Axis Nightclub

This is after a long night of walking up and down the street.  So I might be a little blurred as to my review here.  What I can say is that I had an awesome time here.

We decided because of the line outside of this place earlier in the night we would attempt to stop in on our way back.  Good thing we did.  When we came back, it wasn't that long of a wait to get in.  I remember a cover, but not how much the cover was.

When we did enter the place, it was packed.  Packed so full that it was hard to find a place to stand and enjoy your drink.  But with the music blaring, you really didn't want to stand for too long.

If I remember correctly, this place is a bit of a maze to navigate.  Imagine if you will that you are in a Scooby Doo cartoon and each time you enter/exit a door you end up in a different area.  Albeit confusing, it was fun (but not so much when you're tipsy).

I would definitely come back here if I visit Columbus again.

In the name of all that is danceclub, Axis is just okay.  Every now and then a beautiful man will dance his way into and out of your life for one evening, at a particularly low cost if you arrive on a college-ID night, but 95% of the time it's littered with creepers (fortunately, the lighting is very dim).  I would have given it two stars, but they recently did some remodeling and expanded their first floor, which was much to my liking.  Generally the music is generic top 40 remix, with occasional 90s one-hit wonders, like Snap! and Technotronic, thrown in.  Nothing to write home about, but the drag queens can make for an entertaining evening nonetheless.

Like any nightclub, Axis is never without its shady characters.  Iknew someone who got roofied and raped after a night out here.  It all just comes back to making wise decisions.

Having come out in my late teens, in an astute yet very malleable point in time of my life, I have fond memories of places like Axis.  Yet, on most occasions, it just fills me with ennui.  To quote Morrissey,

"You stand on your own
and you leave on your own
and you go home and you cry
and you want to die."

Axis is fine, and the only gay dance bar in the Short North. The location of the bar is in the relation to the dance floor is odd--it's right in the middle, which breaks the space up in a way that sometimes bottlenecks the areas on the side. The drinks are small and overpriced, given how cheap alcohol is in Columbus in general. The drag shows and strip reviews save the venue from being totally skippable, but in general it's not very impressive. You're better off chatting it up at Union or Level.
