This surprisingly might be my favorite take-out in the city.
I mean honestly, I didn't expect it. You've had one Chinese restaurant, you've had them all, right? I mean, Fantastic Wok has pretty much the same menu as all the others. They have the same prices. They have the same style of restaurant. But they make up for it with two key things - quantity of food, and taste.
First, you get a lot of food. Not to belabor the point, but its a comfortable two meals - not the 1 and a half you get from other places.
Second, the taste! Surprisingly good. I got a spicy dish, that somehow was both spicy with a sweet aftertaste at the same time. I don't know how they did it, but it was quite awesome.
I feel kind of bad for them though, because this is just a mom and pop operation and they were quite dead. When I walked in, the older son was helping his younger with homework. They are also in a depressing, run down little strip mall across from Kroger. I guess (hope?) they get enough exposure from everyone doing grocery runs, but it would be nice if that side of the road was more developed, and had more traffic. I hope they do well, I don't want them to go away.
I love the Fantastic Wok on Kenard off of Mitchell. It is convenient and good. I especially love the hot and sour soup and buy quantities of it regularly. All of the other food I've had has been delicious, fresh and of generous proportions. The people who own/run? this restaurant are classy and sweet. My order is always ready very fast. I am very happy to have this restaurant/carry out conveniently close to my home in Northside. The Fantastic Wok is always a good dinner option.
Review Source:I have been searching for what I thought was a simple thing - good, cheap General Tso's chicken - in Cincinnati. Â It has turned out to be quite challenging, but I may have finally found it.
Sarah P. recommended the Fantastic Wok in Brentwood Shopping Center, so when I happened to see this Fantastic Wok, just off my frequent drive home when coming south on I-75 and exiting at Mitchell, I thought it might be the place. Â Well, turns out there are 2 (maybe more I guess) Fantastic Woks.
My wife tried it first, a couple weeks back, and the leftover cashew chicken was bland and ok at best. Â Also, they took 20 minutes when they said 10 for my pickup order, and the place is on the sketchy side - probably not where you want to take your mom for a sit down dinner. Â Overall, I think 3 stars is generous.
But I digress... the General Tso's chicken! Â It has a nice flavor to it - a bit spicy and a bit tangy (I couldn't decipher all the ingredients, but there was definitely hot mustard in there and this GTC is more of an orange than the deep red color that you sometimes find). Â Most importantly though, it has that great mix of crunchy and chewy texture that is what I really like about the dish.
The egg roll I had was fine and it costs a dollar extra for fried rice. Â When they tell you it comes with broccoli, they mean with about 5 pieces of broccoli, so ask for more veggies if that's an issue for you.
I don't think there is anything local or organic on this menu.
