Wandered in on a week night to catch a quick drink with a date and was pleasantly surprized to find good food, a decent later happy hour, and my favorite dry cider on tap, for only $4/pint. Great mixed drinks too, (I took a sip of his). This is why I love wandering Ballard. Â My neighborhood is still a good mix of dives and genuine music spots between the yuppie upscale places.
I'd already eaten but had a few fries and I'm in love! I'll be back for sure. The table service was fantastic, I didn't have to lift a finger all evening, even though it was a full house. I can't wait to try some authentic German food, it looked and smelled great.
This place is one of my favorites in Ballard. The staff are very nice, the customers give you space if you like, but if you strike up a conversation they will never act passive or snoty. The food is delish, especially the reuben and the german potato salad. If you want a great german beer, good company and stellar food, this is the spot- and kids are welcome in the front room.
Review Source:The ideal spot for a drunken nibble when street meat just won't suffice.
The fried pickles arrived and stayed somewhere around the temperature of hot lava. Â The fact that I couldn't wait for them to cool down before devouring them is testament to just how delicious they were. Â The pretzel was noteworthy as well - pay the extra $1 for the cheese sauce and you won't regret it.
Our waitress had a surly vibe about her was but perfectly delightful and offered excellent service whenever we were able to flag her down.
Was here for the first time on Saturday afternoon, for happy hour. My bf has been many times, and loves the happy hour bratwurst + side special. Their happy hour menu really is great. The last time I had fried pickles was in Mississippi in 2001, and PP's fried pickles definitely did not disappoint. Instead of frying up pickle slices, they do entire spears. You get 6, I think, for $4. I also tried the meat & cheese platter, which was pretty good for $6 or $6.50. House wine is only $2 during happy hour - I tried the red, and it was surprisingly drinkable for the price.
What I wasn't bowled over by was the service. We sat in the back bar area at a table, because there weren't 2 seats together up at the bar. I think there were 2 waitresses, plus the bartender. We were not acknowledged by anyone for probably about 15 minutes, during which time one of the waitresses lazily bussed tables around us. She was definitely a waitress, not just a busser - I saw her taking orders. I finally got up and ordered from the bar. After I had already placed our order at the bar, a different waitress came to our table and asked if we had been helped. I said, "No, so we ordered from the bar." She apologized. The bartender was taking care of us, but while we were eating, I guess his shift ended, because we saw him sitting at the bar, drinking. He didn't mention that his shift was ending or ask us to tab out...so now no one was taking care of us. We were able to flag down the apologetic waitress to get our check. At that point they had gotten quite busy, and that waitress was the only one on duty in the whole place. The other waitress had taken over behind the bar. Seemed understaffed for 5-5:30 on a Saturday. The apologetic waitress said someone else was arriving to help her in a couple of hours. She really was nice, and we tipped her well. Just didn't understand why the waitress who had been taking care of our section when we arrived never acknowledged us, or why the bartender didn't give us the heads up that his shift was ending and an option to tab out.
Also of note: this is a Virginia Tech bar, so seeing all the people in VT jerseys felt just like being at home to this Virginia girl. Nice to see in Seattle!
Beer. Â Cozy neighborhood vibe. Â Fried pickles. Â If these resonate at all with you, you've come to the right place.
Dunno what it is about the People's Pub, but once you make your way to the back, it's like none of the Ballard reinvention is happening around you. Â If I had to guess, it's the dumpy (but family friendly) little seating area in the front you have to get through first.
But the bar in back is where it's at. Â It's casual, it's friendly, and it's very rarely crowded to the point of discomfort. Â There's a tap selection for any taste, the drinks are always satisfying and the food is rib-sticking good at very reasonable prices. Â They bill themselves as a German Pub, but I'd say it's more like a northwest watering hole with German flair.
It's the kind of place that tends to make me wish I were still at a place in my life that I had a regular bar. Â For me, that time is past, but if you're a Ballardite looking for a place to call your home away from home, you might very well find it in the back of the People's Pub.
