Came here for brunch with my boyfriend. For some reason, I thought I'd be "healthy" on this day and I ordered the Mixed Berry Yogurt. It was good, but my mouth was drooling over the pancakes and omelette dishes at tables near and far! Next time I go, I WILL order something carby, buttery, and sweet to my heart's content. Also, I know this is a weird comment, but my Diet Coke was the freshest and coldest and tastiest Diet Coke of my life. I don't know how else to explain that.
ANYWAY.... this place is very large and has an old diner feel to it. The menu is absolutely gigantic and has everything you can think of on it. A patron walking out as we walked in informed us that, "The omelettes here are amazing." So I guess I trust his opinion. Next time I'll order one.
If you check in, you get 10% off the bill! Nice!
Overall: it was okay. I think anyone could find something they like on the menu. It's a good brunch spot if you're with a big group.
My friend and I were violently ill from the food we ate there last night. When I called to tell them how sick we were [to prevent them from serving more contaminated food to other customers] the manager on duty informed me that it was IMPOSSIBLE for us to have food poisoning since the symptoms only come to light after 24hrs  - which is untrue.
She then alluded that because we came into the restaurant after we went to the bar, that our symptoms were most likely due to our hangovers. Having had many hangovers - I know that the digestive issues we had are not from alcohol, but rather from food poisoning.
The manager also told me that because there were so many ingredients in the pancakes, quesadilla, breakfast sausage, and bacon that there was really no way of knowing what made us sick... uh... what? You think that looking into this is too much work? Really? I'm pretty sure that food safety should be your number one priority.
She never asked for my name or phone number to follow up and dismissed my claim entirely. She was rude and frankly I find it shocking that she was not more distressed about this situation. I was not asking for my money back, nor was I blaming her personally for this incident - I just wanted to make sure that they were aware of what happened to us.
I'm a reasonable person and this ordeal was not well handled by management. I wil never again be a patron at a restaurant where the manager is so unconcerned about the well being of the customer. Shame on you lady.
I don't like slamming places. I know people work hard and do their best. I know people have a pretty wide variety of opinions on food.
In this case I just don't care.
The worst brunch I have ever had. Period. I'm talking worse than that burger joint on the corner that will scramble you some eggs in the morning for $3.99. Everything tasted like I was licking a salt block. It was shocking how badly they can screw up breakfast food. Extremely overpriced too. Go across the street to Peasantry and get an amazing brunch for the exact same price per plate.
Two points for a huge menu and not giving me food poisoning.
just ok. Honestly, the place itself is rather forgettable, but they counter that with having relatively solid food options. The breakfast menu is long and if you are bad with making decisions, this is not the menu you want to read.
The place itself is like a traditional diner, with some nice touches, like a patio and free parking. They have breakfast specials, as well as drink specials that are posted outside on a blackboard.
I went there with dad for brunch. We had the mexican skillet, it comes with ground beef, potatoes and scrambled eggs, with spicy cheese and tacos. The food was good, like I said, a solid option. The wait staff was prompt and attentive and the food came out quickly. You have to pay at the counter, and they do take cc. However, the portions are huge and one skillet was enough for both of us, with a little left over.
