Live jazz brunch! Never experienced that before. Came here for Sunday brunch with two of my friends. They had a GiltCity deal to use and I ordered a la carte on top of it. We all did the bottomless mimosas as well.
We had reservations at 11:00AM and we didn't actually need them, the place wasn't very crowded. We were seated in the bar area (which was FREEZING!) Strong AC! Our server Brandon, was very friendly and very nice and we got our first mimosas right away. We ordered:
- Beignets - bite sized pieces of dough, very fluffy and generously sprinkled with powdered sugar.
- Biscuits and gravy - very dense biscuits, gravy is delicious!
- Etoufee Omelette - huge and very flavorful! Loved the spicy sausage and seafood pieces.
- Duck confit hash - my friend asked for fried eggs instead and made her own has. Also very good.
- Crab cake benedict - Crab cakes were yum! Not too much filler.
Portions are HUGE! We all ended up taking our food home and the bottomless mimosas are great! Brandon gave us refills whenever we asked and we definitely took advantage of the bottomless portion. They close at 2:30 and we were basically kicked out because of that, but in the nicest way possible.
Great, friendly service! Live music and bottomless mimosas! Awesome place to have brunch!
Found a seemingly great deal on Gilt City LA and bought a $30 voucher for 4 cocktails and 4 appetizers for 2 people. Â Score, yeah? Yeah...sorta. I had called ahead and made a reservation and informed the hostess that I had this voucher. However, when my husband and I showed up, it's as if no one had taken my information down. Â We were initially seated in the bar, but then the hostess came back and told us she had a table ready. Â However, once we were greeted by our server, and we explained that we had a Gilt City coupon, he said, "Oh, no, no, you can't sit in the dining area. Â You can only sit at the bar." Â So...we were moved a second time, BACK to the bar table we were previously sitting at. Â I'm already irritated.
Once RE-seated, the bartender came by and asked what we wanted to drink. Â We told him about our coupon and he said "Oh, well you actually can't order any food off the dinner menu, you have to order off the happy hour menu." Â Ok. Â So he brought over a happy hour menu and informed us that we can order any cocktail or glass of wine or beer we want for our 4 drinks. Â He showed us on the back of the dinner menu the wine and cocktail options, and left us to make our choices. A different bartender came to take our drink orders, and when we both ordered specialty cocktails off the dinner menu, she says "Oh...I'm sorry but you can only get well cocktails. Â And there are only 3 wines you can choose from...and 3 (shitty) domestic beers." Â Umm...ok. Â I decided to order a Cab and my husband ordered a whisky sour. Â My wine surprisingly good considering it was a happy hour selection, but the whisky sour was more sour than whisky. Â For our second drink, I got the Pinot Noir, again pretty good wine, and my husband ordered a dirty martini. Â They made it extra wet, and it was, in general, a so-so drink.
As far as the food is concerned, we ordered the smoked salmon, the bruschetta, the pork belly sliders and the figs with goat cheese. Â the salmon was an extraordinarily small portion, and had entirely too much acid. Â The bruschetta was one, singular toasted piece of bread with chickpea hummus or something on it, with, again, way too much lemon. Â The sliders were decent, although my bun was a little stale and also burnt, but they were cooked well and pretty flavorful. Â The figs with goat cheese were actually quite delicious, but couldn't make up for the disappointment of the rest of the meal.
The worse part of this whole experience, however, was the jazz, or lack thereof. Â During the entire hour and a half we were there, we heard maybe 15 minutes of live jazz. Â And we couldn't even hear it from where we were seated. Â I feel that any place that touts itself as a "jazz" lounge should actually have real live jazz musicians playing real live jazz. Â Or am I being silly? Â the place was overall pretentious with nothing to show for it. Â And while the wait staff was friendly-ish, they were disorganized. I have no interest in going back. Â There are a lot of restaurants and lounges that are MUCH better
I came here for brunch on Sunday with my boyfriend. It was around 11:30 on Sunday morning and I was pretty nervous that we would have to wait because we didn't have a reservation. Luckily, we got there and were seated immediately.
