Decent hockey themed sports bar. Free Pop Corn (which ran out at some point the evening I was there) is the stand out feature. Nothing special in terms of beer selection and the food menu was a little lacking. Standard bar far but nothing that jumps out at you. Pizza/Burgers/Wraps and that's about it.
I had their wings which were average tasting but larger than normal. (The drumettes were practically the size of an actual drum stick).
I went there for a Hockey game though, and not the food, and in the case they delivered. Most of the TVs will play Blue Jackets games if one is on but they were happy to switch a TV for me to play a game from my home team. They have one large projection screen in a corner, TVs behind the bar and miscellaneous TVs scattered about. There were definitely some blind spots and a few seating areas with no TV close by, but there are definitely site lines from every seat.
All in all, a decent place to catch a game.
Great bar. Lots to offer! Although nothing really stands out besides it being a hockey bar. Well, that and their huge, shareable beer tubes.
Beer selection was OK. No crafts, which is expected from a sports bar in the Arena District. I wasn't that surprised.
Food was standard for sports bar as well. I happily scarfed down a 12 inch peperoni while sucking down a Blue Moon.
The Blue Jackets game was on; we were drinking cold beer; the pizza was hot and came out quickly. There wasn't much to be unhappy with at all.
Hockey fans rejoice! This is your place! But - I'm sure you already knew that.
I never actually intend to go to this bar, but it's nice, nonetheless. Â It's large, particularly in the summer, when the outside space is available. Â The bar is nicely situated in the middle so you can approach from all angles. Â TV screens are plentiful, and there's usually one or two good beers on tap. Â
Generally, however, it's indistinguishable from any other generic bar. Â It's a nice jumping off point for a night, but there's just nothing special to draw you in.
My wife and I stopped in this place for some food and a beer before a concert at Nationwide Arena. Â With thousands of concert goers coming to the area and Bengals/Browns/Steelers all playing on TV the bar had ONE person working. Â She was working her ass off but being both waitress and bartender for that many people was overwhelming. Â We ordered some wings and a couple of burgers. Â The spicy garlic sauce on the wings was tasty but the meat was a little rubbery. Â The burgers were probably the driest I have ever had. Â Cooked beyond well done.
Review Source:While I'm not a huge fan of the bars in this area, R Bar is kind of the lesser of the evils. I've usually only come here because of organized events like happy hour meet n' greets.
There's really nothing horrible to say about R Bar, but nothing fantastic, either. If you're in the Arena District for other reasons (like a hockey game, if that ever happens again), then this is a good option, but I wouldn't go out of my way to be here unless you have another purpose.
Of the bars around, it's more hocky-centric than the others with their decor and general focus.
A basic, pleases-most bar near the action.
Come for the hockey, stay for the beer towers! This place is always hopping; especially on nights when the CBJ are playing. There are TVs all over the place with various sporting events always televised. If hockey is in season (not locked out!) there will be NHL games on all of the screens.
In the back corner there's a 4 player PacMan arcade game that is an absolute blast to play. There's also a free popcorn maker to satisfy your cravings for salty food.
Great fun space in an area of pop-collar PITAs.
Prices are right, drink specials daily.
They serve Brezel Pretzels!!! (yay! Â that's really why I go)
The mozz sticks are baked not fried - very yum!
Often they are out of their food items.
Not a fan of the Pizza, might be great with pepperoni as it seems to come with a lot of it. Â But, I'm a veg and the sauce is scarce and bland, the cheese not the focal point.
PLENTY of TVs. Â Clean restrooms.
It's actually fun to watch hockey here!! and, since he's with his own kind, I don't have to censor the Mr. lol
This may be a hockey bar, but they are also an amazing every other sport bar when there's not hockey on. Just popped over to watch the NCAA tournament and there was a nice crowd of people but not too crazy. Probably gets to be too much during CBJ hockey games. Love the bartenders. They are really nice and quick. Free popcorn get it's own star on my rating. I just love popcorn and beer. Also, we extremely surprised at how much I liked their chicken quesadilla. I'm VERY picky about my quesadilla's and theirs was pretty darn good. Also, decent bathrooms and lots of TVs. All in all a really great sports bar in a good location, but not in the middle of the main party street... which is a good thing in my opinion.
