Decent food, a lot of wine
Disclaimer:  I am not much of a wine drinker and know almost nothing about them.
With that out the way, checked out he wine bistro tonight and was not thrilled like I expected to be.  Our party did not have reservations, but we were early enough to grab seats in the bar area.  The wine I picked was not appealing to me, but since I don't know anything about wine that's my bad.  The crabcake appetizer was tasty, but not phenomenal by any means.  The entree also was ok but not special (short ribs & mushroom risotto).  I didn't see any desserts so that was all I had.
Overall decent experience. Maybe if I become more knowledgeable about wine I will try again.
I had a fantastic time here!! Met an old friend here for dinner and drinks when u was in town. The drinks arrived quickly and our server very attentive in that nice but not annoying way. Had the prosciutto bruschetta and crab cake. Both super yummy. Friend had the shrimp and lobster pasta that was very flavorful and not drowned in sauce. Overall meal executes with excellent quality. Could not be happier with our experience.
Review Source:The food was really good but over priced. My meatball sandwich was low on meatball. The girlfriend liked her crab cakes. For the prices they could hire a cleaning crew. Dust everywhere. Lamps, lighting fixtures and surfaces. Does this indicate the cleanliness of the kitchen? The carpet in the sitting area needs replaced as the corner sticks up. Someone will fall eventually. Cheaper the replace a carpet than pay medical bills. It's the details people.
Review Source:I'm still a fan, but the WB has changed a bit.
One of my favorite items was their fairly priced, small cheese plate for $6 that had hearty servings of fruit, cheese (cubed/pre-cut), candied nuts, a warm baguette & flavored, house-infused (and fantastically delicious) honey - no more. Now they have a three-cheese option, which is just a thin slice of a few cheeses, no nuts, some fruit and some sort of apricot or orange marmalade. Don't get me wrong it was good, but not as good as its predecessor. AND they raised the price to $10. Bummer.
Wine is still great. Although they ran out of two of their by-the-glass options tonight. Another bummer.
Still a great place for gathering, still a great menu, still great wines, but no longer worthy of my 5 stars.
We went here for a gathering of friends one Saturday evening. Â We ate in the special event room and it was wonderful - clean, cozy, quiet and well decorated. Â The server was always at hand and the manager checked on us a couple of times. Â If you're thinking about reserving the special event room, they now have a minimum total spend amount for your party - discuss it with the manager ahead of time. Â Plenty of staff were available in the main room to assist on purchasing bottles of wine. Â Wine selection is very good. Â The food was fresh and tasty and prices are reasonable for the area. Â The main dining area is definitely bistro-ey - black tables and chairs or you can sit at the window ledge. Â We will definitely go back.
Review Source:This is my second review and I still love the Wine Bistro! My now husband reserved the private room for my 27th birthday almost a year ago on a Monday night. We had 16 friends with wine and appetizers and the bill came to about $80!!! How can you beat that?! We also went this past week for restaurant week. We picked a bottle of wine, no corkage fee on Tuesday, and sat on the patio. Our appetizers were very delicious. Dinner was good and dessert was light abs sweet. We love this place on the no corkage night!
Review Source:I've been to the Wine Bistro twice now, one time just to sip and chat, the second for three courses of Restaurant Week goodness with the ladies. I'm impressed by the elegant yet laid back vibe, and it's a cozy, seasonally appropriate place no matter what time of the year (patio!).
For a restaurant with such a huge focus on wine retail, the food is amazingly good. The menu is definitely vinyard-inspired, and reminds me of the menus I experienced in Napa-- think cheeses, seasonal fruit accents, flavors that remind you of sunny orchard tables. Execution is great.
For Restaurant Week, I had the veal meatball (amazingly tender and good), the seafood fettuccine with seasonal veggies like corn and squash (with lobster! for Restaurant week! I know market prices are abnormally low right now, but still), and brandied cherries with ice cream for dessert. All this for $20, was the best deal of the three restaurants I tried for Restaurant Week at that price category.