I had always wanted to go to this place when it was on Raymond, so I was very excited to eat at the new location. I have to say I love the atmosphere and decor. It was bright, open, breezy...very relaxing. Our waiter came by immediately and served us water and provided us with menus.
We decided to order bottomless mimosas, beignets, the eggs purgatory and the eggs benedict with ham. Delicious!! The beignets are super cute; they're bite sized, and plenty of them to whet your appetite before you get your meal. They're also really sweet. The eggs purgatory was good. The marinara sauce was spicy, and the eggs combined with it nicely on the bread (which was a little crusty for my taste, but my boyfriend loved it). Finally, the eggs benedict with ham really took the cake. The ham wasn't this lame, thin slice, it was a huge CHUNK. The english muffin it was on top of was really sweet and warm. I could honestly eat that all day.
About halfway through, a musician started playing. I love live music and this was no exception.
All in all I can't wait to do brunch here again. Too bad it's so expensive though.
My husband and I recently spent a wonderful evening at redwhite+bluezz. Â I cannot compare to the previous location as we had never been there, Â but we will definitely be going back. Â Loved the ambiance, the food and first rate music. Â Although, I agree with other reviewers that the music was a little too loud for easy dinner conversation and the food was delicious, but a little pricey.
My only complaint would be the treatment we received from the hostess. Â I did not catch her name, but she was blond. Â We arrived in a timely manner for our dinner reservation only to be told by the rude and unprofessional hostess that our reservation could not be located. Â When we explained that we had in fact made the reservation she seemed to smirk at us in disbelief. Â We are not in the habit of crashing weddings or restaurants and did not appreciate the treatment.
All in all great food, music and atmosphere. Â The hostess was the only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth at redwhite+bluezz.
I'm shocked at the good reviews for this place. It's definitely my least favorite place I've been in Pasadena, maybe LA county at least in recent memory.
Musics too loud. Reservations were apparently difficult even though it was empty. Service was embarassing. I tried to order the Eggs Diablo or something. turns out you can't get sauce on the side and its made with chicken. Le Sigh. So what did I order?
2-EGG BREAKFAST
hash browns, artisan bread, seasonal fruit, choice of: nueske's bacon, niman ranch ham or housemade sausage
Thats 12 dollars. The "hash Browns" are cubed potatoes, worse than dennys/ihop. Artisan bread was fine (its thick wonder bread, not even wheat option aparently). I never even received fruit even though i asked. the waiter just said "no" and turned around. it took a solid 15minutes to get the bread once my eggs arrived. OMG the eggs.....
He didn't even ask how I wanted my eggs. Walked away. twelve dollar eggs and he just walked away.. what should I expect? scrambled? poached? over easy? suspense!!!!
It took a solid 10+minutes to even get his attention to come over so i could ask what I would be getting since he didn't seem to care what I wanted. I asked for over medium. he confirmed. Runny whites= NOT OVER MEDIUM.
Worst food for 12 dollars I've ever had, and probably worst brunch yet.
Nothing was good, and I won't return. It's not even the price thats so ridiculous. The food was significantly worse than Dennys.
The buser was actually helpful.
One star for free street parking on Sundays.
redwhite+bluezz needs to seriously define what it wants to be. Hey, based on the location, service, ambiance and food it would be an easy five star plus in my book. The catch is in the noise level. While I do love jazz/blues, when I am savoring a full on meal and drinks in a small venue I want to be able to converse with my table companions without shouting. The live music offerings are great in theory, but not in reality. The venue is too small to play it both ways. Perhaps timing of live music might need checking. For me, brunch with friends before a play. No thank you. As a background vibe. It would be great. Also would love an outdoor dining option, but that doesn't look practicable as it would impact the Pasadena Playhouse courtyard. The food, drinks, service was very good. Tasty Bloody Mary's. Sampled the prix fixe Father's Day brunch. Order two meals for three of us. Tasty crab cakes, great Caesar salad, cheese omelet and two desserts. Delish. Have renewed my season tickets at the Playhouse. Would love to return to this restaurant routinely. I shall see how the noise level evolves for my particular needs.
