Went for an early brunch on a Sunday. No trouble getting a table outside, it was a beautiful day. The wait staff was very polite and had great personality. The mussels we ordered were good, the sauce was lobbed with butter and they had no issue supplying us with extra bread to sop it up.
All was well until I went to the restroom. . . OMFG, it was like CBGBs at a GG Allin show. Holes in the walls, graffiti everywhere, toilets smashed, WTF? If you can't control this place enough to keep the restroom clean, I can't imagine what the kitchen is like. I don't plan to.
The Quays is sort of like a werewolf in restaurant form. You come here during the day and it is a classy, beautiful restaurant on the water that has some of the best (albeit most expensive) food in Hoboken. You'll be treated to soothing music while staring longingly into your significant other's eyes, nothing could be better. Then you see a shadow start to come over your girlfriends forehead and you realize..."WAIT, IS THE SUN SETTING!? NOOOOOO!!!!" and this place downright transforms into one of the trashiest establishments I've ever seen.
If you like trashy clubs that have unnecessary lines and a cover (ugh), the night time version of the Quays is just for you! You'll be treated to crappy pop music and overpriced drinks. Oh joy!
Here's the thing. I can get good food anywhere. I won't soon forget the awful night I had at the Quays where my jacket was stolen and a drink was poured on me for dancing with some meathead's girlfriend.
You can take your delicious food and shove it up your ____ Quays, I won't be coming back here, ever.
Let me start of by saying how pricey this place is. I went here with my then boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary. To tell you the truth, the restaurant and the food itself is nothing special. You're really paying for the scenery. Even those we were sitting by the window, there was a big tree blocking most of our view of the NY skyline.
Now about the food. I had chicken that came with mash potatoes and string beans. My then boyfriend had the steak. Forgot what side dish he got. For dessert, we got  creme brulee and chocolate cheesecake. All together, the total was about $65.
Next time, I'll skip this restaurant and just enjoy the waterfront of Sinatra Drive.
Went on a friday night around 830 for dinner...we were the only people in the whole restaurant. I had the short ribs which were DISGUSTING. I got sick a few hours later. I will never go back.
Sad because its kind of a cool space and I went years ago and had a pretty good meal. Went very downhill. Go elsehwere
My boyfriend and I go out to dinner often, and this place was one of our least favorite.
--Food: 2. The crabcake appetizer was tasty, but it only came with one cake on some tiny ball texture stuff underneath. My boyfriend had the ribs with French fries which was ok. Nothing amazing. I got short ribs which sucked. It was cooked perfectly without any taste tho. I love mashed potatos but these were tasteless. Not happy! No flavor on any of my food.
--Drinks: 4. The best part of dinner were the strong and tasty drinks. The only reason they even got 2 stars was because of their drinks.
--Price: 2. We paid $0 because of our Groupon but the menu prices were on the higher side. Probably because it's Hoboken. The portions were generous.
--Service: 3. It was ok but as a waitress maybe I expect more. The girl we had was nice but had no personality. She had to call someone else to help us with menu questions. The menu isn't huge so u should kno it. Just saying.
--Atmosphere: 3. Umm ok so it reminded me of a patched up pub or something. Looks like a boat inside. At first glance it's nice, second glance it's weary. Idk something dingy about it. Cash bar? Thats classy ;) LoL.
Srry but I expected more from this place.
The location is fabulous tho. Right by the water with an amazing view of NYC! Great date location!
Not impressed. Worst lobster ravioli ever. We went for dinner and the beef spare ribs, their head-liner dish, weren't ready. Um what? Im sorry is it dinner time on a Sunday? I would never go back here. The decor... so weird. Â Pretty sure they can't figure out what they want to be. I felt like I was in the bowels of a cruise ship with pseudo beach decor? I don't get it. I don't want to go back. I felt bad for the waiter. They had one guy for the whole restaurant which unfortunately made for terrible service as they got busier. Such a shame. Very disappointing experience.
