So, I've had baked goods from Mermaids a few times. The pie was amazing -- just like the pies you would find in your grandma's kitchen. I have yet to have a better pie in this area.
That being said, the "filled" cupcakes are some of the worst cupcakes I've ever had. The filling was basically one bite of frosting textured filling in the middle, the frosting on top was bland (could barely tell the difference between buttercream, cream cheese and lemon), and the cake itself was greasy. We threw the cupcakes away.
So, Pie YES, Cake/Cupcakes NO.
Mermaids bakery is a gem among semi-precious stones in Denver's cake and cupcake industry. It is carefully run by an owner who refuses to cut corners, whether it comes to ingredients or customer service. Other Denver cake and cupcake shops cut costs by substituting shortening for butter or using chemical-filled mixes while still charging high-end prices. Others use high-quality ingredients, but offer up dry cake or just don't take the time to make meringue butter cream. Like I said, mermaids is the exception. They make real-butter Swiss buttercream (a light and fluffy distant cousin to the greasy, ultra-sweet version of american buttercream you're probably used to) and flavorful moist cake. They also make amazing gluten free cakes that my mother - who is celiac - absolutely loves! Don't waste your money on chemical imitations of what a cake should be. Go to Mermaids instead!
Review Source:I used to work around the corner from these guys and have used them for a few special occasions. Â One they are always friendly and have great customer service. so disregard "JH", his 2 negative reviews and his no friends. Â
Two - they are by far one of the best bakery's in town! Â They can accommodate pretty much anyones requests!
I had a pretty delicious cake ordered from here for my birthday. Â It was an almond cake with coconut filling and butter-cream frosting. Â The cake was incredibly moist and delicious. Â It also had excellent flavor. Â The only downside for me was that the butter-cream was insanely sweet, so we could only eat a little at a time. Â That didn't deter us from eating basically the whole thing in the course of a week though.l
The cake was decorated beautifully. Â I would definitely order from Mermaids Bakery again.
I had a cake made for my 1 year anniversary because my fridge went out and ruined our cake we were saving for this date. The cake we received was better than expected. My wife said "This is better than the cake we had for our wedding!" Overall experience was very positive. Their on-line booking option worked out great. They were able to over deliver on my expectations.
Review Source:The cake I ordered was so BLAND and tasteless we didn't even eat it. Â I got it for my boyfriends birthday and was disappointed it tasted so bad. Â The decorations were plain and they charged we an extra $15 to put a chocolate outline on the top of the cake!!! Â
I wasted $45 on this cake...save your money and order from
Big Fat Cupcake in Cherry Creek!!! Â
Honestly....this place is terrible.
I ordered a specialty cake for my niece's birthday party and we were very happy with the cake - everyone agreed it was beautifully decorated with white fondant and purple flower accents. They were able to help suggest some great flavors for the cakes and fillings and directed me to a two tier cake that was perfect for our number of guests. The cake was delicious!
Review Source:Mermaids Bakery is tucked into a little shop on Champa Street, and has a variety of excellent cupcakes with decadant flavors such as Samoa Scout (inspired by the Girl Scout cookie), PBR (peanut butter and raspberry jelly) and Cinnamon Churro. Â Mermaids also makes darling and delicious mini-pies for $5.25 - the sweet tart cherry is great. Â However, whenever I'm there, the cupcake selection is low and there are only one or two flavors for pie.
Review Source:I ordered the regular chocolate cupcake and the mini cupcakes. First things first. why does half the cupcake stay on the wrapper once unwrapped. I was really annoyed by this. The cupcake was a bit stale maybe a day old and frosting was stiff. Â I had to use a fork to scoop the rest off the wrapper. I ordered a dozen minis and was told that they all had to be the same flavor. Once I picked up my order all 12 minis were stuffed inside a small box. Presentation was pretty lackluster. Also it's safe to say that you will not be drinking coffee, latte or juice with your order. Mermaids does not sell refreshments or beverages. Â Unfortunately, this place does not live up to the hype.
