Now that I'm in my 30's, my definition of going out as changed drastically. I still enjoy conversing over drinks and getting all dolled up. What I don't enjoy is crowded bars with freshly minted 21 year olds bumping and grinding against me and spilling beer down my back. As my good friend Roger Murtaugh would say, "I'm getting too old for this sh..." I just want to go out and catch up with friends somewhere other than our couches once in awhile. Away from babies, husbands, boyfriends, pets, etc.

We picked Screwtop because it was long on my Places to Check Out list. I was not disappointed. We arrived around 7 on a Saturday night without reservations. I was a little surprised at how small the bar actually is but it was buzzing. We were able to snag the end of an empty community table. Our server was quick to greet us and was so helpful when we weren't sure what to order. He brought out some samples to taste as well.

I should probably note that I've never been to a dedicated wine bar. This was pretty fancy for me, yet the atmosphere was casual and the ambiance was buzzing. I loved it. In lieu of an actual dinner, my friends and I decided to split 3 appetizers. If we wanted to stay, we'd order more, but we found the appetizers filled us up pretty well.

The food was amazing and the wine paired perfectly with them, thanks to our server.

We had a great time, the service was impeccable, the atmosphere was vibrant and cool. It was a perfect way to spend girls' night out. I will definitely be a repeat customer.

We love Screwtop. This locally owned and operated wine bar/restaurant is a shining star of the community. As a local resident, it's so refreshing to have a unpretentious, fun, establishment that has developed it's own unique charm. How many times my lady and I have witnessed first dates here, couples laughing together while sharing bottles of wine.

The food is amazingly tasty, also. I love their simple yet elevated and refined grilled cheese sandwich. Oozing with 3 cheezes, it's pressed down and presented crunchy and warm with a lovely salad and tomato soup. It's my go to even in the summer time but perfect for cold, wintry nights.

We recommend this restaurant to all of our friends when seeking a low-key establishment, and in particular, friends that are wine aficionados.

I've only been here for lunch during work, but I love the buffaloaf lunch special.  It's a half sandwich with a choice of soup or salad.  I really like getting the tomato soup with it.  It's so satisfying it's hard to try something else on the menu.  Price is reasonable for $8.99.

I'll have to come back another time to actually enjoy the wine.

Upping my review to 4 stars, considering I ended up going back 3 days later and buying two more bottles of the semi-dry Riesling. Love places where I discover new wines. I'll have to go back and see if I can find another gem or two.

This place has amazing wine and lots of choices! And I can almost always get a seat at the bar - 4 stars for the wine!

The service is supurb here! 5 stars for the service!

The food is scrumptious, but it is really tough for 1 person to eat here alone. I love the sliders! and the mini sandwhiches but I can't eat 4... I'm not allowed to buy 1 or 2 so I'm told.  It's great for sharing, but not for 1 person.  So when I'm alone I typically get cheese plates (which are wonderful).

This is place is amazing. Every time. I have lived in arlington for awhile and have been going here for years. I have never had service or bad food or bad wine for that matter!!!! It's worth the wait if they're busy!

Date night at Screwtop was really fun. We thoroughly enjoyed the high quality and tasteful selection of wines, snacks, and entrees. The selection of wines and fights of wine were refined and really really tasty. I'm no aficionado or expert on wines, but I'm no slouch either. Kudos to whoever selected the wines.

We ordered a flight of reds and followed it up with a bottle from the wine we liked 'second best' from the flight (A Paso Robles blend called Troublemaker). The 'first best' bottle was $80 and although it was tempting, the $35 price tag of still excellent Troublemaker was a better choice. By the way, on Wednesday's, if you order a bottle from the featured flights, its $12 off the listed price.

We followed up with a cheese plate and the pulled pork nachos. Both were incredibly flavorful. For the record, the roasted tomato salsa served with the nachos is the best salsa I've found in the DC area. Thanks for the second helping!

There are two reasons I am giving a four star instead of a five. First, while the staff was REALLY fast, friendly, and fun, they weren't very expressive about the wines and cheeses. Usually at a wine bar you sort of expect to hear lavish mouthwatering descriptions of the wineries and regions who produce the amazing food.