Deep fried pickles. I am in love. Utterly in love. I have never had deep fried pickles until I came here, and I am now obsessed. Their creamy aioli that comes with the pickles, mm, to die for! Nothing tastes greasy. Just a delicious pickle with a yummy crunch and a creamy sauce. I wish I didn't have to share them, but I did, haha.
I came here on a Friday evening for a quick happy hour/meeting. We enter and there's not many bodies here, but boy is it hard to find parking in Ballard around this time. We park, walk in, and walk to the back where there are cozy tables, for big parties and small, and are greeted. A few friends get hard ciders while I chill with water. We order some hand made chips with their bbq sourcream, a round of fries and pickles. Too bad I was too full to order food because yes, I've heard the sausages were delicious. That means I just have back again! ;)
Overall, I think we had a great experience. The chips were crunchy, delicious, and the sourcream was amazing. Who knew it'd be so darn yummy I wanted to lick it all? The fries were fresh and cheap too! Their happy hour menu consists of cheap beer (foreign and domestic), daily drink specials, and wine. I love how there are so many eclectic groups of people here. Our server was fairly nice. It's pretty chill here, and sometimes can get a bit loud. Try their pickles. I can't get over them!
Only been here twice - once with the kids and once with friends. Â Bothy times were really good. Â Service is great, friendly, welcoming. Â While I don't go for fried food that much, the deep fried pickles were really good - crisp, not greasy. Â If they keep this up, I'll have to give them 5 stars soon.
Review Source:It's been a while since we tried the People's Pub and we had a craving for schnitzel (you know how that is). We went on a monday night, and the place was nice and quiet. Some decent music in the background and a few folks at the bar. The service was good (they have a tough time when it's crowded), and it turns out that happy hour is until 7pm which is extremely civilized. There are excellent happy hour food specials...but once we looked at the regular menu, we had to have the wienerschnitzel (if I spelled that right), beet salad and a brat, and it was all really well prepared and tasty. The schnitzel was juicy, and the cabbage with it was delicious. The mushroom pan gravy is excellent with the fries. It was so much better than the prior times we had been there I wondered if it was a new chef, or maybe just the slower pace of mondays that gave them a chance to be great.
We will definitely be back.
Been here a few times now for HH. Â Have always been completely satisfied.
It is definitely a comfortable, welcoming environment. Â It has never been overly crowded when I've been and I have found it to be a great place to just kick back and relax after a long day.
They serve up decent food at better-than-decent prices. Â We can't seem to stop in here without getting some fried pickles. Â And, I love that, at HH, I can get a full size sandwich and fries for $5.50. Â HH prices on wine give me plenty of motivation to induge in a second glass.
There is a lovely view from the large behind-the-bar window; if the time of day and atmospheric conditions converge, you get a spectacular, colorful show as the sun goes down. Â The staff here have always been friendly and have always provided prompt service. Â
We'll definitely be back...
New to Yelp but I've been convinced by others that it is important to give positive reviews to places you like so here goes.  The People's Pub is the kind of place you can go to by yourself or with a mob of friends and you are treated exactly the same.  Every time I've been to this bar the servers and bartenders have always made every effort to treat me well.  I like the food but I'm there for the beer; the Reissdorf Kölsch
and Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse are my favs and it brings a joy into my heart to enjoy them while also taking part in their awesome happy hour items. Â I've made it a new tradition to come here after my last day of working out for the week. Â Never disappoints, great bar!
Maybe I'm just a little pickier than most about German food (I'm from Bavaria), but I generally just come to the People's Pub for drinks/ happy hour. Â It's hard to find good German biers in and around Seattle, especially on tap. Â When I'm craving Spaten, this is the place to come (doesn't hurt that it's within walking distance from work...right?)
But their German food could use a touch of German... The schnitzels tend to run on the greasy side and the gravies are generally pretty bland. No real heat in the Paprikaschnitzel, etc. Â The closest to traditional-tasting I came was with the beet salad. Â Walnuts + goat cheese = tasty!
