The Hideout is a real winner on Pill Hill if you're not wanting to spend a fortune at Vito's, or lose a pint of blood at one of the real dives. Â Also, Ivan from Baby Ketten does karaoke there on Sundays, and that's the joint for reals. Â Drinks are very good quality -- not craft cocktail level, but fine-tasting and professionally made -- and it's got a ton of great art, atmosphere and attitude. Â The one drawback is that it's pretty tiny inside, and it's getting ever more popular, so it will sometimes get incredibly frenzied, especially if they're short-handed. Â But otherwise, it's a fine place to get lit.
Review Source:It was a dark and moody bar. The weekday business face of First Hill has gone to sleep, and the Hideout is just starting to stretch its legs and get the night started.
The Hideout is where you go when you've done your daylight errands and just need a cool place to hang your silk hat. And need a place to keep your eyeballs busy with eye-catching art. I found myself staring at some for an unnaturally long time, but nobody made me feel weird about it. Look away, voices seemed to say.
Small in size, we sat at the bar, and at the couches toward the front door. Other tables were taken by what looked like lone people, who wanted to be with people, but not WITH people. That's cool. I get that.
The service was fine but the drink prices must be to offset the artists' commissions. But it didn't bother me since I had already made merry at an earlier function and only bought a drink for the sake of holding something cool in my hand.
I wouldn't start off my night here, but I bet I would finish one or two here. Interesting vibe and a cocktail menu that will keep your eyes occupied on something else; if but for a moment.
This place is super funky! Crazy art on the walls, very loungy feel. I like the darker lights, the couches around the place, it's a nice place to go have a few drinks, oh and they serve a cigarette and Polaroid (of you) with basically every drink. Just ask! It's inconspicuous from the outside, but very original on the inside. I am looking forward to coming back! Probably too loud and crowded late on a fri/sat night, but a great place to start or end your night.
Review Source:Just as the name suggests, the Hideout if a great bar to take a break from the Seattle streets. Â I've never had a bad time either with the patrons or the staff. Â The drinks are delicious, and who can complain about the novelty artwork covering the walls? Â Perfect spot for dates, meet ups and just escaping for a good drink in a classy bar. Â
Don't forget to check out the art vending machine!
i don't want to say too much about this place. not because it isn't well deserving of multiple praises - but lets just say... if a picture speaks a thousand words... this place speaks billions.
order an Andy Warhol or The Hemingway. I assure you - no matter where you've gone or what you've done. You've never had a drink order as unique as those. and if you have... I guarantee that you've never seen such a eclectic venue. EVER.
The name fits the description, windows are blacked out, so the place looks closed, but you go in and realize its just an awesome place to hideout;)
hipster place, where the bartenders might have a few tattoos, theres always a few local regulars, catching up with friends. The artwork on the wall is interesting and has this transformative ability. when you go into this place you literally feel like time is slipping away from you ...and I mean that in a good way.
I dont remember what I ordered, what I talked about, but I know I will return
What a cool place. Â Sometimes I wonder if I'm not cool enough to go, but then I stop questioning and have another drink. Â The Hideout is an unassuming little bar on Boren. Â The windows are blacked out, and all that alerts you to its presence is a black sandwich board on the sidewalk. Â Inside, it's very dark, and very noisy if it's busy. Â The walls are covered with art - very interesting art at that. Â There's even an art vending machine!!! Â Everything from handmade jewelry to tiny paintins is inside.
The cocktails are also artistic and delicious. Â They run you about $10 to $11, but they are well-made. Â I've also seen people order cracker/cold cut type of snack plates.
A negative is that they are understaffed at times, and the bartender is nowhere to be seen. Â I was left standing at the bar once for over 15 minutes waiting for someone to take my order. Â One person isn't enough to make food, elaborate drinks, and to cash people out.
It's a nice chill place that never seems to be too busy. My friend was dying to come here and order the Andy Warhol? It's pretty much a cigarette + a polaroid picture of yourself + some cocktail.
