Overall my favorite bar in the arena district. You can say that it attracts the mature customers, but I've frequented Park St. Tavern for 9 years. So I've definietly acted a fool here.
Things I love about Park St. Tavern. Great bar tenders. I've always had great service here and it topped out at awesome the last time we stopped in for beers. They allowed us to sample drafts at no extra charge and were super helpful. Their prices are reasonable. They have a fun draft selection. They have great live music. The staff said they take a lot of care in choosing the bands they have come in. They don't serve food. It's nice to be somewhere that's JUST a bar.
Things that could be better would include better restroom cleanliness when it starts to get late. More room around the pool tables (that would be impossible). Better juke box selection, and even though I understand why they ask for it, I wish there was no cover.
None of these things stop me from going to park St. Tavern and all the good stuff will keep me coming back.
This bar has some the best craft brew selection I've seen in Cbus. Â They have over 20 craft beers on tap and the best part (in my humble opinion) is the obvious commitment to local, regional and small craft breweries. Â When I was there, they had Bell's, CBC, Founders, 21st Amendment and a litany of other crafty choices. I feel it's my civic duty to try them all. Â I will report back so listen up. Â And you're welcome.
On Wednesdays, they have live band karaoke with the band Dirty Money. Â Now, I'm not usually a karaoke kind of girl but sweet jebus....that was all kind of fun! Â Definitely better than me singing into my hairbrush in my bathroom. Good times and hilarity for all. Â Bring your friends 'cuz it's funny to see them sing...especially when they have a band singing backup and doing the color commentary.
We came here mid-Saturday afternoon, apparently after a hockey game, and it was not a great time. The place was filled to the brim with rowdy, obnoxious 40-something year old dudes, who had obviously been drinking since long before we got there. The music playing over the sound system was on too loudly for anyone in our group to hear one another.
Other noteworthy moments: An employee walked over to the door to prop it open. Since it was 30 degrees outside and we were the closest table to the door, some other genius employee thought it might be worth noting that we might be feeling a little drafty. The guy propping open the door made eye contact with me, shrugged, and walked away, leaving the door wide open in the middle of February. Two women at a table near us decided to arm wrestle, and this was subsequently filmed by a table of creepy middle aged dudes. And then one of the girls fell over.
Not really my scene.
I've had 2 seriously AWFUL experiences here all thanks to the POS employees who work here. Their attitude and serious lack of compassion is disturbing. My first time here wasn't so much to be a customer but to escape the elements. You see, it was February and earlier that night I had been at my first law school prom. Like any sensible girl wearing a dress in dead of winter, I did not have a coat with me. It was 2am, cabs were hard to come by so I retreated to Park St Tavern while a classmate who lived in my apartment building braved the bitter cold to flag us down a cab home. The asinine pricks that work at PST pretty much pushed me out the door to let me freeze. All I wanted to do was stand by the door, but inside. Needless to say I sat on the curb crying and freezing unable to get a cab, as my classmate abandoned me. Through the graces of God I finally got my roommate to answer her phone and her and her boyfriend saved me after I had been outside for a solid 30 minutes. SECOND time around I actually was a patron and again dead of winter outside. It had been through almost 3 years of law school at this point so my negotiating and rationalizing skills had improved, but sadly the employees mentality had not. The employees arbitrarily let their "friends" stay inside the bar after closing but then try to argue with you there are rules or something that after a certain time customers must leave. Ummmmmmmmm ok. Sorry you can't pick and choose enforcement of "rules" because you just look like an idiot. We were staying inside the door because getting a cab was hard work and we didn't want to stand outside in the cold. My theory was, hey let us chill out here for 15-20 minutes until the cabs free up then we'll be on our way. I stood our ground. The see you next tuesday employee threatened us by saying she'd call the cops which had no affect on me and I called her bluff. She ended up successfully hailing us a cab. I killed her with kindness and thanked her for doing so. Seriously worst employees known to mankind.
Review Source:Stumbled in while following the Goose Island beer chicks who lured my friends and I over with the promise of free beer. It wasn't crowded for a Friday night-possibly because it was early (we started early-don't judge)-and we didn't pay a cover charge. Again, because it was early I don't recall any live music there-maybe they were upstairs? I don't know. It kind of dissolves into a free beer/free whiskey shot haze, but I do remember this-it was a very chill bar-not pretentious at all-and I would definately go back.
Review Source:This is another one of my go to places in the Park Street/Arena District area. Â Â It is a no frills bar with live music in the evenings and most of the bands are of a good variety. Â Â If there isn't live music, they do have a jukebox available, however the music selection could be updated. Â
It is a great place to go get a before game drink prior to a Bluejackets game or after work happy hour and is full of down to earth people just wanting to socialize and have a good time. Â Â
The staff is always friendly and takes well care of the patrons, which earns them a little extra tip from me. Â Â They have a wide selection of domestic and imported beers and the bar itself is pretty impressive in design.
To sum it up, Park Street Tavern is a low key, average joe, kick back and relax type of place.....my kind of place.
The shining light of the Park St. stretch - really.
I think the cover charge often acts like garlic to a vampire when fending away drunk and obnoxious college kids and 20-22-somethings, and I'm cool with that.
Live music really makes or breaks a bar and the Tavern consistently delivers on booking great talent. A pretty impressive beer selection (yay for Oberon on tap!) delivers smiles to patrons and the back area entertains with a pool table and some arcade games.