I'm one of those people who just love a good greasy spoon diner. The Edge didn't look greasy at all when myself & 3 snazzy friends stopped in for some late night grub Saturday night, but it did have a definite 'diner' ambiance. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
I can tell a lot about a diner from its coffee. Â The Edge's coffee was tasty. Since it was late, I tried not to drink too much for fear of bouncing around off of caffeine for the next 4hours. But I could drink that coffee all day long. The waitress was polite, & our food came pretty quickly. As I stated in previous reviews, I'm the kind of person who eats breakfast foods regardless of the actual time of day, so I ignored the dinner portion of the menu & ordered a spinach omelette with pancakes & a side of potatoes (not hash browns). Â The rest of my dining companions ordered breakfast foods as well. Â When the servers brought out our food, everyone's eyes got big & we realized we'd have to spread ourselves onto an adjoining table- the portions were HUGE. Â The omelette was packed full of spinach & cheddar cheese, and bigger than my forearm. The country potatoes were yummy little nibbles that I just know came from a frozen bag somewhere, but I don't even care. The High Priestess of this meal was the short stack of pancakes, though. They were nearly the circumference of the plate they were on, and each was fluffy as a freshly laundered baby blanket. (Not that I've ever tried to eat such a thing.) Everything arrived super hot just the way I like it, & even though there was no way I was going to be able to finish all of that yummy grub, I gave it the ol' college try. I fell in love with those pancakes that night. 2 other friends got pancakes too, & we all looked around at each other, knowing we were concurrently smitten. Another friend ordered an orange juice with his breakfast that he never got (and lol @ the waitress asking him if he still wanted it after he was finished with his meal), but we weren't charged for it.
All in all we had lots of laughs, a great late night meal, & decent service. I haven't stopped thinking about those pancakes yet. They even reheated well the next day. I would try to close with some clever pun, but it's almost breakfast time & all I can think is "Me want pancakes..."
Where to begin....
My friend and I came here for drinks, unsure of what to do for dinner. She got a cocktail which tasted like Koolaid. My beer was ok. Â
We noticed there were a couple of flies that would just not go away. So after noticing a pattern we decided to move the menus to an empty table. Problem solved. Dirty menus? Check please!
Needless to say we did not eat there and we left immediately..... after finishing our drinks.
We went on Christmas morning. Â My son had an eggs benedict selection which he LOVED and said the eggs were cooked perfectly. Â
I had rum runner pancakes - tasty w/coconut and pineapple but ZERO hint of the promised rum. Â :-(
My boyfriend opted for a skillet that he liked too. Â The marble rye toast he ordered with it was impressive thick slices.
Coffee was ok and our server kept the refills flowing. Â Impressive that they provide all the flavored creamer selections - it's the little things that can make me happy.
The tempting desserts in the case looked mouthwatering and we'll be back at some point for coffee and cake.
WARNING! Avoid the meat loaf (and possibly any other meat dish) - I dined here this past week and was served a meat loaf with pieces of raw meat in it! I know meat load and this meat loaf at The Edge has been very good on past visits. However when I was there the last time, something didn't taste quite "right." First of all the meat loaf was barely warm and I detected "chewy" chunks inside the meat. On close inspection I found several small bits and chunks of RED raw meat, cold and uncooked, and some small globs of reddish-purplish meat, also cold. Hello, The Edge, not sure how you managed to get raw meat into a cooked meat loaf, but raw meat can kill customers.
I was also disappointed to observe a very aggressive female manager-type berating a waitress in clear earshot of customers. Honey, you are rude and unprofessional, if you do something like that. Also you need to pay some attention to the restrooms. The one on the restaurant side, not the bar side, was atrocious.
I had high hopes for the cosmetic makeover of a tired worn out Golden Nugget into an updated fresh place. Raw meat, rude manager and dirty bathroom. Epic fail.
I secretly live for Chicken and waffles. This place has a good "chicken waffle" that satisfies my need. No, it isn't "Lake Merritt Cafe" in Oakland but it'll do the trick. I also love the fact that they give you flavored creamers with your coffee. It is basically the ONLY thing I order from here. It's a nice upgrade from the golden nugget that used to reside here. They have a full bar and great selection of cakes and pies. Tempting but after I finishe my chicken waffle, I could not imagine trying to eat a piece of 4 layer red velvet cake.
Review Source:Big fan of The Edge Bar & Grill. Â Huge menu selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner any time of the day/night. Their portions are big so come in with an appetite. Â They are also open late so you can stumble in after hours for a good meal. Â Parking is free in the back but can get pretty packed during peek hours. On weekends brunch & lunch can get really busy and there is usually a 20+ wait, but the hosts are attentive and friendly so you know they are doing the best they can to accommodate everyone during those busy rushes.