There's paintings all around the wall from local artists. You'll soon discover the one that EVERYONE points out.
Spoiler Alert:
masturbating man with two heads and psychedelic background
This place... This is where Yuppie Hipsters go to live out their Friday/Saturday nights. Â The drinks were a bit over priced, the only seating is one long bench that spans the whole wall with a few chairs in front of it. Â It's so loud you can't even hear if some one is yelling. Â
I sweated my butt off in here. Â It was probably well into 90+ degrees... on a cold, October night. Â
The art is decent. Â
I wan't impressed.
I love the mystery in this place. We came here last night after a board meeting at the Puget Sound Blood Center for some team bonding. The bar is really dark, so it takes a few minutes for your eyes to adjust to the room. It's a small bar, so there's not much navigating needed, but there is definitely a lot of great, innovative art to oogle at. I know that's what I did for a few minutes.
A few paintings really stood out to me... especially this one of a beach but it was shaped within a heart. It was really cool. I just really loved the variety of moods, feelings, and sentiments that were conveyed on the wall of art at the bar.
I just ordered a vodka cranberry which tasted normal. There are a few couches for people to lounge around on which was nice. The bartender was quick and efficient. The bathroom is clean, huge and nice!
This is the perfect spot to bring a friend if you want to catch up for a one-on-one or something like that.
Long time patron of this venue but service has gone completely downhill in recent weeks.
To start off, your cocktails will no longer contain fresh squeezed juice. Everything is pre-squeezed now. Better than store bought garbage I suppose but disappointing nonetheless given they pride themselves on their cocktails. If they cut corners here, they're cutting corners elsewhere.
Secondly, the two guys they have working here Saturdays are completely devoid of personality. I realize they may hate their job but it is a service industry and it doesn't hurt to be at least a little personable and show some hospitality. There's a reason Murray Stenson receives so many accolades, and no, it has little to do with his memory or his skills as a bartender.
Lastly, at around 8 pm, with nearly a full cocktail left, I left my seat  at the bar to use the restroom. I was gone less than 5 minutes. When I got back, my chair, and the chairs to the right and left of me were gone. I jokingly asked the bartender where my seat went and he looked straight at me and then walked away without saying a word.
It was immediately clear to me what they did. They simply wanted to clear out some extra standing space in front of the bar in anticipation of the Saturday night crowd. That said, it doesn't hurt to ask if I could move down a spot (the place was nearly empty) rather than grabbing my chair the second I walked away.
Bad service is bad business.
The Hideout was the first truly great bar I visited when I moved to Seattle last year. I went with an old classic for my first drink at that time and found out that Kristen makes the best Corpse Reviver No. 2 I have ever tasted.
I brought a small party of friends to the bar last night to celebrate my 1 year anniversary in Seattle and bartenders Kristen and Sara took care of us all night, providing absolutely top shelf drinks, great service and a friendly attitude. It was a very special gathering for my closest friends in the city and it went off perfectly thanks to the staff at the Hideout.
The bar has stellar atmosphere, a dark low-key vibe and great artwork. I prefer to be there when it's slower as the last thing I want to be around is a room full of hipsters, but this bar is quality all the way through.
Great spot. I come here often and I always take newbies into this place. Here are the strong points to the Hideout:
RECLUSIVE: Yeah, great name for this spot. No attention called to the place other than a street sign. When you walk in it is like stepping into a cave, almost like a cocktail lounge version of Narnia. When you're inside, you blind from the outside world with an occasional blink when someone walks in or out of the place.
ART/DECOR: The art is the strongest feature here. Several paintings dominate the high walls (est. 25 feet high) and will keep your mind busy. 3 chandeliers provide excellent mood lighting and they're all different from each other. The cooler behind the bar is amazing. It looks like a 50s commercial refrigerator (with windows); they told me it came with the place when they bought it.