Review Source:Now THIS is what I'm talking about. Â Located on Champa Street in the heart of downtown Denver and by a shady bus stop lies this tiny bakery with a cupcake genius. Â This bakery is like my light at the end of the tunnel for Denver. Â If you're looking for a heavenly gluten-free cupcake, look no further. Â I can honestly say that I like their gluten-free cupcakes better than their regular glutinous cupcakes. Â So we tried the Strawberry Lemonade, gluten-free Red Velvet, and a gluten-free Dark Night and here's what I thought:
Strawberry Lemonade: Â It was a lemon cake with a strawberry frosting with fresh chunks of strawberries in it. Â The cake was light and moist and the frosting was a light, whipped frosting that melted in your mouth. Â And this interesting cupcake was topped with a plastic straw in an attempt to be "cute" and "witty" but it honestly looked a little tacky...
Score: 8/10
GF Red Velvet: Â This deliciousness was moist, light and fluffy; just the way I like it. Â Unlike most gluten-free foods, this cupcake didn't crumble and unravel the moment I peeled off the wrapper. Â It actually stayed in one piece. Â Now I'm always skeptical of Red Velvet because EVERYONE claims that they have the best red velvet and blah blah. Â Well there was no surprise that I've tasted better than this but I give them kudos for making a great gluten-free Red Velvet that DOES top many of the Red Velvets I have tasted in the past. Â Although they used their regular whipped frosting instead of creating a cream cheese frosting, which is traditionally paired with Red Velvet. Â I think I would have preferred the cream cheese frosting but meh it was still good.
Score: 7/10
GF Dark Night: Â Ok why hasn't any one else come close to this gluten-free goodness level?? Â This chocolate frosting on chocolate cake is better that a majority of the non-gluten free cupcakes I have tried in my lifetime. Â It's also hard to find a cupcake where you love BOTH the cake AND the frosting. Â Some people prefer buttercream but I prefer a nice light whipped frosting. Â This bakery has wonderful light and fluffy everything! Â Not too sweet, and not too rich.
Score: 9/10
I love cupcakes. Â I love them in all shapes, sizes and flavors. Â I have never met a cupcake i don't like. Â That said, I've had mediocre and really good cupcakes from this place.
We ordered a bunch for a company thing and the whole process started a bit rough. Â When we called to place the order we were told to pick one kind per dozen. Â Not exactly what we wanted. Â We were looking more for the "cupcake presentation". By that i mean a table full of different colors and flavors. Â Not just 4 or 5. Â So we were told to pick up the cupcakes and we could exchange some of ours for other flavors in the case. Â I get it, they don't want to make 12 different kinds of cupcakes and have extras go bad. Its easier to make a few big batches of the same kind.
My coworker goes to pick up the boxes today (mind you they have a $10 delivery fee and we work 6 blocks away, anyways) and asked to exchange some flavors. Â This did not go over well and she got push back from the people working. Â We were told this won't be an issue when we called to place the order last week. Â We tried to be as respectful as possible and asked several times on the phone if this would set them back for the day. Â They assured us it would not be an issue...... Â So some mis-communication amongst employees as to what the policies are. Â Kind of annoying... I mean there are other places on the mall to get cupcakes.
Some of the cupcakes today tasted like they had been made in advance of our order... like a day or three. Â The ones we got from the case this morning tasted delicious and fresh. Â So I'm not sure what to make of this. Â I guess the moral of the story would be to buy them same day and maybe call ahead (like an hour) to find out if they have enough for your order size. Â I'm not sure i would order a large batch in advance again.
2012 Review #80:
Keep in mind that I'm reviewing the cakes we were given at a Yelp event. I consulted their website and they mention that everything is made from scratch with local ingredients. They also make gluten-free cupcakes, so that would make me think they do generally make everything from scratch, especially since they also make specialty cakes. Maybe they made us something different since this was free for Yelpers, but these were not very good,
For one thing they were placed on a table, with no one from the bakery, with no labels of any kind. What if I have an allergy? Or do not like certain flavors? Some things you can figure out by looking, but you cannot tell a cream cheese frosting from a vanilla buttercream, etc.
