Decent barbecue, decent price
I know we're all supposed to fawn over that wooden shack bbq run by some wizened old black guy somewhere way off the beaten path (turn left past the creek and get off the paved road, etc). Â But this is pretty good cue for a city based chain and I'm not afraid to say it.
I'm not the biggest fan of barbeque but I love Mark's. It's inexpensive and the food is pretty great. They have quite a few non-barbeque options. Plus, I love the outdoor seating at this location. I always get the burgoo; it's amazing.
I've never ordered anything I haven't enjoyed and I love going on Monday evening because you get free dessert! I would recommend the buttermilk crunch. It's absolutely amazing.
I also really like the honeywings and the grilled veggie salad.
I came here with my family last week for the first time. Â The service was great - our waiter was friendly and attentive without being a hoverer. Â The food was good and there were a variety of sauces. Â I had the brisket and it was a little too fatty for my liking and I don't like super-sweet cornbread, so I didn't care for that either. Â Make sure to save room for dessert because the buttermilk pie is very good. Â All in all, a great BBQ restaurant in Louisville.
Review Source:i am an eater, i was born to travel and to eat lol, my wife and my 11 year old took a short 3 day trip to louisville over easter weekend, and marks feed store was on the top of my list to try out, as we were driving through looking for the place, lots of people out walking around enjoying the first decent day for weather in a few months , as we pulled up to the place i could smell the bbq, we walked in the front door and were quickly greeted and quickly seated !!!! our waitress was D she was great , my son really enjoyed her, she was the main attraction for him lol, now to the food , i had the famous honey wings dinner , it was awesome the best wings i have ever had, and the the fries were awesome , the cole slaw is just the way cole slaw should be !!!!! my wife had the pulled pork and corn bread !!!!!!!!! with the cinnamon butter , mark whoever you are your doing a great job, 100 miles from cincinnati is not to far for me to drive for dinner on a friday night !!!!!!!! thanks to all of your staff , a big thumbs up
Review Source:I was told this restaurant is a local success story and I can see why.
Appetizers - Tried the fried pickles - great! Also ordered a cup of burgoo - the best.
OK, I ordered the fried fish with lemon pepper dinner. Â It came with two sides - I chose baked sweet potato and the burgoo (jambalaya type soup), it also came with
Texas toast.
My dining partner ordered BBQ pork sandwich with fries, and their home brand root beer. A slice of buttermilk pie completed the meal.
Both meals were great!
Our server - it said DeEtta on the bill, but I prefer to call her Dee - was the most pleasant waitress you would ever want to meet. Â Her service was superb, her attitude was outstanding, she was warm and friendly. Â And a great smile, to boot!
I highly recommend this location.
I like Marks. I struggled between a three and four star review. I'm going with three and a half! I have never had a bad meal at Marks. The pulled pork and chicken are not dry which is a plus since smoking meats can tend to dry it out. I always have to order the baked beans. They are the best in town. I also love their onion straws which not everyone knows you can get as a side not just an appetizer. Marks is also the only place I ever order chicken wings that is not a "wing" restaurant. The honey wings are small but so delicious. Beware they are very sticky though you may feel like you need a bath after you enjoy them but its so worth it! One word of advice go on Mondays when you can because they have free desserts!!
Review Source:To be honest, I've struggled to find good BBQ in Louisville. Perhaps this has something to do with Louisville's regional identity crisis (being this close to Indiana sure does make it hard to convincingly pull off being "southern"). That all being said, Mark's is my go-to when I need a BBQ fix! A pulled pork sandwich is my standard with sauce on sauce on sauce (Original, Red, or Hot!).
As far as sides go, I've got one friend who swears by the fried corn on the cob and another on the burgoo (which seems reminiscent of Brunswick Stew for those who aren't familiar with the name). **side note: just looked up burgoo on Wikipedia...and I'm gonna say that Mark's version is a verrrrry distant cousin of "roadkill soup" as it's endearingly called (I'm trying to say it's not questionable or gross).