STELLAR SERVICE: The staff have always been so nice and friendly. I always tip fat here.
COCKTAILS/BEER SELECTION: To be honest, it's not the best. They do have a full bar. They don't have everything, but the selection is well-decided so there are alternates. For example, I won't find Chopin's potato vodka, but this place turned me on to an even better Monopolowa. This place will definitely work if you're not too picky or finicky. Believe me, the ambience makes up for it.
FOOD: A light menu and I've only eaten here once. I had the antipasto platter and it was definitely a generous portion. Mid-grade, but well worth the price.
PARKING: Street parking. But not once have I failed to find parking within a block of the place. The Hideout is a 1/2 block away from Madison so it's easy to navigate to and from the I-5.
ART VENDING MACHINE: Okay, so I don't buy anything from it. And maybe it is a tad gimmicky, but oddities like this are what makes Seattle a top notch drinking city.
If you had the perfect hangout...What kind of bar would it be?
Make it with dark with dimmed lighting with comfortable seating. Bingo.
And the drinks would have to be top-notch, fresh squeeze juice. Ding.
Make it with a little glamour, style & culture. Bingo.
Yeah, make it look sexy but old. Ding.
Make it a place where you can talk with your friends with good music in the background but not too loud to overpower your conversation. Bingo
Make it a place where the bartender knows your name and you are not embarrassed to go there by yourself. Ding.
A place you are proud to take your out of town guest and be greeted by a sharp friendly doorman. Bingo.
This place has over 70 paintings on 16-foot walls. I am a huge fan of them showcasing contemporary local artists from the great Pacific Northwest. Most the paintings are for sale. Rotating weekly.
So many original tasty cocktails but my Fave is the LA Paloma - Tequila blanco, lime, St-germain, sage, nectar, scrappy's grape fruit bitters. It taste like organsm in your mouth.
If you are looking for a sexy hangout for the night....do come find the HideOut!
Highly Recommended.
Pro Tip: Drink specials and draft beer change with the seasons, but their happy hour remains the same from 4:00-7:00 pm Monday through Friday, they offer $1.50 Rainiers, $3.00 well drinks and $3.50 drafts. Don't stare too long at the paintings with breasteses!
Well, hello there.
May I pull up a bar stool and sit down next to you?
Do you come here often?
Do you want to go steady?
It was that fast for me, I fell pretty much in love within the first few minutes of a sip of that drink, a glance around the room at the gorgeous art, the nice seating, the intimate groups clustered around the tables, the hot and talented bartendress and just the general vibe that emanates from the little darklit pocket of goodness.
Oh, I left before you could answer, but I'll be back, your siren call is too hard to resist.
Oooo, sexy sexy!
I love the local art lining the walls. Love it to tiny bits.
I love the clean schmancy bathroom.
I love the pretty lady bartender making me yummy  strong drinks named after monkeys.
I love the dark moody lighting.
I love laughing with my friends here.
I love the bouncer who made sure I was ok when I went outside to catch some fresh air.
I liked the music choices playing the background, and that even with crowd noise they didn't pump it up to ear-deafening volumes.
I don't love how cramped it can get, and how ~hot ~the place can be with said mobs of people in there. But beyond that, I'm totally enamored.
(Take me here for a sexy date! Yes, please. Do it.)
I swear somebody stole The Hideout from Capitol Hill and tucked it away in a super secret spot where only those worthy of entering such a cool bar would be able to find it and then once inside would marvel at the dark and cozy atmosphere with the super fun artwork hanging from the walls. To top it off, you can even buy any of the pieces on display and they also have a vending machine that features even more artistic treasures...how cool is that!
The bar staff here is one of the best I've seen from the friendly door man to the super cool and very talented bar tenders that handled any and all orders tossed their way and managed to put together some amazingly tasty drinks that had us coming back for more and more. For what seemed like a small space when you walk in, there are actually a lot of places to sit and there is just a real comfortable vibe so you don't feel cramped or crowded even when there's a lot of people...or maybe I was just really drunk!