We chose what I think ended up being a lemon cupcake, a white cake with marshmallow frosting, a chocolate cake with chocolate marshmallow frosting, and some sort of spice/maple cake. That sounds like a lot, but not when you only take one bite of each.
The "lemon" was extremely subtle. So subtle that it could have not been lemon, just yellow. The maple-y one had a pretty nice frosting, but the mouthfeel was greasy, and  the cake was just bland. The texture and taste of all of the cakes tasted straight from a box to me. The chocolate/chocolate cupcake couldn't even get unwrapped from the wrapper; the crumb was so delicate that it just tore in half. To me both the chocolate and vanilla cakes tasted just like a box. The marshmallow frostings were ok but they were extremely sweet without much added flavor. Those small cupcakes are $2.5 each, which is a rip off. $1.5 I could see. Oh well. Scratch another one off the list.
This is one -- if not THE -- best bakery for special occasion cakes in the metro area.
They offer a wide assortment of delicious, standard flavors for wedding, quinceanera, and other special occasion cakes but also dabble in unique, experimental and downright amazing flavors to help make your event even more memorable.
Their fondant work for custom cakes with big design flair is top-notch and I've often found myself staring at their amazing piping and detail work from the window facing Champa.
I've also ordered cupcakes from Mermaids for random office parties and home get togethers and have never been disappointed. While I personally like a little less frosting on my cupcakes, I've never gotten complaints from those around me and the flavor of the frosting is fantastic. I suppose it's better to scrape off a little than not have enough of this tasty goodness!
The cookies are also a favorite among my circle. The red velvet cookies are uniquely decadent and they're always trying out new flavors so stop in often!
Fun bakery on Champa in the heart of downtown.
I suspect I will be updating my review to 4 stars but for the first visit it was a 3 star visit. I came in looking for some sweets for my beau. I was greeted quickly but once the greet was over there was no chit chat, and I have to admit I was kind of looking for a little bit of that.
The woman walked me through all the cupcake flavors on display. I was impressed with the amount of flavors and the beauty in which they sat behind the glass case. Oh, let me release from your prison and take you home with me...
I decided on the Strawberry Cupcake and the Chocolate Cookie Cupcake. These were both for the new beau since he has a major sweet tooth and I wanted to do something nice. I only tasted the frosting and they were both super tasty, perfect balance of sweetness, not cavity feeling sweetness like some icings can be.
I can't wait to come back and pick one for myself and also try their homemade pies and cookies. Great location, and a wonderful flavors.
Let's support our local bakeries!!
I never dove head-on into the cupcake craze, but for some reason I got it in my head that I wanted cupcakes at our wedding. I had no idea where to start but picked Mermaids first. We made a tasting appointment and loved every little nibble. Working with them was so easy. Â They knew I was a little hesitant about some of the decor on the cupcakes (it seems like such a dumb thing to worry about in retrospect!) so they called the day before the wedding to be sure I hadn't changed my mind. Â I had.
The day of our wedding, we picked up 130 beautifully decorated cupcakes and one cake topper. Â They looked perfect on the cupcake stand, and the colors matched ours almost to a T. The guests loved them and we kept getting complements- especially on the almond flavored cupcake with pretty blue cream cheese frosting.
We were so happy that we chose Mermaids. Â I keep waiting for another special occasion so I have an excuse to get more cupcakes!
I'm truly not a fan of very many store bought cakes and I'm not big on frosting in general. However, I became curious about this place after getting caught up in the aroma of it each time I visited Laguna's II for lunch since this bakery is at the entry of the building that gives you access to the mexican restaurant.
Though, they are pricey, the mini cakes I have had from them are well worth it. They had a mini pineapple upside down cake that was to die for.
The Cake: I got a gluten-free cake, it was quite good, so high marks there.
The service: could be better. When I walked into their bakery--which has a big front window and appears to be a retail shop--I was more or less directed to their website. They couldn't even tell me what flavors of cake they had, it was all online only, apparently. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a nice storefront downtown when walk-in business is discouraged (I suppose their storefront is only to sell cupcakes, but not being able to tell me the flavor of cakes you make? Weird.).
If, however, you order online, it seems like you'll get a very nice cake.
JESUS H. CHRIST.
