If you're reading this review, you're probably deciding on which Indian restaurant on Devon to dine at, or that you've chosen to eat at Urban India already and you want to feel confident in your decision by reading positive reviews.

Rest assured, Urban India is fantastic.

I have tried many an Indian restaurant on Devon. My favorite is Mysore Woodlands, but it's vegetarian. Sometimes I am mindful of my boyfriend's omnivorous needs and  seek other options. We saw Urban India opening up earlier this year where Gandhi India (which was god-awful) used to be. Urban India's purple sign in san serif font is hard to miss. I suggested that we try it and I am glad we did. We parked at the parking garage at Rockwell and Devon. It's reasonable at $2 for the first hour, then $1 after that. It's much easier than finding parking on the street.

We went on a Friday night around 6pm. It was empty. Okay, so maybe it wasn't a positive impression. After eating here though, this restaurant deserves to be busier! The service was prompt and the food came out quickly. The waiter was quiet, but polite. On the menu you'll find your favorites. We ordered Samosas, Paneer Tikka, Garlic Naan, Mutter Paneer, and Murg Malai Tikka (boneless chicken marinated in yogurt and spices).

    Here's the low-down:

Samosas - You get two large pieces stuffed full with potatoes and peas in a light, flaky crust.
Paneer Tikka - I haven't had this in a long time. Urban India's version was so flavorful! I gobbled it up. I wanted MORE! I recommend this was for vegetarians.
Garlic Naan - Both crispy and chewy. Non-greasy. It was perfect.
Mutter Paneer - I think they put too many peas in the sauce, otherwise it was good. They didn't skimp on the paneer. I hate it when Indian restaurants do that. The sauce had the right amount of spice and was not at all watery.
Murg Malai Tikka (based on David's opinion): It was tender, moist, and very flavorful. However. it was a little saltier than he would prefer.

Did I mention entrees INCLUDE RICE?! *screams* OH YEAH!

I don't have any reason to give them anything else than 5 stars. My boyfriend would disagree otherwise. I think he's being nitpicky. "The menu has too many pages", "It isn't the best Indian restaurant". I do agree with him that their prices are a little higher than other restaurants on Devon, but I've had really mediocre food elsewhere and would pay a buck or two more if it means getting the good stuff. I wouldn't deduct a star or even half a star for that.

    4.5 stars for food
    5 stars for service

Also, I realized a while ago that one should not just an ethnic restaurant by its clientele. During our visit, there were only non-Indian customers. Stop being such food snobs and try this place out!

Really good! I think this will be my new "go to" place on Devon. Everything we ordered was spot on and had tons of flavor. Especially noted was when I asked for my lamb vindaloo to be spicy and made "for real" and when it came out it actually was! Super flavor and the lamb meat was really lean and good quality. Recommended for sure.

It's true: I am a novice when it comes to Indian food. But I really loved Urban India. LOVED IT! I have cravings for it now. I must have more!

This is actually my second experience eating Indian food. The first time I had it, someone at my former job had ordered it for the whole department. I tried it, but it was WAY too spicy for my tastes. I hadn't had it since then, but my husband suggested it after he had it on a business trip. After reading over some reviews online, we decided to give Urban India a try. I'm really glad we did!

Here's a breakdown of the restaurant:

Decor ~ This place is really cozy and intimate. There's low lighting, plenty of booths, lots of bold colors. Very romantic!

BYOB ~ Yes! I love BYOB places! Our waiter brought us wine glasses for our Cabernet right when we got there, but for some reason he didn't bring us the bottle opener at the same time. We had to ask for it, but that was really the only negative of the night.

Appetizers ~ While we didn't order appetizers off the menu, they do give you some kind of bread (at least when you order in). It's very light and crispy and served with two different sauces, one red and one green. The green one is very spicy, but the red one is more mild.

Food ~ My husband and I shared three dishes: Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Tikka Masala and Matar Paneer. We had all three prepared with mild spices, and I'm really glad we did that because I can't imagine what their regular spice levels are. Their food is PACKED with flavor. The chicken was definitely my favorite. I have dreams about this dish. The Matar Paneer was also really good. It's a vegetarian dish with cheese cubes, peas and tomatoes. Delish. The lamb dish was a little bit too spicy for me to enjoy, so my husband ate most of that one. Overall, the flavors in all three were spot-on. They came with rice, and we also got a couple orders of naan bread to sop up all the delicious sauce. Great meal! We actually had some of each dish left over, and we ate it for breakfast the next morning. It was that good!

