Our evening started out on a sour note. Â I called to change our dinner reservation from 8 to 6 and was told they did not have our reservation. Â I asked to speak to a manager who instead of providing good customer service told me that I had not called or had called their other restaurant. Â He was just rude. Â He argued with me! Â In fact I had called and record of it on my phone. Â I was told they could not get us in at our desired time because they were SO busy. Â We arrived at the restaurant at our original time to get drinks in the bar while we waited. Â We were astonished to find that there was one party in the restaurant! Â The place was empty! Â
As far as our service goes...service was fine. We had to ask for more drinks for each round. Â And then they brought our check without asking if we wanted dessert or another round of drinks. Â Food was good. Â Nothing spectacular, but nothing bad. Â A few of our sushi rolls were quite fishy tasting. Â
We did not care for the atmosphere at all. Â It felt like a little more upscale McDonalds. Â The outdoor seating area looks nice. Â
Bottom line is we would never return. There was nothing to make us want to go back.
This is my favorite sushi place in Louisville. I go mainly for lunch and they have a great $10 menu with lots of variety and very generous portions. You won't need to eat dinner if you have one of their bento boxes for lunch.
My favorite lunch order consists of their iceberg salad with that perfect ginger dressing, an avocado roll and a plum ginger roll. The plum ginger roll is the perfect wild combo of flavors unlike any I've ever had anywhere in the world.
Stick to the appetizers and rolls. Â Had we stopped there, this would probably be a 4-star review as everything we ordered was really tasty. Â I also had a really good Woodford Manhattan.
However, the entres leave a lot to be desired. Â There was only one person in our large party who enjoyed his. Â All of us who ordered medium rare steak received meat that was closer to well done. Â Also, my steak was really chewy and had quite a bit of connective tissue. Â Even the shrimp was over-cooked.
Also, I'm fairly forgiving of slow service when I eat with a large group, but this time I'm going to complain. Â He did the best he could, but there was only one waiter for the entire restaurant, which is pretty inexcusable for a place the size of Sapporo.
Great sushi for Kentucky!
Mellow environment. Huge sushi bar area to sit and watch the chefs at work. Separate bar area to chill and have a cocktail.
All the rolls were really good. Unfortunately they were out of the green mussels, and something else my table ordered, which kind of sucks, but it was the end of the night so I'll chalk it up to needing to dine earlier in the evening if we want to eat everything that is listed on the menu.
I also ordered a roll that was supposed to have a chili topping and apparently they were out of that as well, so they used a sweet/ sour chili mix they threw together and I hate sweet, so another disappointment.
But, that said, everything else we ordered was fresh and original. The service was great. I would definitely go back to try more items and hopefully, get my green mussels.
Must try the Derby Roll. Cute and delicious.
This Sapporo, located on 4th Street, just south of 4th Street Live is an awesome place to relax and enjoy sushi. They have probably my favorite happy hour in Louisville. From 5 to 6:30 every day, you can get $2 domestic beers, $4 Sapporo's (large size), $2 sakes, and several food items, including sushi rolls for $4-$5. Even outside of happy hour, the prices are reasonable.
My favorite feature of Sapporo is the outside patio. It is a great place to sit and watch people walk down 4th street while you enjoy a Sapporo and some sushi. The waiters are also super nice here, even though the restaurant does get a little backed up when its crowded. I wouldn't go so far to say Sapporo has the best sushi in the city, but it is consistently tasty. As mentioned though, I love the atmosphere here and think it is the best-looking sushi restaurant in the city.
Sapporo on 4th street is truly a nice semi-hidden downtown gem that makes a great partner to the Louisville Palace for an unforgettable night.
First, they should update their information to indicate that they are in fact open for lunch.
Today's lunch was pretty good, although a bit expensive. The bento boxes are a great value for a lunch meal. But I wanted to try some of their sushi. It was pretty good, but again quite pricy.
Our waiter was friendly but bumbling a little. He made sure to tell us several times that this was his first time working at this location, that he usually works at their Bardstown Rd. location. .
