A couple of years ago I gave the Haru in midtown a very negative review. Â Right now I'm here to make amends. Not for that location, but the Haru Sake Bar in the Upper East Side. Â My fiance and I love it and we go at least once a month. Â
I will admit one of the biggest draws about the place is it's proximity. Â Its literally 20 paces outside of our building. Â Though once inside the fun begins. Â The atmosphere is a little more jazzed up than more traditional locations. Â It's better for a date night or romantic evening. We prefer to sit at the bar. Â We always order the rock shrimp tempura which is outrageously good every time. Â Haru also offers a variety of appetizers which are always excellent. Â
Since we fill up on appetizers, we don't need to go nuts with sushi which is very the tab really adds up. Â I get a few pieces and we usually share a roll, or two most. Â The sushi is always very fresh. Their Ikura with Quayle is some of the best I've had. Â We are usually in and out in an hour with a tab under 100 bucks including tip. Pretty good for a great date night tradition. Â
The tab can get out of control if you order lots of sushi and lots of drinks. Â "Special cocktails" are around 13-15 dollars which is pretty f'ed. Â I give this place four stars instead of five because i'm not sure I would come here as much if it wasn't so close. Â Additionally, if you don't order carefully the tab can really run up quick.
Haru also sent me a 20 dollar birthday certificate which I will be using on my next date night with my lovely lady.
Haru provided the worst experience I have ever had. I went with 3 friends and we ordered appetizers and drinks. They carded everyone for the drinks and put the order through. Then 10 minutes later they came back and took our licenses to the back for an uncomfortable 15 minutes. They then brought them back out and told us we "looked young" and they "reserved the right to not serve us" despite the fact that we were all over 21. They proceeded to sarcastically tell us to have a nice dinner. We walked out immediately.
