This place was excellent!!! They had a variety of beverages that aren't sullied with HFCS. My addiction of San Pelligrino was available which made me gitty with excitement! Also, they serve alcohol, so this is NOT your average deli! I ordered the vegetable sandwich and my hubby order the Ahi Tuna sandwich which made me a tad jealous, but he was nice enough to offer me a few bites. My only gripe is that this place is very small inside, but I imagine in the summer it doesn't matter as much since there is ample outside seating. Definitely the highlight of our visit in Colorado (in terms of grub!).
Review Source:So I finally got around to trying this oh so popular sandwich place.
I did the brisket and pastrami (my friend and I split each others sandwiches like good foodies should! ) Â and both were tasty but the pastrami was the hands down better of the two. Â The pastrami was exactly what I expect from a quality restaurant however the brisket was just a bit too sweet for my taste..
Quality, handcrafted, thoughtful food and it showed.
Only con was I would have preferred a much larger stack of Pastrami but perhaps the only place to get this is back East...
I will be back.. soon!
Everything on the menu sounded so delicious I couldn't choose. Do I want the truffle egg salad? The amazing (and filling, I'm told) Cuban? What about the Italian, which I hear is da bomb? What about the brisket, with its caramelized onions and incredible flavor? Luckily, the line was almost out the door so I had plenty of time to pick.
I ended up with the smoked turkey (with brie, pears, cranberry honey and arugula) and thought it was wonderful. Got to try the brisket and it was as good as everybody says. They really do use top notch ingredients here and make some delicious (if rather simple) food. Some people think the prices are too high? This isn't Subway! You would pay this much for decent ingredients and good bread. I'm happy to see this small deli do so well and I will definitely be back!
FAVORITES... REUBEN, Â A BREAKFAST SANDWICH WITH SMOKED TURKEY, WILD FORRAGED MUSHRROOMS AND SWISS, AND THE CUBANO
You could honestly pick anything off the menu and i would be delighted at whatever was put in front of me, and I have not said that about any resturant before. Â The meat and quality ingredients they use are hands down top notch.
I usually ask for some deli meat to go as the smoked turkey is so smokey, you might mistake it for bacon!
On my recent trip to Denver, I had the chance to visit Masterpiece deli twice. Â Once for takeout and once as a sit in.
On a day trip we called ahead and ordered their Cubano sandwich. Â The bread was hot and toasty and the pork was so flavorful. Â It wasn't the leanest sandwich to have, but it wasn't meant to be . . . just the right amount of fat to make the sandwich delicious and wanting more.
The second visit, I had the yogurt and granola (yes, quite the opposite side of the meal spectrum). Â The vanilla yogurt was fresh and the granola was crunchy. Â The nice added touch was the diced up apples that they topped the dish up with . . . I had never had that before, but i did like it.
Steve came by and chatted with us for a while and that's when I learned about their new addition - Denver Bacon. Â Their own creation. Â I didn't get a chance to try it, but it's out and ready to be tasted. Â I can't wait til they start shipping it so I can try it in So Cal.
Great view of the city.
Oh boy. After scouring 'Eater' in Denver, I spotted this delicatessen and made my mind up quite quickly.
We ordered the turkey sandwich and the brisket, both with the side pasta salad.
Turkey with brie, pears, arugula, and cranberry spread was yum yum YUM. It tasted just as expected but the brie and arugula really made it tasty. The brie was creamy and the crunch of the fresh arugula was more appreciated that horrible leaf lettuce found on most sammies.
I tried half of the brisket sandwich and fell in love. If you love brisket or beef stroganoff, this is your dish. The meat was creamy and I made such a mess but I didn't care. I managed to get all of it in my mouth so my stomach was very pleased.
Their pasta salad is some of the best I've ever had. It was vinegar based so no worries if you're not a mayo lover.
It's a bit pricey, but it's to be expected with fine quality ingredients and meats. I'd expect the same from my Chicago neighborhoods. Think $9.5-$12
Outdoor seating is nice and there are constant happy hours. I highly recommend this place, even though I'm not from Colorado.
See my sandwich pics!
