Best place to hold your 30th Birthday Party if you're doing a 1920s theme. I read all the great reviews about this place and held my party here! I didn't want to hold it at the Edison, since I had such a terrible experience there. At Next Door Lounge, I had such an amazing time! You can reserve a table for a big group of your friends for FREE! No hassle or cover to get in. All you need is the secret password. There's plenty of chairs to sit and the place isn't big, but it's comfy. The music is a mix of chill music you can dance to, but don't expect top 40 clubbing music.
Review Source:If I wasnt invited here by a friend for his birthday I would never have know this place existed. There arent any bright signs outside advertising its name. Just a man in a top hat and tuxedo outside with a security guard. He asks for your "password" and you go in. Cute speakeasy gimmick. We were seated in our own corner of the bar with comfortable couches with cute decor. The couches were a little too comfy. Had to keep an eye on the friends that were notorious to falling asleep after they drank. There was a huge flat screen playing a old black and white movie. The lighting was dim. Perfect for mischief.
The drinks were subpar. Unless you asked them to make you a specific drink all of them are super citrusy.
Food was great. Pasta balls, pizzas, fish and chips, tostadas, and etc. everything we got was excellent.
Loved the vibe, drinks were ok, food was great. *thumbs up*
it was kind of fun. you need to give the doorman the correct password before he let you in
i wanted a cocktail with egg white and they have it on their menu which is great!
delicious dessert! didn't expect that but they have high quality food.
nice environment, we gather around a cozy sofa and some nice stools. however the noise level is way too loud.
I always have a great time here! It's sophisticated and friendly. From the moment Mr. James greets you at the door and the Maitre D goes above and beyond to make you comfortable, til the pleasantly knowledgeable and efficient servers, like Suzanne, make sure you are well-fed and "cocktailed," you know you have arrived in the right place. And the right night is Whiskey Tasting led by Zachary, who knows his stuff and serves up great beverages with just the right flare! Did I say I love this place!! The right spot for a grown-up atmosphere and phenomenal cocktails...
Review Source:Came for Happy Hour around 7pm on a Friday. Â They have happy from 5-8pm Tuesday through Friday.
The Service ---
Outside the front door, there's a guy in a tux who asks, "What party are you with?" Â I get they're trying to have that speakeasy feel but it just feels kind of pretentious to me. Â Instead of asking what party your with and if you have a reservation, they should just ask how many are in your party and then seat you. Â I mean.. Â It's happy hour. Â Our server was fine. Â It hit 8pm and we didn't see our server so we were worried we wouldn't be able to order that last drink but she came around and told us last call for Happy Hour which was nice.
The Food ---
We got the Grass Fed Beef Sliders which came with sweet potato fries. Â The burgers were good although I didn't like the sauce it came with. Â It was like a really thick ketchup type sauce. Â I just didn't really like the flavor of it. Â The fries were pretty good. Â Good texture. Â We got the Heirloom Tomato Wood Fired Pizza. Â It was more like a flat bread but was really good! Â The tomatoes were perfectly cooked and juicy and delicious. Â We had a few Moscow Mules which had vodka, ginger beer and lime. Â I don't think they were very strong, as I had 3 in an hour and I felt fine.
The Prices ---
The Sliders were $7 and the Pizza was $6 and each Moscow Mule was $6.
This is a nice place for Happy Hour. Â They play old movies in the background which is kind of cool, not that anybody actually watches. Â I will definitely be coming back!
Came here a few weeks ago for a birthday gathering. It was a Thursday Night so parking was easy.
When my friend and I arrived to join the party that was already inside, the doorman kinda gave us a hard time. He asked us for the "code word". We were soo confused. I wasn't prepared to play 21 questions with a doorman. My friend got super annoyed and I was only slightly annoyed because we were not told of this whole password thing.
Once inside very dark atmosphere and mix of a crowd. Not too Hollywood. You smile at someone and they smile back...haha.