This past trip I noticed that the menu boasts Mark's very own root beer, so I tried it! Good stuff! Just a bottle worth for the price, but you do get a frosty glass to pour it in.
A final tip -- the first time I ever went to Mark's (Dec. 2011) the waitress asked if I had ever been before and I said no...and she told me that if it's your first time you get to take home a free bottle of your choice of their BBQ sauce! Go get you some!
I'd had Mark's a couple times at UofL when it had been catered. Â I love BBQ and am not that snobby about it, so I've always thought it was good. Â I picked it as a catering option over the holidays, but just got the main course. Â Hadn't made it in the store until today for lunch when a friend of mine suggested it. Â
I think I hadn't appreciated how good it was until today - and now my mouth is watering as a write. Â I tried the cup of burgoo and chicken sandwich. Â The burgoo was thick, hot, and tasty! Â You have to try this regional favorite! Â I've had other versions, but this I wanted to keep eating it after I had finished. Â There is a small hint of heat, but the mix of savory and vegetables is just right! Â Yum!
My pulled chick was delicious! Â I actually cut it in half and was full after the burgoo and half of the sandwich (should be noted I took the top bun off, too, to save calories). Â Bun was soft and chicken was moist. Â Comes with the original bbq (an organish yellowish medium bbq) and I added the "red bqq". Â SO GOOD!
What really takes the cake (or pie), is the dessert - the Buttermilk Pie. Â I did not get any on this trip but have had it a few times...... you better get out your toothbrush because just thinking about it gives me a cavity! Â If you love butter and sugar, this is for you! Â I also saw a dessert I didn't know they had on the menu - oreo banana pudding (ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS PUT TOGETHER?) The menu stated free desserts on Mondays after 4, so you better believe I'll be headed back soon. Â Of which, I'll update my report, you know I will!
Decor was country but not hokey and the location on Bardstown Rd makes it fun. Â The building itself is a unique layout and our service was pretty quick. Â I personally drink a lot of liquid during my meal and they had one of the biggest glasses I've ever seen for me to guzz some sweet tea. Â I'm sold. Â
I have yet to give out a five star, but I'll do it for Mark's.
One extra star for the Honey Wings and burgoo!
I love those honey wings! Â They are marinated, flour coated, deep fried and then dunked in this spicy, sweet honey syrup. Â Yum! Â And the bonus? Â They only serve the "flat" part of the wing! Â My favorite part!
I've never had burgoo before. Â If they all taste as good as Mark's, I will be ordering it whenever I see them. Â It was super thick, slightly spicy and very addictive (I guess it is what Rachel Ray would call a "stoup"?). Â It is exactly what I wanted on a chilly, rainy evening. Â I did try the rib basket. Â But I did not find them to be especially memorable. Â And is it weird that a BBQ joint does not have mac n cheese? I will be getting a big bowl of burgoo and an order of those wings next time.
I loved this place! Food, service & ambiance was great! I had the barbecue chicken sandwich, fries & slaw. It came with a mustard base sauce which was delicious & the chicken was delicious, too. My mouth is watering now just thinking about it. I got full quick & didn't want to stop eating! I will definitely return & come home with a bottle of their sauce!
Review Source:I thought Louisville would be a good place to find solid, if not amazing, barbeque. Â It does exist (Smoketown USA), but not at Mark's. Â The BBQ was no better than I'd expect at Applebee's. Â I tried the following:
Ribs - OK, nothing special.
Honey wings - tasty, but too sugary
Pulled pork - dry and flavorless. Â No taste of smoke at all.
Brisket - not bad, but again, nothing to write home about
Loaded baked potato - not good. Â Minimal fixins on what was supposed to be a "loaded" potato. Â The bacon tasted like fake bacon.
Baked apples - My wife said this was the first time in her life that she has not liked baked apples. Â She loves them but sets the bar low; Mark's couldn't even make this cut.