I had a cake made here last night at a grad party, and it nearly sent me on a week-long, cake-only rampage through Denver where I envisioned putting my face into an entire cake and growling at people who came close.
This cake is OFF. THE. HOOK. It was an almond and chocolate layer cake with buttercream frosting in between, covered in fondant which had the consistency of some freak combination of circus peanuts (you know, those bright orange candies) and taffy. The flavor combinations were PERFECT- it wasn't too sweet, and the buttercream frosting was so thick, so delicate, so creamy that you forgot where you were and wondered if this cake could be eaten in bed, or in the bathtub.
It was beautiful, and delicious, and it's nice to know that my list of best cake in Denver has a new #1.
This cupcake place suffers an identity crisis I fear. If you're in the market for a wedding cake or need cupcakes for a fancy occasion, I might recommend Mermaids. But if you're just the average ordinary people who needs to to satisfy that hankering for a cupcake, you might feel like a bit out of place.
The cupcakes are tasty, don't get me wrong. But that counter makes me feel like I should be ordering a wedding cake at that counter, and that's not gonna happen anytime soon. The cupcake selection seems limited, and I think they spirit of cupcaking here is that the best cupcakes are available by special order.
And I had to deduct a star for questionable service. On my last visit, the guy behind the counter dropped my bag of cupcakes. They were only slightly smashed, but if I were him I'd probably have checked them out to make sure these expensive cakes were in 100% condition, then offered a replacement.
Looks like I have to keep chasing that cupcake truck for my occasional cupcake fiending.
Bought a box of cupcakes for my clients, including a couple of gluten-free ones. Â Got there at 1pm and by then, all but 5 flavors were sold out and the gal tells me it'll be another 30-45 mins before more cupcakes are ready. Â It's kind of like Starbucks running out of coffee and you have to wait for them to brew more. Â Like, really? Â This is what you do, isn't it?
Anyway, feedback from my clients... gluten-free ones were awesome, incredible, even for those that don't need to eat gluten-free; the regular ones were nasty, gluey, way too sweet. Â BTW, to-go box is terrible (why do so many cupcake places get it wrong?!) so after sliding around en route back to the office, they were pretty smooshed up. Â Sigh.
I was both disappointed and elated with my visit to Mermaids Bakery.
I had gone there in search of a mini-pie or any pie really; I just wanted a pie. Â When I arrived they were either 1) out of pies or 2) didn't have pies that day but either way I wasn't going to have a pie. Â Such is life.
I decided last second to try their lemon meringue cupcake and happily for me I was not disappointed. Â It was sweet without being a block of sugar. Â You could taste the lemon although I am not sure if it's a flavor or if it came from zest my guess is from flavor.
I don't go out of my way to write yelp reviews (as you can see by my two) unless my experience with a place is still stuck in my head a week later, and such was the case with Mermaids.
Man, such a bummer. I really wanted to love this bakery.
I had dealt with the owner of the bakery on a wedding I coordinated, and from my knowledge, the bride had a pleasant enough experience. So, based on that, my boyfriend and I ordered my 30th birthday cake there.
Man, what a total effing mess. I went to order the cake, was helped by a counter girl, and told her I was looking for something really pretty and special, and I wanted to see designs or hear some ideas based on what I had in mind. She asked "Well, did you look at our web site? That's where the photos are." Insinuating that I needed to have just picked a design based on the 16 cakes on their site (half of which are kids cakes or cupcakes). Â
I asked if the owner was in so I could speak to her about it. "She won't be in until Wednesday." It was Monday, I needed the cake Friday, and to place an order I really couldn't wait.
Long story short, I picked a cake. Asked her what size I needed for 20 people and she said she "i'm not really sure because our website says one size but this sheet on the wall says another size. um... i'll just write down the amount of people and we'll figure it out."
When I left I just felt really uneasy, like they didn't really know what they were doing. Â So the next day my boyfriend called back to change the design and to confirm they knew exactly what to do. He talked to and emailed with the same counter girl and felt like she FINALLY had it together.