Lots of drinks and food to choose from.
Next time I will explore more, for the most part I stayed in my groups particular corner
The reviews ahead of mine say it best... nostalgic.
This place is very weird. Â Kinda twilight zonish in a good way.
Hard to explain, but dress nice and no hats, or maybe that was a just for me rule as I see all sorts of people with hats, humph. Â Anyway I imagine this place is supercool if you have a rezzy. Â Top hat style Fancy shmancy-ness at the front door.
Cool space, good drinks, friendly & knowledgable bartenders. But the vintage feels forced with the Party-City costumes on the cocktail girls, and once the douche bag clientele fill up the place in the later hours, all the magic is gone. Also, what's up with the plate-o-sticks they call fried spaghetti? I'd stop by for a drink in the early evening and then move on.
Review Source:When modern Hollywood culture meets the nostalgic aura of a 1920s speakeasy, you get Next Door Lounge. It's quite a thrill even just entering the place, where you first get greeted by a distinguished looking gentleman (James), who asks for a password and graciously ushers you in. We even chatted for awhile about old Porsches and other classic cars. What a guy!
Inside, they have a ton of good beers on tap (white rascal, allagash, heffs, etc.), and a whole host of other cocktails and drinks too. The staff were friendly, the environment light hearted and unpretentious. I am definitely planning on coming back here in the near future, and so should you!
Hennessy tasting night!
I've been here a few times for random events. I like the atmosphere with it's 1920's feel but with a slight touch of modern. The drinks have been good and the food tasty. The password system is kind of meh, but it's a cool feel if you take someone who's never been. Dates especially. I like coming here for the events and the live music is great.
I hosted my birthday here this year and had THE BEST TIME!!!!
I requested a sofa/lounge area for my guests. Â The area accommodated approx. 12 seating and I had 30 coming. Â I was nervous but it worked out great. Â There was ample standing room for those who wanted to stand, and seats for all who wanted to sit.
They never pressured me to order, but I did purchase 2 punch bowls, which were Great, and then other guests ordered their own things. Â They had no problem splitting checks.
The only thing is that they had guaranteed me the sofa area, but I went a week prior to check out the space, and they had my party moved to a long table. Â I was Very upset about that, but thankfully got it all worked out... Â so I do recommend you speaking to someone in person if you have very specific needs.
I also brought in balloons, decorations and a cake, and they more than facilitated. Â :)
All in all it was a wonderful party, thanks to the great venue!!
I love it here. Â There's a vibe that's very 1920s and it isn't common in Hollywood. Â You're greeted by a man in a top hat who stamps your wrist with the Next Door Lounge logo and when you enter there are comfy seats for you to relax in. Â
The drinks here range from $8 and up and the service is decent. Â There's plenty of street parking and they also offer valet.
It's always nice when a 4 star place is actually 4 stars when you get there. Â This place is absolutely 4 star. Â Very cool hip vibe. Â Has an old school feel, the 20's. Â Old movies playing on a screen, depression era cocktails, and a murder mystery deal every week, Â Violet was our bartender and she was excellent. Â Knowledgeable and could make a great drink. Â We ordered the Vespar, the Debutante, and another drink that had a slight green appearance with some cucumber over the top. Â All fantastic. Â They give out veggie munchies and fried spaghetti pasta. Â The actual pasta out of the box, fried, and seasoned. Â Really good. Â Going back for sure.
Review Source:I had a very good time here as I purchased a Groupon for The Murder Mystery Company's Dinner Theater!! It was a very fun event. Â There is Valet and metered street parking! Â Upon arrival we were greeted by a gentleman/doorman dressed in 1920's attire! He was friendly and took a photo with us! The Groupon said "Doors open at 7:30" and I STRONGLY suggest arriving at that time. We got there at 8pm and they were beginning the festivities so we were seated near the back and the sound quality was AWFUL! This was an audience participation show and some of the people that were given the mic were near the door which made it impossible to hear annnddd you needed to hear the clues that were given out in order to solve the mystery!