Review Source:Delightful place.
My fiancé and I treated one of our good friends out for his birthday yesterday and the food did not disappoint. The ambience was very classy and "jazzy", per the name of the restaurant. The service was quite pleasant, as well. Much appreciated. This is what we devoured:
- As an appetizer, we started off with a creamed corn/with stripped steak, and a potato chip on top of brisket (yum! absolutely loved the creamed corn).
- My fiancé and friend ordered house salads, and they enjoyed it. I myself had the soup of the day: the Baked potato soup. Albeit heavy, I really enjoyed the cheese and the different notes.
- For entrées, I had the Grilled Salmon and it was topped with prunes & apricot sauce. The Salmon was on top of wild rice, which I thought was a bit grainy. It was an interesting mix, although I did not really care for the prunes. My fiancé had the Mushroom Risotto with big slices of cheese on top (interesting...), and our friend had the Ox-Tail and the Corn Rice. It was the special for the night; I was able to try a bit of the Ox- Tail and the taste was very pungent, but delicious! Overall, I enjoyed the Salmon nonetheless.
- For Dessert, we had the "Chunk-e Monk-e" (Spelling?) And it was so cute! It was a banana bread, with chocolate pieces, whipped cream, and topped with honey. It may not sound good, but boy did it taste fabulous. Our friend received a complimentary birthday salted caramel ice cream. It was good, because it wasn't too sweet.
- For drinks, I had the lemonade as I did not want anything alcoholic for the night. My fiancé had a "dark & stormy" and our friend ordered a glass of Riesling with a second serving as the Orange Martini.
Overall, I'd say our trip to this restaurant was a success. However, I miss their old location. This new location is a bit bigger, but harder to miss as it is tucked away next to the Pasadena Playhouse. Their old location was a quick walk from Old Town Pas and within a 2 minute walk from the Parking structure, which I appreciated. Now, it's a bit harder to find parking. All in all, good restaurant though, and a lovely live Jazz Band. We'd be back, but because of its high prices, it may take us another celebratory reason to come. Either way, it's a GO!
Went here last Saturday night with a big group. The food was decent, most of my party enjoyed what they had ordered. Drinks were great especially the Manhattans and French 75s. As I know this is a jazz bar, the music was great except it was EXTREMELY loud to the point I could not converse with my party and almost giving me a headache . If they just turned it down a notch I think the experience would have been more pleasant. Staff was good as well as service.
Review Source:I do not know what happened this place after it moved to the new location. Â The new location is nice...right next to the Pasadena Play House and much easier access. Â The other one was cozy but this place the bar rocks with a big screen TV but I love how they separate the bar from the stage and main dining area. Â It still has a nice romantic cozy feel to it. Â Perfect place for a date. Â This is where it stops folks. Â The old place had wine flights that were amazing that paired perfectly with their cheeses and meats. Â Their burger also was to die for. Â This time around I am not so sure what happened. Â The burger wasn't nearly as good as the old location. Â The lamb the waitress told us to order medium rare and it came about unevenly cooked. Â The short ribs...meh...The saving grace is the souffle. Â I will give this place another chance but this place isn't cheap...used to be worth the price...maybe they just need to settle into the new location...I do not know but I hope they get it back on track.
Review Source:A friend and I thought we'd try out the new location. Â The service was exceptional and the food was great. Â I had the fish special which was tuna and very tasty. Â I love the ambience of this restaurant although I think the bar is more special than the restaurant. Â In fairness, however, they said they weren't quite done with the restaurant space. Â I will definitely go back here.
Review Source:Must go and enjoy this wonderful experience. Started off in the bar with delicious appetizers and drinks. The live jazz music set the party/festive atmosphere. We were celebrating an early Mothers Day. The dinner was a memorable experience. All five of us had beautifully presented, totally delicious gourmet meals. They ranged from incredible steaks to melt in your mouth fish. I had the duck that I would recommend. The desserts and coffee were some of the best we have ever had. Recommend the chocolate soufflé. To top it all, the live jazz band were world class. The upcoming jazz groups are shown on the web site. We all who were there that evening expressed that we will be back soon and tell all our friends about this great experience.