Second, I felt the environment/ambiance was sort of stale and institutional. I'm aware it is located under the uber modern sheek Zoso, but a little more color, lighting, art, or texture would give the space more depth and feel more cozy and less 'diner/deli counter'.

I absolutely love this place! Such a great wine bar in Clarendon, as well as nice wine and cheese shop. The flights of wine are awesome to get you started, and like how the menu suggests pairings with food. I literally would just go there for a cheese and charcuterie plate with wine, because that is filling enough! Bucheron goat cheese is amazing. Servers are very knowledgeable. I wish this place was bigger! They don't take reservations unless for parties of 6 or more..  limited space available. Usually you just grab a glass of wine and wait for a table to open up. Great to go with girlfriends and catch up over great food and wine. Huge Fan!! Can't wait to try the updated menu. Love!!!

Been here a few times, and had a variety of their wines.  I've rarely been disappointed.  Atmosphere is good and the wait staff always attentive.  If I lived within walking distance, I'd be a regular.

I've been less than impressed with the food.  I've tried a few of their sandwiches, and never really been wowed.  They certainly weren't bad, but weren't awesome either.  I'd suggest just sticking to cheese and charcuterie, and get more substantive food elsewhere.  GF, however, does very much enjoy their mac n' cheese, though she says she'd still prefer cheesetique.

I love this place. Walk in and you get stinky cheese smell. While it's a little off-putting at first, how can you hate a place that carries stinky cheese: One of the best things to eat in the whole world? If you want to drink, they have some benches set up European style (i.e., be prepared to sit w/ some other people unless you're hanging w/ 8 people so you can fill the whole table). Love sitting European style - great way to meet new people that also like to drink wine. Most people that like to drink wine are awesome, of course.

The dining area has a bunch of 4-tops, and the staff was really nice. The wine list is definitely solid (okay, I know, it's a wine shop so it should be - but I'm telling you sometimes wine shops have a crappy selection). Overall great experience and I'd definitely go back if I lived in the area. Highly suggest checking this place out.

Great place that is much more chill for the slightly more mature crowd who is not trying to get it so hard at Ri Ra and Spyder Kelly's. You sit amongst the wine stacks and the cheese coolers and order by the glass or one of their recommended flights. My friends and I only had drinks here, but I want to go back for some cheese and meats. I think my rating will only go up then.

Big ups for also having some little touches that would make a party great (ladies read this) They have hibiscus flowers for sale that you can put in champagne glasses that will blossom and open and other stuff like that to truly add something extra to your party.

The challenge is getting a seat on a Friday as it is first come first serve and sometimes people sit on tables for quite some time. They also close a little early as well so this is not your all night spot.

A little slice of heaven on earth. Whether you like red or white, ask the server to give you a flight of wine and a flight of cheese and pair the two, (or get 2x) and enjoy. Wine classes, wine club and no wine snobs work here.  A wine shop by the people for the people (I stole that from some beer tag line I'm sure).

Also get the truffle popcorn...it's addicting.

I really like the wine selection that they had here. The artichoke bread that I ordered here was okay but nothing to write home about. The waitress was really friendly and my friends and I got our drinks pretty quickly we ordered it. The vibe of the place is really cool and its a good place to have a low key night. We all had a great time here.

Screwtop is single-handedly responsible for my addiction to wine. Like really good wine. The kind from small and distant artisan producers around the world. No one else in Arlington even comes close.

The only reason this place isn't a 5-star is because they close a little early on the weekends. PLEEEASE stay open til midnight?

And here's a little tip: like them on Facebook! They do a solid job posting food and drink specials, announcements, and pretty much everything else in between. They do social media the right way... fun, informative, and not annoying. :)

If you can get a seat, I love it here!  BF and I have wandered by and if by chance there's a spot at the bar, will go in.  I love the vast wine selection and have tried a few new ones.  We tried the goat cheese app last time and it was good.  I've also gotten a salad with nuts and berries that was fantastic!  All in all it's a little pricey, but an awesome little spot and we'll definitely be back.

I have been to Screwtop twice- both times for drinks and cheese. I'm not a huge wine drinker, but the waitress really knew her stuff and was really sweet about recommending different whites to me. Their selection was great- of both wine and cheese. I know this of wine because I was with my dad, who is the pickiest wine drinker imaginable.