The appetizers and happy hour are all decent. Â BUT I want to smack people who order dipping sauces for their pretzels, but then again, the pretzels aren't exactly the same as the brezeln back home, so I guess it's a forgiveable offense. Â :)
I'd give the food 2-stars overall, and the bier selection 4-stars.
I am so in love with the People's Pub! They have great vegan food, which is definitely surprising for a German-themed place! The pretzels are great, I love the mustard choices, the German potato salad is delicious, and the Field Roast sunflower cutlet is great, too.
Happy hour goes until 7:00, and the prices are really good!
Another favorite place of mine for happy hour (everyday from 3-7)
It's a shame that I don't like beer. This place has a good selection of beers, so I've been told.
My bf and I always go there during their happy hour to get food, and in my bf's case, beers too. I always get their chicken burger with fries ($5.50). My bf gets pulled pork sandwich with potato salad ($6). We sometimes get a garlic pretzel ($5) to share as well. Their pretzels are so GOOD! I can probably eat 5 of those in one sitting.
Good food. Good quality. Too bad they are not in Northgate, otherwise I'd be their regular!!!
The People's Pub is one of my favorite bars in the city. Although they don't have a huge beer selection or pitchers (bah!), they make up for it with great happy hour pricing and incredibly friendly staff (if occasionally ornery -- they just need time to warm up). It's one of those places that pulls in a bizarre assortment of people (sometimes even families with small kids), but seems to cater to them all.
Food-wise, everything's pretty good, maybe a little greasy, and nothing is mind-blowing. The sunflower cutlet is a personal favorite if I'm in the mood for a meal, otherwise it's time for a German pretzel (with cheese sauce, preferably) or some spatzle. The one thing I didn't care for was the fried pickles -- way too soggy for my taste.
They have a decent selection of German beers and a few local beers, as well as a full bar. I'd recommend this place for happy hour (traditional or late) or for gathering with a big group, since they have plenty of large tables and games that you can borrow. People's Pub is basically a perfect backup if you're on Ballard and can't settle on something else.
Only major complaint: the bathrooms are totally cramped and pretty gross. Not a big enough problem to stop me going back, of course.
The little German girl in me screamed. Wait. I have a little German girl in me? MAYBE!!!
The fried pickles have turned me. I was all like, "F*&% MY LOW CARB DIET. I WILL SHOVE THESE PICKLES IN MY MOUTH."
And it was written. No regrets.
ACE CIDER has also become one of my favorite boozes.
I went here last week with a couple friends. Happy hour goes til 7pm which is why we decided to try this place out! Also, the menu looked promising.
Good food, good beer, casual (read "dive") atmosphere and service was just okay. Nothing better than okay.
The prices on pints during happy hour is good ($3.25) and prices on food are pretty good, too. I had the bratwurst with salad ($6, good price for the food) a soft pretzel with cheese ($5) and a Spaten Pilsner beer. Other items on the happy hour menu for $5-6 are fish and chips, pork sandwich, a variety of bratwursts, and fried pickles to name a few.
The brat was tasty with good mustard and flavorful sauerkraut. There was a small piece of folded french bread served on the side that was enough bread to accompany about 1/3 of the brat. A little weird. Still good though, I would order it again for sure. Great sauerkraut on the side.
Soft pretzel was good but they are not kidding around with the salt! I picked a lot off because it was covered with salt. Very good though, pretzel comes in a few different varieties with dipping sauce. The cheese sauce is a white cheddar sauce which was fine. Not your typical food-colored nacho cheese!
Price came to $17-18 for the brat, side salad, pretzel, and 2 beers before tax and tip. Pretty reasonable for the happy hour! Prices seem a little high non-happy hour time though.
I was a little put off by our server who got a little huffy with us when we asked to split our bill. Just tell us you'd prefer us not to and that's fine but please don't be rude about it!
I'll go again because the food was very good. The beer selection actually doesn't have that many German offerings considering it's a German pub. I'd like to try the schnitzel!