If I lived on First Hill, I would be spending probably way too much time here so it may be a good thing there is just enough distance to keep The Hideout on the fringes of my regular watering holes. Either way, this is now on my short list of hot spots to recommend to anyone looking for places to go in Seattle.
Should I be worried that I now live so close to this sophisticatedly lovely, cozily-classy drinking establishment? I was never that close or addicted to the Hideout, and it was always a positive sweet experience whenever I would visit. More often than not I would leave intoxicated enough that I never remembered the actual location of the bar. I would always have to look up address/directions to find my way back here.
But now I find it a struggle every night to not make the short, uphill walk and get me a well-crafted cocktail or just a taste of straight-up liquor from their well-stocked bar. I have yet to be disappointed by your cocktail creation. I had one of the best Scotch (Laphroaig) Old Fashioned here. It's one of those classic drinks that's hard to mess up, but also hard to make especially good. But you (bartender whose name I can't remember) made it with love. At least I hope that's what it was.
Comfortable booths, cool tabletops, art pieces on the wall, and always great music on the playlist. I remember the first time I heard some deep cut from the Knife (literally--not their album 'Deep Cuts'), I knew we would be good friends.
I don't want this to be an exclusive thing, I still wanna go check out other bars. And I don't want this just to be a thing of convenience, just because I live so close. But why do you have to be so great, and your bartenders so skilled AND nice?
Just know that whenever I decide not to stop in, it's because I don't want you to get bored of me.
That or I'm a few blocks over at your cousin Vito's.
This is a cool bar, man. It has a beatnik arty vibe that you can't help but admire. I felt I needed a black beret and some bongo drums. There is beautiful, scary, thoughtful, and straight up wacky art on the walls. The furniture is art deco and whimsical and the pictures in the back make you wish you knew a rockstar. How can I fail to mention the art vending machine?
The Hideout is unrecognizable from the outside. The windows are blackout with a red light that says "Cocktails". You can already get the sense you will be awfully surprised once you step through its doors. The space is dark and mysterious and leaves you wishing you had a room like this in your home. This would be the perfect place for a date.
The bartenders were dressed so snazzy and made an excellent drink. Even though I had a standard and somewhat unexciting rum and Coke it was seriously the best rum and Coke I've ever imbibed. Maybe it was because they used exceptional rum instead of the cheap well rum I am used to or maybe it was just made with love but whatever transpired it was fantastic.
I have fallen deeply in love with The Hideout with its hip interior, great drinks, and unforgettable art.
I won't reveal my secret bat lair location but I live very close to Hideout. Dangerously close. Hideout on a quiet Thursday night is hypmotizing. The walls d'art get better and better with every beverage. I found myself really relating to Nude Lady With A Lion Head #57.
Our bartender was in a Great Gatsby suspendery get-up and was moody and polite. Me and Friend tried a few different cocktails off the menu which were unusual and tasty. Maybe this place gets full on the weekends, I don't know, I think I'll stick to my Thursday night wallowings.
Out of all the different bars that i could have had my birthday celebration, i chose the hideout for a few reasons. Â
1. Â i love the art on the walls
2. Â you wouldn't know it's there unless you know it's there
3. Â their juices are all fresh pressed
4. Â if there was ever a bar to describe me, it would be the hideout. Â
i love the warmth of this bar. Â not only did they let our party choose the music, they also made a drink special for mis amigos. Â (a beccatini!)
so if you're thinking about having a function, i suggest the hideout. they're accomodating and wonderful! (just like me.)
I've been walking past this little spot for weeks now hoping to make it inside...and finally crossed the threshold last night. And since it's so nearby I imagine that moment may happen again and again!