I definitely recommend this place to my friends.
Meh..
If you're around the neighborhood and absolutely starving, give it try but otherwise not really worth it. The edge is an expensive diner that doesn't satisfy. The lunch menu has just one veggie option, the burger with a patty which tastes like cardboard. The breakfast menu, obviously has a lot more options. The hubby got the breakfast burrito which was huge but the flavors were flat and it was nothing special. The service was attentive... too attentive if you ask me.
Hailing from New Jersey where diner food is one of the highlights of living in such a great state. Since moving out to Chicago a year ago, it's been a struggle to find a decent diner experience that has a luscious menu. Well, The Edge comes damn near close to a typical Jersey diner experience.
The menu was HUGE and it offered such wonderful items such as chicken and waffles to skillet combinations for breakfast to traditional American food fare, plus beer!
The wait staff was extremely nice and courteous. I really appreciated that she kept on offering to get me more hot water for my hot tea and a nice selection of tea to choose from. Being a tea drinker, I rarely get asked if I want a refill or offered lemon. That was a big plus in my book!
Things were clean and was a nice place to eat. The music definitely could have been a lot lower. It was difficult to hold a conversation so early in the morning when everyone is mumbling. One big draw back for me was that I had to keep my coat on while eating at a table near the window. It was quite drafty. They need to invest in insulated windows PRONTO before winter arrives.
I definitely recommend this place at any time. Looking forward to going back and trying the waffles, pancakes and sandwiches!!!
I walked into The Edge Bar and Grill on a Thursday morning with a ravenous appetite and left fat and happy. Â Other Yelpers were not kidding when they said the portions were huge - the Farmer's Smoked Sausage Omelette was a delectable delight.
I recommend dining at The Edge in the off-hours as opposed to the busy nights when the place is littered with the after-hours drunk crowd, rendering poor service from the wait staff. Â In my case, my server Brenda was very polite and attentive.
I will definitely be back for more.
Menu is very long, so don't go right before catching a flight, you might miss it. Â Food is always great, sort of on the diner side, but good. Â Service is nothing to write home about. Â Sat at bar once with one other friend, douchey bartender never refilled my water unless I asked directly, weird. Â Never had a server come over and do the usual "anything else?" "how is everything?", nothing - just dropped off food. Â Then had to track her down for the bill. Â Now, this is one server, maybe she was having a bad day, I will go back - she won't stop me.
Review Source:We went to The Edge for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised! Â We did arrive with very low expectations as this really is the same old Golden Nugget. Â But pulling out the old booths and giving the walls a face-lift really did make a big difference with the atmosphere. Â I ordered the MultiGrain Pancakes with Fruit and Granola and they were Delicious. Â My husband ordered the Biscuits and Gravy and the Denver Skillet. Â I am always nervous with Biscuits and Gravy as half the time the gravy has no sausage and its just bland, but this version was very good with actual sausage and peppery spice. Â
If you are looking for an upscale or unique breakfast, this is not your place. Â But, if you want a solid basic breakfast this is good choice! Â We will be going back!
What's the old adage? You can put lipstick on a pig...
Golden Nug... 'scuse me, The EDGE, certainly did slap on a new shade of lipstick. And eyeliner, brow liner, shadow, concealer, blush, false lashes and even teeth whitening strips, but this farmer knows its swine.
The Edge gave itself a very nice, and probably pricey, makeover with a new awning, siding on the building, and obtained the little no-name coffee cafe next door to add on a bar to its diner. The bar is The Edge's best attribute. It has garage windows, a handful of high-top tables and plenty of seating at the bar. They have decorated nicely and have a decent amount of holiday decor at appropriate times. I say a decent amount because to me, there are never enough holiday decorations. Ever. I prefer the autumnal cocktails, like spiked coffee and apple cider on the menu. Appetizers are half price on the weekends, which means it's a budget-friendly hangover option for game days.