The wine is retail, with a corking fee. Even with the $8 corking fee, this is a much more economical option than ordering wine at a restaurant with the typical markup, especially since the food here is so phenomenal. You are encouraged to browse, but I just kind of described what I wanted/liked and my server brought over a couple of options. She helped me make a selection with the flavor and price point I was comfortable with. The servers will take your bottle to the back and bring it to the optimal temperature, if necessary.
Our server was a bit of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, nervous and twittering all over the place. At times, we felt abandoned, but then again us ladies were enjoying being lost in conversation. We were seated at a large table (square 8-top, even though there were just 4 of us) in one of the back alcoves. It almost felt like we had a private room. They do have a private room in the back, by the way, which would be great for a special occasion meal for 12ish. It's a little over-decorated, perhaps, but still cozy and looks like it would foster some good times and memories. The whole aesthetic juuuust verges on the line of being suburban-chainy, but it's still on the right side, I think.
This would be a great place for a date night or a girls' night. Enjoy just for the wine and apps, or stay awhile and be blown away by the surprisingly awesome dinner menu. I'm leaning towards 5 stars-- can't wait for my next visit to hopefully make an update!
My husband and I went to The Wine Bistro for dinner last night and we were very disappointed. Â The service was extremely poor. Â It took literally 30 minutes from the time our orders were taken just to get our appetizers. Â The food was nothing extraordinary. Â The only bright spots were the dessert options and the wine list. Â
Unfortunately the bad far outweigh the good. Â With so many wonderful restaurant options in Columbus, we won't be back. Â Life is too short to waste on mediocre dining.
Where do I begin this review...? With the meatball of course! It's juicy, cheesy, and full of flavor, everything a meatball should be. The presentation is cute, it's served in a little cast iron pot with a slightly sweet sauce and crunchy toast on the side.
Their flatbreads are consistently tasty as are their salads. A warning to salad eaters, the greens are fresh, but saturated in dressing. I recommend getting your dressing on the side. Â
A Warm and Cozy atmosphere and friendly service makes this place a fine establishment and one I will be visiting again.
Went here on a "double date" on Friday night and I must admit, I was blown away. I had no idea what I was missing! This place is amazing in ambiance, selection, and service. We sat inside, mostly because the outdoor patio was already packed... but no complaints here! The interior is beautiful and romantic. Walls and walls of wines to choose from, sorted by "new world", "old world", and then reds/whites. My boyfriend and I split a Hook and Ladder red blend, and our friends split a Riesling. You get to walk around and literally pick your bottle off the shelf. The whites need a few minutes to chill, but it's not bad and the waitress filled them up after ~8 minutes to hold them over until the entire bottle was cold.
I got the "award winning" veal meatball and our friends got the equivalent flatbread. We all loved it. Later I was craving chocolate and split the pot de creme with my boyfriend. Really good, but also very rich and covered in whipped cream. Probably won't get that again... but I still do want to try more things off the menu. The wine flights also looked interesting and I might try one of those next time. The $8 corkage fee was no biggie to me. Our bottle of wine was $18 anyway, so total it's not bad (all bottle sold at state minimum, so they range from $12-$40+). Plus you're paying for the ambiance really. I will definitely be back and suggest anyone looking for a nice night out for drinks, be it with friends or significant others, try out The Wine Bistro!
This place has delicious food pairings, but they're only available until 5 which is not great.
I love love love the French Onion soup, it's WAY better than those of it's competitors. I like to get soup and a 1/2 of flatbread. Â The Brie and Pear Flatbread is amazing. Â Beware, the service and be iffy.