Review Source:Headed here to meet up with others before going to the hockey game. As all the other reviews will tel lyou, this is a true hockey bar. If you do not like loud crowds, too many tvs and guys in ill fitting shirts this is NOT the place for you.
fast service for our large group. Reasonable prices and easy stroll across the ped bridge to get to game.
I'm not a hockey fan, but sometimes I end up here...usually on my way to an event in the Arena District, or at the very end of the night. It's scary both times.
R Bar is a quintessential sports bar centered around hockey. There are TVs everywhere, so if you're not into buying expensive CBJ tickets but just want to drink with some friends, this isn't a bad stop. Coors Light and other popular beers are a-plenty.
I wouldn't say I like R Bar, but it's conveniently located and it makes for some really hilarious people watching. I would give it a shot over places like Brothers or the Park Street Complex (minus the Tavern, which isn't so bad).
Good place, Great hockey atmosphere. But unless you are a huge hockey fan, there isn't much to write home about. Just a typical bar. They do have some ok beers on tap. And during the summer it has a pretty good patio, but it is kinda small and just ends up getting filled up with smokers. If you get there early enough it isn't bad. All n All, if you are going to go to a hockey game, make a stop there, you'll be in good company.
Review Source:I thought I had reviewed this place last month, but I guess I didn't. We went there to watch the NLCS game on TBS since I'm cheap and don't have cable. We sauntered up to the bar, and asked the bartender which of the many TV's might be showing the NLCS (it was about an hour before first pitch). She had no idea what I was talking about. I clarified; "The National League championship game". Still, no clue. "The Cardinals and Brewers major league baseball game on TBS". She finally said that she didn't know anything about baseball, so she'd need to talk to her manager. Seriously? You can't just tell me that you can or cannot turn a TV to TBS?
In the end, we got a manager to put it on the absolute smallest TV in the place (think Michael Scott's plasma). I'm convinced that every bar in the arena district sucks. Please prove me wrong.
This place reminds me of a blue collar version of Bar Louie. I have no idea where my mind formed that idea, but it just did. If you ever want to be around hockey fans and watch hockey, or pregame before a hockey game, or celebrate after a hockey game, then this is the place. There's hockey memorabilia adorning the walls and even seat backs. There's a pool table. There's a popcorn machine. There's always some good beer special, which typically includes Labatt. Â I was blown away at how good their pizza is. It's like crazy good. I'm also always surprised at how nice and clean their bathroom is. There's a good vibe of people here and the testosterone definitely outweighs the estrogen levels, but it's not meat head or aggressive testosterone, which is pleasant. I've been over dressed here a few times and that will get you some looks but whatever, no biggie.
Review Source:Came out here for a hockey game last year and this place quickly became my favorite bar, even though they are the official bar of the horrible blue jackets haha. food is great, staff is super friendly, prices are good and besides on game night it was easy to move around and talk to different people. I would absolutley go back.
Review Source:First of all, I'm a huge hockey fan not just the Jackets, so this bar is great to watch any and every hockey game. Â The food is pretty good for having a small kitchen. Â The biggest issue is the service. Â Very slow, even on off nights when there are only 10 people at the bar. Â Sometimes I feel like I did something wrong by asking for another beer. Â The hockey draw helps this bar out but if the service continues like this why would I go there when the season is over? Â I can get attitude at much better places in Columbus. Â Funny I have mentioned the service issues to several other hockey fans and they all agree. Â Could be a tough off season. Â I hope not because I do like having a hockey bar in Columbus.
Review Source:This bar reminds me a lot of every other bar in the Arena district except that its a HOCKEY bar!!! I love hockey I have seasons tickets to the Jackets. I wish they would have some air hockey or maybe the old school hockey game that has a huge plastic dome on it, you know it. Other than that its pretty awesome. Fun fact- the urinals have pictures of other teams to pee on! SWEET!