Buttermilk pie - now this was GOOD. Â Amazingly, it was less sweet than I expected, but the overall flavor was delicious yet subtle.
People are picky about BBQ, so if you're a BBQ snob, you know what you like. Â Luckily, Mark's has offerings for people who don't like to get their hands dirty. Â Their burgoo, lemon-pepper fish, and salmon burger are all favorites of mine. Â Don't get me wrong, I like their BBQ, too, and I like that they let you add the amount of sauce that you want. Â Oh, and the potato salad!!! Â Aside from my mother's, it's the best potato salad I've tasted!
Review Source:My husband never says food was amazing, he always says "hmm it was alright" But when it came to Mark's wings (I know wings at a BBQ Place) he said "Amazing, best wings I've had!" The BBQ was good, the sauce selection was nice, and the wings and cornbread were amazing! This was our 1st BBQ Place to try in Louisville and we give it thumbs up!
Review Source:Growing up in Louisville, I took Mark's for granted like just about every local. However, after moving out west I quickly realized that stumbling upon good BBQ was about as common as finding a hooker without herpes. The closest you can really get to quality anything is Lucille's which is so overblown and expensive, It's hard for me to justify going... the mint julep menu keeps me coming around I guess.
Nonetheless, this isn't a review for Lucille's, so back to the Feed Store. The menu is simple, not too much dollin' up or add-ons to confuse the average restaurant goer. Even better, the prices. A platter typically rests between the 7-8 dollar range, which after adding a giant Ice-T leaves your meal around 10 bucks. I have no complaints. However, if you don't want to pay extra for a good ol' sweet tea, just drink the sauces, they're good enough and there's multiple flavors to choose from... or you could just get water with lemon like every other cheap bastard.
I stopped here on the way back from work last week and picked up some barbecue. I ordered a combo that included ribs, pulled pork, barbecue chicken, 2 sides, French fries and a slice of Texas toast. I checked in to Yelp from Mark's Feed Store and received an offer for a free buttermilk pie. I was very impressed with the service of the ladies taking the to-go orders. When I got home, I was particularly ravenous so I proceeded to devour the food with all the patience of Great White sharks in a feeding frenzy. The pulled pork and chicken were delicious, the ribs were good but not one of the best I've had, the fries were cooked and seasoned just the way I like them and the buttermilk pie was a wonderful way to end the meal. I'll definitely be back for more yummy barbecue!
Review Source:I had some free time while I was in Louisville and had need to check out Kentucky BBQ. Smoked Meat! The rustic back woods ambiance was just perfect. Service was OK to good, The food was great. However they ran out of cornbread.
There were two surprises that would draw me back if I was ever in Louisville again. You must try the Burgoo  and the Buttermilk pie, They are both must haves!
Fantastic service and some of the better BBQ in Louisville. I always go for their BBQ bacon burger with onion straws on it. Is it just me or are all the other reviews here saying "It isn't as good as in my home state!" I know some people take their BBQ seriously but as someone who has lived mostly everywhere from Texas to Minnesota I gotta say chill out. Just because it is not exactly like the BBQ from your (insert state here) does not make it bad. I see a bunch of people saying it is good but giving it low ratings because it's not what their used to. Man up enjoy it and enjoy the thrill of breaking from how it's made back home. Â Tourists...
Review Source:When it comes to Bar-B-Q Â one can become very fussy especially your finicky bear. so when my friend Brian mentioned this as a place he had chosen as top stuff I despite Brian having a good track record was in a "will see" mode. Brian hit it out of the park.
I had many mouth watering choices brisket, ribs, and then some but when my eyes focused on the 'world's largest barb-b-q pork sandwich' as in 1 pound of pulled pork what's a hungry bear to do? Definitely do not ask the bride' permission (she was not with me, one of those what happens in Louisville stays in Louisville moments) so I gave into the temptation. Add in the fried corn on the cob corn and a election of 3 bbq sauces it was let the good eating times begin and 1 pound of pulled pork later I was a very happy bear.
