My favorite gastro pub on the Upper East Side. Any place that can serve up authentic fish & chips, wins my heart. It doesn't hurt, also, that their sticky toffee pudding is quite bluntly put, orgasmic. Place can get ridiculously crowded over the weekends, but definitely worth the wait.
Review Source:First off I have wanted to stop in and see if the majority of the Yelp reviews, which are positive, would hold up for me. The bar area is well done and comfortable. From this point in the review my scoring begins to slide a bit. The staff were pleasant at first seating but seem to spend a majority of time interacting or was entertaining each other. A bit of more attention to the guests, at least this guest, would have been appreciated. Service is the low point of the review for me. The beer selection is broad and a highlight. The bar menu and food from the bar menu that I tried this evening was good/very good. The wine selection that others wrote about here is reasonable in my view but you can do much better in total selections and price points along 2nd Ave. All told a solid 3 star review for a local neighborhood bar.
Review Source:Best fish and chips in NYC. Â Hands down. Â That said, there isn't much competition out there - and for the price, you get a relatively small portion.
The atmosphere is really nice. Â We were seated in the patio outside, which was way nicer than the dark main room. Â The server was really nice and the sides (mushy peas, bubble n squeak) were fantastic. Â But get the fish and chips!
Food: Ate a wide range of the 'toasts' offered at the bar, which had a nice range of savory and new mixes (several fish and vegetarian options too). Perfect with drinks. Fruit and cheese and crumpets were also winners -- well made, with the right mix of toppings and toasted bread.
Service/Atmosphere: Attention from the bartender was friendly and casual. Crowd was light (around 4p) and it was easy to sit and relax the afternoon away.
Definitely going back - and making up reasons to eat toasts in the afternoon again.
This place is really good!... if the only place you've ever been in your life is Stumble Inn and you're desperately seeking a smaller douchebag population. However, once you walk in and realize, "Hey, this place isn't thaaaat douchey," you slowly start to realize the douches are, in fact, there, only more hidden.
Strike 1: No booze. They're not even apologetic about it in a "so sorry we don't have our liquor license yet" way. They're super pretentious about it. Like, "Our owner doesn't WANT us to serve booze. On purpose!!!" Gross. Maybe he should and this place would be bearable.
Strike 2: The fish and chips are super average. This is supposedly their signature dish, so you would think it might be something to write home about. It's not. It's boring, bland and forgettable (so forgettable I can't even think of another adjective to describe it).
Strike 3: The staff is worse than toe jam. They might think it's charming to hire only people with accents, but not if those people say "NO WORRIES!!!" instead of "No problem" or "That's okay." And not to be too specific, but the hostess with the blonde ponytail who was working Sunday night September 29 sucked worse than their gross Beef Wellington.
Strike 4: The food stinks.
Touted as a British pub/gastropub, I knew we had to try this place. Having never dined here, I made a reservation just in case - a British fellow answered. Â I had good feelings about this place.
Upon walking in, it looks like your average, narrow NYC bar with stools filled with patrons and just enough space to squeeze through the alley of wall and backs. Â But never fear, once you make it to the other side a hostess will greet you and take you to the spacious dining area. Â Similar to a train car, we crossed a small dining room which housed a large communal table, Â beside that was a glass door leading to an garden dining area. Â Beyond that was the main dining room - cozy, candle-lit but not stuffy, great place for a date but also good for a gather with friends.
There is certainly something for everyone - appetites big and small. Â Their Toast menu is great for unusual bar fare or if you just want something to snack on with drinks (also perfectly acceptable appetizers). Â We ordered Pear and Blue Cheese and Smoked Mackerel Pate (because, why not?). Â The Pear and cheese were served on crostinis and had a milder flavor than your typical blue cheese - creamy and light; not quite as pungent and the pear was sweet and complemented perfectly with the savory cheese. Â The mackerel pate was served almost like a scoop of gelato and resembled almost a soybean paste flavor. Â Briny, but not overwhelmingly fishy and served as a great spread on triangle toast. Â Quite filling though as pate can be a pretty heavy pre-main course selection.