The dining room, however, retained it's late-night feel. The standard tables and chairs, the 59-page menu that sorta says the same thing over and over- "melted cheese, battered and deep fried, bread, coleslaw". The pie is still stupid tasty and the red velvet cheesecake is sinful. But the chicken still deserves a ? stamped on it and the sandwiches rival the size of an armadillo, but lack flavor.
It's still the Durkins/Duffy's/Crossroads after party show during their 24/7 weekends, and the old men crowd early in the mornings reading their papers, which means one thing: that pig didn't pick a deep enough shade of lipstick because even drunks and old people figured out who they are.
Went here for brunch on a Sunday. Â It was stupidly crowded.
I ordered the rum runner French toast. Â Pineapple and coconut somehow combined into a flavorless mess. Â How?
My friend ordered the Oreo pancakes, which were rich and delicious, but it would be hard to eat more than one.
As far as service, we were largely ignored. Â
There's no reason to return to the Edge.
Insanely over priced mimosas.
This place has had a major facelift and overall has been greatly improved. But the one thing I couldn't get over is the price of their mimosas. I went here for brunch on a Saturday. The house wine is $5 and Guinness is $3 so it would never cross my mind that their mimosas would be priced at $8 a glass (until I saw the bill)! Be warned fellow yelpers!
Big menu and good bloody marys. Our waitress forgot to bring ranch dressing, though, and the food was ok. When it came time to split our bill, we had to wait at the front counter for about 10 minutes because they couldn't find an employee who knew how to split the bill three ways. People were pushing past us and trying to get by, so that was really awkward and we just wanted to leave. I think my other friends were overcharged, too, with the added tip. The Edge is ok, but not really what I was expecting.
Review Source:Diner food, like sarkis in the parkish but an even bigger menu.
But all belly gusting food that will make my lifelong dream of being a trophy husband obsolete. Meekly order a Guinness & cower under the cubs game. That's my move. The only thing is, I think the pint glass I was served my tasty 100+ calorie beverage in was not a regulation Guinness pint glass. Maybe I just own 4 Guinness cups
from working in bars it makes me self-aware to be drinking one outside of my home in an unmarked glass. I need that recognition. Also  I saw a fruit fly by the bar. But the chicken & waffles were flame so yeah, cancels that right out.
Service was average.
NO! Golden Nugget, what happened?
Why change the decor and layout when you're not going to change the menu???
I dislike the fact that they took out the booths. The tables have zero order and your elbow is always being bumped by a waitress that's being rushed by some drunkard (since, hey, they have a bar now!)
Blegh.
Good food, but the service was a bit slow. Â Me and a friend were there at about 9 pm on a friday evening and it was not busy at all. Â We sat outside because it was nice, but it still took awhile to get our food (Pot roast and a belgian waffle).
I ordered breakfast and she got dinner. Â Neither of our food was spectacular, but it was good for diner food. Â And you get a good amount of food for what you pay for.
Overall, a decent meal, and the 10 percent off the bill for checking in was nice as well!
New name & new menu design. Somehow, both of those things combined makes The Edge more appealing than Golden Nugget, don't you agree?
Not only has the outdoor seating been greatly improved, the menu seemed somewhat more appealing. You still get a crap ton of food with your order. I would suggest moving to the last couple pages of the menu for some of the cheaper options that still offer about 3 servings worth of grub.
I ordered the Egg Wrap with bacon and a side of fruit. The wrap was huge and I had enough fruit to save for later.
One additional perk is that they have flavored creamers :) It's the little things.
I'll come back again, but I don't think it will be a weekly staple for me.
Hahahahahaha I will forever remember this place for the man sitting behind me that has been living under a rock for years. He had never seen a Dyson hand dryer before!!! I was laughing at so much of what he said.
Went just for drinks - sangria wasn't like woah tasty yum yum... just normal cheap sangria. Good drink specials though.