The going out the door on Mark's is I wish we would have got a second time while in Louisville so I could of devoured some poor little piggies rib cage but such was not the case but when I do return look pout little piggy.
Oh just as an FYI I being an honest and faithful bear I could not keep my falling to eating more then I need of Louisville bar-b-q stay in Louisville I did confess to my lovely bride my stray from healthy eating. I share only to say there is nothing one should ever hide from one's bride or groom.
I hired Mark's for my wedding to cater the food. Â We had a fairly informal wedding at
Mellwood Arts Center and did not want anything froo-froo. Â AND, Mark's had the right
price for feeding 200 people. Â They nailed it. Â We had chicken and pork BBQ, baked
beans, potato salad, assorted fruits, and wings. Â Everything was perfect for our
occasion.
I've eaten at this location a few times. Once because I was visiting the area and crazing BBQ. Two other times because my co-workers enjoy it. I've had the pulled pork, pulled chicken, chicken, and ribs with various sides. Now Mark's advertises themselves as a BBQ restaurant. This sentiment is completely false. Of all the aforementioned meats, I have never tasted a hint of smoke. That being said, the food tastes decent. But when you're in mood for BBQ, Mark's will not hit the spot. It's baked. It's a sin to call it BBQ.
The service has always been excellent at this location. One thing worth highlighting is the sides. The fried corn and apples are excellent as are the green beans and baked beans.
Unfortunately for Mark, his delicious sides and great service aren't enough to net more than a two star rating.
Some people, when they find something they like at a particular restaurant inevitably get it every single time they go there. That would be my wife. Other people like to constantly experiment with different menu items. That would be me.
When it comes to Mark's Feed Store, however, something in me changes. Despite all the tempting things on the menu I have gotten the same stinkin' item the last three times! The Mark's Bacon Bar-B-Q Cheeseburger!! I don't know what it is -- perhaps the thick strips of bacon, perhaps the melty cheese, perhaps the slightly charred burger oozing with BBQ sauce or perhaps some combination of all those factors put together. Regardless, I have been relegated by the sheer deliciousness of it, to getting a burger at a BBQ joint...and I'm quite alright with that!
As for the wife, she dreams about their "Honeywings" or what she has affectionately dubbed them -- "Chicken Candy." Â Decent sized wings, seasoned, deep fried and then dipped/drenched in what seems to be a smoked honey sauce. Typically she'll get the "Birds-In-A-Nest" appetizer which includes seven Honeywings and a huge pile of onion straws.
Of the rest of the menu, we used to love getting the ribs. They're the best we've had in Louisville...in fact, my father-in-law basically committed BBQ blasphemy and said they might be better than Pappy's ribs in St. Louis!! (They must have spiked his sauce because this isn't true...but, the ribs are still pretty darn delicious.) Their pulled pork and brisket are both good especially with a little bit of their "Red" BBQ sauce. On the other hand, their chicken cannot be salvaged by the sauce as it's always a little bit dried out. Finally of the sides, we like the onion straws, the spicy fries, the Cole slaw, the green beans and the baked beans.
The portions are fairly large (we almost always take home leftovers), the prices are decent, the service is always spot-on and, if you have a big family, Tuesdays are "Kids eat free days"!
So next time you're at Mark's resist the temptation to order their delicious BBQ ribs and go for the Bacon BBQ Cheeseburger with a side of "Chicken Candy." Or, better yet, make the person you're with order the ribs, you get the burger and wings and experience the best of both worlds!
Local BBQ gone commercial.
First let me say that I prefer Franklin Avenue Beer Depot BBQ (FABD) to Mark's Feed Store. That being said, this is still a great place to get your BBQ fix.
What I like best about Mark's feed store is the BBQ combination meals. You can get a little sampler of all things BBQ depending on your desires or you can just go with the pulled pork sandwich classic.