There is an automatic 9.00 service charge plus gratuity added to your bill in addition to the Groupon so be mindful of that. Â The actors are all dressed in 1920's costumes and they hand select audience members to be a part of the show. Â If you are shy you might feel a bit awkward as you must get up from your seat and interact with other guests, ask them questions/probe them for information in order to solve the mystery. Â If you like campy/cheesy humor this is for you!!! There was one participant that spoke soo softly into the mic the host said, "You are the first person to remove sound from a microphone!" It was hysterical!!!! That joke might have been a 'you had to be there kind of moment.' Â The mystery was challenging and you will work with those at your table to solve it. Â You are given "crime scene" photos, faux money to use as bribes, a book of clues, a sheet to take notes on and the actors/hosts help you out along the way!
You are served a three course meal, first course was a spinach salad with almonds, cranberries, and a vinaigrette dressing. Â The second course was either a chicken, pasta, or beef dish. Â I chose chicken and they were chicken skewers with an amazing marinade....yum, yum, yum, and YUM! The chicken was served with a really good hummus and pita bread! I really liked it. Â My partner in crime went for the pasta dish and she liked it! The last course was dessert which was a choice of cheesecake or chocolate cake. I had the cheesecake which was plain with a strawberry garnish...supppppper delicious!! OMG!
In the end, we did not solve the mystery but were given the "Last Place" award!! The people at our table were fun! I think this is a great place for groups or birthday celebrations! The decor is very Great Gatsbyish, low lighting, and jazz! I had a wonderful experience with the Murder Mystery Company and would do it again!! I do believe that this place is also a bar and other events are hosted here.
It's hard to earn four stars from me especially for a lounge/club, but I love the fact you do not pay cover and you can reserve a table without a minimum tab!!! I had a group of 8 friends and we were able to get a large comfortable couch. I was able to reserve about two days before our Friday night outing.
It's a very small venue though. Think of one gigantic square with the bar in the back of the square. A square within a square? The drinks are totally the mixology type. The drinks are $10+ for sure. Slow in getting your drink because they are creating a drinkable work of art for every patron in the lounge. There were about three bartenders working the bar. Â Not really a place to get smashed if that's on your agenda. Totally chill and again did I mention nice big couch!!!
The music is freakin' amazing! I hate to say this cause it makes me feel old but the music has a throwback mix. Late 90's to 2000's. I also love the fact they played some up to date music. I think I am a little bias because they played songs from The Great Gatsby soundtrack but it's quite fitting for the decor and theme of the lounge. I have to say though I couldn't give this place five stars because of the volume. Okay, I get it, clubs and lounges are meant for blasting music. But this is more of a lounge and I didn't observe any dancing. You have to practically yell at the person right beside you.
Parking is awful. I did observe a lot of people using the valet out front. The bouncer in the front was kind and called out another associate to lead us to our table where we already had other friends waiting. Would I come back? Yup. I still LOVE LOVE the music and vibe here.
I recently hosted an entertainment event here and the owner, management and staff could not have been better or more accommodating. Â Love the space, the atmosphere, the fancy cocktails and the food is excellent, to boot! Â I kiiiiiiind of don't want people to know about this place and how awesome is - it should continue to be my secret! - but, it is, indeed, awesome. Â And, I love their themed evenings - Gatsby nights, Whiskey Wednesdays, Wine + Cheese, etc.
Their Happy Hour is a great value and runs until 8pm, which is always a plus.
P.S. Shout out to James, the ever-so-classy doorman. Â He's the real deal.
I guess I'm not in the loop of hot spots in LA. Â I never knew of this joint even though I've driven past it 2 or 3 times a week for the last couple of years. Â Guess I don't know shit after all because this joint is NICE!