Dessert ~ For dessert, we each got a mango Lassi, which is a traditional yogurt drink. It was really tasty and hit the spot after our meal.

Service ~ Our waiter was really good. He was very nice and attentive.

Bathrooms ~ There's really only one stall in the women's restroom, but it was very spacious and clean. There's a pretty mosaic on the floor and walls. And there's a black toilet. Don't see many of those!

This place is fantastic. Like I said, I am very new to Indian food, but I already want to go back. It's just so tasty, and the flavors are spot-on. Highly recommend!

Was craving for some Indian food , so came here with a friend. Had the lunch buffet. The buffet had like 6-8 items plus tandoori chicken and naan bread. The food was well done, except the flavorless tandoori chicken...I just wished they had more variety though. Price was $10.95 plus tax and tip for lunch and additional cost for drinks.

The service was fine, but the chicken tikka masala tastes like nacho cheese.

    Sooo Good!

This place is a new venture by the people who run Uruswati (one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Chicago). Unlike, Uruswati, this place only serves north Indian food. This place is not yet as popular as most other places on Devon because the night that we went, me n hubby were their only customers to dine in. In all fairness, it was a rainy weeknight, so most restaurants were empty. The service was friendly. We looked at the menu while munching on crispy papadum and chutney that were complimentary. We got the grilled n marinated veggies n paneer, Paneer makhni with Onion kulcha and a dhal makhni. The food was delicious and Urban India will be my go-to place for authentic north Indian food.

WOW this place is amazing. My friend had heard good things about it so we stopped in for lunch/dinner. Come hungry because portions are huge and well priced. Get coffee here, I seriously think it's one of the best I've had which was surprising. We ordered a few dishes between the three of us which was more than enough. Not sure exactly what but standouts were the dark meat chicken dish and the chicken tikka I had which was seriously half a grilled chicken coated in the perfect amount of spice. Naan was just ok but I think that's because we got the plain one. Not to be missed.

Ever wondered what it is like to be in a hotel with no other guests around? I visited this place with my folks on a Monday without reading reviews and I wasn't disappointed completely. Since we were the only customers around, the service was pretty quick. I highly recommend the saag paneer and the kashmiri naan. The masala papad is a no-no. Service is decent and recommend this place instead of the other over hyped restaurants on Devon.

I tried the lunch buffet a couple of days ago. The appetizers (Samosa and Dosa) were cold as in most Indian buffets. In fact the dosa was stuck to the paper and I had a hard time removing it. The Naan and vegetable curries were tasty. Better than the curries that I've had in most Indian restaurants. The sambar was OK. Gulab jamun was hot and tasty although the syrup was watery. All in all , a decent option. As a vegetarian , my options were limited.

The curry is the best we've had. I had the veggie curry w/shirmp...it was sooo good i couldn't stop eating it!! The hot man with me...my bf got the coconut chicken curry in red sauce. He couldn't stop eating it too.

The service was not good. We ordered appetizers and the sever didn't fill our water on his own. We had to ask him 4 times to fill our water. We also had to ask for extra napkins and utensils. He didn't come back after the appetizers or entrees to see how we were doing. When the next shift server came we were treated like real life customers.

It's a little pricey for the location. There are dozens and dozens of similar restaurants in the area, don't compete by making the prices more expensive.

The decor looks like a 8year old painted it. They need to hire professionals to repaint the place. I don't know what the big curtain is doing on the back wall but it's tacky. The front tables were being used as glassware storage. It makes me question what the kitchen and coolers look like. Is there enough room for everything?

We will give the place another chance because like I said the curry was delicious!

Urban India my new stop for Indian food, It's owned by the same owners of Uru-Swati (my favorite Indian vegetarian restaurant on Devon Avenue). They have recently started a weekend buffet, which is excellent. I am usually not a fan of buffets, but they had such a tasty variety of fresh food to enjoy (onion utthapam with sambar, aloo gobi, chana masala, chicken tikka masala). If you decide to go here for dinner, I highly recommend the pakora kadi or anything you like. This is now my favorite non-vegetarian restaurant on Devon. Urban India...keep up the good work! DON'T FORGET IT'S BYOB too.