My problem, as you may read in a lot of my reviews, is commercialism. Mark's has a great location, a solid menu, but there is nothing small and local about it outside of its address. Their meat is really not that seasoned and the sauces are not that different from your corner grocer. I have given this place multiple chances, but for some reason I just can't wrap my bun around it.
I fluctuated between giving this place a 3 or 4 stars. I love BBQ, it is the sort of food that when it is good, holy mole it is unbelievable! In honor of this love, I just couldn't bring myself to give this place more than 3 stars. Don't get me wrong --this  is a good restuarant, even a great one, but hardcore BBQ lovers will find fault with it, unfortunately.
I typically order the pulled pork sandwich platter with deep fried corn on the cob and their seasoned fries. More often than not, the pork is a bit dry. Not to worry though, this can be fixed with any one of their DELICIOUS sauces. This shouldn't be the case though. The pork should be the centerpiece of any true blue BBQ meal --one shouldn't have to douse it with sauce to improve the taste. However, like I said, the sauces are divine. They are really that good.  The deep fried corn on the cob is my favorite side to get  --next to the onion straws. Sweet, crunchy, buttery. A perfect side to pulled pork.
The price, service, and even ambiance is unbeatable here. Perfect for a family dinner or lunch out. Despite my 3 star rating (based on authenticity more than anything else) I still highly recommend this place.
First off, despite the odd name Feed Store it is indeed BBQ. And pretty damn good BBQ at that.
There is a large pig statue out front as the first indicator. The nice little patio tucked behind a few trees welcomes you in to what is clearly no longer a place where you pick up feed for your farm. The space has been recreated into a welcoming restaurant, retaining the high ceilings and exposed walls and beams. It has characteristics of an old barn, yet it is warm and unassuming. The first time visiting it just felt easy. Â Nice and open, grab a table, grab a bite. Great spot for a group or family.
I prefer the pulled pork, but the chicken is also very good. It is the style that is more of the meat straight up, a bit smoked and flavorful, but where you put the sauce on yourself. And I like all the sauces. My go to is to mix the red and orange sauce. Yum. You do need to try them all to see what your thing is.
Also, I was blown away that you can get an entire pound of pulled pork for 10 bucks. We got 2 pounds and had more than enough for 6 folks and took home enough for 3 more sandwiches. Every person was really pleased with their food and it was our cheapest meal of the weekend. (Fam visiting).
I almost gave this 4 stars since I am hesitant to say something is as good as it gets, but you know, if it is, it is. I can't name anything I don't like about this place. The service is great and friendly. The takeout doesn't skimp and it is even good as leftovers. I am super sad that I don't live as close to it as I once did, but I still frequent. I'll never forget you Mark's.
Stopped in to Mark's this week for dinner. Â Was hoping for some good 'Q, but left disappointed.
We arrived one evening around 6:00pm and were seated quickly. Â We began to peruse the menu and decided to order some fried pickles. Â The pickles were easily the best part of the meal for me. Â They were cut so thin, that they curled like potato chips. Â And the sauce that they provided with them paired well.
For my meal, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich platter with a baked sweet potato and fried corn on the cob. Â Food arrived in a decent amount of time and everything was hot. Â Unfortunately, the pork was dry. Â It also wasn't 100% pulled. Â There was a large hunk of pork on the sandwich, that could have easily been pulled apart in the kitchen, but someone chose not to. Â It was also pre-sauced, and while I could have added my own different sauce at the table, it would have been flavor confusion. Â The sweet potato was dry and served with two little containers of Shed Spread Cinnamon spread. Â Disappointing, considering how easy it is to make your own cinnamon butter. Â The corn was decent and I probably could have eaten a couple of ears of that. Â It wasn't greasy at all and had a good taste.
Would I go back? Â Probably not. Â Food was average and service was okay. Â Bardstown Road has a lot going on and I would probably go somewhere else first.
I was visiting Kentucky for work and just had to get some BBQ. I heard that Mark's was good and of course confirmed on Yelp.