Totes adorbs wine bar...Technically I think that translates in cool, hip person speak to "totally adorable". It was a gorgeous day so we got to sit outside on the patio with our dog. Though had they not had the option to be outside, even the inside was inviting on a perfect Columbus afternoon. Josh, our server, was very passionate and informed on the wines that were on the menu. He also took a lot of time to answer all of our food questions; describing everything we asked about. We started with the popcorn, which was very flavorful and a good size for three people to share. All of the food was pretty good, but the curry chicken and mango flatbread was definitely a stand-out; it by far defeated all of the other food options we tried. Loved this place!
Review Source:I am the furthest thing from an oenophile--I'm still in the red wine with red meat and white wine for everything else phase, but I love this place. Â The food and wine are pretty good and the service is great. Â
The wife and I have been here twice, both times on spur of the moment afternoon dates. Â had the melted fondue trio twice, now and loved it both times. Â The Ementhaller and Sauvignon Blanc fondue will keep us coming back again and again. Â We also have had the "Blank and Blank" each time. Â Most recently, I had the Bistro Meatball Baguette as part of my combo, which was darn tasty. Â I've also had the Braised Veal Meatball flatbread (basically the same thing, now that I think about it), which was decent but a little less successful. Â The tomato sauce they use on this is a touch too sweet for me. Â Plus, I always feel a little guilty about eating veal.
Most recently, I had a 2008 Malbec that was very smooth. Â Like I said, I'm no oenophile so I can't invoke any more sophisticated comparisons like "oaky", "smokey" , "woody", "grumpy", "sneezy", "doc"... wait a second. Â Anyway, it tasted pretty good and lunch for two with drinks came to a little less than $50. Â Pretty good value, I think.
The ambiance is quite nice. Â This is one of those places that always makes me feel slightly more sophisticated than I actually am. Â Or maybe it's the wine. Â There are several two and four tops, a bar area and a larger table near the front of the space for large groups. Â Additionally, there's a neat private dining room that would be a fun night out for a smaller group or a few couples.
Perhaps one day when I retire and have sufficiently pickled my liver enough to become knowledgeable about wine, I'll turn up my nose at places like The Wine Bistro, but till then I'll keep coming back for good food, good wine and friendly service.
This place is one of those ultra-chic Wine retail bars. A place where you can buy wine to go at retail prices or drink there. I will say that if you love wine, that this place is a good deal. On Mondays and Tuesdays the skip their usual $8 corkage fee so you can drink the wine you buy in house for cheap. The food was OK, not the best deal in town but I didn't feel ripped off either.
Here is where it lost me a little.
The Happy Hour only goes till 6:00! How is the average person supposed to get there by then? You should know something is wrong with your happy hour when fine dinning restaurants like Hyde Park and The Refectory have Happy Hours running later than yours...
Their glass pours were expensive, at least when you consider that you can buy a full bottle so cheap. It didn't seem to add up...You could but a bottle of wine at state minimum retail but a glass of decent wine cost at least $9. Idk, it just seemed strange to me.
I still enjoyed my visit and will probably go back.
2 stars for food
4 stars for wine
Had:
French onion soup = fabulous!
Warm olives = fair (pits taken out) but just two types of olives. Basically, was a jar of olives warmed up. Â
Hummus and pita bread = bread warm. Spreads ok. Olive tapenade the best
Sausage flatbread = DISAPPOINTING. bread doughy. Cheese was not good. Sausage not flavorful. Like little Caesars pizza. We didn't eat much of it. Â We told waitress it wasn't good, and she didn't seem paticularly surprised. didn't offer to do anything about it.
Love the selection of wine in bottles. Maybe more )$10 bottles considering corkage fee is $8.
We stopped in on Saturday ~2:30 and it was pretty empty, but even then parking in the back was pretty spotting so I can assume that there will be no open spaces when the restaurant is busy. That said, the restaurant is charming and can be romantic. The seats were close together, but since there was no else dining, it didn't really bother me.