Speaking of which - we each ordered a main: Â I had the Scottish trout, the bf ordered classic Bangers & Mash and my friend had the hanger steak. Â I can only assume the other two dishes were delicious since our conversation ceased. Â My trout sat on a bed of creamy risotto with corn and cheese --- perfectly creamy, warm, savory and hearty. Â The fish was flaky and almost salmon-like in color but had a firmer texture. Â I washed this all down first with their 'First Bloom' cocktail, a white wine with elderflower flavor and lemon juice during appetizers, and a unique Banana beer during my main. Â Certainly one of the most unique beers I've tasted - not really a banana flavor on your tongue so much as a banana essence with each sip.
Service was friendly and swift. Â Definitely coming back for drinks, dinner, out-of-towners. Â It's virtually an multi-occasion type of place.
Drinks only review ... Met a group of friends here to catch up. We were able to snag a table in the back and order drinks from the waitress. We had excellent service. We all had beer which was a great selection of locals and microbreweries . wait staff knowledgeable about the beer selection. Interesting sounding cocktails as well but didn't try them. Â Great vibe inside. Bathrooms have recipes all over the walls and are clean. Good crowd. Would definitely be back for drinks. Â Food menu looks good but a bit expensive
Review Source:Nice beer selection, exceptionally tasty but some pricey food items.
The Fish portion of the Fish & Chips ($19) was disappointingly small.
The Pot Pie ($16) was also quite tidy, not a great value there.
A final razzing by way of a cash-only requirement on our $120 bill. Said their POS system was down - bummer.
Typical NYC. There are better spots.
If a New Yorker suggests a restaurant, expect it to be within 3 blocks of their apartment. It may not be great, but hey at least it's convenient for their ass!
Amazing! I love this place! Amazing selection of beers and hard ciders. The food is really amazing as well I would suggest the shepherds pie!
The building is really cool as well. It feels as if you are in a Ralph Lauren magazine or a jack wills advertisement. It is famously British!!!!
JWF changed my opinion of British food. Â Everything I tried was delicious - octopus salad, lamb pie with mash, and brussel sprouts with tomato. Â The pie was my favorite. Â Surprisingly the crust, not the lamb, was the highlight of the dish. Â It was light and crispy and paired nicely with the mash and gravy. Â It's a small and cozy venue so be prepared to stand around. Â As promised, the bartender was cute and friendly. Â This was worth venturing a trip to the UES. Â I definitely want to come back for the coffee flavored porter.
Review Source:This is our second trip to Jones Wood Foundry and we have finally found a great place for fish and chips. The staff is always efficient, and the atmosphere is friendly.
On our first visit I had the fig salad salad special and it was so tasty, they were wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with blue cheese- a real winner. This time my husband had the chicken & mushroom pie special with mashed potatoes and he loved it.
I had a champagne cocktail, the St. Germand, and it was lovely and light.
This is our new go-to neighborhood restaurant, so glad we found it!
For drinks in the bar with the bar food toasts this place is outstanding.
For dinner in the tavern backroom, I have definitely experienced better. Â The menu was a bit difficult to order off of as the selection was all over the place. Â The hostess wore extremely high stiletto shoes that were very annoying throught the meal as she stomped across the dining room to seat people. Â
Jones Wood Foundry, has an excellent selection of wines both by the glass and bottle, the little toasts they sell are delicious but the main meals left much to be desired.
I used to love this place. I have been here many times for brunch and dinner. Until now.
First there was no hostess to seat us. We were left languishing at the front for so long I actually wondered if they stopped serving dinner on Sundays. Then there was a mouse under our table. Yep. Mouse running in the dining room. The waitress herself spotted it before we did. But worse than the mouse itself was the response from our waitress. As in, there was none. To be polite my friend and I very quietly asked to move to another table and purposefully didn't talk about it. So maybe she thought we love mice scampering over our feet while we eat, but there was no apology, no asking if we were OK. In fact, when she came over to take our order she said "Now that I've gotten over the trauma of seeing that..." She didn't seem to notice that as customers it might be unpleasant for us too. The worst was that when we lingered after the meal, she kept trying to get us out. Half the restaurant was empty, what's the difference if we leave the moment we're done eating? I have never had any service issues here, and I normally wouldn't complain based on one failed night, but this was a particularly spectacular failure. I should say that this is a waitress I have never seen there before.
The food was as good as usual. Good burgers, good beers.
This review is a bit bipolar. This place is great for drinks and dinner. It feels like a cozy tavern when dimly lit. My favorites are the pâté, cottage pie, and bread pudding. All their soups are great. The cocktails are lovely. The dinner service is attentive and friendly.