Mark's is located in a cute, trendy neighborhood. The building is an adorable little brick building that used to be a gun shop, with an apartment upstairs. I came here after a long day of work with 8 of my co-workers. They were able to seat us immediately upstairs, no questions asked. We started with the fried pickles and the onion straws. Both appetizers were OK, nothing amazing.
For my entree I had a pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries and fried corn on the cob. I was super curious about the fried corn on the cob, but it was a disappointment. The corn on the cob was soggy and didn't have that snap when you bit into it. My guess is that it was either over cooked or it soaked up the oil from the fryer. The flavor was not bad, but nobody wants to bite into soggy corn! The pulled pork was good, not the best I have ever had, but I definitely liked that they offered 3 very distinctly different sauces. I stole some regular fries from a friend and they were much better than the sweet potato fries.
Overall, Mark's was OK BBQ at a decent price.
For a place that was as decorated with awards as it was, I was expecting much more.
Not to say that the food was bad - it just wasn't stellar. Â I would compare the experience to a visit to Outback: the food works fine for satisfying a (enter desired meat product here) craving, but otherwise that's it.
I thought the combo dinner would have been a good way to get a quick overall sense of how the food was. Â The BBQ sauce was tasty, but the ribs were not "fall off the bone" tender. Â Chicken wings were SUPER crispy but pretty heavily heavily doused in honey sauce. Â I thought that the pulled pork and beef were reasonable (albeit a bit light on the portions), but I was a bit disheartened when I found the pulled pork ordered later that night from my hotel's restaurant was infinitely more tender and juicy.
Once all was said and done, the most memorable part of the meal was the massive 32 oz. cup of soda that I was served (and admittedly, could not finish!). Â I think that statement in itself pretty much sums it all up.
Text message from Sis re: meeting my BF for the first time:
"Can't wait to meet J. Â I hope he's ready for some serious grilling, and I don't mean on a BBQ."
(Oh SNAP!)
I'm always in the mood for a good grill so we went to Mark's Feed Store for lunch. Â I got the Pulled Pork Bar-B-Q Sandwich with a side of Green Beans. Â Unfortunately, the Pork was dry and the Green Beans were mushy and flavorless. Â I tried both of Mark's "Original" and "Red" BBQ sauces but neither could do much to jazz up my sammich. Â
J's Combo #1 was better. Â The Honeywings were fried, with a sweet glaze, and piping hot. Â I could easily eat a dozen of these! Â I liked the glaze on the Pork Ribs too. Â But the Coleslaw was even worse than my mushy Green Beans and the "Spicy" Fries weren't spicy at all.
So Mark's was just ok.
My Sis grills better. Â ;)
First, if you are expecting a "real" BBQ joint that slow smokes it's meat; has wood stacked up outside; and has a smoke smell wafting thought the joint; you'll be disappointed. Â This is a glorified Tony Roma.
I ordered the full rack of ribs. Â They are listed as "baby back", but these are way too large to be baby backs; more like loin back ribs. Â Which is fine with me because I love loin backs. Â They had a fantastic amount of meat on them and were well trimmed. Â
They arrived looking like they were taken out of a steamer, slathered with sauce and finished on the grill. Â If these were smoked, I don't know by what. Â Zero smoke ring, zero smoke flavor, zero bark, zero color other than gray. Â Like I said, just like Tony Roma. Â
The sides were fine. Â I had slaw and a sweet potato. Â Service was good and the place was empty when I ate at 2PM on a Tuesday. Â
If you are looking for real, smoked BBQ; you won't find it here. Â I know the menu says they slow smoke their meats for up to 12 hours, but they must smoke the meat for the pulled pork because they sure don't smoke the ribs. Â
I would not go back again.
This was some great BBQ. Â Great fried pickles (you heard me), great baby back ribs, really really really good chicken, and some OK (somewhat dry) beef, and honey wings.