Denver's sandwich scene is generally disappointing. Masterpiece, though  is the rare exception. I love the Philly influence that has started to seep its way into their menu. The pork roll egg and cheese bagel...just like home. A Schmitter makes an appearance every once and a while. A solid menu of high quality, creative, and delicious sandwiches.
Review Source:I went back to try the brisket sandwich today...and was underwhelmed :( My friend felt the same way (we shared). After much analysis, we decided that the "taleggio fondue" was the problem. It was pretty bland and there was just too dang much of it. "It took away from the lovely brisket," said my friend, and I think he was right. Oh well. The smoked turkey sandwich sounds great, so I'll probably give this place a 3rd try, but only because I can walk to it.
Review Source:I tried the greasy sandwich. Â Forgot what it was called but just remember that I didn't have to apply chap stick for at least a few days. Â It had pastrami and cheese. Â Every veggie you want to put on your sammy they charge you for it. Â Hopefully you don't like a bunch of veggies because this isn't the place for you, unless you don't mind dropping a bunch of money. Â Overall the sandwiches are good.
Review Source:Maybe I'm a jaded East Coaster, maybe I went on a bad day but if this is the best deli in Denver, as some of the reviewers say, then Denver needs to get it's act together.
First off the place is disorganized and the counter positioning is very confusing. Secondly the staff needs to do a better job of cleaning. Table were left a mess, sticky and covered in trash.
I ordered the Reuben. The meat was exactly how pastrami should taste, just the right amount of salt and fatty ends. The bread was a different story, it was not real rye, it more resembled Wonder Bread with caraway seeds. It was mushy and flavorless. I complained to the counter "help" and I thought they were going to throw a bottle at me.
WOW, YUM! Masterpiece never fails to create the utmost in gourmet sandwiches and deli fare, though calling it deli fare hardly serves it justice. (I.e. white truffle egg salad and slow braised beef brisket) Every meal from this place is a feast for the senses. From their iconically simple brown paper packaging down to the herby-butter dripping from the crusty, freshly baked baguette that holds my hot ham and swiss. Everything on their menu is spectacular, and the cooks are chefs in training and it shows. Really, I have worked with former employees of this place at high end restaurants and it is immediately apparent where their gourmet inspiration comes from. They also have a great beverage program, including alcohol as well as non-alcoholic drinks that are tasty (I personally recommend their iced tea, just plain yummy!) Whether it be for breakfast or lunch, now even dinner (they're open until 8), Masterpiece has something rich and delicious to satisfy your cravings. The whole crew there is always cheery and polite, despite getting put through the wringer every day with the rush on for about 5 hours! The only downfall here is the price point, which is higher than I can personally afford every week, but you get what you pay for, and since I can't visit every day, it keeps it special, too.
Just a tip, if you're in a hurry, call in your order ahead. They get VERY busy basically all morning until mid afternoon, so if you don't you might be waiting 20-30 minutes or more for your order.
Worth every penny and the wait, Masterpiece has a forever place in my heart!
I've heard really good things about this deli and they are all true.
It was a busy Saturday afternoon, but the staff was friendly when taking our order and when our number was called out I practically kissed the food runner I was so hungry.
My +1 and I shared the ITALIAN- Biellese meats from NYC, mortadella, capicolla, salami, pepperoni, Parma prosciutto, provolone cheese, onion, tomato, arugula, vinegar, oil & black pepper aioli on ciabattaand and the SMOKED TURKEY - Thumann's mesquite turkey breast, French Brie cheese, seasonal pears, arugula,
cranberry honey on toasted wheat bread. Each came with a side, pasta salad, also so good.
While on the pricey the sandwiches really were so good!
In general, I would be absolutely annoyed by this place. The band-wagon attention over this place makes me ill. Also, the crowd eating at this places tends to the be ultra-annoying LoHi types who think they are simply as cool as it gets. Regardless, I must say the braised brisket sandwich was possibly one of the most delicious things I have eaten in a long time. At first site, it looks somewhat unappetizing - the meat appears whiteish. But take one bite, and you will be blown away by the absolute deliciousness of this place. Granted my sandwich, a small bag of chips, and a small drink cost $14, but nothing is too much for pure tastiness.
Two things to note (as many others did) - they do not have extensive hours. And also, they take forever to nmake a single sandwich.