Less dive bar and more Seattle style medium wood minimalism + a mixed bag crowd of young Ballard and old regulars and fans. Never entered after passing a billion times until one night after La Carta. The front looks like a relatives outdated multipurpose kitchen, and the back a small cozy intimate good beers bar- we headed straight to the back and parked at a 2 top. We were lured in by promises of German beer and German food, and we found the beer we were looking for. Regretful to have bitten the bullet on trying this place out now... too late!
FYI's~
* Deep fried pickles
* Small/limited menu- seemed to be a few tempting things?
* A FEW German beers and good local/less common taps- not a German goldmine but better options than most
* Happy hour
I would rather be kicked in the head than eat here again.
I could go have a root canal, fight through a zombie invasion, talk to pink elephants as I come out of sedation, and all the while still cook better than these people.
That's just sad.
I didn't blame the server. Â She couldn't do anything about it and I didn't want to trouble her with the obvious problems with the tough and cluelessly prepared food.
There is something about really expensive badly made food that, when coupled with beer and when I'm really hungry, is almost like an honor duel to eat. Â I SHALL HAVE MY SATISFACTION, SIR!
They have ok German beer here, but skip the dinner menu. Â You'll only be made sad.
One particular aspect that shows the sadness and fail of the kitchen most specifically is the red cabbage; the worst I've ever had ever anywhere on earth.
We went, we drank, we bs'ed, we went next door to the Sunset and rocked... it was a good night.
I loved the bartender/server in the bar, he was AWWWWWESOOME. Â He made me a delicious pear brandy something that I thoroughly enjoyed and I always get a tiny crush on any bar employee who just makes me 'something yummy' instead of making me think about what I actually want.... am I lazy? Perhaps. But maybe I just like surprises, especially those involving alcohol.
The staff were totally nice about us having a gazillion people who all had ridiculously complicated needs regarding food, drinks, bill splitting and such and no complaints did I hear. We sat in the back, it had a nice view and a laid back vibe.
I ordered only the spaetzle, I do like German food but for me, it was not what I wanted that night, but the spaetzle was good, if a bit bland. Â I looked at other people's food, it looked delicious, and the portions were 'healthy'...as in what you call a girl who is not thin but not too heavy... 'healthy' Â This in no way insinuates that the food is good for you, I can't imagine it is, being fried and basted and topped with gravy.
When I am in the mood for German food, I will go back and eat properly and update, until then, Â I say the rest of it gets a HIGH FIVE!
I am updating my review due the following:
1. Last night our table of 7 had amazing service. She was so nice, friendly, checked on us often, etc.
2. Pretzel... with cheese sauce. When pretzel was gone, I was eating cheese sauce with a fork. It was that delicious.
People's Pub, you did me no wrong last night. Next time I will bring Matt and share with him how special you really are.
xoxoxo
Boy, is this place ever misleading. Â Unassuming dive bar on the outside leads to eclectic German pub on the inside.
I read a friend's review and was astounded to discover this place was a German place. Â WHERE DOES IT SAY THAT? Â So the boyfriend and I high-tailed it out there, smack in the center of happy hour on a FRIDAY. Â Talk about bravery (or stupidity).
This place was crazy-packed but we snagged a table up front. Â It took awhile for our server to make his way over to us, but we're both super forgiving when it comes to the Friday evening rush. Â We ordered our beers, the deep fried pickles, the brined bratwurst (for me) and the Rinderrouladen (for him). Â We were warned up front that the wait on the food might be around 25 minutes but that they'd get the pickles and beer out to us long before that. Â We were fine with that...it's a Friday night! Â We've got nowhere to go.
We've had deep fried pickles before but they've got NOTHING on these - less greasy, less fried-skin, a better crunch to the pickles and more briney tang...SO good. Â They came with some sort of sauce that tasted garlic-y. Â They were PERFECT with our beer.