Review Source:Great live music. Good food. What more could you ask? Okay, maybe that came off sounding like a commercial, but this place really is just that good. Came here with a group of four and stayed for several hours just eating and drinking. And our friendly server, Kendra, was simply the best. Her suggestions for appetizers and alcohol that would compliment those food selections were spot on, potent and tasty. Kendra also made sure our food items were brought out quickly and still hot, which is something I look for in a top tier server. The bar also features two large TV screens; one showed sports while the other broadcast poker tournaments. Are you kidding? Dude, you found my weak spots. I refuse to move from this spot for the next several hours. Looks like I've found a new favorite watering hole.
Review Source:I was thrilled when RW&B moved to my area! Another place I can get my sip on and be fancy at while listening to some cool jazz.
My friend and I came here on a Friday night and used the $30 Gilt City Voucher for 2 drinks per person and four appetizers to share. I know its a fairly new voucher but the hostess kept looking at us as if they didnt post the deal and had to keep running back to ask the manager. We got turned away because you have to print the voucher (which I have never had to do the Groupons or Living Social) but little did they know we had friends with printers near by and to the hostess surprise (She looked pretty shocked) we came back with a printed voucher in 5 minutes. After some more running back to talk to the manager, we finally got the okay to sit by the bar.
The service was rather slow, they seem short staffed so we must of waited a good 20 minutes before we even got our first drink. IF YOU GET THE GUILT CITY VOUCHER THE DRINKS ARE NOT THE FANCY DRINKS POSTED ON THE VOUCHER SITE!!! You get your choice of Happy Hour Drinks which include well drinks, wine & beer, ya I was disappointed too! The appetizers came out fairly quickly and we got the Cattle Call, Crab Cakes, Duck Tacos & Â a Meat & Cheese Plate. My fave was the Cattle Call, very delicious! Everything else was so so.
Bottomline is....the music is loud, you will have to shout talk to your friends, the service can be slow, the cocktails especially the wine is over priced (seriously, walk next door to monople wine for better wine if your going to pay $15 a glass), the food is aight but pricey...ummmmm the ambiance is cool. Would I come back? Eh......
Brought my sis here for her bday about two weeks ago. The live jazz band was awesome. That was my reason for coming to begin with. I had the steak for dinner. It was perfectly cooked, well seasoned with some sort of blue cheese sauce on the side. It was freakin Delish!
I drank expensive glasses of wine all night that was the only down fall. I think I paid approx. $14 per glass of chardonnay. To me thats waaay to much for a half of a glass of wine.
But as I said the music, ambiance, and food were all superb. I will be returning very soon.
Went with 3 girlfriends on Saturday night. Â First time at the new location. Â LOVED the former location and went to the bar on many occasions for wine flights and cheese plates. Â
I guess the bar at the new location is larger but I still prefer the other bar - it just seemed more cozy and was a GREAT place to meet a date. Â At the new bar, the tables aren't as intimate and if the band is playing - FORGET about having a conversation. Â SO LOUD!!! Â We sat at a front table near the window and despite sitting next to my friend on a couch I could barely hear her. Â It was impossible to hear or talk to my friends sitting on the couch across from us. Â IMPOSSIBLE. Â
Oh - and the saddest thing about the new location? Â NO WINE FLIGHTS. Â Whaaaa??? Â
I live within walking distance of the new location and would likely be a frequent customer if they could simply adjust the noise level. Â And bring back the wine flights. Â Is that too much to ask?
Dear Red White & Bluezz:
Please decide if you want to be a jazz club or a restaurant that has a live jazz band.
For goodness sake, the jazz band was so loud that it contradicted the idea of being able to have a nice dinner and catching up with friends. We literally had to yell at each other in order to hear what we were saying and in the end, we all gave up and ate our dinner without any conversation.
The food was OKAY, a bit overpriced. I ordered the Creamy Garlic Caesar Salad with free range chicken, $19 bucks. Worth it? No. My chicken was dry and overcooked.