My new favorite restaurant on Devon (and across from Patels, for amazing ice cream!) Everything I've had here has been amazing, great food, huge portions at an affordable price, wonderful service, clean and swanky/romantic interior, lovely for dates.

I tried the other night to order food for delivery through Grub hub which I have done many times before and my order went through.  I was later contacted by the restaurant that they do not deliver that far.  I explained they have done is numerous times in the past but that did not seem to matter and I was eventually hung up on.  Urban India I will miss you.

Amazingly delicious.  A lot of the standard dishes (saag paneer, etc.) are really a step above what other places on the Devon strip order.  I get take out Indian on a regular basis and this is definitely my new favorite.  One down side is the price, as the dishes are 3-4 dollars more than other restaurants, but rices comes with it and the orders seem to be slightly larger than other places.  Can't wait to get it again.

Went today and got 3 vegetarian entrees and naan.  Channa marsala was perfect.  The matar paneer could was good but could have been a bit more spicy.  The tadka dal was also very good...but again...a bit more spicy would have been perfect.  Most Indian restaurants I have been to ask how spicy we would like it....and I am surprised they didn't inquire.  The garlic naan and onion naan were great.   I had a few diet cokes and the cans they brought out had dust all over them.  Overall, food was great.  Prices were very reasonable.  I intend to be back.

A great new option on Devon.

We've been thinking about trying out this new place on Devon for the past few months.  It's always a question of taking a chance on a new place or stick with the places we know and love?  That's usually where Yelp can step in and it did to the extent that the reviews for this place were good - although I was hoping for more of them.  So anyway, we took the plunge and were not disappointed at all.

First of all, you'll notice that UI has a clean sophisticated look.  You immediately feel like you're no longer on Devon.  Not that there's anything wrong with being on Devon, but after all these years you come to expect places that are a little bit... ummm... dingy?  UI is not that.

Then the food.  It was pretty good.  I liked the paneer makhani, the malai kofta, and dal makhani.  Someone we were with ordered baigan, which was just OK.  I would've have ordered that if it were up to me anyway.  The naan were fine and all.  We had more than enough food, though I would say the prices are probably just slightly on the higher end.  Given the ambiance, I'm not complaining.

So it wasn't perfect.  I think the service ended up being kind of slow.  In the beginning the waiter came to our table for our order right away.  We weren't ready and asked for a couple of minutes... then he just disappeared and didn't come back for what felt like ages.  Why one or the other?  :-)  After finally flagging him down we ordered, got the food, etc.  I think things were fine after that, except again nobody showed up for the check.  I guess we were also pretty engrossed in conversation, so not a huge deal.

Anyway, the other thing which is disappointing was that this place was empty.  I think one other table was occupied when we arrived and nobody else came in afterwards.  This was probably like 8:30pm on Sunday night.  Maybe that's why?  It's always a bit disconcerting when a restaurant is deserted like that.  I feel bad for the guys, because they seem to have done a decent job of putting this place together.  Hopefully more people will give them a shot after read this review.  Also, hopefully they can tighten up their service.

Looking forward to being back again.

Easily one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago--so affordable, delicious, great service, and BYOB...will be back!!!!

I decided to come here based on the good reviews despite others telling me to go elsewhere on the street. This would be my first time to Devon Ave. and I wanted to make sure it was well spent. I also was not in the mood for the dumpy//sketchy/unclean food establishments on this particular night, but probably because I was about to feast on Indian food. We also wanted a non-veg place, so I had to ensure I would be able to keep my food down.

The ambiance was perfect--it's not fancy at all even though others say so, it is just a bit nicer than the hole in the walls on the block. You can easily wear shorts and a tshirt here. You will feel happy that it smells nice and is updated. The bathrooms are very nice too.

The waiter was really awesome--never had water below half full, brought us lots of extra rice free of charge, and recommended great dishes. (chicken mak...something and lamb w/ spinach). Both were incredible. big portions too as we had some leftovers (guess that's typical with indian). We were stuffed!!! (also had beer though!)