The day of my 30th birthday party, my dude called them to say we were on the way to pick up the cake. Â A guy on the phone confirmed the cake with my boyfriend... and what do you know- they made the wrong cake. The order (despite two phone calls and an email) was never written down.
In the end, it all worked out. The cake was delivered and it was tasty, but it was the whole ordeal that was exhausting. Not sure if they are just new or just have a bad counter staff, but they need to figure it out. And trust me, I mean this with love. I really want to love this place. It's cute and the cakes are good.
SO- I wouldn't say don't order from them, but if it's for a special occasion, check and double check your order. Maybe even with the owner.
Two stars for the taste and final design (i'll post a picture). Minus three stars for every instance we had to deal with them just to get it right.
In response to Diana's (the owners) rebuttal below: If by "orders that are changed multiple times" means ONCE- then yes, they need to double check the order. My order wouldn't have even changed once if I would've felt an ounce of confidence during my first visit. And just by reading this review, you see that their only misstep wasn't just "not adding a second tier to my cake". I'm no diva, and I could've rolled with that. It was the poor customer service that is what deserved the two stars.
So my friend turned me on to this wonderful bakery palace. Â Â She got her special birthday cake here, it was very unique. Â I thought, "Oh, cake". Â It looked really neat all decorated & pretty, but then I tasted it. Â HOLY COW!! Â Icing is like velvet, cake is spongy & soft & moist & so yummy full of flavor, filling is rich and creamy and luscious. Â I could not get this cake out of my head. Â
I like cake, but I always think of when my dad & I would make box cake in a 9 x13 pan and ice it with home made icing--it was always dry on the dry side, you had to have a large glass of milk with it--which we always had milk with everything at dad's house. Â I digress....
I started taking my husband by on our days off to pick up a cupcake. Â The first time he chided me for wanting sweets early in the day and blah, blah, blah. Â I'm an adult, I make my own decisions. If I want a cupcake for breakfast, I will. Â He fell in love with his first lick of icing, then he made it to the middle of the pudding center--he was in heaven. Â
I love Mermaids Bakery & Pie House, they have made me love cake, cupcakes & frosting. Â This is the best cake or cupcake I have ever encountered--EVER.
On a later note....We were having a BBQ party on fourth of July to celebrate getting married and we were making a spread. Â We asked Mermaids to make a sheet cake (its a BBQ you know, don't want nothin' fancy-ha!) Â and we started looking at all the options for cake & filling. Â We decided on the Strawberry Fields and asked them to put blueberries on top for the Red White & Blue theme--silly, I know but I'm kind of silly. Â They made the most beautiful cake and it was the best tasting cake ever. Â People loved our food, we are really good cooks and they couldn't stop raving about the cake. Â People who are not big fans of cake, try Mermaids Bakery, they will convert you, too.
For all you glutards out there like me (gluten-free folk, for those who don't know), get thee to Mermaids IMMEDIATELY. You know how all gluten-free bakery product touts itself as being OMGJUSTASGOODASFLOUR!! then it actuality ends up tasting like a weird combination of chalk and dirt, texture wise? NOT the case at Mermaids!
In addition to offering their regular wheat-flour pastries and pies and cakes and what have you, they also offer one flavor of gluten-free cupcake a day (you can advance order cakes or cupcakes in any of their signature flavors). And MAN. This gluten-free cupcake is moist and delicious and so incredibly yummy, I'm a wee bit scared they gave me a regular cupcake by mistake.
Other people may complain about a $3.25 cupcake, but that includes tax, and it tastes like heaven. I'm thinking a gluten-free Mermaid cupcake is going to be part of my new daily ritual. And I know where I'm getting my gluten-free birthday cake from as well!
In anticipation for an upcoming trip to Denver that was coinciding with a birthday, I ordered a cake from Mermaids to be delivered to the hotel.
Their website boasts easy online ordering, which I did, on Thursday. Â I actually sent two emails. Â On Monday, I called, because I still hadn't received any confirmation. Â The girl I talked to said that they probably hadn't received my order yet, which frazzled me for a second because we were arriving the next day.
But, the gal I was talking with took my order in two minutes flat, and that was that. Â It would be delivered the next day for a nominal fee.