Now, brunch.... I think I can sum it up with one experience. A friend and I had a hard time ordering as nothing seemed particularly appealing. When the waitress was asked for her favorite thing on the menu, she replied with the scotch wood cock eggs, but she would get it with poached eggs instead of scrambled and hollandaise instead of anchovy butter.
4 stars but rated solely on drinks and dessert. If I had eaten real food and/or stayed longer there's no doubt Jones Wood Foundry would get 5 stars. Of course, I spotted this place on the Food Network, and since I was living in the area I thought, why not, lets do it. I decided to right for the good stuff: the sweets! But first, the bar is super cute and "old fashioned," personable bartenders and a friendly crowd -- just the place where you could see yourself hanging for a few welcomed drinks. Ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Treacle Sauce -- who cares if its only 1pm on a Saturday? And what is treacle sauce you ask? No clue but it doesn't matter -- Â no rules on Saturday. Anyways, the dish was absolutely delectable. Warm, gooey, rich...Almost too much for one person to have by themselves, but boy did I try. I'm not sure which drink I had but I believe it was a First Bloom. A bit sweet, but tasted great and it was definitely unique. Would love to come by again!
Review Source:LOVED the ambiance here. Had a glass of Carmenere which was delicious (not a big beer fan). Our server, the cute blonde (?) was such a sweetheart and really made the experience by making recommendations and being overall so friendly.
We had the calamari special with white bean hummus - a delight. Chicken Tikki Masala and Pork Chop equally lovely. And the chocolate with sea salt dessert. Great ambiance, Manager stopped by to check in on everything and joke around. Wish we would have stayed to grab another drink at the bar!
I really did like this place, but it is very overpriced. Â I had the cod and chips; which were OK. Â I do not know why everyone raves that 'they are the best'. Â They were good, but a small portion and over priced. Â My son had the lamb pie and mash, which he enjoyed. Â The special appetizer was excellent--steamed asparagus--again, excellent; I ordered it again for desert. Â But when I got the bill I realized that it was $10 for four stems of asparagus. Â Lastly, although it has a nice vibe--I felt it was overrun with tourists from the UK and Australia. Â So it had more of the feel of a Times Square pub than a neighborhood UES pub. Â In summary, Â nice place with good food, but over priced, small portions, and TOURISTS. Â Oh, major win for this place is the beer selection, forgot that point.
Review Source:I love the cocktails here. I think they're clever and tasty and surprising. I've never been disappointed by their drinks. Their food is another story. I had really high hopes because the menu looked great, but it was a major fail. Both mine and my friend's meals were unappetizing, her salmon burger wasn't even fully cooked, but at that point we had waited so long for our food we didn't feel like mentioning it. My dish was cooked properly but it was uninspiring and not even that tasty. I didn't finish it. My boyfriend and my friend's boyfriend both enjoyed their meals, but nobody was wowed by it. My two cents? Go for drinks, and maybe a nibble, but look elsewhere for a real meal. Bonus: they have adorable decor, and one of the bathrooms is covered in old recipes!
Review Source:Ok maybe a 3 1/2 stars but I did like it for more than just the food so I rounded up instead of down. It was busy, there wasn't anywhere to sit at the bar so my friend and I decided we would take a table in the back (can only sit here if you are eating). We looked at the menu and ordered the same thing. We got the roasted chicken and it came with mashed potatoes. It was actually pretty good. Neither of us could finish because the portion was kind of large, but not overwhelming.
If you want to come here on the weekend for just a drink like I did, come early so you will find a place at the bar. If you're coming for dinner, the menu isn't extensive but you will find something to order. Atmosphere is "cute" and welcoming.
I used to love this place, but I've been back 3 times recently and something is missing with the food....
Last week I went for dinner and the AC appeared to be weak/not working properly during one of the hottest days of summer... I was sweating throughout my dinner (not pleasant!) But this wasn't their fault so can't blame them for this one!
Usually quite happy with their food, but this time (and last time), something was a miss. Had the mackeral salad (day's special) to start which was o-k. But for $12, I would expect more on the plate. More salad at least?? (which was just bits of greens, nothing fancy) My husband ordered the fish and chips, the fish was so SMALL, I couldn't believe what had happened to it? Neither could he! For the size of the fish, I think the price should have been $18 not $22 or so which they charge. I know it's the UES but still doesn't justify the prices for the quantity of food that is given. I had the cottage pie - potato topping was great, gravy was nice but the bits of steak itself, lacked a bit of flavor.