Flies surrounded the menus...the boyfriend suggested moving the menus off the table so we did... the flies disappeared. Guess it's true what they say about menus being one of the dirtiest objects ever. Yuck...
There are few things in this world that are better than breakfast food at 3am. I mean bacon anyone? Who can think of any better food in this world?
That being said, I'm clearly biased towards any place that serves breakfast foods during non breakfast hours. It's also easy, I think it's probably pretty impossible to screw up most breakfast items (hopefully).
So, after a night of bar hopping, we ventured to this place. I had been here once before and ordered the tuna melt and it was okay (I did, however, like the fruit platter that came with it).
This time I went for the spinach and cheese omelet with a side of hashbrowns and toast. Everything was yummy, and the portions were huge! I barely ate half (the rest was my true breakfast a few hours later).
The only negative was that the place was packed, and the service was slow. They should hire more servers! (And that they stop serving booze at 2am)
I will definitely be back though.
After living in the neighborhood for about 1 year, I finally ate at The Edge formally known as The Golden Nugget. Â I was very pleased with my experience! Â The restaurant was hopping inside and out at 11:30 on Saturday. Â
The breakfast and lunch menu offer a plethora of entree options! Â I opted for whole wheat pancakes with fresh fruit. Â The portions of all the entrees are huge! Â You can definitely get two meals out of them. Â Service was good and so was the coffee. Â Our waitress attentively made sure she freshened our cups quite frequently. Â I really enjoyed going to a wholesome, classic, brunch spot. Â I don't need anything fancy. Â I aso was intrigued by the muffins, cakes, pies, and other sweet in the front cases. Â The Edge also has exceptional deals for breakfast on the weekdays.
If you want hardy portions of classic tasty America food at a reasonable price, The Edge will fit the bill.
Never ever thought I would eat here in my wildest dreams! I just always said I would never eat @ Golden Nugget which is what this place used to be (and still is just with a new name). I was brought here by hungry friends @ 2AM as a lot of damn thang doing got did drinking-wise. We tried Angelina's Burrito Style and Wiener Circle and both were too packed so this was our last resort (in my Papa Roach voice).
I saw that they had a bar inside so I decided to order a drink and the waitress told me the bar closed @ 1AM (FUCK!). I figured I might as well get my eat on so I ordered a chorizo omelet which was surprisingly good (destroyed my stomach the next day).
All my friends seemed happy with their meals the next day (their stomachs were fucked as well the morning after...lol)
Im not ashamed to say that I would actually come back as sometimes you gotta fulfill that late night, drunken food craving. For you daytimers, they have an outdoor patio that you can chill and eat on.
I love the indoor/outdoor setup of this place. Â My parents were in town visiting and saw this place and wanted to try it out. Â The setup seems great and very city-like, but the menu is more like a Baker's Square. Â I love Baker's Square, but you don't expect a place like that in the city. Â
The food was good, portions were great! Â The had a dessert case, just like Baker's Square. Â Our waitress was super nice, but way slow. Â She seemed to be covering all the tables on the inside and outside part of the south side of the restaurant. Â I don't think it was her fault, but hello?! Â Could she get a little help please?
Awesome make over on the space.  Now its time to makeover the staff!  Dirty dishes sat on our table for 15 minutes as the waitress walked past empty  handed 5 times.  No concept of working smart!  beverage refills?  not once!  Then she disappeared and I had to go to the cash register to get a bill.
Food is plentiful and tasty once they get around to bringing! Too bad. Could be.so much better!
Such is the caveat of being with someone who works long hours and third shift. You have to dine together at the ass crack of dawn.
"Did you wanna go to The Edge?"
"That sounds like a club name."
"No, that's the new name for The Golden Nugget."
So off we went. They have a free parking lot in back! They expanded the space, added a bar, patios, and redecorated.
I found the new decor kinda better with the dark wood but when I said that he made a quizzical look indicating he was not wowed.