The brined bratwurst was amazing - just a bit of bite, a beautiful carmelization...the brat was very smooth. Â We were both misled into thinking it came out as a sandwich (like we, two seasoned Oktoberfest fanatics, are used to) but it actually came out de-constructed - toasted french bread on the side of the dressed salad on the side of the (per my choice) potato salad (which was AMAZING, you are doing yourself a disservice by NOT ordering this) on the side of the brat which was next to a pile of very fresh, crispy saurkraut which was next to a little dish of a really good mustard.
It was truly a thing of beauty.
We'd made bets on what we thought the rinderrouladen would be like and we were wrong. Â We'd assumed the beef rolls were closer to a breaded roll with beef inside. Â Instead, it was literally flat pieces of steak rolled up around a mixture of mustard, pickles, bacon, and onions and it was SO GOOD. Â SOOOO GOOD. Â The mashed potatoes were to die for.
Even better, when we got our bill we found out that the pickles had been on happy hour!
This is YET ANOTHER place in Ballard that makes me want to move out there. Â OH MAN, we're coming back and we're bringing friends and family.
Note: it gets drafty up at the front, what with all the people coming and going (coming to see if there's a table available, going when they realize that there isn't a chance on earth they're getting in anytime in the near future), so be prepared. Â This'll probably be nice in the warmer months, but during the winter? Â Brrrr... Â :)
An unassuming pub in Ballard that offers solid bar food + tasty German fare until last call. Â They recommend that you call ahead to ensure the kitchen is still open. Â We've never had a problem ordering food but we've never gone after midnight. Â They have two happy hours: Â 3 - 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. until close. Â Kids are allowed in the front room until 10 p.m. with management's request that 21+ in the back area only. Â And there are board games and a juke box in the front room.
They offer daily specials:
Monday is Whiskey Night with $1.00 off Jameson, Crown Royal + Makers.
Tuesday is Small Batch Bourbon with $1.00 off Knob Creek, Bulleit Frontier, Basil Haydens, Woodford Reserve + Booker Noe's.
Wednesday is German Night with $1.00 off German bottled beer + German food entrees with $3.00 German draft pints.
Thursday: Â $4.00 Cosmopolitans + Margaritas.
Friday: Â $4.00 sour drinks.
Saturday: Â $4.00 Jagermeister + Schnapps.
Sunday: Â $1.50 Off Entire Single Malt Scotch Collection.
We had one incident of poor customer service but I haven't seen that employee since. Â The bathrooms have been clean and the drinks good. Â The reason we keep coming back is the food - it's not overpriced nor greasy and hits the spot perfectly. Â
And yes, try the fried pickles... I was hesitant at first but after my first bite, admitted to my companion that another order would not go uneaten at our table.
If for no other reason, go to People's Pub to eat their fried pickles. Â They sound so wrong, but they taste so, so, sooo right. Â The rest of the menu isn't so bad either, but maybe a tad over priced. Â Their drafts range from obscure German beers to PBR ($2 bucks for a pint). Â
The servers and bartenders are friendly and attentive. Â I once sat at the bar for 30 minutes while waiting for my friend to show and both a server and a bartender introduced themselves and chatted with me in their free time. Â Way to make a girl feel welcome, I dig it.
While even the "divey" places along Ballard Ave. may be filled to the brim, People's always seems to have an open table waiting just for you.
Happy Hour goes until 7pm!
Why is that first? Well, because that's the reason I went. I had a light breakfast/lunch and managed to find myself hungry, drunk, and in this part of Ballard at 6:11pm. (It's hard to say no to delicious free drinks?)
Sadly the time meant that HH at the place I was headed to (Root Table) was over, so I came to The People's Pub.
The waitress was nice and good with me. I think I was acting a bit odd/drunk, but apparently my "drunk" doesn't really look like drunk to people. Good thing I'm not one of those people that will say "I'm fine" and go drive somewhere?
In any case she said it was fine to get HH food without ordering any booze. I got the fish & chips and was happy to pay about $6 for them instead of whatever the non-HH-time price is. The fries were decent, the two pieces of fish were on the smaller side but delicious, and the tartar sauce was very flavorful. I was hungry and happily finished the whole thing. Happy to feel full, happy to feel not-so-drunk.