Review Source:although food was ok here (about a solid three stars), overall dining experience was disappointing, which downgraded my review to two stars.
the bf had a groupon for this place that was about to expire, so we stopped here for a late dinner last night. it seemed like everyone else was also trying to use up their groupon so the entire restaurant was out of cabernet (!) and the steak and frites dish that I wanted (btw the groupon deal allowed for an appetizer to share, two entrees, and two drinks). not a good sign. i was disappointed, but settled for a glass of the merlot and the ribeye, while the bf got a glass of pinot noir and pork chops.
merlot tasted like a cheap red of the $10 bottle and under variety. the calamari we ordered as an app was fine--did like the thai ginger/vinegar dipping sauce. after the runner plopped the entrees on our table and left, we realized that we didn't have forks. we flagged him down again and asked him for a fork--he nodded and dashed off, so we assumed he was on it. not the case. 10 minutes later, we flagged down our waitress again, who finally returned with forks. our waitress was apologetic about the forks and was nice enough. but she seemed to be responsible for nearly the entire restaurant along with just one other server and one or two runners.
food: i had asked for the ribeye medium, but the meat was cooked medium well to done. luckily, since the ribeye is a more fatty/tender cut of meat, it was still tasty. the blue cheese polenta that came with the ribeye was gross--really a combo that should never go together. i'm a human garbage disposal when it comes to food (not picky at all), but even i could barely eat more than a forkful of that polenta. veggies on the side were ok, but a little soggy. the bf's porkchops were fine--liked his roasted fingerling potatoes on the side way better than my polenta.
only bonus is that the restaurant's located right by the water, so we were able to take a nice stroll before we headed back home. would not return to this place. regular priced entrees are too overpriced for what the food/ambiance is, so glad that we were able to try this place at a discount.
I seriously thought I was dragged into a gay bar. Never have I seen so many bro's dancing together in circles. Maybe it was a gay bar?? Or an 18 & up gay bar?? Either way, extremely inexperienced bartenders, guys dancing in circles and a cover charge. I shall not be back. Lesson learned. If you have even the slightest of standards: DONT GO HERE. (BTW my gf's roommate has lost her bar decision privileges)
Review Source:First time in Hoboken.
Went with a group of friends (guys & girls) after hours to get a few drinks & go dancing.
Bouncers were total jerkoffs.
Place wasn't even close to be being packed & didn't let any one in.
Only people being let in ahead of everyone in line were a bunch of fat girls in a bachelorette party.
Bouncer was hooting & hollering, threatening patrons in the line.
Eventually got to the head of the line because every one in front of us decided not to wait any more.
My friend tried asking bouncer the situation & wait time, but was blatantly ignored.
Didn't even make it inside.
By the looks of the people waiting in line/smoking, the crowd was looking very unattractive.
Hope this place burns down or the bouncer has a stroke.

Dinner last night at The Quays was inspired by Groupon -- I love a good deal!
I must say, the place is very nice! Right on the waterfront of Sinatra Drive, pretty view of the city, nice interiors. Waitstaff was very attentive and nice!
Now lets get down to the food:
Appetizer -- Fried Calamari. Standard fried squid, but served with tentacles and rings (most places only serve rings, the tentacles are the best part!). There was marinara for dipping, as well as a fantastic vinegar based sauce. Cooked well, not rubbery or overbreaded.
Guinness Braised Short Ribs: HOLY HELL. the meat literally fell off the bone and was perfectly seasoned! i usually hate guinness (the boy picked this dish) but its not a strong taste in this dish. served with mashed taters and steamed veggies -- delicious!
Lobster Ravioli in vodka sauce: my pick (im a sucker for anything with vodka sauce). Pasta was perfectly cooked, excellent flavor in the filling (didn't taste like imitation seafood, which alot of places use), killer vodka sauce.
Overall, I'd definitely go back even without a Groupon! But just to show how good the deal was, with all that plus 3 alcoholic drinks, our final bill was $8.00 (of course, we tipped on the full amount to be fair).
Me likey Groupon.
Had a LivingSocial or Groupon deal for Quays. Â Service was good. Â I wasn't crazy about the food (I honestly can't even remember what I ordered- maybe pasta? that's how unimpressed I was). Â They didn't have many vegetarian options, so I was forced to order the one thing I could eat.