Really, it's just a cool bar in a bizarre location given its neighbors who cater to a vastly different demographic.
Great bar - I know I will always get a drink and not have  some 21 year old birthday girl falling on me, like most of the other locations in this area. Very nice mix of young and old people. Great jazz and jam bands playing nightly. Great place to catch ball games all year round, and one of few bars that will have sound on.  New upstairs has been a great addition.  Hands down my favorite bar in Columbus.
Review Source:I love this bar. Â And if you are like me, into live good music, then would also love this bar too. Â They have a great selection of local and Ohio acts through out the week from Jazz to funk to alternative to Reggae. Â It is by far the best bar in downtown for live music not to mention the ambience isn't too bad either. Â Even thought it's located on the main strip I would consider the Tavern a some what low key bar even though is located, in the heart of the area clubbing district. Â
Most of the frequents at the Tavern are mature working class that are more into about live music and an enjoyable atmosphere, very opposite from your typical  "Arena District" crowd.  It is a very small bar compared to the neighboring bars that consist large crowded over priced bars and clubs.  I would give the Tavern a six star if I could.
What kind of girl do I think I are? The kind you meet in a bar?
I generally do not dig the whole park street scene with the exception of this authentic little tavern. Although they charge a cover it is worth it, I've never been let down by the bands, which is usually a blend of blues and funk.
What I love most about PST is the crowd. I have no problem with the tight in door seating because I always meet very genuine and down to earth people just looking to enjoy some music and brew.
I take friends here that are visiting from out of town and we always have a memorable experience. The proximity of the band to the bar seating makes for some interesting interactions between the two.
If you are not into the music play some pool or stop in to soak up the alcohol with some popcorn.
Good times.
I very much adore this place, but I hate always having to pay a cover. Â I do understand that the money is covering the live band, which is why I go, but I wonder if the bar could give a cut? Â I have no idea of the workings of bar entertainment, but just a little thought from a loving patron. Â (P.S. Â There is no cover on Tuesday and Wednesday nights). Â
The bartenders are always friendly and attentive AND quite good at making drinks. Â The crowd is young, and hip, but not all over themselves. Â If I were to meet a guy at a bar, this is one that I would like it to be.
I love this bar for being...well, a bar and a mighty fine one at that. As a plus they have great live music every Thurs-Sat night for you to dance to. Nice covers of 70's funk (I would check their schedule, sometimes they swap out for Karaoke). While the beer is great, the people are great, and the music is great, the dance space does not promote huge groups from cutting rug. Usually people stand and watch or nod their heads. If you are a crew that don't mind being the center of the attention, then this is a shakedown spot for you.
Added bonus, free popcorn all night long
I love this bar. It is casual dress, price and people. Its night and day from the air or superiority and desperation wafting from the Park Street bars next door.
Park Street is pretty simple. Pool table, cover band, patio. In good condition now but will mature into an excellent dive bar for the generation to come. Gets pretty busy on the weekends and late week. The bartenders are nice and quick with drinks. The live music can be pretty live and loud at times. Nice if you are finishing off the night and are past the point of lucid conversation.
The patio is small and well thought out with heat lamps. It is far enough away from the live band to provide volume for conversation. Park Street has a Kevin Bacon aspect to it as you will always know someone (however vaguely) there.
My all time favorite Park Street perk is the ladies bathroom. Somehow this tavern-y bar boasts a bathroom themed out to Sex in the City. Seriously. Quotes from the show and painting of high heels and purses are stenciled on the bathroom wall. Bizarre, but appreciated.
Personal pet peeve in the doorman. I used to go there quite a bit and he never remembered me. Whatever.
Moving right along, Park Street is a fun bar to enjoy. Play some pool, dance to the band, and check out Mr. Big insights upon the ladies room wall.
From the looks of things, this has to be one of the oldest bars in this up-and-coming entertainment district on the fringe of downtown Columbus. If the crowd here is any indicator, Park Street Tavern may as well have been around since the turn of the century. The floors and support beams lend to a creaky and almost dive-y feel at times, but other than that I'd say that this is a pretty nice place. It's casual and has a lived-in feel to it, which would certainly explain the preponderance of middle-aged couples that clearly paid a baby sitter a night's worth of wages so they could get drunk on red wine and dance the night away to whatever band is playing live that evening.
Fortunately for youngsters like me, it's pretty hard to feel left out of the action here. Unlike most of the other bars that make up this bustling nightlife district, the crowd here is as friendly as they come. There's not one specific group of people you'd find here in larger numbers than another, which means that it's anyone's game here on a weekend night. The live music here is generally comprised of cover bands that crank out the hits your parents used to rock out when they drove you around town in your youth, so it's hard not to feel at least a small bit of nostalgia while some drunk guy from Dublin and his bleach-blond wife make fools of themselves to "Play That Funky Music, Whiteboy" in front of god knows how many people. Chances are they're someones parents, and they don't get to do this too often. Might as well join them while you can, right?
Other than the live music, everything else about Park Street is fairly standard. The bad has popular post-college drinks like Stella and Blue Moon on tap, there's a cramped patio out back filled with smokers, and the bathrooms are so-so. This isn't my favorite bar in town, but it's certainly one of the best that the Arena District has to offer.