We started with the cheese platter--the baguette was warm and delicious, the cheeses were nothing to write home about--I just had an intense craving for a cheese platter. However, I really liked the spiced nuts and special honey. My dining partner got the veal meatball pizza and I got the orchard chicken baguette. He really enjoyed the pizza, and I agree that the veal meatballs are delicious. The sandwich comes with a side salad dressed with a strange "balsamic vinaigrette". I felt that the sandwich was kind of dry, but I don't really like chicken overall, and plus it actually re-heated really well when I had to bring it home.
The Wine Bistro has great service and surprisingly good food. I felt weird being there and not getting alcohol so I ordered wine by the glass and I think it was kind of expensive so I would recommend just buying a bottle and re-corking it (free re-corking Mon and Tues).
We went here for a delicious date. The no corking fee Monday/Tuesday was a great surprise and we ordered a very nice Pinot Gringos. We followed that with the olive appetizer, the olives were very good, but would have been better with a little bread to cut the saltiness. I then got the almost famous meatball which was fantastic and my wife got the california chicken salad. The food was good, though the salad wasn't memorable. Our only complaint was the service. We first off had a hard time spotting them since they were dressed up less than most of the guest. Then it could be cause they were a bit busy and it was loud there, but our server forgot about us after she took our order. Well definitely go back, hopefully we'll not be forgotten. I would like to give a shout out to the hostess who went and found our lost appetizers when we were unable to find our waitress.
Review Source:Wide selection of wines at competitive prices. Â The racking and signage is a bit messed up and you may need some directing. Â Staff is very nice but if you know your wines may need them to give you some space.
The set up is basically a wine store with some tables, a little packed and nothing to write home about. Â That said the fact it is crowded says folks seem to like it.
Food is barely okay, what they provide is a list of average apps that are hit and mainly miss. Â Nothing great, even the cheese plate, I might give it a 2 for food.
Parking can be tough in this area, the lot was full and there is very limited street side parking.
I wouldny rush back and went home pretty hungry.
Haven't tried much on the menu except for the good flatbread pizzas and a lousy veggie sandwich. Â Wine by the glass is expensive! Â Definitely order by the bottle unless you're not sure what you want in which case the tasting flights are the way to go. Â This is definitely much more of a scene-type establishment. Â The food is secondary but I had a good time with friends on the ample patio and it is within walking distance from home. Â Always a plus!
Review Source:You're surprised? I'm surprised! I'm normally not one to review an American-fare restaurant with 5 stars (yes yes, it's listed under Italian, but if this place is Italian then I am a direct descendent of Burt Reynolds' moustache - which I actually wouldn't mind). It's hard to mess up American fare, but it's also not easy to make it ridiculously good. Full props to The Wine Bistro, though, because it completely deserves this 5-star rating.
I have to admit that I was a bad patron... I didn't order any wine (for shame). I did, however, try my friends' wine and it was all good. For food I had the chicken pesto & sundried tomato baguette. I consider myself a carb connoisseur and the baguette itself was ridiculously tasty - not too hard but also not too soft. Sometimes you can get a baguette that literally (literally) cuts the roof of your mouth. Not so here.
As for the atmosphere: the servers here all wear non-descript clothes. Our server, for example, was wearing a white shirt, jeans, and sunglasses on her head. Strange, but it does give a more "vineyard" feel to an otherwise urban on-Lane-Avenue and in-the-middle-of-traffic restaurant. Despite the setting, sitting outside is HIGHLY recommended on nice days - the traffic really isn't bothersome.
Great food, neat atmosphere, fun times!
I didn't eat any food here, in fact I was unsure if they served any before coming, so I pigged out beforehand, so this review is for the place as a watering hole.
You can get glasses of wine or bottles. Â $8 corking fee for bottles everyday except Tuesdays. Â They have a little bit of wine from all over. Â A lot of effort was put into selecting the wine I felt, in order to have reasonably priced selections that range from decent to good.