The place was huge but had two tables of patrons, yet they sat us by the bathrooms.
We ordered:
Coffees (one normal one decaf)
I got the Chicken Fajita Omelet with pancakes
He got a make your own omelet with bacon, onions, and cheddar. And dry wheat toast.
My omelet was huge. And just ok. Messy. Had chicken, peppers, cheese overload, onions. The pancakes were very puffy and I couldn't cut them with my hurt side so he did for me. I only ate like 20% of my meal and I was starving and am a pig.
He had to send back his toast cuz it came wrong. Then made a sandwich with the dry toast and ate a small amount. The portions here are ridiculous. Cut them and the prices. I tried his choice and it was better than mine. But damn, duh.
Our waitress was nice but spotty. They have big wall tv showing infomercials. Um why? Pointless. Show the news or sports or a tv show.
He asked for an itemized reciept and she said it was impossible. As we left she flagged us and said she had one.
I'd go again. Nothing special, but it's a 24 hr diner.
Definitely would not recommend: Â Waitress was incredibly slow (15 minutes before we even saw her, took 10 minutes to bring our drinks, etc- not exaggerations), drinks tasted like it was the bartenders first job, and the food was just average. Â Also, the waitress forgot to ring in one of our orders.
Experience probably could've been better with better service, but that was a dealbreaker for me. Â Too many other good restaurants in chicago, I would steer clear of this one.
Don't be fooled by the facelift it's got
It's still (it's still) Golden Nugget on the block
This place has been updated inside and out - new purple signage and awnings, a sweet patio (even if it's next to a bus stop and countless bums, it's a patio! with shade!!), and an interior that no longer resembles Grandma's 80s-style tacky floral wall-papered bunny pink and pistachio green vomit-colored furniture nursing home. Â They even converted the old business turned shady coffee shop into a fully stocked BAR. Â Even the bathroom got an update! Â You can finally sit in the stall without having to put toilet paper over the gaps to avoid peeping Toms watching you take care of business. Â The place actually looks great! Â The Edge has everything, so you can stay there for-ev-er if you so please.
And although the restaurant changed, the menu items have not. Â Wraps, burgers, omelets, and platters - everything's still there, even with a few upgrades! Â My friend Michelle's first concern was that the Somerset Breakfast would be gone. Â If it were removed, this would have caused a lot of problems, but we all breathed a sigh or relief when we saw it on the menu and did not have to witness a tirade at the table. Â They added some "gourmet" treats up at the front; aside from cakes and pies, they have chocolate covered rice krispy treats, strawberries, cake pops, and everything to cure your sweet tooth. Â Prices are super cheap and, while not gourmet, it will always hit the spot.
The service was pretty slow, but it was pretty busy, so I didn't mind. Â It gave my friends and I time to catch up... and talk about the edgier style of The Edge. Â This place is still true to it's Golden Nugget heyday, just replaced by it's more attractive 21st century model.
Sidenote: Â The bottom of their receipt says "If you're not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!" Â I still can't help but laugh when I think about it.
The name was not the only thing was changed on this north side restaurant. Â The name has been changed from Golden Nugget, the menu, the interior and exterior has changed for the better. Â The place is incredible for the Lincoln Park neighborhood restaurant.
The restaurant is very welcoming and inviting with the colors from the walls to the floor are very soothing. Â Plenty of tables and counter space along the wall. Â You also have the opportunity to go to the bar which is new.
We (four in the group) had arrived after 10:30pm on Saturday night. Â Linda, our server, greeted us very warmly. Â She gave us plenty of time to review all of the menus which also changed. Â All of us ordered something different. Â I had ordered the French Toast with bacon which was excellent. Â My companions also raved about their meals. Â Let repeat.. raved about their meals. The portions were very large. Â No one will leave hungry. Â Linda was very attentive to my group. Â I would recommend her to everyone.
Go and enjoy this great restaurant.