The Italian sandwich is without a doubt one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Although pricey, Masterpiece puts out quality, delicious food. They have some really unique flavor combinations and use plenty of local ingredients which is a plus. Sometimes there can be a long line and it may take longer than expected to get your food, but it's always worth it in the end.
Review Source:IT'S FABULOUS!
Everyone loves this place but I thought that this former New Yorker was too above it all to really love a Denver delicatessen. Â I've tried so many in the last 20 years and say "meh, I've experienced better".
NO MORE, this place's food put the widest smile on me I may have ever had from food. Â Everything about the brisket sandwich was perfect- the quality and preparation of the meat (so moist and juicy), the meat-to-bread ratio, and slaw on the side, made this a world class sandwich that any foodie will never forget. Â My peeps adore the egg salad and cubano. Â I need to try more but I need my brisket fix, need it real bad.
I hope they open more locations because this food's a real treat!
It's not the absolute best sandwich I've ever eaten, but pretty darn close. Â
My review is based solely on one visit and I got the pastrami special. Â I'm not even a fan of pastrami, but the sandwich was totally on point. Â Perfectly toasted thick rye bread, lots of hot grilled pastrami, perfect amount of 1000 island spread, and the deliciously cool cole slaw to compliment the sandwich. Â I got the pasta salad and it's one of the best i've ever had. Â
I want to go back soon, and I would like to order something else, but I'm sure I'll get the pastrami special again.....it's just too darn money too ignore. Â
BTW, the place was a little busy (I went at 3:15 on a Thursday) but my to go order was walked out to me in about 5-6 minutes.  Which is a very tolerable wait considering they make everything fresh and I did get a hot sandwich.  Having read reviews about the seating issue, I brought along my own drink and I walked over the  bridge to the park by the Platte River and enjoyed my sandwich under the sunshine.  But there were some seats available when I went.
$10 a sandwich is not that bad considering the quality.
Smoked turkey, melted brie, pear, and cranberry honey on bread.... a masterpiece of a sandwich it was!
I never thought I'd pay $10 for a sandwich, but that was damn good and lasted me for a snack later. There is seating inside and out with a great shaded view of dt Denver. Yummy food on a beautiful day -- Mmm, mm!
I love Masterpiece! I lived in Denver for a few years and this was always one of my go-tos! It's fun, consistently delicious and they've now extended their hours, which is great for grab and go!
Their breakfast bagels, salads, pasta salad and sandwiches are all fabulous. They really stick to that homey, simple, deli-fresh-like style and it just works.
I like the alternative/inked-up waitstaff who seem really hard working. They come across focused and passionate, but always greet you with a smile.
The only thing that prevents me from giving Masterpiece 5 stars is the prices. $16 for my favorite cobb-style salad with chicken is pushing it for me, guys. I am ALL about spending more money for organic, local and all around higher quality food, but $16 for a salad before I've even tipped, is a bit inflated.
I still love you though, MPD! See you when I come back to the old neighborhood!
The best sandwich I've ever eaten title is a huge deal. Yet, I do not hesitate for a second when awarding this honor to the Pastrami Surprise at Masterpiece Delicatessen.
This place has been on my radar for over a year so when my Mom reminded me of "that yummy sandwich place in the Highlands" for my Saturday-post-hike meal, I knew it was meant to be.
While I was tempted to try the egg salad, I went with the pastrami and would recommend the same for pastrami lovers and haters alike. The bread was fantastically toasted (and I'm not usually a fan of white bread), the thousand island was zesty and not too overpowering and the pastrami was pastrami at its finest.
As far as sides go, the pasta salad is the way to go. Not too oily, and full of yummy veggies, this pasta salad rocks.
All in all, the perfect post-hike meal and the best sandwich I've ever eaten. No joke.
All the other 5 star reviews is guilting me into giving a higher review, but I am not going to bend. Â I got the Cubano sandwich and it was pretty good. Â I like the pork as it was pretty good and tender. Â I ordered it with brown mustard as I am not a big fan of yellow mustard--the brown was a good choice. Â The sandwich was really really salty in my opinion and I like salt! Â What I determined is that it was the pickles--so just keep that in mind. (I actually liked the Cubano sandwich better at Steubans).