I would not go back again for dinner.
One of my worst dining experiences occurred at this place...
My parents and I came here on the fourth of July. We were in town to see the fireworks on the Hudson, but wanted to grab a bite beforehand. We didn't realize that most restaruants required a reservation. Quays was pretty much the only place that allowed us to get a table without needing a reservation.
We get seated at this really disgusting table, which is not wiped, or set up at all with utensils, etc. There were other tables that were clean and nicely set up. It wasn't even full either.
It took about 10 minutes for the waitress to finally come greet us, then another good 10 to take our drink order....not to mention, they were out of everything, bottles, the beer on tap and carried a bad wine selection.
Our food arrives and we still do not have our utensils, even after asking twice for them!
By the time the waitress brought them, our food was cold and not that great. The fries were probably the best thing and they weren't even that good to begin with.
Of course, Â it took forever to get our check and get the hell out of this place.
To top it all, there was only ONE server working all night, on the 4th of July. Not even a manager in sight helping out. I understand it isn't the waitress' fault but letting the whole establishment run under this kind of stuff on a crazy holiday shows that they simply don't care about their diners and service.
Never going back again. There are way better places in the area to give your business to for better service and food.
Lobstah ravioli and garlic bread, yo...deeeeelish...but may give ya date mad garlic breath. Â Jus sayin
Happy hour during the week...hella empty...but the bartender told me it went to 7 or 8pm...she hooked us up till 8...yeaa buddy
99% of the dudes were in plaid shirts and the chicks were dressed in glittery ho'utfits.
I'd hit again, maybe.
Brunch is very satisfying here. Our realtors highly recommend the peach stuffed french toast and the tuscan omelette with peppers, spinach, and spicy sausage.
The inside of this venue is nicely decorated but try to come on a nice day so you can enjoy its waterfront location.
At night this place turns into a lounge with techno music and such. Normal priced drinks and no cover to party.
5 stars you say? must have been some awesome experience, and it was. Â Note we came for brunch for my boyfriend's birthday and the food was a good solid 3 stars. I had the eggs benedict while the bf had steak and eggs. Â Our friends ordered fish and chips, croque madam, and peach french toast which they all seemed to enjoy. Â
So the 2 extra stars was definitely the service and getting to know the owner, Richie, I believe his name was. Â He was definitely a funny man Irishman, and definitely as my friend called a "proper irishman", Â he drank a lot and said what was on his mind. Â He was definitely a lot fun conversation saying and doing the most ridiculous things out there such as throwing our full bellini and mimosa glasses to the ground and giving us free harder drinks instead. He gave my party multiple free Patron shots, Jameson shots, a FULL BOTTLE of Bushmills Whiskey, and half a bottle of Crown Royale.
The Quays ended up being more than our average Sunday Brunch, and we LIKE IT :)
I'm giving out two stars to be charitable, and to give them the benefit of the doubt on the food, which I did not eat, because this place was just sad. Â A friend and I traveled out of our way to try this restaurant during Hudson Restaurant Week. Â We called to make reservations because we assumed that it would be busy at 8:30 on a Friday night. Â It wasn't. Â Other than one relatively large party with several small children who were running about, the place was empty. Â
When we were seated, we were given our menus, which were literally flyers printed on plain white copy paper that was not laminated. Â The regular menu was printed double-sided on 8.5" x 14" copy paper, and we were given only one "Restaurant Week" menu printed on 8.5" x 11" copy paper to share. Â We started with the drink menu, which was at least properly bound, but had very limited offerings for wine by the glass; five no-name whites and reds. Â
There were five entrees listed on the Restaurant Week menu. Â We came looking forward to the Chilean Sea Bass, which they were out of despite it being only 8:30pm and the place being empty. Â Prior to learning that it was not available, were disappointed to find that it included only Spring Vegetables and not the "bed of mushroom & asparagus risotto", which it was listed as including on the Quays website. Â When we asked the server about this, we were told that they have not served the risotto for "a while" and that they'd previously served it with lentils. Â
At that point we just asked for the check for our drinks and left.