I only found out about it because Yelp sent me a list of happy hour spots in Hollywood and I saw how close this was to my house. Â So I rolled up at 6pm on a Thursday. Â There was a doorman wearing a 100 year old tux-- that's peculiar. Â He asked if I had a reservation. Â I was thinking "For what? Â Happy Hour??" Â But he was friendly, let me and my friend in anyway and a hostess seated us. Â I thought this was JUST a bar, but it's a whole themed out "speak easy" lounge experience. Â A grown and sexy vibe in here which I liked a lot. Â Nice happy hour specials, hand crafted cocktails, nice little appetizers, a live jazz band who was doing cover songs by Maxwell, Sade and Nina Simone (and it was a GUY singing, LOL). Â Servers and bartenders were friendly & professional. Â I'm all over this joint, I will return.
I wish I could put 6 stars, this place is a gem. Awesome ambiance, great decor inside, feels like you are hanging out with Al Capone.
Drinks are all really good, great mixology, the staff is super helpful, accommodating and friendly, in fact, this is probably the place where the people who work there are the nicest in all of the Hollywood night scene. The owner is also really cool and goes above and beyond to accommodate your needs.
I like the fact that people dress up to go there as well, it really makes it a special place.
MYSTERY DINNER
Good:
1. Audience Participates
2. Chicken and Steak Plate
3. Friendly Service
Needs Improvement:
1. Make teams of 3-4 you can't communicate in large groups because of the noise level.
2. Provide sheets for 3-4 people so we can keep track of clues. Also provide pens because it's too difficult to see pencil writing in the dark room.
3. Need better sound system you can't hear what 1/2 of the people are saying. The background music and people talking makes it very difficult to hear. However, with that said people screaming into the microphone was also unpleasant. A better sound system would fix all this.
4. Mediocre acting and costumes---performers need to practice more and play their roles much better. The costumes are very cheap and ridiculous.
**If you come to this show DON'T DRESS UP like they say in the e-mail. More than 1/2 of the audience wore jeans. ***
I love this place! To true speakeasy fashion, you have to give the password to be let in. Look for the large red key light, that's the entrance. Once you get inside, you're transported back to the Prohibition era. I just had my birthday celebration here this past weekend it was one of my best birthdays.
I love how all the entire staff is dressed up. Servers are in red flapper dresses with a feather hair piece and the male bartenders have their hats and vest on. The manager Sam was very accommodating and helpful when I called to make reservation and stay connected through email. Although he only had 2 small tables for my party of 15+, on the night they brought additional chairs and tables to ensure everyone had a seat.
The drinks are strong!!!!! Trust me it will hit you. Order a drink from Anna behind the bar. The food here is reasonably price and came out pretty quick. All my friends loved the interior, the vibe, and the crowd. We all want to come back and maybe check out the Murder Mystery dinner. Â It's spacey and not too crowded. However if you want to sit down at a table (ladies take note if you're wearing heels) esp on a Saturday night, you need to make a reservations. Most of the tables are reserved.
I love themed parties, and this place is the closest you can get to a theme party without actually going to one. Â A gentleman with top hat, white gloves, and cocktail jacket will greet you at the door and walk you inside to join your party. Â The cocktail waitresses have cute flapper dresses. Â They play old-timey movies inside and serve up some yummy old fashioned cocktails (moscow mule and whiskey sour were divine). Â
We came here for dinner on a friday evening.  The 10 of us got hooked up with a large awesome corner table around 7pm, and enjoyed happy hour until 8pm.  By time we left around 11, the scene was really pickin up and the crowds were starting to arrive en masse. The DJ started his set around 9-10ish.  Glad we got there early and had a table for the whole night  :) The food was pretty good too- we shared pizzas, sliders, sweet potato fries, kale salad.  Overall, we had a flappin good ol' time!
My favorite part about this place is the nice gentleman in front greeting you with a top hat. Â Classy! Â When's the last time you went to a lounge and the person greeting you at the door to check your ID is NOT a beefy big 250 lb 6ft tall black man?