My sister got the reuben and it looked pretty good and I think she liked it.
It is a little busy here at lunch time and it took a little bit to get a seat as the place is pretty small. Â
I would try it again even though it is a little pricey, but seems like good quality stuff.
It was 3:15 when I made my way over there, and I was worried that it'd already be closed. Â Was SOOOO happy to find that it's now open until 8pm every single day! That's a huge win for our neighborhood!
I got an applewood bacon breakfast sandwich, which is the best $5 meal any person could ask for. Â My boyfriend had the Italian and his little brother got the pastrami. The staff is friendly, and easily made some of our 'no onion, hold the tomato, egg whites only' requests. Â Seating outside is lovely, and the food comes quickly. We all left happy.
After taking a gander at the reviews here and noticing that people seem to have two primary complaints: 1) Pricey for a sandwich, and 2) Small/not a lot of seating/busy, I'd like to begin this review by addressing those things: 1) The food here is worth every penny and, quite frankly, given the quality and meager size of every other sandwich place in Denver's offerings, it's worth more. 2) Yeah, it's not like you'll be guaranteed a place to sit and eat if you come here at the rush. So, plan ahead. Call your order in. Walk three blocks to commons park and sit down on the grass to eat there. Stand next to your bike and gobble the Masterpiece deliciousness up. Or, get up at 8:30 am and in by 9 on the weekend.
Now that that's out of the way, not much else needs to be said. Every sandwich here is a creative take on a standard offering (with the egg salad and tuna being maybe my favs) and I have never had something here that was not executed perfectly. And I am so glad they are open late. For those of you who have been hating on MD for how busy it is, go grab yourself a sandwich for dinner. No lines, plenty of seating and good beer. I'd gladly pay twice as much for supper here with a can of Dale's Pale Ale than I would for mediocre bar food and craft pints across the street at Amato's.
Wow! Amazing sandwiches, I can't believe it took me so long to find this place. Â The food was delicious, but not cheap. Also it's SO crowded inside and there is a lack of seating for how busy this place is. Plus it took about 20-25 minutes to get our sandwiches which seems insane. The fight for seating is out of control, and it was hot inside and out which probably didn't help. Plus all the people waiting for their food to go makes it even more crowded.
My friend had the Cuban (delicious! I snagged a bite.) I had the roasted veggie and it was also delicious but could have used a bit more bulk to the sandwich itself. Lots of bread, not so many veggies.
I think I have to come back here and try it when it's not lunch time and see if this improves on anything...
I just realized I haven't reviewed Masterpiece and I have no idea why or how I forgot!
This is my "go to" place for fresh, tasty and creative breakfast and lunch grub. Â It's down the street from home and at times I think I can actually smell the breakfast griddle in the morning. Â Like a sirens song about bagels, provolone and REAL egg it draws me down to eat. Â It's such a novel idea, REAL eggs on a breakfast sandwich...wow..so brilliant. Â Lunch is to notch as well. Â I usually stick to the egg salad on toasted bread. Â (i add crumbled up bacon) Â The salads are huge and made fresh. Definitely a meal in itself. Â
They are now open till 8 which is great because by then the sun is setting on Denver and its a great time to get a seat on the patio, put your feet up and enjoy the view.
Couple notes-
They have Beer.
Coffee is "OK"
Every daily special I've ever had was tasty
You can call ahead to order
WIFI (ask them for the password)
Watch out for the runny egg explosion when you bite into the bagel
They don't open till 8 am (arghhh)
Man this place is tasty. Â I had the roast beef and it was a total winner. Â The bread was crispy and crunchy yet soft on the inside (although maybe a bit too greasy for my liking), and the ingredients really fresh. Â My hubby got the smoked turkey, which had brie, pears, arugula, and cranberry honey on it - yum. Â We actually ended up sharing both, since they were so good. Â I also had some iced tea which was perfectly steeped, and I liked that they had pitchers of free water.
The wait on a Saturday afternoon was a little long, and the actual wait to get the sandwiches was pretty long (20 minutes or so), but luckily we scored a table so we were weren't just standing around like other patrons.