Waterfront brunch always sounds good to me and I am so glad that this place didn't disappoint. Â I was visiting my wonderful friend, Meghan M., this past weekend and we decided to check out The Quays. Â And neither of us were disappointed with our decision.
We ordered the peach stuffed french toast - which was so, so, so ridiculously delicious and dangerously good. Â I could have cleaned the plate. Â We also had the tuscan omelette which was just as tasty, with peppers, spinach, spicy sausage, et cetera. Â The service was good and the staff friendly. Â And to top it off we got to relax, enjoy the waterfront, and sip on bellinis for a only $5 a piece.
Another bonus was that they are dog friendly, too!
I normally write off places along the Hoboken waterfront as cheesy tourist traps. Â Well, this weekend I was glad I threw caution to the wind, put my tourist hat on, and strolled down to The Quays for brunch with a friend in from out of town because I was proven wrong. Â Dead wrong. Â
Brunch at The Quays is absolutely lovely. Â The two of us (and my dog) sat outside across from the river, enjoying the view of the skyline. Â We sipped bellinis and shared peach stuffed french toast and a tuscan omelette (spinach, crumbled sausage, cheese, and a few other things I can't recall). Â The food was fantastic. Â Brunch entrees are reasonably priced and mimosas, bellinis, or bloody mary's are only $5 a pop. Â Definitely another brunch spot to add to my list of "go-to's" here in Hoboken.
I happened upon the Quays (really really wish this was properly pronounced as spelled, rather than "keys", btw... Silly English language. Â But I digress...) one fine Mother's Day Sunday (read as Yesterday) when a couple of friends and I were absorbed into a family gathering of another friend of the group. Â
I'm just finishing up college, so I'm not the type to eat out that often, and if I do it tends to be a chain merchant such as Tuesday's or Applebee's. As such, I had kind of forgotten what a trendy/classy normal restaurant had going price-wise. Â I would thus call it upscale (3$s), but most normal people working full-time would probably say 2$. Â However, this was all completely forgotten when they brought out my food.
The table picked out a couple of plates of calamari as appetizers, which was delicious though perhaps a tad salty. Â I selected seared sea scallops, and I was amazed. Â The scallops were utterly delightful, and were served over a plate of artichoke rissotto that made me harken back to days of salmon rissotto at my great-grandmother's house. Â Truly impeccable. Â
Ambiance was trendy but classy, and you could easily see how the facility converts into an upscale-ish lounge on weekend nights. Â Few plush long couches, nifty curved wooden railings on the edge of the floor plan as support beams, coat check, ample table storage on the patio outside. Â You can't forget that crystal view of Manhattan -- a big plus for the restaurant. Â I was a bit shocked there were only 3 parties seated (including ours, and fortunately for the waitstaff we comprised 15 people) at 5:30pm on a gorgeous Mother's Day sunday in Hoboken.
I went here with my sister and bro-in-law for a dinner and it was overall a good experience. The pesto salmon salad was just okay in my opinion. The pesto part was super salty, the dressing was very tart, but the salmon itself was cooked perfectly. My sister got the ribs and the sauce was delicious, and the FRIES were VERY good! Definitely try the fries! Also, they give a nice sized roll to start with, and it was an herb bread, hot and fresh out of the oven (very good).
The bar area looked awesome, and they have 1/2 off martinis and mojitios, Wed and Thur respectively. I would go back to try something else and have a drink!
I went here with a friend for my birthday. Â The decor was intimate place that looks great for a group of people to share a meal and stories. They had a nice bar area which wasn't different from any other bar in Hoboken. Â
The food was a great treat and a pleasure to eat. Â We started with the BBQ pulled pork egg rolls which were so good. Â They were a delight to eat that had a bit of kick in the end. Â Then, we ordered the Guinness Braised Short Ribs and Spaghetti Chicken Alfredo for out main course.
The Chicken Alfredo was cook properly with a very creamy sauce. Â It is a simple dish but it was executed properly. Â On to the short ribs has the most delicious sauce that made my lick my fingers. Â Along with sauteed snow peas, carrots, sweet corn and roasted garlic polenta, it was a complete meal. Â A tip for eating this disk, take a bit of the polenta and rib and it is devine.