And it was. Â The birthday boy affectionately referred to it as "the Frankenstein cake", because it was so many different colors and flavors. Â But, in the interest of full disclosure, I basically was like "coconut cake, with whatever type of frosting you think would be good, and whatever filling you think might work with coconut." Â And it looked crazy but god dangit it tasted AMAZING.
It was delicious.
I've tried their cupcakes and their hand pies. Â Both were fresh and delicious. Â
I'm not cupcake expert (I'm just as happy with a slice of cake as I am with a cupcake), but the cake was moist, the frosting was not too sweet, and I enjoyed them very much. I can't wait to go back to try more flavors.
The mini cherry pie was pretty good. Â I don't like a crust that's too flaky (I end up with a mess of crust in the bottom of the tin and a forkful of filling with a dusting of crust), so I was glad that this crust held together pretty well.
For my birthday my family surprised me with a cake from Mermaids. This time we tried the Neapolitan. For a Sunday get together, they coordinated with my family to have the cake picked up on Saturday afternoon.
Neapolitan. A layer of deep chocolate cake and a layer of pink strawberry cake with vanilla butter cream decorated with chocolate dipped strawberries and drizzled chocolate ganache. The strawberry cake layer was underplayed due to the rich chocolate cake layer and the butter cream. Tasted like a marble cake, and a pricey one at that. The strawberries were placed so closed to the edge of the cake that they rolled off during transport. Seriously, you thought that that was the most strategic place for them?
I know Mermaids to be creative. Â At last glance at their website it looks like they've added more creations to their menu. Â I wouldn't count on the them to get the job done right.
Hi. This place has the best cupcakes in Denver.
We finally made it by during operating hours (they close early), and it was so worth the crowded walk on the 16th Street Mall. I had a vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting, and I'm just impressed with how moist the cake was. And it was from scratch. Man, that just hasn't happened here! My husband had chocolate with cream cheese frosting, and he was equally impressed. The prices were great for the quality and quantity. I really want to order a cake from them. Just for me. A large cake. KTHXBAI.
I'd walked by this location on more then once occasion, but it was always in the evening after they were closed. So I've been making an effort to show up during business hours...
My first experience was with an miniature apple upside down cake (with blueberries). It was everything that this type of cake should be, and completely drenched with flavor.
Another day, I picked up a few of their dark chocolate dipped macaroons...incredible. They're so rich it really feels decadent to eat them.
Today, I happened to stop by soon after they had opened (7AM on a Monday), and there was nothing to be had except for the last quarter of a cherry-rhubarb pie (they're not open for foot traffic over the weekend). They said that the best time to come (for a full selection) is around 9:30-10AM, after they've had a chance to fill the case with freshly baked goods, but before they've had enough business to diminish the selection...
...Anyway, they gave me the pie for free, and off I went. And I have to say that this two day-old piece of pie was one of the best I've ever tasted.
Edit: I picked up a piece of raspberry-peach pie the following week, an unusual combination that I can only describe as an incredible experience of flavor. Just thinking about it still brings a smile to my face--it wasn't simply that it tasted good, it actually made me HAPPY.
Mermaids? Â I'm not sure what the connection is between sea fantasy and exquisite baked goods . . . . but, if everything they bake at Mermaids Bakery & Pie House is as wonderful as the tidbits I had the privilege of tasting at a party recently, then, honestly, I don't care if there is a connection or not . . . nor if it makes a grain of sense. These little goodies were wonderful! I shall be stopping in at the shop just off the 16th Street Mall to try more and bring some home to share. Â
Their tag line: Â "Any Time is a Good Time for Pie." Â
Works for me! Â
How about breakfast tomorrow?
After my boyfriend emailed me an almost erotic variety of pastry pictures, I was eager to set foot into Mermaids Bakery and shovel mini-pies into my mouth.
So after having a very difficult time parking (center of downtown parking meters), we dashed into Mermaids. I was so disappointed when their display case was lacking cupcakes, pies, or pastries, and only sported a few sad crumbs and grease blots. The workers were friendly and offered me some cupcakes that were not in the case but they looked so uninteresting. So I asked if they had any mini-pies that they mention available for $3 on their website. And nope, they were not available any longer but could be special ordered.