I don't get the password thing though... Â why do you need one? Â I guess for gimmicks... Â have they ever turned people away for it?
The bar selection is excellent! Â and the food is great. Â ambiance is dark and old speak easy style. Â All the employees are dressed in that era's outfit. Â Plus live piano and/or live band. Â One of my favorite places to hang out, have few drinks, snacks and desserts. Â Don't think they have a full dinner menu here though... it's not a restaurant, it's a lounge.
They have valet parking, other wise parking kinda sucks in the area, well, cuz it's hollywood... it's to be expected.
This play was pretty cool, I really liked the music they played even though it was more like 2013 music than 1920 so they could improve on that front!
By no means was it a low key lounge, it was super loud and besides the door man and the flapper-esk servers and the classic movies on the screen wall there was really nothing old school about it.
They have a large selection of beers and it is def nice to dress up for a bar. It's dark, valet is relatively inexpensive and it's a very nice place to go with a larger group, but make sure to make reservations!
Great place for a birthday celebration! Friends trickled in at various times and didn't have any issues at the door. We gave the password at the door and then was lead to our table and seating area. We had one of the sections against the wall that sat about 10-12ish. Our waitress came by frequently to make sure we were good on the drinks. For snacks, I liked all the food we got and would get them all again - sweet potato fries, kale pizza, fried shrimp.
Sam and Ferris were great over email when we were making reservations. Thank you again for a fantastic time at Next Door Lounge!
We came here for a friend's birthday. Valet parking was $6.
We were greeted by a doorman dressed in a 1920s attire. My friend whispered him the password and we were shown to our table. It was a high top table but I think the couches were reserved for bigger parties. Dark, cozy, with a 1920s decor and atmosphere.
The waitress dressed in a flappers outfit gave us complimentary pretzel sticks and veggie sticks (cucumber and carrots with a hint of salt). Those were addicting! We ordered a cocktail off the menu (I forgot the name) that was sweet and had a strawberry flavor to it; so good! Then we ordered the shrimp ceviche, spinach and goat cheese flatbread (OMG delicious), sweet potato fries with it's addicting curry ketchup ($5), and cheesecake for the birthday girl! I just wish that everything came in a bigger portion! Haha!
Overall, it was a nice hangout. The DJ played some oldies but goodies.
I celebrated my birthday here last Saturday and had an awesome time! The place is not situated in the busy Hollywood area, easy parking (free if you can find one in the neighborhood), and no cover charge. I made reservations with the manager about three weeks in advance and the response time and friendliness in his emails were superb!
There was plenty of space and seating for my group of 30 and we all LOVED the 1920s themed atmosphere -- vintage movies playing on the projector, great music, and very tasty specialty drinks. My favorite drinks was their Debutante and Moscow Mule.
My friends loved the idea of saying the secret password at the door and having the doorman escort you to our reservation area. The food was excellent too. I ordered the coconut shrimp, chicken skewers, and sweet potato fries.
I highly recommend this place for your next celebration.
I love this place.....Situated next to the popular Hollywood Corner restaurant, speakeasy Next Door Lounge can usually be spotted by its distinguished gentleman host, whose white-gloved hand runs down reservation lists and checks passwords (required to get in), and ushers guests in through expansive double doors.
We arrived at 11 pm on Saturday night and the place was packed. We took a cab but they do offer Valet parking.
Once inside the 1920s theme extends to the cocktail waitresses, too, all decked out in red flapper dresses, their fringes swaying as they make rounds through patrons playing swing kids to the hip tracks from the house DJ also prohibition-era silent films play on the big screen. Amazing interior and extremely knowledgeable mixologists with super friendly table service.
Locating another great bar is always good news, and Next Door Lounge is no exception.
Supposedly a speakeasy, but I came on a Saturday night and it was cracking. Really crowded, really hip place to go right now. There's an amazing doorman (I hesitate to call him bouncer) who looks and dresses and might actually be from the 20s. You don't need to dress like Prohibition though. He requires a password of the party you're trying to join.