The dessert was good, an apple streudal a la mode. Â It came with vanilla gelato. Â It was full of fresh apple and cinnamon.
i think the most memorable moment i had was the chef came out and talked to us at the table. Â He was a funny champ with a great passion for what he does. Â I almost forgot the mango martini's are great and I suggest that every has one in every meal.
I went here last Friday night for dinner with a girlfriend. She had their Restaurant Week dinner while I opted for their Quays Burger.
Quays Burger - This is a pretty significant burger. It's deceptively filling. I ordered it medium but it came out a bit more chewy and well-done than I would have liked. The fries were good though.
The place was virtually empty when we arrived at 7:30 pm but filled up around 8:30/9 pm. Apparently they have a DJ but we didn't stay long enough for that. Service was good (probably b/c we were the only ones there for a little while) and they were accomodating with the water and ketchup refills.
All in all, if you live in Hoboken and you're looking for a restaurant along the waterfront with decent food at decent prices, come to Quays. It won't blow you away but you won't leave upset either.
Went this weekend for my cousins birthday party and it was a great time! The DJ was excellent and everyone was up dancing.
I cant vouch for the food, because we did not eat, but it is a great spot in Hoboken, off of Washington, to dance the night away!
(note: Â they asked my fiance to remove his hat on the way in)
You know, I used to like Quays a lot more than I do now. I have eaten here a few times and the food has always been good. Unfortunately, the service and attention to detail brings this place down a few notches.
Most recently, I went with friends to grab drinks in the middle of the afternoon and was told I could not sit outside. Meanwhile, there was no one here - inside or outside. I could only sit outside if I was ordering food. This is bad for business - who wants to go to a place where no one's eating or drinking? The bar was cluttered with dirty plates and glasses and the hostess was doing her hair and getting dressed at the bar. Things like that totally piss me off.
On the food side, I have never had a bad meal here, though it has come out wrong a few times, because I have had a dumb waiter here or there. They have a pretty good brunch - both taste and price wise. All in all, a solid place for a meal with a nice view. The decor inside is just as nice - it's like you're sitting inside a fish (which is why it shouldn't be so dirty and nasty!).
To the comments about the club scene - yes, it gets busy and clubby after dinner and the clientele is mostly meatheads or Stevens kids. They play good dance music, but unless you're in that mindset or one in one of these genres, you might want to drink some place else.
I always have a good time at The Quays. People worry if they go, it will be too guido, but I don't really get that vibe. Can't a place just be a fun bar with a DJ and a dance floor? Or is that always goin' to get you an automatic guido tag? Given that this in North Jersey, well, yeah, I guess I kind of answered my own questions there.
To echo the other reviewers, The Quays is a great place to bring guests from out of town. You may get to see the New York City skyline day in and day out, but your friends will find the view across the Hudson awe-inspiring. And, in my opinion, of all the bars on the waterfront, The Quays is the best.
This could be the type of place where you'd almost expect them to give you a hard time at the door or overcharge you, with their lounge-like atmosphere and their flashy, river real estate. But this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the bouncers are generally non-intrusive and the drink prices are damn reasonable.
The Quays draws a healthy crowd, but it rarely feels cramped, as the open layout really helps with the flow of traffic. You shouldn't expect a place to sit and you'll want to be on your feet anyway. People come here to dance away the work week - fist-pumpin' optional.
Don't be fooled by some of the mediocre reviews, this place is excellent. It has a great bar which I used to like to stop at for a couple drinks before going out in the city. Â It was nice because it wasn't too packed with all of the undesirables that invade Hoboken on weekends. Â They usually go to the PATH bars, black bear, lua, nine, and 340 grill (next door). Â Unfortunately I guess that changed and they are coming to Quays now and complaining. Â So my review is as a restaurant - the food is the best of the three places at 333 River. Â
I've read reviews about poor service and I do admit it was pretty slow a few years ago the first time I came for brunch. Â that has changed and the service for dinner was prompt and friendly. Â The decor of the place is great, and thats what always drew me here. Â
We had the onion soup and chicken satay for apps. Â Both are recommended, although the onion soup was better. Â The chicken satay was good, not great. Â
For entrees, we had the lobster ravioli and steak frites. Â Those were both very good. Â I was very suprised with how good the steak came out ,because I usually never order steak outside of steakhouses. Â It came with pretty big steak fries too which were cooked and seasoned well. Â The asparagus wasn't very good, but as long as the meat and potato part are done right.
