggrolls. they're packed with cheese and herbs, and the sauce served to dip them in was so delicious.
I had the gorgonzola pasta. My only gripe was that I ordered it with roasted garlic, and I could barely find any garlic added to the dish!
This isn't going to be pasta like your momma makes at home. But for a dinner with good friends, this place is great. Drinks are cheap, wait staff is nice, and I will more than likely return on my next visit to Louisville (which is a city that I would give 5 stars on Yelp!).
I've been coming to this spot for 15 years and it's always predictably excellent. There's nothing fancy about the interior with the wood paneling and well-worn booths, but that doesn't matter when you're consuming your tasty meal.
If it's your first time, or if you've never tried these items, I recommend the antipasto wontons, the grilled steak gorgonzola salad and the gorgonzola pasta. This is the perfect meal for two, as you can split all the items and still have leftovers.
This is one of the first places I take out-of-town guests because it's a hidden gem.
$7 additional dollars for meat sauce? that's not a typo. I ordered the build your own pasta and asked for meat sauce instead of traditional marinara. the server actually said to me "that's an additional $7". LIKE WHAT?!
I asked she confirm that with her manager and when she returned to the table, she stated that chef said their bolognese sauce is expensive to make and costs more than marinara... I then had to have a 5 minute conversation explaining to her that meat sauce and bolognese sauce were the same thing. The server was confused and recommended I order the meat sauce to save money. ARGHHH
My pasta dish was actually good.. although the server didnt bring me exactly what i ordered, it was still good. My date's dish... not so good.
who knew "baked chicken with vegetables" meant a bowl of cheese soup with chunks of chicken tossed in.
I'm a tough critic when it comes to Italian.
The only thing i can confidently say was good: the meatballs. that's all folks.
I must start by declaring my bias love for Italian food. Being right around the corner from Hammerheads, it is the perfect backup plan when your too hungry to deal with the wait. Its a dimly lit bar/ resteraunt that has a pretty extensive menu- most of which involve a bowl, pasta, meat, red sauce, and cheese. Â Pretty simple- but it doesn't take a whole lot to make a delicious italian dish that I enjoy everytime!
Review Source:This restaurant has a doppelganger in my hometown 8.5 hours away--both of which I like to summarize as offering Chef Boyardee style Italian food. Not that Italian food is known for its complexity, but their dishes are noodle and sauce heavy. And there's a lot of both of those on the plate. It's cheap for how big the portion sizes are, so there's that...I mean, there's totally a place for this kind of food in my heart, but the kind of craving where you want lots of greasy carb-heavy food just doesn't surface very often for me.
Their pasta greco is alright and I've had another pasta dish with another olive oil based sauce I enjoyed, but the ingredients are not the most fresh.
Why do I keep going back? Well, Hammerheads gets really busy and I don't like to travel far when I'm hungry.
When I travel for business, I often get the advice of the people I work with to recommend a good place for dinner. This was one of those recommendations as a surprising place with an unusual menu. This is in Germantown, a part of town that has some gems but is still in the process of being revitalized so the outside is not so impressive. Inside, the first thing noticed is the large old-time bar and backbar of beautiful wood and glass...very impressive as were all the old pictures on the walls. I was greeted by Monique and seated and served my drink immediately. They had some specials and a large variety of pasta and other casual italian fare. I opted for the special of duck with wild mushroom ragu which had a very flavorful sauce of wine, garlic, tomato and herbs over fettucini. I also ordered a house salad with mixed greens, lots of cheese, and delicious little tomatos and shaved onion rings. They make all their own dressings and the ranch I chose was delicious over the very fresh greens. The chef tonight was Lance and he did well. On the way out, Monique and all the other employees said goodnight like I was a regular at Cheers or something. A nice place with friendly people and a well executed menu. I will make a point of returning the next time in town.
Review Source:Hideaway Italian Cuisine
This Germantown Restaurant is located right next to Hammerheads and is a great option when waiting an hour for a tight seat is a bit too much. This restaurant is also a great option if you are looking for comfort classic Italian food.
My group came in during an hour wait at the other restaurant next door and were sat immediately. A lot of the dishes come in a large bowl slathered in amazing sauce. For me, I expect my Italian to be messy and so appreciate the splash guard bowls.
Cost wise it is fairly inexpensive, but pricey enough to be a solid date place. The wine is not very elaborate, but okay for your basic Chianti.
Our other friends were Jersey Italian and stated the spaghetti and meatballs were pretty tasty and recommended my four star Yelp review. I figure between the causal laid back vibe of the restaurant, the taste of the food, and the endorsement of someone from New Jersey warrants you to visit and try it for yourself.
One of the best Mediterranean American "mom & pop" shop restaraunts in the city. Large portions. Be ready for Doggie box. Â Limited menu but everything is really good!!! LOVE THE MARINATED OLIVES!!! Not a large wine list, but not really limited either, full bar. I like the gyro dinner. I've also had the Amatraciana and the Carbonara, they are really good too! My guy gets Ravioli. It's also really good! YUMMM! Service is good, especially for the large crowds it draws into a tiny diningroom. Drawbacks: very limited space and it is all crammed with tables. Noise level is always very loud due to crowds. Not enough walking space between tables.
Review Source:It's been a really long tim since I have been to the Come Back Inn. I heard they changed management and it was server run. Thank goodness. No offense to the people that ran it before...but they were loud and brash and often rude. So, we stopped going. Well...I'm happy to report that the Come Back is BACK! The food is still amazing. And the atmosphere is just lifted and light.