The sandwiches are restaurant prices - so a little pricey for a deli. Â But they are really, really good. Â Highly recommend, whether you're able to snag a table (inside or outside), or just get it to go and have a little picnic in the sunshine. Â Definitely going to return, as there are quite a few sandwiches that sound amazing!
Overall, go check it out. The sandwiches are good, but pricey. Don't go in expecting an open table to spread out at.
Small digs but good sandwiches. We ordered the daily special and the Tuna. The special sandwich was much tastier than the tuna. The tuna was just ok. Not quite the hit that I expected it to be. It was also very small. Enough to satisfy but don't expect it to fill you up if you are hungry.
The space was quite cramped when we went but we managed to find a small table. We did have to climb over another table to get to it, but it worked. They have a nice patio which would be great on a summer day.
The prices were a bit steep for the size of the sandwich. The quality was defintely good, so I guess that makes up for it. I'm looking forward to going again.
Seems like everyone had the same idea on Saturday morning! It was a beautiful spring like day, hangover galours, perfect sandwiches drenched in butter! Â Oh my goodness.
We ordered the Cubano, Ruben, Ham and Swiss, Grilled Cheese, and a PB and J. Â It was a sandwhich feast! Â
Our order took about 30 minutes. Â We sat in the patio salivating and roasting in the sun, but it was all worth it. Â Scrumptious bites of perfectly blended flavors.
Prepare to wait for your food... totally worth it.
I grabbed a late lunch here and chose a greek salad plus chicken. Â It was delicious. Â I loved that it had spicy peppers in it and the flavors melded together really well.
I loved the menu and cannot wait to come back and try some of the sandwiches which appear to be their specialty. Â This is a small deli on the inside, but it has a nice sized outdoor space.
I had gone here once for breakfast before and enjoyed a delish bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, don't get me wrong....it was good, but this place didn't become amazing until I enjoyed lunch here!
I got the Turkey sandwich which comes with Brie, Arugula, sliced pears and a cranberry sauce. All ingredients were top quality and great fresh flavors, the bread (which I think is described as just Wheat toast) is perfectly toasted and has a truly homemade flavor. All sandwiches come with your choice of side, I believe it's the standard chips, cole slaw or pasta salad. I went with the pasta salad and did not regret my decision. My next visit to Denver I will for sure be back again for lunch.
Note this place is tiny inside, don't get overwhelmed when you first walk in. Perfect place to visit on a nice day because they have a lot of tables outside on their patio overlooking the street for some people watching!
I think we were expecting a little bit more as far as space on the inside. Â We arrive and the place was hopping. Â
We must have waited in line for 10 minutes or so before ordering at the counter. Â We ordered some sandwiches and two latte's. Â There are only about 8 tables and a narrow bar by the windows. Â All the tables were taken and everyone was hovering to take the next available tables. Â I know they were busting their butts cooking, because I could see them cooking, it just wasn't fast enough. Â We waited another 30 minutes for our sandwiches. Â Anybody else think that's a little long for sandwiches?
To their credit my Italian Sandwich was great. Â The bread was super fresh and crunchy and the ingredients were perfect. Â Sam had the Cubano sandwich and true relationship fashion I always steal a bite of his food and give him a bite of mine. Â The same could be said for his Cubano, bread was delicious, it was the total package. Â We both got a side of pasta salad that had a light mustard base with small sliced squash, it was heavenly.
I think this place might be better in the warmer months to take advantage of the out door seating and not being limited to the small indoor seating area.
I highly recommend ordering ahead and not expecting to get a table when you come in.
Seeing as the place is small enough as it is, I have reservations about giving away my precious 5-star rating. However, some places just ace it out of the ballpark, and and Masterpiece certainly is one of those places.
Where should I start? Perfect friendly service, absolutely ace menu, and a location that's literally a quick stroll across the bridge from my work. As many have stated, the Cuban is good. The pulled pork sandwich is good. The salads are good.
Everything... is just so damn good.
Licking every last drop of the cranberry honey off the paper my Smoked Turkey sandwich was wrapped in... I'm in a little bit of shock. How can a sandwich be that damn delicious?
My husband's Italinpan on Ciabatta with a side of potato salad was equally as satisfying... He's literally moaning and nodding his head a little with every bite!
We will be back for more MD love.