The only other request I would have for this place is to PLEASE HAVE NORMAL KETCHUP available. I am sure lots of people love the homemade tomato sauce... but why on earth can you not offer normal ketchup as an alternative? The home made tomato sauce reminds me of pasta sauce/tomato puree. I want the artificial stuff!!! Just could not enjoy the fries without my ketchup.....
All in all, still a decent place to grab dinner and a drink, but not as keen on this place as I used to be.
3.7501 stars
I'm a long time Bostonian who loves LES so I don't find myself above the park that much. In early June with steamy and wet weather I did spend a few days in Yorkville.
It was a torrential rain and after 9pm when I arrived, I took off the cheap Duane Reade rain poncho and grabbed a corner seat at the bar. Apart from being dry and in the AC, I did get a good vibe from this neighborhood Gastro-Pub almost instantly. I started with a leak and potato soup, quite sublime, in it's creamy simplicity. That was followed by a deconstructed slightly up scaled banger-n-mash that was just right portion-wise. They have decent although not extensive selections of wine by the glass which is good in my opinion. Cask Ales are featured under the JWF moniker as well as some of my favorite American craft beers. Both England and Belgium well are represented in bottle and tap. I Â was pleased to see Murphy's was available on tap. I didn't see much of the place beyond the bar but it was intimate seating, and just dark enough that you don't need you mobile phone to see.
* Parking? Good luck I took a cab.
* Seasonal turnover on the menu.
* It's a mini chain but it certainly did not have that feel.
I don't even like fish, but the Cod and Chips was out-of-this-world fantastic. Â The batter on the cod stayed crunchy to the very last bite. Â Just outstanding, and even at $22, worth every cent. Â For dessert I thoroughly enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding: this dense date super moist "pudding" drenched in treacle, with candied almonds? On the side and ice cream too. Â One of the best meals I've had in NYC to date, easily.
Review Source:My friend was having some serious Jonesing for fish fry, a quick online check took us to JWF for our first visit. The previous Yelp reviews did not let us down. Cod and Haddock to choose from in the fish & chips selection. The entree was fried to perfection and did not disappoint.
I opted for the evening special of steak & oyster pie. Man size chunks of sirloin, savory oyster flavor inside a yummy buttery crust. I wasn't disappointed either.
Good food, excellent English beers to choose from and British accents everywhere. It's either to forget you're on the UES and get transported across the Great Pond.
Very cool atmosphere. Definitely feels like you're in an old (albeit, upscale) British public house. And by house, I mean a large and winding one. I very much liked the atmosphere and layout. The food and prices, however, were not to my liking. To begin with, they were out of their most desirable dishes. And they informed us AFTER we had already ordered them. I somewhat understand running out of food (not really, since its a restaurant, but the idea makes sense). But if you've run out of food, you have to inform customers up front. You can't wait until they've already ordered and the menus have been taken a way. Definitely a misstep. So, I ended up getting the bangers and mash. While tasty, bangers and mash the price seemed steep at close to $20. They're small sausages and mashed potatoes. Come on people! And of course, this is what I had to order since they were out of the other two dishes we had originally ordered.
I'll possibly be back for a beer and will consider going for dinner again. I did like the atmosphere. But given the price, I wasn't thrilled with the service and the experience as a whole.
A poor man's Spotted Pig. If you're stuck on the UES and desperate for a gastropub, this is the only game in town. Lots of cougars looking for prey. Â Fish and chips are tolerable. Best off are the apps, such as the chicken liver crostino. Nice atmosphere - make sure that you're in the back yard, such as it is - which bumps it up a notch. But really: go downtown.
Review Source:I absolutely adore this place. Â Real British Pub food and beer on the Upper East Side. Where else can you can get "Beef and Horseradish Rissoles", "Scotch Egg", "Toad in the Hole", "Bangers and Mash" and just about the best "Fish and Chips" you are ever going to have. Â Everything I've had here has been delicious.
I can't say enough kind things about Jones Wood Foundry. Â I love any place where they say "cheers" when you get your warm beer. Â The staff is extremely nice and accommodating. Â
I definitely look forward to my next time here.