The wine was also pretty cheap, and the whole meal was reasonable (i think $120 for 2 including wine, tax, and tip). Â
Also, in the past I have been there for lunch/bar food, and brunch and I recall really enjoying them. Â I will def be back.
Quays tends to piss me off more often than not. Yes, the view is nice. Yes, there's lots of space. Yes, it looks nice inside. But the music?!? My god it is terribad. Not only does the DJ only play 30 seconds of a decent song mixed over the beat of another song, but he'll cut the track to switch to something completely different. There tends to be no flow in the music selection. I distinctly remember hearing reggae followed by a Michael Jackson remix....
The bar situation is a mess as well. They need more bartenders. There tends to be a really long wait to get a drink. However, from what my friends have told me, the mix drinks are made pretty well.
Biased review: it was a private event for the Stevens graduating class of 2008. Apparently it was also the last time we had this event there, but that's besides the point, and due to belligerent morons causing trouble, not the place itself.
Drinks were mixed well but they could have used more bartenders, especially knowing that X number of people had bought tickets to the event. I think there were 2 bartenders covering 250 people, possibly more.
Music wasn't too my liking, but if you read my reviews, you'll notice that this is a recurring theme with most places I go to, so I've learned to accept it. Such is my fate. Anyway, luckily the music wasn't too loud that I couldn't have conversations with people.
I might go back, although it seems a bit upscale to me, and I prefer more laid-back places.
5/16 update: went back here on Sat night. Line was long so we stopped at 3 forty grill for an hour. Came back to Quays at 12:45, no line and no cover - sweet. Â One of my friends who was inside earlier said it was very crowded around 10-11 pm (as I alluded to in my previous review). By the time we got there, the dance floor wasn't too crowded, and neither was the bar.
Inside, DJ was spinning Rap and Reggae, including a lot of old school reggae that you probably wouldn't hear anywhere else in the area. The crowd seemed to like it, including the group I was with. Overall, our experience here was much better than at 3 forty.
Since this is right on the water it is more expensive and tends to get a bit "guidoish". Â On Friday and Saturday you can pay for the open bar which is 30 or 35 for 3 hours. Â You will spend more than that on drinks and cover in about 2 hours so its definitely worth it. Â
Dance floor gets really crowded and the entire place gets crowded in general. Â This is mostly an out of towner's bar, you will find ppl from all over NY and NYC in Quays. Â I am 3 for 3 on blacking out with the open bar special so I am a fan of this place, however without that special I would never go here.
What an interesting place this is.
Right on the water so one of my favorite places to go with out-of-towners. Â I've never eaten here, but the bar scene is pretty good on the weekends, most people dance and the DJ mostly just plays top 40 hip hop, which works here. Â Can get very crowded but if they open up the cash bar in the back that helps a ton.
They also do an open bar special for like $30 on weekends. Â Crappy little plastic cups and I think just well drinks, but if you can put down enough between 10 and 1, it's a solid deal.
Brunch review only. With the great view, sitting outside would probably add a star, but it was a bit nippy for that. The food... good, not great or special in any way. Tuscan omelet is large with a nice serving of new potato hash browns and thin slices of melon on the side. I suspect the other omelets are the same presentation. I'm not a huge fan of new potato hash browns, but these were passable. The breakfast burrito is quite large and stuffed to the limit - good, but nothing great. It also came with the hash browns and melon. I did like the Banana Foster's waffle quite a bit and I think that's what I'll get from now on. Although, I'd need a side of bacon with it next time. Bloody Mary was not great though and had an olive instead of a celery stick - c'mon, what are we heathens? The lack of celery stick was very upsetting.
Wheelchair access: Very good. Lots of room between tables.