Once inside, the waitresses are all dressed like vampy flappers and the cocktails are really good and not extremely high-priced. Â I'd like to come back during the week when it is less crowded, and during happy hour to try the bar food which sounds amazing.
This place was funky in the greatest of ways. Â I forgot I was in LA for a moment!
In town for less than 24 hours, we were a little tired after seeing the sights all day. Â Didn't want to deal with LA nightlife but wanted to end the day with a nightcap. Â Checked Yelp & boom - Next Door Lounge.
Arrived around 10pm. Â Walked up to the gentleman at the outside podium. Â He was in a tophat and tuxedo. Â I immediately thought, "We're underdressed." Â But we pressed on anyway. Â He asked if we had reservations. Â No. Â I thought, "Crap, we might as we head back to the hotel." Â He asked us to wait as he checked the availability inside (seemingly through a walkie talkie in his coat). Â A few seconds passed and we were granted (free) admission inside.
If I'm gonna be in Hollywood, I expect to have an amazing experience. Â I'd had one earlier in the day (Katy Perry - story for another review) so my quota was filled. Â But honey, when I stepped through the door of Next Door Lounge? Â Well, quite simply, I was amazed!
It felt like a happy place. Â Like nobody there was not having a good time. Â Like everybody in the building was hanging out, completely relaxed and having a good time. Â No dancing. Â No DJ. Â No outrageous prices even with a menu of craft cocktails (LOW for LA & even Miami!). Â Just a dimmed room that looks like what I imagine a Southern parlour used to in the old days. Â There was a bar and lots & lots of intimate seating options for people to simply enjoy each others company. Â We settled into an area and were quickly greeted by a server. Â Our drinks came quickly and our server was always around, even changing out drinks with no attitude whatsoever. Â She even gave us all separate checks with (again) no attitude.
The only thing I would have changed about my time at Next Door Lounge was to have had more time to spend at Next Door Lounge. Â Highly recommend as a spot for drinks and hanging out with friends. Â Next time I'm in LA, they'll definitely be on my list of stops!
I don't always drink alcohol, but when I do I'll take a Pepcid AC (and ask for less alcohol in my drink).
Summary: Its a great place to hang out with a small or large group, but I did go on a Wednesday evening so it may be "bumpin'" on other nights.
Parking:
Valet or in the neighborhood that was free, but read the signs in case there are time constraints.
Decor:
1920's decor, dark wood detail bar, and almost all employees have a period inspired uniform on.
Music:
During my visit there was a guitarist singing. He was so good I didn't realize it was live. He could also make it sound like there was a trumpet playing but its just his lips.
Drinks & Snacks:
$12 The Pimm had ginger beer, mint, cucumber, and some other stuff. I really liked it!
They have $235 dollar "bowls" that you share with around $25 people, but I bet if you and your friends are alcoholics you could finish it, take the challenege! ;)
My friend and I had a plate of pickled cucumbers and carrots and a plate of fried pretzel-like items that went well with our beverages.
I LOVE this place. It has something for everyone!
I always make a reservation here, just to guarantee I get a table. They're really good about it and give you a fun password to say at the door. You can valet or there's usually meter parking on Highland or behind the place in a residential area.
THERE HAPPY HOUR IS MY FAVVVVORIIITE.
$5 for amazing drinks and HUGE appetizers? What more could you ask for? The sliders and pizzas are delicious and big enough to share. We usually get out of there with 3 appetizers and 2 drinks for like $30. It's crazy.
The 20's decor, waitresses in fringe, and the black and white movies playing on the brick wall really give you a fancy feel.
I usually come here for happy hour when it's pretty calm but I can imagine this small room getting crowded on Weekend nights.
I also did a murder mystery dinner night here that was super fun. Check that out if its available. This is a great place to take a date or group of friends for a classy yet cheap evening.