I did feel like the service sucked. Â I didn't know who our waitress was and sat there without so much as a glass of water for 15 minutes before being my assertive old self and going and picking out my own bottle off the shelf and taking it to the bar. Â The cockknocker behind the bar sort of got an attitude with me because I wasn't going to go "sit and wait for my server" anymore, and instead asked him to do some actual work and open it himself. Â I mean, if you're a manager or owner, shouldn't fuss over earning your keep once and awhile.
The flatbreads everyone seemed to agree they liked, so if you're hungry, I'd go that route probably. Â (after comparing some notes, I guess the flatbreads were hit or miss, forage at you own risk, I make no guarantees ;) )
I gave you guys 4 stars because I enjoyed myself and liked the place, but if your service doesn't improve, I am likely to knock you down to 3 stars (or worse) and become totally ambivalent (or worse) about coming here.
My first impression was great, the interior was well design, bottles lined wall and were very well organized. Â The prices of wine were well priced. Â
My only issue was their service.  I purchased a bottle of wine and immediately the waitress opened the bottle having no glass, which isnt a big deal till she forgot about it completely, so i sat there unable to drink anything.  A friend finally went to the bar and grabbed a glass from my waitress behind the bar.  The waitress didn't acknowledge anything and it was kinda of joke around the table.  I politely asked the waitress for a glass of water and again never received it.  My friends were shock and we created it as a game as to how long it took till the waitress figure out I still  don't have water.  They kinda egged me on and laughed ever time she came around the table, filling other peoples glass of water and clearing the table on either side of me, ignoring me completely.  Well i gave up and had to pour my own from a stand next to the door because i was getting really thirsty.  I really like this place and glad i got a opportunity to try this out with a few other friends.  However my experience wasn't the greatest.  Ill give it a try again and hopefully try a different waitress. Â
To be continued.
Hosting a UYE here at the suggestion of Ms. C, I was impressed and am now a fan. A few misteps led me to a 4 star review, but overall, I will be happily returning, hopefully many times. This place was busy for a Tuesday, and I know why. Because it's a great place!
I'd like to start with the issues I had.
1) With all of the staff wearing 'very nice, but essentially street clothes', it was difficult to determine who was staff and who was wandering or standing around. For instance, I had no idea the hostesses were the two girls chatting at the cash register desk until they asked if I'd been helped. 2) One of our group sat without a glass until I got up to get him one and the table was similarly upprepared with silverware and plates. These things were easliy rectified and really not a problem, but noticed.
3) There was a pricing issue with ourfinal bill. It was corrected after the server verified that she, in fact, did ring it wrong. Again, just a small issue corrected with a smile.
4) The flatbread crust was way over browned, cooked to a hard cracker consistency and the color of dark brown sugar, I am pretty sure that's not typical of a flatbread. It still tasted good and toppings were well dispersed, but the toppings weren't very hot compared to the crust being so over done. Weird!
OK, I'm over complaining. Here's what's awesome about The Wine Bistro.
1) Great ambiance.
2) Comfortable Environment
3) Attentive, friendly, knowledgable service. She was able to suggest and educate without being a know-it-all. She made the experience easy and fun.
4) Yummy Wine Service. So many wines to choose from, you can actually shop for your bottle and the cork is for you for an $8 fee Weds-Sat. Monday and Tuesday, they wave the fee.
5) State minmum pricing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My bottle was only $12.99 and it tasted great.
6) the salads looked amazing, so I want to try more of the food.
7) It's an overall great spot for groups, dates, friends, and family!
Check it out!
Tasting flights at 1 in the PM on a weekday? Why not?
With a fellow wine connoisseur in tow, I needed to see what the buzz about The Wine Bistro (TWB) was all about. The decor was surprisingly dark and uninviting -- much like the rest of the newer complex. Thankfully, our cheery server was quick to grace us with the food and extensive wine menus.