The cheese- we had cheddar and brie- was fantastic and came on a rustic wooden plate with a delicious fig jam. Since I tend to go for beers- the next time I went I got a Lagunitas, but they had so many other great options, such as my favorite 21st Amendment, any beer drinker would love Screwtop.

The atmosphere is really really inviting, friendly, edgy and open. Perfect for meeting friends for a drink or bite to eat. Great for young people too. They have big, wooden communal tables, a bar and smaller tables so whether you're in a big group or just one person, Screwtop is perfect! A hidden gem at the end of Fillmore, that's for sure. And free parking in the garage! Love it.

I love this place!  Good wine and great food.  It's the best place to catch up w/ girlfriends and have a bite to eat.  I just joined their Wine Club also.  This place is not that big so if you are a big group, plan accordingly.

I've eaten here twice for lunch, once for dinner, once for drinks. One of the times I went for lunch was with a big group.

My advise for group gatherings is -- this is NOT the place.

For whatever reason, they staffed a "new girl" as our waitress for a group of 17.  They had us sitting on the two benches as well as a separate table that seated 4. It was a tight squeeze. Although we called ahead and they were aware that we had a large group, they still managed only to have 1 waitress helping us and 3 available ones standing around waiting for other customers for the lunch rush. Not pleasant.

The one time I came here just "for drinks" my friend and I got a weird item on the menu.. bacon bruschetta. Not the best. Probably why it's not on the menu anymore. The truffle popcorn is really good, but they make it there so it takes time for them to refill it.  I've also eaten the pumpkin lasagna (seasonal special) which was good. The Buffaloaf is my all time favorite. The Bacon Vinaigrette is delicious but I prefer the Poblano vinaigrette as the buffaloaf already has bacon in it. Additionally, the tomato bisque is divine.

The drinks are decently priced too. Specialty beers are about $6 for non happy hour. The glasses of wine are moderately priced.  Can't beat that!

Great hidden spot for those wanting a more relaxed atmosphere to enjoy some great wine and ambiance.

So not gonna lie, the prices are a little high on the wine, but that's OK here. The selection is enough to get you to try new tastes from around the world, and the staff is knowledgeable enough to be able to suggest wines you may like based upon your preferences. I got a glass of chardonnay that was on special and then tried my server's suggestion of a white cabernet, which was really clean.

They have a great selection of food available as well - some of the dishes looked and sounded great. One thing that I really like is their complimentary truffled popcorn. Yes. It is that good. Yes, I know truffled anything is a gimmick, but it tastes delicious and is on the house.

Will be back here to try more things next time!

Screwtop is by far my favorite wine bar! Conveniently locted within blocks of the Clarendon Metro and nearby to other great restaurants, bars and shopping, this wine bar has a lot to offer! Many different wines from around the world! if you're not sure the waiter/waitresses can assist you. They also have flights (red and white) that are changed out quite often, to give people something new. Their flights include 3 glasses or either all reds or all whites and they each tell you where the wine came from, how much the bottle costs and what the flavors are in the wine. Flights are reasonable priced too.

For food I HIGHLY recommend the baked goat cheese!! This will feed at least 4 four people easily and very addictive! All of their food is great but you cannot go wrong with their baked goat.

You can become a member and receive two bottle of wine a month along with a cheese and meat and they have tastings that are free. Screwtop is a great place for a date or girls night out!

2.5, I went here on a date and while the service was attentive and the wine was adequate, the space felt a little cramped and uncomfortable. And no that just wasn't due to the date!

I do think they could work on decorating the place to be a little more swanky and lush like a wine bar should be. For the price, the wine also wasn't all that impressive. Considering that this is a wine bar in VA with local wineries only a 1.5hr down 66, I expected a little more.

I live in Rosslyn and I still wouldn't go out of my way to go to ScrewTop. Especially not with Oby Lee, a more innovative and well designed option, just a short walk away.

I'm a big fan of wine bars so I decided to check this place out with a friend.  Ample selection of wine but the Happy Hour options are fairly limited and still cost $6.

Where ScrewTop really shines is the cheese pairing.  For $17 you can choose 3 of their cheeses to go with your wine.  We really enjoyed the Jalapeno, the Manchengo and the Irish Whiskey Cheddar.   Of those three, the Jalepeno was my favorite - not overpowering but with a hint of fire to make it super tasty.