So, all in all, a tasty filling meal, but more that I would have like to have spent. Next time I'll stick to a bento box and wait to get my sushi fix elsewhere.
I stopped in for the lunch special, $10 for Sushi/Shashimi or Bento Box or Habachi.
Great value. Â Wonderful decor, great service.
I had the sushi lunch special with some a la carte items with it, all VERY good, miso soup to start was light and fresh.
This is a must visit place with exactly what I want in a lunch stop.
Eager to come back for evening happy hour, $5 martinis and $3-$5 sushi rolls.
I don't care for the Sapporo on Bardstown Road--it's always been too club-y and crowded for my taste--so I was skeptical before I ate at the downtown location for the first time. This Sapporo is completely different. First off, it's much larger, and there are no teppanyaki tables, so you don't have to listen to kids screaming and people clapping all around you.
Other than the improved ambiance, it's the specials at the Fourth Street Sapporo that make this place amazing. You can get 2 giant rolls or a bento box for lunch for only $10. If you don't work downtown, stop by early in the evening for happy hour and get several rolls and appetizers for less than $5 each.
The sushi is good. I wouldn't say it's the best in town, but it's certainly in my top 3. But for the lunch/happy hour price, it might be the best around.
I went to lunch at Sapporo with some colleagues on 1/13/12. The only table they had available was a two-top, so we sat at the sushi bar. We asked to make sure we would be able to order from the regular menu if we sat there, and were told we could.
Unfortunately, we were not told to place our order with the sushi chefs. We waited a few minutes before the hostess who seated us asked if we wanted drinks. After about 5 minutes, we still had no drinks, and no server had yet visited us. When she brought us our drinks, we asked and were told to order from the chefs.
The sushi chefs were very friendly confirmed our orders to make sure they had it correct. But after almost 40 minutes of waiting for our bento boxes, one member of our party had to leave because he had to be back at the office. It was almost 10 more minutes before our meals finally arrived.
I had to ask for a refill, and nobody checked once to make sure everything was okay. I was halfway through my bento box before someone cleared away the bowls from the salads we had 1/2 an hour earlier. We waited at least 4 or 5 minutes for a server to walk by so we could ask for our check, and then another 10 minutes passed before we got them. The party next to us at the bar also had to ask for their meals to go, because they couldn't take any longer for lunch, either.
I believe this was unusual, because the waiter who brought our check seemed stressed, and even made a point of telling us not to worry about a tip. I've been here other occasions, and never had slow service, but I've never been there during lunch rush, so I don't know if this is typical.
Quick take: The prices are fair, the food is good, and the staff is very friendly. But, if it  takes an hour and a half for lunch, that's not going to work for most downtown lunch patrons.
The happy hour is AMAZING, the sushi has always been impeccably fresh, and I love that it is downtown but not quite in the touristy 4th street live area. I'm going to call it: 4th Street Not Live. Okay, so the name needs work. It is about a block or so south of all the craziness and there are a few awesome bars/restaurants that are nice, fun, chill and a bit more local. This is my fave.
First off, I loooove sushi. But I feel it is hard to get 5 stars on sushi as it needs to be well priced, tasty/fresh, and a cool vibe. This is it for me. Until 6:30 M-F they have this completely rockin - like rock your face off awesome happy hour. Cheap wines, $5 martini special, and a ton of $3-5 options. They aren't bringing you 4 measly pieces when you order rolls either. It is the same order as at dinner. They have the best California roll I've had (they aren't my favorite since they are usually the cheap crap, I mean crab, but here it is more like the Dynamite type roll minus the spicy). The coconut shrimp app is either 4 or 5 bucks and perfection. They are massive shrimps, nicely breaded for the sweetness, but perfectly crunchy with this awesome orange sauce to dip them in. I get it every time.
Also, some of the best seaweed salad in town, only 3 bucks if I recall correctly.
If I ever have guests in town mid-week or early on a Friday, it is a great place to introduce them to the city, show them the lovely Brown Hotel and then just cruise by for them to see the entertainment of the next block up. Also, a hell of a great start to a ladies night. I'm just saying. Serve me up some sushi and I'll take the fresh fish at Sapporo along with it. You know, since sushi is actually rice.