I have to come back here with friends next time and get some of those fried pickles that I've been meaning to try for months. I wonder if the food will taste as good in a different state of mind?
Now we're talking! This is a great place to grab a damn tasty burger with fresh, hot fries for $5.50 during happy hour. Also the grilled cheese (I like mine with bacon and tomatoes) with tomato soup happy hour combo is way affordable. Last week they had a badass german onion soup (similar to french onion but with beer and apples as well) that I simply couldn't get enough of.
The employees are unpretentious, clever, and highly interesting. I'm so glad a lot of people pass by here and keep it untainted. Yes, you walk by Whitey McWhiterson and wait an hour to have an overrated pixie size taco next door. I'll be in the comfort of the People's Pub noshing on excellent soups and sammies while having an indepth conversation about zombies.
This place is a pretty comfortable, fun hangout. Â It's not fantastic, but it's solid. Â The back bar is pretty cozy, which is nice. Â Plus, there are board games. Â That's always a bonus.
The food takes forEVER to arrive, but the wait staff is generally nice and apologetic about it. Â Our waitress was insanely busy (and very slow), but she always tried to check in on us when she could. Â
Food is expensive if you're not there for happy hour, but happy hour runs until 7 every day, so if you specifically want food, there's plenty of time to make it there after work.
Ich liebe German Food.
Ich liebe German bier.
Ich liebe People's Pub!
Their Spaetzle is great! Their weinerschnitzel is better! Sunday, a group of us went for dinner and I had these pork croquettes w/ some rotkohl on it - it was awesome!! If you want some good German food and great atmosphere, this is a great place to go! And it doesn't smell like sauerkraut either! :o)
Oooo... and they have board games too!
So, I was flipping through a past issue of my Virginia Tech alumni newsletter, when I noticed an article about places where Hokies can go to gather with fellow alumni across the country. Â Well, low and behold, the People's Pub in Ballard was listed for Seattle. Â Needless to say, I had to check it out.
I enjoyed it. Â The German fair was sehr gut. Â It was happy hour when I arrived, and they have a special happy hour menu with many reasonably priced food and drink specials. Â I ordered a Bratwurst with Frites and an order of deep fried pickles for the table. Â The pickles were strange(part of the reason why I ordered them in the first place) but good. Â The Bratwurst was delicious, reminded me of Grandma Kerr's kielbasa when I was a kid.
The visit was short lived, but I think I want to go back another time, maybe for a Virginia Tech football game to try out their huge selection of imported German beers. Â The TV in the bar is kind of small, so maybe I'll just get my order to go and head back to my place, we'll see. Â I hear the atmosphere here is the real draw.
All in all, the People's Pub gets a big thumbs up from me, and for representing Virginia Tech, it gets an even bigger Hokie Hokie Hokie Hi!
Their wurst is the best! Â If you know what I'm sayin'?!
Yikes. Â I used to love this place. Â The wide variety of German beers available, the deep fried pickles (one star is just for the pickles), the wonderfully decadent Bavarian cuisine....it should have been one of my favorite places.
Unfortunately, I have seen enough. Â The past few times I've gone, it's been packed to the gills. Â Great for them, not great for a group of people looking for a nice place to drink off the Ballard art walk. Â No hostess in sight, you're left to find a place for yourself, and on the off chance that you actually do, good luck flagging down a server to take your order. Â The table most definitely won't be clean in any case, and make sure you wipe down your chair before sitting on it. Â Dark beer stains.
One fateful night, my party of about 7 people and I did just what I've described. Â We found a table in the front section, bussed it ourselves, and wiped down the spilled beer and grease from the table top with paper towels I grabbed from the bathroom. Â We'd waited 10 minutes for someone who worked there to do it, but to no avail. Â Finally a waitress arrived at the table, looking perturbed, and took our drink orders. Â I asked for a late night food menu as well, which she sighed heavily at, and flatly refused to split our check. Â
15 minutes later, about half of the beers arrive. Â No food menu.