Parking is free on side streets or you can pay on Devon. Don't be surprised if this street actually resembles India, as there is quite a bit of foot and car traffic/noises/and a bit of lawlessness, which is kinda funny. If you have not been to Devon you must go! And if you want delicious, great quality, and a more cleanly atmosphere, definitely try Urban India! Yum Yum

They recently offered a groupon for Urban India (not sure if it's still available), which is an affordable way to try their high quality delicious Indian cuisine. This is now my favorite non-vegetarian restaurant on Devon. Urban India...keep up the good work!

I'll start by saying that the food here is really pretty decent.  If it weren't for the horrible service, this place would be getting 3 or 4 stars.

Things started off badly right away.  They sat us down and we proceeded to wait at least 15 minutes for someone to take our order.  A server only came over when he saw we were looking around for someone.  To make it worse, while we were waiting, another table came in and was seated behind us.  Their order was taken long before ours.

After we ordered, we proceeded to wait some more.  Probably a good 30-45 minutes for our entrees.  The staff apologized about the wait to the table behind us and left us sitting there without a word.

Once we had eaten, we had to ask for the check.  And then we had to wait another 10 minutes for it to come.

The whole experience left us with a bitter taste in our mouths.  I think we felt like we were singled out or deliberately ignored.  Why the good service to the other table and not ours?

We will not be going back.

    Highlights.

    1. No delivery Fee
    2. Tandore Chicken
    3. I always ask for extra rice, and they always give it to me, free of charge
    4. The food is great (Chicken in seasoned spinach)
    5. It was my first attempt at Indian, so they will have me as a fan for life.

    Lowlights:

    1. The roti isn't very good
    2. Delivery takes longer than most other places

I REALLY love indian food.  So I was thrilled, while at work, to realize that urban india has no delivery minimum and no delivery fee.  That's awesome.  So I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and the mango yogurt drink.
The Chicken Tikka Masala was yummy, but quite greasy.  I did appreciate the big pieces of white meat, but the oil was way too plentiful, which was a turn off to be sure.  Also, it was about $13 which was way too much, when you compare what that'll get you at somewhere like SIR.  The mango drink didn't taste real- it was way too sweet.
I would like to try other things like their somosas and whatnot, but I'll use these guys only for delivery right now.  Their food doesn't match the price for a sit in restaurant, but the lack of delivery minimum or delivery fee makes them a good choice for delivery.
Also...The delivery guy was rude.  Literally just handed me my food and walked away.  And there was no fork or anything inside whihc was obnoxious since I was at work.
Whatever.  Still better than any comparably priced chinese delivery, that's for sure

I would recommend Samosas as appetizers they are one of the best in Chicago.
The chutney sweet and mint were delicious. For entrees, I would recommend the rogan josh and the chicken tikka masala. The naan was really fresh and tasty. The basmati rice was really good. Overall, a fine dining gem. Kudos to the owners!

My boyfriend and I went with the Groupone deal too.  We went on a Saturday night and got there maybe around 10 PM, they close at 10:30, but seated us and everything was fine.

Service was a little slow and the waiter was really talkative, but they've been open only 2 months.  This is probably his first waitering job so we let it go.  Also he answered our questions more than adequatly.

My boyfried got his usual sag paneer.  It was a large portion with a little side of rice.  It's his favorite sag paneer now!  Very fresh, large cubes of paneer and yummy plain rice on the side.  But could use a larger portion of that.....

I asked for a recommendation of a mild vegetarian dish and the waiter said that everything could be made mild for me.  I got the bhindi masala, mild, and it also came with the little side of rice.

To complete our meal, my boyfriend got the lamb samosas, which are HUGE!, vegetable biryani, (a bit spicy), garlic naan and mango lassis.  We kind of judge a place by the garlic naan and mango lassis, and Urban India does a fantastic job on both.  6

Thankfully, by boyfriend gifted a second Groupon to me, because we will be back!

    ps, bring a sweater....

    A perfect 10!

We tried it with groupon ($20 for $40) and were very pleased with the experience.