I don't know how to review this place. I never plan my night with Quays in mind  yet end up there for a drink at least once every few weekends. While it's got a great location, everyone knows that and the Saturday nights are so packed that we end up slamming our drinks and heading next door to Trinity.
Agree with the other reviews as there is not much else to say although I have heard that if you have a birthday here, the service is decent. Will have to come back for a visit and update.
This review is for Sunday brunch only:
We strolled in for brunch and were seated outside, which was great because there's a nice view across the river into NYC. Though several families/couples/girlfriends were brunching, it wasn't the same craziness that usually occurs on my side of the river, which was refreshing.
Keep in mind that after a night of drinking his homebrew, we were STARVING, so for brunch I had the breakfast burrito (eggs, cheese, onions/peppers, chorizo) with salsa and potatoes on the side. He had the Irish breakfast; ham, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, black-n-white sausage (weird irish blood sausages that are surprisingly tasty)....and we also split an order of french toast, along with his bloody mary and my mimosa.
WAY TOO MUCH FOOD...even for us, the ultimate hungover gluttons. Portions are the way I like them; LARGE...so much so, he took the french toast home.
Total, including tax & tip was $50. Had we not ordered the mediocre $5 drinks and the french toast, our bill would have been half as much, but que sera sera...
He described the Quays as a good place to bring your out-of-town visitors for brunch...and IMHO, that's completely accurate, because it was tasty, economical without being dirt cheap, and tasteful without being overly trendy.
Yeah...we'll be back.
My family and I went to The Quays for a Sunday brunch. I had called ahead to make reservations, and to let them know that it was the birthday of one us, and would they please bring out a little cake at the end without being asked. The hostess said yes, but it wasn't free. I was a bit surprised, and said I assumed it wouldn't be free. In any event:
My husband and I arrived earlier than the rest of the party. The restaurant wasn't entirely deserted but there were very few people. We did see the waitstaff still setting up. We were standing in the entrance for 5, maybe 7 minutes, waiting for someone to take notice of us, which was weird because they kept walking right past us!
The hostess was in jeans and a black wifebeater, and we could see that she was wearing a bright pink bra. I found this a bit off-putting--shouldn't she be somewhat professionally dressed? After all, it's supposedly a classy restaurant, right?
Our party arrived shortly thereafter and we were seated. Our orders were taken. So far so good. But we were waiting an inordinately long time for our food and when we finally were able to flag our server down, he said he'd go check on the food, which made me wonder: shouldn't he know the status?
When the food finally arrived, one of our party had to wait a little longer. Two of us got toast that was stone cold. One of us had asked for strawberries and cream with her Belgian waffle, and she got about 3 strawberries sliced and arranged around the waffle. She said, ruefully, she liked IHOP better because they pile the fruit on.
The two of us who got cold toast asked to have fresh toast, please. The server seemed surprised--"It's cold? Oh."--rather than apologetic and went off with our plates to get fresh toast. When our plates came back, instead of four halves of cold toast each, we had two halves of cold toast each. Very odd.
And the server forgot about the cake; I had to follow him not so subtly to remind him.
The food itself was all right. I thought the omelettes were heavy and lacked delicateness; the person who got the Vanilla French Toast said it was "okay" and the waffle was... so so. It was food that would have passed for "not bad" or "decent" at a restaurant that portrayed itself with less grandeur, I think. The Quays, from its website and from its facade and entrace, looks like a really nice place, like its neighbors 340 Grill and Trinity, both of which have great food. So I had hoped for a similar dining experience at the Quays, and was disappointed. The food was okay, nothing exciting, but the service was just subpar. I won't be going back.
I haven't tried the food, so this review is mostly on the nightlife & drinks aspect of the place.
Pros: Cool location, cool looking interior, no cover. Â Normal-priced drinks.
Cons: The crowd. Â Can't really call them bridge & tunnel crowd, because technically they haven't crossed either one. Â A lot of people with spiked hair, fake orange tans, lame pickup lines, and tasteless clothes.
Overall: If all other places are overcrowded and you are really really thirsty, give this one a shot.