Good first impressions are made when one finds a pub with two screens playing football programmes. Â A sole bartender was quick to extend a rather friendly and genuine welcome. Â Bangers and Mash was the night's calling, paired with some Fuller's London Pride on draft at the bartender's recommendation. Â The dish of the night came out nicely presented as three generously sized links each resting upon an oval-shaped bouquet of mash. Â The sausages themselves though could have done with a little more heat - the insides were a bit softer than I would prefer, and the casing was far short of an attractive snap. Â
Cozy vibe, with a dim warm lighting in both the front bar area and the rear dining areas. Â As a plus, there is a painting of dogs enjoying themselves playing some billiards.
The cod and chips plate was good but didn't live up to the hype of the best fish and chips in Manhattan.
I also tried a bite of their burger with Stilton cheese and thought it was average.
Appetizer special - figs and Stilton wrapped on prosciutto lacked a bit of flavor for me, too.
Good beer list!
The bar area is a little tight but the back room where we had dinner and the outdoor patio are both BEAUTIFUL. I will probably come here again and try other dishes.
Enjoy!
Yes, yes, yes - I know we Brits are not exactly renowned for the culinary gifts bestowed upon the world, but I challenge you to find a better plate (actually wooden chopping board) of fish and chips, a better Yorkshire pudding anywhere (a savory dish despite its name, from my home county which ranks alongside Yorkshire terriers, and be-humped King Richard of the few famous things from Yorkshire - oh, AND Sean Bean).
It's a pretty good menu of typical Brit fare, even including one of the nation's official favourites - chicken balti (an Indian dish), bangers (sausages) and mash, various pies and mash and TRIFLE!! The last time I went, they also had homemade crumpets , served with lemon curd, which were DIVINE!
Decor is tasteful, service is good and they play footie on the telly. Sorted!
Jones Wood has quickly become my go-to place whenever I have a visitor in town. Â While the bar is narrow and crowded in the front, the back opens up to an adorable pub with lots of space. Â I've pretty much loved everything i've had: Fish & Chips, roasted chicken, the assorted meat pies.. Â and the BANOFFEE PIE, MY OH MY.
super fun and cute spot for dinner!
Jones has quickly become one of my favorite pubs in the Upper East Side. The entire space is lovely, and while I wasn't impressed with it as a brunch spot so much, I was VERY impressed with it for dinner/drinks.
I've only tried the Scotch Eggs, Crumpets, Savory Pies and Banoffee Pie here, Â and would highly recommend any of these. The entire menu looks amazing though, so I'm anxious to get back and try more. Â We had a lot of fun sitting at the bar chatting with the bartenders. Stu is fantastic and very good at what he does.
In all, I can't really say a bad thing about the place and I'm really not sure it's possible to come here and not become a regular. See you guys again soon!
Unimpressive.
The wait was about half an hour at 8PM. Â Not terrible.
We were seated and ordered the lemon curd with crumpets. Literally nothing to write home about. No better than packaged Thomas' English Muffins. Â The lemon curd wasn't doing anything for me. Â So basically it was bread and butter.
I ordered the cod fish and chips. Â It took SO LONG. Â The waitress barely came over to refill our drinks or check on us. I would say about an hour had already passed since we got there. Â Tables next to us that came after us were getting food before us. Â The fish and chips were pretty good. Â The tartar sauce was really flavorful and tasty.
For the dessert, we ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding which Unique Eats on the Cooking Channel proclaimed is a "must try". Â Really? It tasted like a muffin with syrup doused all over.
Plenty of other places to check out in that area, no need to choose Jones Wood Foundry.
This review is for the restaurant alone, not the bar.
Wound up going here twice in one week-- don't know a thing about their drinks, but the food is quite well-done. The butternut squash soup is creamy and well-done; the cottage pie is massively filling and dense (though in my infinite grace, I must have burned my tongue on it at least twice-- it came fresh out of the oven and held its heat quite...well), and the striped bass was done decently well.
The seating is a bit dicey sometimes, and gets crowded-- the second time I went, we were seated at the end of a communal table, and kept to ourselves. Gets a bit noisy at times.
I did notice that the bar area was crowded as all getout, so if you're there for after-work or after-dinner drinks, space is probably going to be at a premium.
Decided to give this place another try. Beers are good but really, the food isn't that great. Had the chicken which was flavorless and bland. The chocolate tart was meh. For the price they charge, the foods not even aesthetically pleasing. I definitely don't believe the people who rave about the food even mean it, either that or they've never had a good, flavorful meal in their entire life.
No need for me to return.