Great food (we tried lamb meat balls for appetizers, lamb tikka masala and a chicken oven-dish for dinner-dont remember the name), great service!  Decor is modern-not 100 % my style but still nice.

    Highly recommended!

I am no indian food expert. In fact, this was my first sit down restuarant indian food experience I've ever had with only fast food indian food chain Chutney Joes to compare things to. So I'm pretty green but nonetheless here are my thoughts.

The decor and feel of the place is great. Driving down Devon one will see plenty of indian food eateries with minimal concern for ambiance and decor. Urban India is sleek and sexy and a great place to bring a date which is an advantage over much of the competition. The one negative is that a couple times throughout the night a distinct smell of smoke came from the kitchen and it got pretty intense at one point. Both times the unpleasant smells didn't last too long, maybe five minutes, but they were a downer and the reason why our clothes smelled like a campfire.

The food is great. The veggie Urban Platter appetizer is an assortment of fried treats and was easily shared with my table of four. The cheese Naan and the garlic Naan were soft, flakey, and delicious with the garlic Naan being my favorite. My curry chicken was good. The curry chicken was the only dish I tried the whole evening that was similar to the lower quality of Chutney Joes but the dish was still nicely flavored and accompanied by a small dish of tasty rice. I put some mango chutney on the chicken and it added an additional layer of great flavor. Other small bites I had from other dishes like the Makhani Paneer were all very tasty and I was impressed. My indian food veteran friends I came with said that this was the best indian food they've had in Chicago. It had just the right amount of spice. Not too hot. Not for too mild. And for what's it's worth I agree.

The service is the reason why it's four stars and not five. Our server was nice enough but it seemed like we bugged him. He just was short with us in conversation and there was a time that we sat around after we were done eating for about 25 minutes with no one checking up on us at all. We just wanted our bill and though we were enjoying the conversation at the table we had to eventually stack up our used plates to get any sort of attention. The man I believed to be the owner of the restaurant was kind and seemed sincere in is his wanting us to have an enjoyable time. Too bad their server, who we interacted with the most, did not display the same feelings. But really don't let that stop you from coming. This place is a great place and will be a nice fit for both indian food greenhorns and veterans alike.

There's something about a nice, glossy sheen on a restaurant that instantly makes me feel comfortable.  Now I'm no stranger to some of the dive-ier restaurants, but on Devon (just like in Chinatown) sometimes it's difficult to choose a restaurant without resulting in the close-your-eyes-and-point method.

Urban India has a very modern, purple and gold exterior that sets it apart from some of the busier flickering signs on Devon.  I was a bit frightened of the white tablecloths adorning the tables as I walked by -- "Wait," I told my companions, "We should turn around, I'm wearing a hoodie and jeans".  They had none of that.  Inside, it's dimly lit and has a more classy vibe, but the dishes were reasonably priced (Apps @ 5 and below, Mains @ 12-15, Naans @ 3-4) and I was fine dressed down.

The food was good and came in sharable portions (as is expected on Devon), but man some of them were brow-sweatingly spiced.  The food was pretty good, but not the greatest thing since frozen chaat.  Definitely satisfying, though.

Service was ok, there seemed to be a new-restaurant delay and the staff seemed a bit thrown off by the crowd the night we went.

I will admit, I went with Groupon in tow which brought our $75 meal down to 40 for four people.  Everyone at the table was adequately stuffed and we all agreed we needed a cold shower and a towel to dry some of the perspiration away.

I think Urban India is definitely worth a shot -- just make sure you don't dress too warmly.

Could not pass up the recent Groupon offer for Urban India ($40 for $20).  As a frequent guest to many of the Devon Ave dining spots, I was looking forward to our dinner here.  Upon entering i noticed very quickly that this is the nicest looking restaurant on this stretch.  Very clean, updated, and cozy.

On to the food...... Large portions... almost too much food.  The food was on par with most of the better Indian restaurants on Devon.  Not the best I've had, but still very good.  The food is keeping it from being a 5-star.  I would not order delivery from them, but will be back to dine at what was a great "date night" spot.

Came across this restaurant via Groupon tonite and decided to check it out.  I expected the average Indian restaurant but was pleasantly surprised by the ambience.  Cozy, dimly lit but enough light to have a conversation and read your menu.