I don't eat sushi.
At least, I thought I didn't.
I may have changed my mind.
I found myself in Sapporo after a job interview one afternoon. I had the house salad to start--I don't know what they put in it but it tastes totally refresting. Albeit, a little watery, but sweet, pleasing to the palate. Nice.
Upon encouragement from my lunchmates, I also ordered a roll of COOKED sushi. My previous experiences with raw sushi ended up with me embarassingly appearing that I might explode and then spitting it into a napkin...It was best I got something not so adventurous. I got the Cajun roll, which was a medium-spicy to me, but apparently a higher-spicy to the others. I thought it was heaven.
So, I left with a confidence that I could do it again. A few weeks later, I brought my husband, who never thought in a million years that I would be going out with him for sushi. His sushi cravings had previously been met on business trips away from me only! And I got a little more adventurous. I had the Cajun roll again and I tried a couple of others with my husband that were--gasp--a little more authentic. And I didn't hate it! Score for Sapporo!
The only reason I didn't give Sapporo 5 stars is that sushi still really isn't my thing. I can't speak to the authenticity of the rolls but I can say that the service was decent (maybe a little slower at dinner than I would have liked), the atmosphere was kinda romantice (at dinner, not noisy lunch) and I had a good time.
Well.
I always trusted Sapporo to have high quality food and good service, but apparently that doesn't apply to their downtown location.
I ordered the shrimp soba noodles. I'm currently on a diet (for serious health reasons) that restricts my intake of certain foods, including wheat flour. Soba noodles are supposed to be made with buckwheat, which has no relation to wheat and is fine for me to eat.
Well, I got my food, took a few bites and realized that what I was served was regular wheat noodles.
Now, this wasn't a life or death situation for me, but I felt that I should express that what I got wasn't what I thought I ordered.
I waited for him to return to check on our table.
Over 15 minutes went by with no return to the table so I went to the restroom. When I returned, the check had been delivered to my boyfriend. When the server came to drop the change, I told him the issue.
He seemed to get the gist of what I was saying and said he'd ask the kitchen.
He came back and said that he "couldn't find a wrapper" and that the kitchen said that they were "regular soba noodles and therefore would be made with wheat"
Now, I looked at the menu and I realized it does in fact say yakisoba, which I understand is different from soba, but the description on the menu says soba noodles, so I thought I would be getting those.
Regardless of my understanding of the menu, the response that I got was so hostile and unnecessary that it warrants this review. The server told me that there was "nothing he could do" and that it would be coming out of "my pocket or yours" (his words) so I told him I guessed it would be mine.
After I got over the shock of being disrespected in this manner, I asked to speak to a manager about the issue when the server brought back the change. He brusquely said "yeah, he's at the bar." I asked his name, was told and the server walked away.
I went to the bar and spoke to the "manager" who it turns out was not a manager, but a bartender. Or at least that's what he said. He was very nice and apologized for what happened, but apparently had no authority to do anything but apologize.
By the way, the actual food I got was sickeningly sweet and salty, with no redeeming depth of flavor or good quality to it. The shrimp were ok, everything else had the flavor of take-out Chinese. Also not something I expect from Sapporo.
Pretty sad situation.
Went here for an early dinner before seeing a show at the Kentucky Center. We were pleased to see that they had some great deals on food and drinks for $3, $4, and $5 at happy hour and decided to take advantage of some.
From the $3 section we ordered a seaweed salad, edamame, and gyoza. The seaweed salad was the highlight of the night, and the best I've had. The edamame and gyoza were very good too.
We got an order of Sea Bass and on order of Uni Nigiri. The sea bass was very fresh and delicious. It was our first time having uni, and we usually will eat and enjoy any food that is well-prepared, especially seafood, but it just wasn't for us.
We also ordered 2 special sushi rolls from the somewhat limited selection (Big Mouth and Chili Tai), and one happened to be on the $5 menu without us realizing it. Both were good, but we would try others next time.
Great deals all around, we will definitely be back to make another meal of the small plates specials.