After lingering in Mermaids I felt obligated to buy something and decided on a cupcake and a mini butter-pecan bundt cake. It was a 5 dollar transaction but the cupcake was dry and the frosting greasy. The bundt cake was okay but I only ate a few uninteresting bites and tossed it.
Not to be pompous, but I bake really well. And I was definitely not impressed with the quality at Mermaids Bakery. And at a "pie house" you would expect an actual pie to be available that wasn't sad and burnt looking.
I'm learning a lot about cupcakes lately. First, when sampling a cupcake place, try not to go with anything in particular in mind. Let them surprise you with whatever they've come up with that day! At Mermaids, I'm pretty sure I had the BEST cupcake of my life. The chocolate chip cookie cupcake still has me wallowing in sugary bliss. The brown sugar crumbles really make the flavor. I've never had anything like it. The chocolate chips were perfect and there were just the right number to balance flavor and texture. The cream cheese frosting was the best I've ever had.
I'm really turning into a cupcake junky. I also had the Vanilla Bean cupcake. I like to sample the simple cupcakes because I think simple things can be harder to be good at and is a good way to compare. The cake itself is ideal - you take a bite and it is so fluffy it melts in your mouth, but firm enough it doesn't crumb all over you. It's miraculous! The churro cinnamon cupcake was another favorite of mine. The taste is subtle which I appreciate! The Cookies N' Cream cupcake was also good - the Italian buttercream frosting with Oreo crumbles on top really made the chocolate cake taste divine!
The cupcakes were only slightly sweeter than the nice lady who sold them to me! And $11 for 5 cupcakes is math I like!
Mermaids swam to the top of my list of cupcake favorites!
I had seen this place on a prior visit to the Peruvian place 2 doors down. Everythign looked amazing and the owner (it's 2 cousins that run it) was there to tell us all about how they started and what their specialties were. One of the chocolate fillings or frostings is even grandma's special recipe! Mmmmm, can't wait to try that! At that time I didn't have an occasion that I needed a treat for but I took their card and have been telling everyone about them!
I did not realize that the red velvet cup cakes were the thing to be trying! And today when I returned the flavors of the day were lemon and german chocolate. But I had a mission - no-one remembered the bosses birthday. There was no card, and there were no treats. I explained my dilemma to the owner and we decided to "create" a cake out of the brownies!
She was great and lined them up all lovely and even added some frosting on top for some pizaaz!
The finished, quickly assembled product looked great! The brownies themselves were OMG! So moist, melt in your mouth, chocolaty... Wowsa!
It is a bummer that there isn't a lot of on demand options, but I kind of like that. If you want something, order it. Â Knowing that it is a 2 gal team and anything that doesn't sell for the day is thrown out, I'm ok with the limited options!
I'll definitely be back! And i'll be ordering a cake next chance i get!
My very favorite thing about this shop is the ingenuity of the cupcakes. For example I was able to try a "black and tan," which was a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting, peanut sprinkles and a tiny nutter butter cookie on top. The owner was also working on a new concoction for Halloween that she called black magic. It was chocolate, custard filled, and black sprinkled goodness. But, the strawberry shortcake was my favorite cupcake not only there, but of the day.
The shop is cute, if a little small. And the people there are so, so, so incredibly friendly. Definitely give this place to try if you are a cupcake lover of any level.
Life is SO unfair!
I drove downtown, hunted for parking, and when I finally get to Mermaid's, all the red velvet are gone!
*sniffle*
Ms. Mermaid said that I just saw the last of the red velvet walk out the door. What a tease.
So since I might never ever be back, I had to try something.
Enter strawberry shortcake! Excellent cake base is pumped with custard and part of a strawberry and then topped with a butter cream (perfectly not too sweet, and sooo creamy) and spinkled with the pretty sugar that comes in flakes.
If I'm ever in the Denver area again, I'll have to remember to come super early if you don't want to go home terribly disappointed.
PS I thought that SF was expensive. But Denver comes really close with shortcakes coming in at $3.25 each.