Now here's where TWB falls a little flat: the food menu. I am usually wary of restaurants putting out dishes that are scattered all over the place, and this place was no exception. From the Thai chicken salad to the scallops alfredo to the curried shrimp and mango flatbread, I felt as though the menu was anything but cohesive. The food ordered confirmed my initial hunch. While I immensely enjoyed the trio of fondue, I was not impressed by the juliette flatbread. (Spagio remains stalwart at having -- hands down -- the best brie pizza in town!) The interplay amongst the ingredients listed on the menu simply did not set foot in the realm of good. The triple chocolate pot de creme, however, was a delightful closure to our meal. I'd like to think of it as melted fudge served in a cup. One would be hardpressed to polish off the aforementioned dessert alone.
Vino-wise, I was slightly disappointed by the flights. From the flights of whites, I thoroughly enjoyed one of the four handpicked selections. However, my friend fared better, as he had opted for the a la carte menu instead.
All in all, a-okay in my book. I blame it on my slightly overinflated expectations given the 5-star average rating here on Yelp. So, yes, I have to go against the grain on this one -- at least in terms of the food. I'll stick to the heart protective drinks next time.
"Woohoo! As good as it gets!" indeed!! Â I was really blown away by this place. Â Such great wine, food, ambience, Â and service. Â
The rustic decor was fun and wine displays appeared impressive. Â I'm no wine connoisseur so I'm not sure if their selection is that great.
I started my dinner off with a Watermelon Gazpacho. Â A mix of watermelon, marinated tomatoes, jalapeno, honey, topped with feta. Â It was a very unique blend of ingredients that actually tasted fantastic together! Â
I shared the Wild Mushroom flatbread and "The Juliette" flatbread, which had pears, brie, garlic cream sauce, and parmesan. Â They were both oh soo soo good! Â I'm usually not ultra impressed by flatbreads. Â These were great!
I don't remember exactly what wine I tried. Â It might have been a Vinho Verde. Â It was pretty good. Â But again, I'm no wine connoisseur.
There were some loungey areas with comfy looking couches. Â I'd love to come back and open a bottle with some friends and sample some appetizers. Â They also have wifi here! Â I say out with studying in coffee shops and in with studying in wine bars!
Hey, so I know this place has the word "wine" in the name, but could I please talk to you about the unexpectedly amazing food?
I visited this place for lunch today with my mother and grandmother, and I didn't talk to either of them because I was too busy inhaling my California Garden Patch Baguette. Â So saucy. Â So oily. Â So cheesy. Â I'm going to be dreaming about it longingly for the next month. Â I also had a salad of field greens (a.k.a. fancy-pants lettuce) in a sugary-sweet balsamic vinaigrette that's worth a shout-out. Â I paired my meal with a dry but fruity white Bordeaux, which didn't taste bad, but was so reminiscent of Welch's white grape juice that I couldn't think of anything else while I drank it. Â I would get something else next time, or if I was going to be staying for awhile, I might try one of their tasting flights before ordering my meal. Â I tend to go a little hog wild when it comes to ordering wine by the glass, so I really had to rein myself in here, and pick only one.
If you visit this place, you should know that I was wearing (nice) jeans, an old black sweater, and my somewhat beat up leather jacket, and I felt pretty under-dressed, even in the early afternoon. Â Everyone else was noticeably more dressed up than I was. Â Also, my mom and dad tried to go during the evening on a Friday night and waited for more than an hour to get their table because it was so crowded inside, so if you want to avoid those shenanigans, try it for lunch or during the evening earlier in the week.
Here's the deal - $8 corking fee. If you want to get out of the house;have a decent (not great) meal;and enjoy a good (possibly great) bottle of wine; and not get whacked with a 200% markup then this is the place to go.
It is essentially a wine shop that serves food and charges $8 corking fee if you drink the wine on premise. Not bad - eh?
I'm a bit slow on the uptake and didn't figure this out until I paid $14 for a glass of The Prisioner. When my friend explained that I could have had the entire bottle for about $38 I figured it out
Good atmosphere. I'll be back.