Get here early because they fill up fast!

I love, love, love this place. In my four short months of living in the D.C. area, I have been to ScrewTop three times. Excellent wine selection (the Petit Petite is my favorite) and the appetizers are out of this world. The baked goat cheese rolled in herbs and served with plum chutney is not to be missed. The bison burger sliders are juicy and taste sensational.

The atmosphere is just right; intimate and perfect for a get-together with friends or a date. Like others have said, I've been avoiding writing a review on ScrewTop in fear of others finding out about this great place!

I'm in love with Screwtop....so in love that I have hesitated to write a review for months in fear more people would find out how awesome it is!

My first visit I met up ith a friend for cheese, wine, and conversation outside.  The next time I met another friend and we did wine and entrees.  Recently I've started having lunch here occasionally (dos tacos and tomato basil soup -- so freakin good).  It's so yummy I will actually make a special trip over and eat lunch by myself...

Every time I've been to Screwtop the food has been delicious and the service friendly and quick (but not rushed).  The inside is cozy and I like being able to eat outside when it's nice out.  If you haven't checked this place out yet you should!

Cozy little wine bar conveniently located  just footsteps from our place...I'm in!  Screwtop offers sips, pours, wine flights, and even bottles of a variety of wines.  We have been here a few times now to grab some drinks, but haven't had the opportunity to dine in yet.  I can say that both the appetizers we ordered were very good, a cheese plate & bacon wrapped dates.

They have a couple of family-style tables that can accommodate larger parties, several other tables for parties of 4 or smaller, and even a few outdoor tables available.  My only gripe about the place is that there is not a lot of space between the bar area and the dining tables, therefore, if the place starts getting crowded and all of the 6-8 bar stools are already spoken for it really doesn't leave you any place to stand.

A part of me would like to see them expand this place, however, it might just lose a little bit of it's personality and charm, so I'm just hoping no one else finds out about this gem.  Hmmmm, maybe I should rethink my 5 star review then ; )

I can't say enough good things about Screwtop. Have eaten there plenty of times, and the food is always SO good - the toked goat, the grilled cheese + tomato soup, salads...it's all good.  The wine pairing suggestions are fabulous, and I love that I can get some unusual wines in their shop. The one time the waitress didn't get our order correctly, the manager/owner (sorry - not sure which!) brought us a small cheese platter to tide us over while it was remade.

A friend gave me the amazing gift of a wine club membership, and so far, the selections are interesting and varied, and I love that I get some cheese to pair with it!

Only bad part - I can't walk to it! Guess that's my fault...

I stopped here for lunch one day while working from home. I'm a member of their wine club but haven't ate much there.

The cilantro chicken salad wrap was pretty good, it came with a side so i figured a nice cold gazpacho would hit the spot. It did much more than that and truly stole the show!  The avocado gazpacho was absolutely incredible! I'm not even a big fan of avocado but it was perfect for a warm 95+ degree day.

Washed it down with a nice light chilled rose since it was entirely too hot for a red which is my normal preference.

Definitely my favorite wine bar by far now...

I'm giving this place five stars because this is the first wine bar that I've fallen in love
with. I just found out about Screwtop and Green Pig about a month ago and these have quickly become two of my favorite places in Clarendon. They are a nice escape
from some of the annoying bars that are located on the Clarendon strip.

The service at this place is five stars alone. Everyone I've come across is super friendly and eager to help give food and wine suggestions. They have my now favorite bottle of wine which is the Red Dream(somewhat similar to a Moscato). It's soooo good. For food, I have only had their Cuban sandwich and two soups(tomato and carrot).

Their Cuban sandwich is so yummy. The combination of pork shoulder, ham, and pickles is mouth watering. It lived up to the high expectations I have when I order a Cuban. Their tomato and carrot soups were also something to rave about. They also give out a complimentary cup of popcorn(also yummy).

My friend ordered their mac and cheese trio and I liked their truffle and spicy ones. I've never been a huge fan of blue cheese so I wasn't much of a fan of that one. I can't say anything about their desserts but I definitely plan on trying them when I come back another time. :)

Late-Afternoon on Sunday's for some Wine and Cheese in Clarendon: Only at ScrewTop

Stopped in at ST around 6p on a gorgeous Sunday night to cap off a great weekend. We got a table outside on their sidewalk patio area. The traffic on the sidewalk and the street was unnoticeable.