The service was outstanding. I'd definitely come back here but only for drinks. Â
I also loved the iconic picture of Satchmo on the wall :)
New owners. New location. Maybe new chef? Nice spot to grab a drink and catch some live music, or to mingle before/after a show at the Playhouse. Food maybe not as good as the old spot, and the parking situation could get a little tricky, but the venue seems more spacious and comfortable.
Review Source:I used to go to their previous location which I adore: it was cozy (starting with the place ambience and finishing with menu), luxury and always had great music.
We decided to go there yesterday to hang out and discovered that the place was relocated.
The new place is larger  but it feels so uncomfortable. It feels like like upgraded mcdonalds but not like winery.
it looks like they hired the cheapest contractor to remodel the place: the guy could not even paint the plinth in dark paint without making the white wall dirty. The tile guy (I saw tile installed in the bathroom) probably installed tile first time in his life.
Thus, I like "Le chat noir" picture on the wall - very nice (it takes all attention so people didn't notice the terrible job of the installers)
Food was great just as it used to be in the previous place, customer service is amazing.
Great new space and energy now at the Pasadena Playhouse. Impeccable food and service. Cool, fun new space. Unbelievable homemade cream of potato vegetable soup, taste crab cakes, yellow fin tuna, hearts of Romain with creamy Caesar. Its all good. Miss the fried mas and cheese appetizer. Feels like you are not in Pasadena when you're there!
Review Source:I was surprised to see RWB attached to the Pasadena Playhouse (I must have been hiding under a rock, as the Raymond location is now closed), but it's a nice addition to the neighborhood's selection of eateries.
I love the more casual atmosphere and menu of this outpost of RWB. It's less stuffy and white linen tablecloth than it had previously boasted on Raymond. Much of the staff is the same and they still have a fantastic lineup of live music (jazz and blues mostly).
The bar is first come, first serve and they have cocktail servers for the seats that aren't attached to the bar. There's a couple TVs for sports or in lieu of sports they'll broadcast the band in the next room. The bar's shelving divides the two rooms (formal dining versus casual bar seating), and there's a large window allowing you to see the inner workings of the kitchen (they're not trying to hide anything)!
I went twice in one evening. Pre-show for an app and a few drinks and post show for something more substantive. The pre-show experience was much more enjoyable, which makes me think they still need to work out the kinks for consistency, but both sit downs had gleaming moments. The service was very attentive the first go 'round, smiles all around, constantly refilling drinks, checking up on us, complimentary fresh-baked rolls (look better than they taste, but the butter helps!). I also enjoyed two glasses of Zin Your Face Off. Sadly, they weren't serving wine flights because they didn't yet have the flight glasses, but I think those are the way to go once they are offered. Good price and great selection. Their meat/cheese selection is cutely coded with a key of each cheese's texture and you can either mix and match your own or go with one of their pre-selected combos. I did the latter and it was a decent size plate with California meats and cheeses. It was also served with a figgish compote, bread, and two baby pickles.
The second time around was a little less friendly (our server wasn't disengaged), but we got to sit front and center of the band (don't go on a date because you won't be able to hear your date), which was delightful and a great way to unwind after seeing a show at Pasadena Playhouse. My mom and I ordered coffee (refilled generously) and then she wanted something hearty so she ordered the sliders. Funny enough, this dish isn't sliders at all, so I think they should change the name on the menu as it would be frustrating for someone looking for between the bun sliders. This dish was a deconstructed slider plate featuring short rib and chipotle flank steak. The steak was spicy and the short rib mouthwatering. It was a lovely presentation, but again, would throw you off if the waiter didn't mention the unorthodoxness of it (he did, to his credit). It was quite filling, so I guess the bun is overrated!
They mentioned this was a limited menu at the moment and they'll be expanding soon. To be honest, I think the menu was in tip top shape as is and doesn't need anything extra to bulk it up. Too many options can be overwhelming!
Middle aged black woman waits for fifteen minutes to be acknowledged by bartender while streams of WP walk up & get orders right away. Middle aged black woman complains about the wait. Bartender lies and says he asked her what she wanted. Bartender comps drink. Invisibility can't be comped.