The meat slid off the ribs and had no fat on them whatsoever. Â The honey wings were good, but the honey sauce was a bit too vinegary for my taste. Â The beef was dry and was only somewhat saved by the BBQ sauces. Â By far the best was the chicken. Â I've never had chicken this tender. Â I didn't even know it was possible. Â Now that I know, it'll be hard to eat other chickens. Â
Now onto the sides. There were baked beans, which my friend was obsessed and called the best beans he'd ever eaten. There were fries, that were not fried enough for my taste, but very fresh. Â There was killer corn on the cob, which I devoured, and
Then we got free dessert (because it's Monday, of course). Â I got the hot fudge Sunday, with nuts. Â When the say "with nuts" they really mean it. Â They were very good and very fresh nuts. Â But enough about their nuts. Â My friend got the buttermilk crunch, which he said was incredible, but recommends getting the buttermilk pie instead. Â
All that for $36 flat, not a bad deal.
Large Portions, Great BBQ sauce and good service is the theme of this wonderful eatery. Â It's worth the trip for the deep fried pickles alone. Â But the Ribs that I ordered were so tender that the meat fell off of the bone. Â
Mark's is not for any of you light eaters or anyone on a diet. Â But if you have a craving for a great BBQ dinner in a fun environment. Â I would suggest that you give Marks a try.
I heard good things about this place and was eager to try it out. But I've had better.
We had the pulled pork sandwich platters. I ordered their deep fried corn on the cob, coleslaw and baked beans for my sides.
The coleslaw was terrible, it could have been dressed with dishwater it was so flat and flavorless.
The deep fried corn wasn't all that interesting and when I asked for butter for it, the waitress gave me a look like she'd never heard of buttered corn on the cob. When she brought me a few packs of country crock margarine, I gave up all hope.
The pulled pork was ok. my homemade BBQ sauce is better. Their beans were good and that was about it.
I wouldn't eat there again, I don't think.
With a name like Mark's Feed Store, I was a little skeptical of quality. Â Would this be some laminate-covered, tray-wielding cafeteria set up where people ate as though from troughs? Â I didn't have high hopes to tell you the truth.
But this place rocks! Â Its in this cute brick building, with old vintage signs hanging up and a very fun vibe inside. Â I was so glad I skipped lunch that day too because portions are VERY generous. Â
We ordered the fried pickles because, well, you just have to! Â Fried pickles are ridiculous and crazy and downright delightful. Â Then I ordered a half slab of ribs. Â This came with a huge piece of toast and two sides. Â The coleslaw I got was terrible and I didn't eat it. Â But I am very picky about my coleslaw so don't go by my recommendation on that. Â I also got the baked apple, which was nice & sweet and complimented the sauce on the ribs nicely. Â Ribs are wet BBQ, and you have a choice of 3 sauces on the table to add more flavour if you want. Â The yellow one, which I think was mustard based, was the best. Â
Prices were SO good for what we got. Â All this plus prompt, friendly service? Â ooh, that's dangerous. Â Glad this place is 6 hours away from me!
The absolute best BBQ. Â The mustard BBQ sauce is my favorite. It's pretty cool that you are eating in what used to be an animal feed store (Bardstown Road Location). Â Of the many places that I've had BBQ, nothing compares to Mark's.
The burgoo is excellent and spicy. Â If you are a toast fan, like myself, then you'll love the Texas toast. Â
If you don't mind the heartburn, get a huge helping of the Onion Straw. I'm sure your cholesterol level will go up, but it's soooo worth it. Â I recommend getting the combo plate to taste all of it.
Pretty good barbecue for not a lot of money. I was here for a conference a few weeks ago and the food was good. The portions are fairly large size overall. The ribs are very tender- the meat falls right off the bone. I had a side of the grilled sugar corn and that was great- decent cole slaw as well and a ginormous cup of sweet tea to wash it down. For appetizers we had fried pickles and onion strings which were great. I love fried pickles!!! We had some kind of sweet pie for dessert and I can't remember the name- but it was very very sweet.
The waitress was fantastic- very quick and friendly. She even took a picture of our group for us. Overall it was a fun time and great for a hungry group.