We immediately ordered a few white wine flights, which were on 'special' for the evening. Great prices for quality wine.

After enjoying the flights, we decided to try out one of ST's Small Plates, which was called:
Baked Goat for $13.50... Warm chevre topped with herbs de Provence, served with toasted baguette and spicy plum chutney. Enough for 3!

We paired it with a couple nice bottles of Babbo Prosecco, delicious!!!

I will be joining their Wine Club next month. I recommend ST to ALL wine lovers and to a small group of friends who want to enjoy a few hours of relaxing while getting a little "buzz: on. :)

    Have fun!

3.75 stars.  Ever since I read Bassey E's one "negative" about Screwtop, I knew that I had to go here.  Nearly two years later, that finally happened.

Screwtop is a fun, casual, affordable neighborhood wine shop.  What it lacks in decorative charm, it makes up for in reasonably priced wine and rather solid food.  It is basically the Pound the Hill of Clarendon.

We went with the Chilean red wine flight ($13) which comprised of three wines focusing on an array of fruit flavors.  All but one sported a relatively high acidity.  The pours were supposed to be 1/2 glass pours, and it appears they might have been slightly more generous than that with us.  Thank you Screwtop!

For food, we tried the mac-n-cheese trio and the meatloaf sandwich.  Both were pretty good.  The best of the mac-n-cheese surprisingly was the blue cheese concoction followed by the spicy goat cheese mac.  The truffle mac was rather bland in comparison.  As for the meatloaf sandwich, we enjoyed it but I thought that the sun-dried tomatoes probably played a bit too prominent a role.

If I lived in this neighborhood, I would probably go here at least twice every week.  If I was in Northern Virginia for something other than steak, burgers, pho, or a University of Texas football game, this would be my selection every time.

Screw-top is all that!  It was very similar to a wine shop/bar/restaurant in SF's ferry building. It had atmosphere, and a sense of cool without any pretension. For example we ordered a cheese flight, and after being told the recommended wine pairings (all white), I asked about red wine, and without judgement the server made a suggestion, poured several tastes and allowed me to choose. I know wine, I just don't buy into the snobby wine culture. So I was happy.

We ordered the Spanish cheese flight, the warm Chevre, the dates and a few glasses of Pinot noir. The cheese flight was good, not special but we like exciting slightly pungent and/or aged cheeses. The warm chevre was awesome and very generous. The dates were also very good. I like this place, just plz don't tell too many ppl.

My only problem with Screwtop is that it is not large enough to accommodate my party sometimes.

Of course, if it were bigger that might ruin it.

Others have said it: the wine list is great and varied and not super-marked up. The cheeses are wonderful. The servers are knowledgeable about both.

If only I could get a seat whenever I wanted one!

I feel completely awful giving ScrewTop a 3.5/4 but I keep going back because I love their wine and they have good people serving!

Shawn is my favorite "winetendar"/server who's always right on in his recommendations based on my requests (full bodied, something new, fruit forward, dry, exc).  Accompanying your wine they usually bring out truffle popcorn (I'm a sucker for anything with truffles) so it's a nice unique touch.

The food is good however I find the cheese plates to be a little bare given that it is a wine bar.  A large wood block with 3 varieties of cheeses and/or charcuterie is the whole presentation.  Honey, turffled popcorn, almonds, or olives can be added for an additional charge however I enjoy a small amount of fresh fruit accompanying as an added garnish.

Location is nice in that it's tucked away from the main street however I think it's gotten much more popular than they had expected so they tend to have a line since the seating area is small.  Lines are a sign of happy return customers so they are definitely doing something right.

    Wine Rating : Awesome!

    Atmosphere : Good but small
Service: Good  (Ask for Shawn, he rocks!)
    Food: Ok
    Price: Good
Overall experience: Areas of improvement but I keep going back for the wine and all of the great servers!!

Stopped in for a glass of wine with a friend on a recent weeknight. The service was prompt and friendly and the space is sleek, but intimate.  Something about the color scheme is really inviting.

I admit, I would have liked to see a few more cheap glasses on the menu. (If Trader Joe's can sell a bottle for $3.99, can't you get a glass anywhere for $5?)