Although I'm a beer and wine drinker, I enjoyed perusing the inventive and lengthy drink menu, as well as the small but creative selection of draft beer (which changes from time to time). There was the ubiquitous Manny's, but they also had an IPA from a smaller local brewery (Diamond Knot), as well as a Blonde and something else I can't recall.
The food offerings are brief but look thoughtful (cheese and snack plates), and the art, if not always stellar, is interesting. And since the walls are literally covered in it, you can always spend a lull in the conversation by gazing around and picking out your favorite painting of the moment. Even though there's an artsy vibe, I'm no hipster and felt entirely comfortable there, and I'd say most of the other folks inside didn't exactly fit the hipster image either. So don't be scared away if you weigh more than 100 pounds and like colors; you'll be just as welcome!
Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy.
Hey, guess what? The Hideout is kinda artsy. Did you hear me? Have you been paying attention to the 10 reviews prior to mine? In case, you're too busy caring about something more important, let me remind you:
Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy. Artsy.
Okay, good. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I like this place. It's not like me to enjoy hipster havens, and it's more likely that you can find me hiding out in Ballard rather than in my actual way-too-hip neighborhood. But when I do keep it local, I like to come to The Hideout.
There are tons of bars in First Hill/Cap Hill, and all are replete with way-too-skinny chicks (I am raising my hand!) and dudes with awkward facial hair and flannels they may have gotten from my father circa 1989. I mean, tons. But The Hideout holds a special place in my no-heart because these annoying cretins don't talk to me. They're far too engrossed in their own ARTSY lives to notice me, and I like it that way. My friends and I can lean back and enjoy the ride.
I've yet to try this Cucumber Gimlet, as it sounds almost too ARTSY for me. But they make a mean vodka + soda. And they don't serve it with a smile, which is a good thing at such an ARTSY place.
Artsy and moody without being too emo or hipster... SCORE!
Thanks to Eugene C. (and Julie B. for reminding me) I already knew the plan was to order a Cucumber Gimlet. While the bartender was friendly and made a good drink, ordering wasn't always the easiest process and more often than not it took an extended amount of time to get the bartender's attention. The Cucumber Gimlet was very light and refreshing. Perfect amount of cucumber and perfect amount of gin. The round of shots that we ordered were interesting. All night long it seemed like whatever I ordered couldn't be made by the bartender. There was always some ingredient he was missing. Nonetheless he made something relatively comparable that was always decent although rarely great.
The art on the walls was... interesting. Some of it was ridiculous, some of it I liked, some of it was cooky.... all of it was interesting though.
I'll definitely come back to The Hideout. Parking was a breeze, they poured some good drinks (and some mediocre ones) and the artwork provided some... interesting conversation....
Artsiest bar ever. I visited last night -- it's not at all hard to find.
Very high ceilings, and walls packed with artwork (including some of dubious taste), and a vending machine selling pieces of art. Or was the vending machine the art? Who knows. All I know is that it inspired conversations about Marxism and at least one broken glass.
The down-low: a friendly bartender and a strong G&T -- I'm happy.
PS. Seattle, what's with all the bad facial hair?
Best date locale ever. Â Just make sure you explain to your date exactly how to get here, or you'll feel guilty for making her walk around First Hill for 15 minutes wondering if she just got Punk'd. Â It's on the west side of the street, just north of Madison on Boren. Â Look for the "open" and "cocktails" signs in red neon.
The humble exterior belies the super-sexy, intimate and artistic interior. Â Nearly every inch of its high walls are covered with cool works of art from local artists. Â The music that night took us on a wild journey from the Velvet Underground, to Dolly Parton to Justin Timberlake. Â The bar is expansive and their bartenders make fantastic drinks with a fine attention to detail. Â They've a modest selection of quality beers on tap and some excellent Belgians by the bottle.