Review Source:Definitely a hockey bar--thought I was in Canada--but a great place to hang out on an NFL Sunday afternoon too. And, it's only 10 mins from the airport if you are looking to kill time before a flight. Thin crust pizza is a good choice. Great service. Nice location in the arena district (although a little tricky to find your first time since you can't see from road). Indoor and outdoor seating. Can't wait to come back sometime for a hockey game.
Review Source:I love R Bar for the fact that it claims to be one thing--a hockey bar--and it's really, really awesome at being just that.
The walls are covered with museum-like Blue Jackets memorabilia. Â I've been there a zillion times and I still don't think I've seen everything. Â The service is fantastic, even when the place is packed, and the prices are pretty good. Â I think my favorite part about R Bar, though, is the crowd. A bunch of crazy hockey fans all in one room usually makes for a pretty entertaining night.
I have to couch my review a bit.
If you are a hockey fan - or even a sports fan in general - the R Bar is a 5 star slam dunk.
If you're the type who likes a quieter bar with little to no sports stuff, you should really consider a different one.
R Bar has been one of the big hockey bars in town since they opened, and following their move to the other side of the Arena plaza (they were formerly off Marconi Blvd.), if anything, they've kicked it up a notch. The staff is friendly, and either a hockey fan or more than capable of keeping up a conversation with one as they go about their business. Seating is good and the walls are covered with hockey memorabilia - not just the Blue Jackets and Ohio State, but also the old Columbus Chill, Checkers, and other former minor league teams who once played in the capital city. (Even a framed jersey from the 'Columbus Mad Cows' stunt the Chill did back in '98!)
In addition to 4 massive big screens for each side of the actual bar area, there are smaller sets located around the bar and a large projection screen at the far wall for large events.
The beer and liquor selection is more than reasonable, and the recent addition of food turns them from being a pre-game or after game stop to a full service destination in the arena district. While the menu is relatively basic (sandwhiches, pizzas, burgers, nachos, etx), the food itself is good for what you're getting and quite reasonably priced.
If there is a word of caution to anyone looking to check the place out, it is that R Bar is one of, if not the, main post-game desitnation for a large group of CBJ fans. On game nights, expect the bar to be packed, loud, and for service on both food and drinks to slow down appropriately as the staff deals with the heavy attendance.
While I'm not a fan of Frog Bear and Wild Boar after a hockey game because the crowd isn't hockey fans (and that kind of annoys me after a fun game), this place is definitely a hockey fan's type of place. Â
There are plenty of sports memorabilia on the walls and the TVs are tuned to hockey and other assorted sports. Â The beers are cheap and on game nights they have portable bars set up so you don't have to go all the way to the bar. Â The drawback of this place is that all the other hockey fans know its the place to go. Â On a game night, it packed. Â Standing room only and sometimes not even breathing room. Â I just wish it were a little bigger so I wasn't annoyed with all the people so close.
Blue Jackets fans take note, if you aren't at the R Bar, you're missing out. Â This is THE hockey bar in town. Â So much so that during special events, players like Rick Nash take time out of their busy schedule to pour drinks. Â Rick Nash is soooo dreamy.
Great happy hour from 2pm-9pm. Â $2 bottles, $2.50 domestic drafts, and $3.50 for Guinness on tap. Â Yum. Â Service can get a little slow on game nights, especially during the witching hours from when offices close until the puck drops. Â The huge diamond shaped bar usually has three or four bartenders and two bar backs hauling butt popping off bottle caps and pouring drafts. Â The shot of choice at this CBJ bar is the "Stinger," tequila, blue curacao, dropped in some Smirnoff Ice. Â Deceptively potent. Â
The patio doesn't have furniture just yet but I hear it's coming soon. Â The kitchen isn't open just yet either (I think they are aiming for the 2010 season) but patrons can order from a couple pizza delivery places and the staff will take care of everything else. Â Four flat screens behind the bar, a couple more scattered throughout, and a big projection screen for game nights. Â When the Blue Jackets win the Stanley Cup, it will DEFINITELY make an appearance at R Bar.