    Service:
5 Stars no question of that.  Very attentive servers, very polite and definitely there to make sure the customers are taken care of.

    Food:
My wife who's a vegetarian and I ordered a plate of samosas and chicken tikka for starters.  Samosas in both our opinion were perhaps one of the best we've had in town.  My only complain was the center was a little cold but the flavor was so good.  The chicken tikka was also great.  Generous portion I have to say.  Can have that with a nan and you have a meal.

My wife ordered their Rasam soup which was full of flavor.

For the main entrees, we ordered the "Mixed Veggies with Paneer" and "Chef Special Fish & Shrimp Curry."

The Mixed veggies with paneer was awesome with amazing flavor.  The paneer was great but would have been better if it was more fresh.  Rice that came with this dish was ample.

The Fish & Shrimp Curry too was amazing.  For the price, I have to admit that they were very generous with the fish which was salmon.  Again, amazing flavors.

Overall, the food actually tasted like home cooked Indian food.  The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the samosas were a little cold in the center and the paneer wasn't as fresh.

So we ordered carryout from UI, since we live less than a block away. I ordered the same entree as in my original review and my wife had Sag Potato. We also switched our app to Onion Pakora. Being carryout food, sometimes things don't hold up well. My Chicken Tikka Masala was a bit oily on top when I got it home, but I just mixed it up and it was good. Still spicy but a somewhat oilier than when we ate it in person. The Onion Pakora had steamed itself in its container so it wasn't crispy, but chewy while still being hot. It tasted OK - not great. My wife's Sag Potato entree was kind of bland and she wished for the Tadka Dal she had previously. The cheese Naan was good. Also, again we felt the meal was short on rice compared to carryout from other places. Not sure what's up with the small amount of rice serverd both times we've been there but I didn't have enough to add to my Masala the next day, so I just used the Naan.  We'll still give UI a try, but will probably go with friends vs. getting carryout.

To be fair, I ordered delivery using grubhub, so the dining experience could be better. Of course, I would rather give them 2 1/2 stars because the experience was so mixed.

So let's start with the good: Free delivery and no minimum!! This made me immediately take notice and choose them over other places. It was delivered around when they said it would be. Just when I started doing my happy dance...The okra was very tasty, but a little cold. The Chicken Tikka Masala was pretty good, too, but...

The bad: It had separated and there was oil, a lot of oil, on top of the dish. I was taken aback, but I thought I could pour some off or soak a little up with the napkin. Still, it didn't look very appetizing. I ended up fishing out the chicken pieces and onions as best as I could. I was expecting creamy, not oily.

To sum it up, I would try ordering something different from them next time (even though Chicken Tikka Masala is my favorite)!

As Steven mentioned., this is a new restaurant on Devon ave.,a.k.a India town...I'd seen the signs up a couple of weeks ago and made a note to check it out as the name suggested a place that might be different.

We stopped by on a Saturday evening,,a week after they opened..the place was spotless clean which is a good sign..some tables and lots of booths..the interior  I thought was in some ways similar to Uru swati ..more of a modern look and not your stereotypical Indian restaurant with pics of ancient indian kings and courtesans. simple..nothing over the top..and the restroom was very clean ..winner !

They dont serve alcohol but is a BYOB...We started  with the vegetarian urban platter ($9.95)..deep fried goodness!!. consists of samosas, potato cutlets, pakoras, fried paneer, fried peppers. we ate half and packed the rest..this cud easily be an appettizer for 3-4.
For our main course we ordered the Murgh Malai Tikka (boneless chicken cubes..$14.95), Bhaingan Piaz Masala (egg plant roasted in a clay oven..$11.99)  and being from a coastal village in India where the fishermen went door to door on bicycles selling their daily catch .I had to try the grilled pomfret..We also tried the Chatpata Naan and the Kashmiri Naan..the latter has a slight hint of sweetness and wud be good with coffee... Overall the food was well presented, very tasty, not oily and had great flavor.. The fish wasnt pomfret but catfish..deep fried..true indian style ! The owner- chef stopped  to chat and you know when there's a mom in the kitchen things are going to taste good !

Overall a good dining experience for Devon, tasty food and nice ambience.