Another 15 minutes later, another waitress comes by with a food menu (no signs of our other beers) and pours water for everyone at the table. Â Except me. Â She proceeds to pour about half a glass of water into my lap, says "oops," and walks away without an apology or an offer of a towel.
Another 15 minutes later and a third waitress comes by to ask for our food orders. Â No original beers.
Yet another 15 minutes gone and the first waitress comes by to ask if we need anything else, and we request our originally shorted beers, a towel, and an ETA on our food, plus a couple more drinks.
15 minutes after that, the second waitress comes by with our food, our originally shorted beers, and our check. Â It's last call.
By this time, I'm so shocked at the service I'm ready to leave, but I eat my pickles in disbelieving silence, drain my 20 oz. Spaten Optimator, and pay for our tab.
The third waitress comes back with our second round and pours water into my lap as she's refilling our glasses and takes our payment.
This was the single worst service experience I have EVER had. Â I tried to be patient and understanding. Â Yes, the bar is always full of Ballard rowdies and drama club retirees. Â Sure, it can be stressful. Â Many of my best friends are in the restaurant and bar business and I know how hard it can be, and why you should tip well. Â Still, they had to either be mildly brain damaged or outwardly malicious to have caused such a debacle. Â
That night, I didn't leave a tip, mostly so I could pass one on to unsuspecting patrons: Â if you're looking for a great German pub, don't go to this one. Â You're better off going to Prost!, Feierabend, or die BierStube. Â They may be a little pricier, but at least you won't look like you've wet yourself when you leave.
Went here for the 2nd time yesterday, and I gotta say, this place is awesome. In fact, Rebecca L. and I were about to eat somewhere else, when we realized that we could be here, playing board games, and I had to run down the waitress and tell her to abort beer.
The smallish, but eclectic array of board games is certainly a major draw; where else can a pair of poli sci majors play The Game of Law School? (for the record, I answered FAR more questions correctly, but probation gave the win to Rebecca L. I sense an impending rematch...)
But even if you aren't a poli sci major or board game enthusiast, the place offers super-cheap happy hour specials (which still apply on weekends, unlike some OTHER establishments...): Under $3 per drink, and about $5 per food item, and even after trying almost all of them (the pork croquettes are AMAZING) and drinking the whole time, our bill was about $34 for 3 people.
We sat relatively close to the bar, in the back, so we didn't give the service much chance to come to us, as we were almost constantly waving more orders to them.
In any case, this place could easily become a Sunday-afternoon habit.
Went in here once with my friend Greta and it went like this: walk in, look around, and walk back out.
2nd attempt: Went in here again, with Greta, another night after I decided to not pay the Sunset Tavern cover. Mosey to the back, sit my drunken happy ass at the bar and order a Bloody Mary. This place throws me a bit because the front reminds me of an old restaurant/diner with a speak easy lounge/bar in the back. Great big window with a view behind the bar though
Two drunken ass clowns decide to try and strike up a conversation with us. Proceed to get pissy because I'm "one of those girls", which I'm not quite sure of but am guessing "bitch who doesn't pay attention to my drunken advances". So one of them proceeds to tell me he was a naked dude on a bike at the solstice parade(I proceed to try and picture him naked), while the other one repeatedly yells at me that I suck. All the while, I'm trying to down my Bloody Mary, which is far too fucking Africa hot for my tongue.
So there it is. I must mention that the bartendress was a peach, even if she did give me heartburn with that drink.
I was here years ago for a bachlorette party and I remember them kicking people out so our large group could all sit together; I thought that was pretty cool, sorry if you were one of the people who had your table taken right out from under you that night I had nothing to do with it.
I was again here this past Saturday for some happy hour fun. Â The $2.75 wells were a pretty good deal. Â But the best part was playing Battle of the Sexes and beating the boys! Â Yes thanks to the People's Pub it was made very clear that girls (i.e. Mitzie and Rebecca) are smarter than the boys! Â Cheap drinks and a little boy ass kicking makes for a great happy hour.