Their cocktail menu has some very interesting creations. Â I tried their rhubarb manhattan, which I thought was good, but a little too bitter for my taste. Â Fellow Yelper Eugene C. recommended their cucumber gimlet--which I didn't see on the menu but ordered anyway. Â I requested it with Hendricks gin and it was divine--a perfect balance of lime, cucumber and gin (although sadly the unique flavor of Hendricks was overpowered by the other flavors). Â My hot date enjoyed her vodka & sodas and we shared their tasty hummus plate. Â It was nothing too fancy but was filling. Â It came with a variety of crackers, artichoke dip, hummus, tapenade and a medley of peppers. Â I'd have liked some toasted pita and feta, but you don't come to the Hideout to eat--you come here to drink.
I can't wait to bring my friends back here!
I've heard from quite a few people that the Hideout is a great spot in Seattle for some late night cocktails. I made my way over there last night and was excited about the looks of the place just based on the lack of signage. Makes you feel like you're headed to a secret spot!
Once inside it's a dark, tall space covered with some really amazing art work. I almost regretted going with friends because I was so interested in looking up at the 20 ft walls of art and not so much in making eye contact with my own friends! (at least for the first few mins or so..)
My drink was strong and the service was great. I wasn't there too long because it was late at night but am definitely planning to go back soon.
Well hello there Mr Hideout...
aren't you a sexy sexy creative artsy fartsy bitch?!
My friend somehow got misplaced for the evening, but all is well, I actually always wanted to come here and now I have! This place is fucking AWESOME! They have art from local artists hanging on the walls and they'll give a pad of paper and pen to draw your own stuff. So I drew my own little artist's contribution to their schwag...
Chuck is an awesome bartender who kept my drink full and and made sure I was ok alone and even shared his snack of a cheese plate with me.
Free cheese? SCORE!!
I will be back in a heartbeat...its warm, cozy and dark; perfect
If bars were boyfriends, mine would be The Hideout.
It meets all my criteria, which would be:
Sexy and mysterious with an artistic edge.
Loves good music and has great style.
Not pretentious and makes a mean drink.
Now, if they just served breakfast in the morning, I'd totally be in love.
Good stuff, as duly noted in the other 42 rave reviews (including Ass Man Z's 1 star).
Free pretzels + great art on the wall and in the vending machine.
I'll have to try the cocktail list next time but I got a (read: several) exotic drink called "bier". That's German for "beer".
Oh, and when you first walk in, get prepared for retina-stunning darkness.
a hidden gem that i was happy to be introduced to yesterday : )
HH prices are pretty decent
comfy surroundings... a great place to have a more intimate gathering with friends
great artwork on the walls that are for sale to the public
friendly service with a smile as an added bonus!
free pretzels to munch on while guzzling (i mean sipping) your drink... YES!!!
can't wait to go back : )
Uber cool bar which is within four blocks of new home so that means I got a new haunt!! The bar itself is super swanky but in the good way and their drink selection is awesome. Plus they got some killer art work on the walls that will keep you attention all night long. And don't forget about the free jukebox which was playing nothing but the blues all night and totally set the mode.
I had a few of the their Bourbon Crusta's and a few Old Cuban's but I preferred the Bourbon Crusta hands down. They even have three different appetizer plates which all sounded good. I thoroughly enjoyed by Spreads Platter because it came with some delicious hummus and artichoke dip. So we ended the night with a $116 tap for 2 and half people but believe it or not I had the time of my life there!! So if your looking for a super cool bar with an awesome vibe this place is totally for you.
Bourbon Crusta Ingredients:
Bourbon, Triple Sec, Maraschino Liqueur, Squeezed Lemon Juice, and Orange Bitters=Heaven!!!
While I wouldn't quite go to the 5 star level, this is still a pretty cool bar. Â Think Sitting Room or Viceroy style (two of my favorites) with a more down to earth and ecletic feel. Â
Reading the drink menu is quite entertaining. Â I opted for "The Hemingway", which is a beer, shot of tequila and cigar. Â Cool, although I was disappointed it didn't come with a shotgun.