But, we ordered two different wines, served in generously sized glasses, and a cheese plate. The server also brought us some delicious truffle-popcorn - on the house - a nice touch.

Seems like the perfect place to start or end an evening out in Clarendon.

    I will be back.

ScrewTop is easily one of Arlington's upcoming crown jewels.  Unfortunately, it's tucked away in a part of town where you'd never even notice it.

The negatives:  Too many young "sexy and the city" type pregaming before slutting it up at Spider Kellys or whatever.

The positives:   A knowledgeable staff that is friendly and professional.  I think our bartenders name was Sean (or Shawn) and not only did he do the perfect amount of checking in (you know, not trying to but into our conversation but stopping by every now and again to make sure we enjoyed our selection and make recommendations), but he was able to explain just about EVERYTHING they had on the menu and gave honest opinions about things.

I think I'd head to ScrewTop on a weeknight Mon-Wednesday, when hopefully it will be less crowded with dumb slores.

New low-key wine bar in clarendon.

This place was relaxing and not pretentious at all. Even if you don't know wine, cheese or even meat, just sit down and ask any staff for their suggestion.

The chef loves pork. Pork was everywhere..., bowl, statue, toy, plate and of course on the menu.

My friend had 'We dig the pork' sandwich and said the pork-meat was great.

My french toast was good but very small portion... Pudding-like texture inside and crunch-panini texture outside=Good!! but I would just get bread-pudding instead. After eating two thin slices of french toast, I needed to get something additional at other place.

I won't go back for brunch but will return for a glass of wine and other things to nibble when I'm in clarendon.

    Friendly service.

ScrewTop - I hardly know her!  Ha, okay that joke doesn't really work. But, what DOES work is this new addition to the Clarendon neighborhood.  On my visit to ScrewTop, the wine bar was bustling - it's the perfect place to meet up with friends - not too small, not too large - but JUST the right atmosphere.  The wine list is varied without being overwhelming, with a number of different price points.

As for the eats, I sampled the grilled cheese for two (not by myself, thankyouverymuch), which was a fantastic play on tradition and cut into sweet heart shapes. (See what I did there?)  Being somewhat of a glutton - I also went for a cheese plate.  Usually, I find cheese plates pretty stingy - but ScrewTop had generous portions.  Even working on it with a friend I am having leftover cheese for lunch today!

The service was attentive and even though it was busy, things flowed very smoothly.  This is a great addition to the Clarendon corridor and I'm only sad that I don't live closer, so I can pop in more frequently!

ScrewTop is a welcome addition to the Clarendon neighborhood. They are a short walk from the metro station and they have a free parking garage (to the left of the building).

We went on New Years Eve so they offered a flight of three champagnes for $16. They were very tasty, but I was disappointed that only one was on the regular menu (they had bottles of all three in the shop, but I'm not sure if that was only for the occasion). Boyfriend had the IPA on tap, which was $5.

We also ordered bacon covered dates stuffed with bleu cheese and grilled cheese sliders (only two came in the order, but they were slightly larger than a burger slider). The dates were very tasty, slightly sweet. The balsamic glaze was very tasty and I wish they had given us a bit more. The grilled cheese was pressed in a panini press and served with a delicious creamy tomato soup as a dipping sauce.

It took a little while for the waitress to stop at table (it's seat yourself), but after that the service wasn't quite as slow. We'll be back to ScrewTop. I'm looking forward to trying the cheese and charcuterie platters!

Checked this place out last night and I am already looking forward to going back.  I think the biggest problem is it's going to be too crowded for a while.

We hung out for a while with our group before we were able to snag seats at the bar.  They have a nice selection of wines as well as some good beers.  Everything we ate was fabulous.  They have interesting meat and cheese selections (wasabi gouda -- awesome) as well as the bacon wrapped dates, which were spectacular, and I had their mozzarella, tomato, pesto on ciabatta sandwich which was very tasty.  Everything was fresh and light and worked perfectly together.

The space is really cool.  High ceilings with exposed ductowork, large windows looking on to the street and simple tables and chairs.   The staff were on the ball and very friendly.

Overall it felt like a cool place that avoids seeming trendy and snobby.  It reminds me a bit of Spider Kelly's. A nice addition to the neighborhood.