We had a group of 6 at 6pm (early enough I thought). We were seated immediately and holy moly...it filled up to capacity FAST! Great to see!
We all had a myriad of items from the shrimp/chipotle cream sauce linguine (I heard it was kick ass), the rosemary ham on ciabatta sandwich...which looked HUGE and delightful, the italian beef sandwich (the guy eating it grunted in delight the whole time), jumbo cheese ravioli (the marinara is just so good), fettucine alfredo, a classic and the kid eating it absolutely devoured it. I had the Greco. It was light and so good.
Yes, the house salad is enough for 2. And the bleu cheese is peppery and good.
Go. Enjoy. Simple italian with no frills, and easy on the pocketbook. You will have left overs!
Went there with my wife for an early Valentine's dinner since the kids were with grandparents. Â It had been long time since we had been so I was looking forward to it. Â The weather was a little off so it was not as crazy crowded as it sometimes is. Â We were seated right away.
First of all, let me say that I have always loved this place. Â OK, now for the food.
For an appetizer we split an asparagus/prociutto crustini. Â I was skeptical but is was solid. Â I would not have minded a little more toasting on the bread, but the flavors blended well and I enjoyed it. Â For a salad, we split the capo insulata. Â This could be a meal in itself. Â It is a slad with povolone, salami, olives tomatoes and other goodies on it. Â I got it with crumbled Feta added and Blue Cheese dressing on the side. Â Please take my advice and get the Blue Cheese dressing. Â It is incredible. Â I have heard they make it themselves.
For the main course, my wife got the wild mushroom linguini with garlic cream sauce. Â She loved it. Â I had a taste and would have been happy with it myself.
I went basic with linguini with sausage and marinara. Â Solid food. Â
All in all, a great visit to one of my solid favorites. Â I would have gone five stars, but the restroom was dirty and the server was a little chatty. Â Also, she said she didn't like some of the things that we were ordering. Â Not a good way to sell.
But I will be back as often as my low carb diet allows. Â It is a place I will go when I want to treat myself.
I had heard about this place from friends so I tried going here a couple of times. The first time it was closed so I ended up at Rocky's on the river.
The dining room is basic with part drop ceiling and part something else. It sits behind a more inviting bar which is what you see from the front window.
For the most part, the food was very good. It seemed fresh with the exception of the crap cake appetizer which were okay, but slightly overcooked. They almost seemed like they might have been frozen and re-thawed.
I had the Greco which was Linguine, spinach, calamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes, red onion, feta, garlic and pine nuts served with an herbed olive oil. (description taken from their menu)
It was tasty but messy. My shirt had oil stains all over it when I was done.
My friend had the Ahi Tuna salad special and it was nicely seared and seasoned well.
For the area, it was the best I've had so I give it an extra star. If I were in another city, I would have only given it 3 stars.
Every time I've been to the Come Back Inn, I have enjoyed my meal. Â It's not earth shattering, life changing cuisine. Â It's just good food. Â
My red wine was served cold - not cool, COLD - the other night, so I'm keeping my 5th star, but after it sat on the table a few minutes, it was just great. Â Heck, had the server not been quite so prompt in delivering it, it may have warmed up before I was any wiser.
Great little neighborhood restaurant. Â A local will probably hold the door for you and tell you to have a good night. Â Even on your first visit, you'll feel like a regular.
The place was very crowded on the night I visited... perhaps too crowded for me. In fariness, it was a Friday night and, after all, it wouldn't be that crowded if it wasn't a good place. The dining area is on the small to medium size, but there were enough people in there to fill up a typical steakhouse chain restaurant. I will visit again... I just want to be sure I'm in the mood for a very noisy crowd (this is usually fine with me). I suspect it may not be so crowded mid-week.
The place has everything you want and expect in a well seasoned neighborhood restaurant. The older age of the building added to the atmosphere. There was a bar for those wanting to stop in for a drink. The menu, consisting of lots of pastas, pizzas, sandwiches, and other Italian eats, provided a decent number of items to choose from. The food I had (a baked pasta w/ sausage) tasted great and was inexpensive.
I saw many families and folks of all ages dining there. I think anyone would find it a welcoming atmosphere. Though crowded, I still rank 4 stars because I thought it was a cool place and the food was good. I wish it was in my neighborhood.
The best part about this place is the atmosphere! Â It's got that nice, pub-like ambiance with wooden paneled walls and random things hanging on the walls.
It was for sure packed on a Friday night. Â Unfortunately, my chicken pasta dish left a few things to be desired. Â The chicken was chewy, and the sauce tasted like it had rubbing alcohol in it. Â Service was also very sluggish. Â
I hear their bloody mary's are killer though.
Stopped in to the Come Back Inn while visiting with a friend who lives in the neighborhood, and we had a great dinner. Nothing is spectacular here, but everything is rock-solid -- the service, the food, the wine, etc. It's clearly a neighborhood joint, but there's something endearing about a bit of wear and tear that feels like you've come home.
Review Source:Good little hole-in-the-wall place that seems to have been a neighborhood staple for 50 years but has been around for about 15. I love their wedding soup nice comfort food. Always get their specials- they offer nice little touches without going overboard on sauces. The chicago italian sandwich is a meal in itself.Good beer selection to wash down the delicious offerings.
Sit in a booth so you can look over the historic pictures of Louisville. Waitstaff is laid back and helpful.
