FANTASTIC.
Came here Friday night with my husband and four other friends and we were all very impressed by the food. My husband and I split the Egyptian hummus (supposed to be lower in fat and high in protein) and it was delicious.
I'm not a falafel fan but one friend ordered that for his appetizer. I have never had falafel that tasty before. I think I will order it next time I go (and yes, there will be a next time for sure).
All of us ordered gyros and the great thing was that you could specify your toppings. I had the classic gyro with beef and lamb, lettuce, cucumber, and onions. It was very filling, and I had to knife and fork it because it was so big. Between that and the hummus we split, I was stuffed.
The prices were great. For the hummus appetizer, two gyros, and a beer (2X IPA for $3!), our order came to a total of $27. The best part was that we had a Groupon.
This place will become a regular for us.
The renovations are great and I love the atmosphere.
The food is pretty awesome. I've had the falafel and the classic gyro and both were great. I like that you can choose a number of different toppings. There are about 10 free toppings and then about 10 that range from $0.50 to $1.00. The tzatziki sauce comes on the side and is freaking fantastic.
The tribal fries are amazing as well and I thoroughly enjoyed the baklava.
My husband and I bought a Groupon for Zaytun because we were curious and the reviews sounded good, and now we love the place! Â The portions are huge and the prices are good. Â We split a chicken gyro, falafel, and the tribal fries...which we would do all over again. Â One thing I noticed that confused us as well as some of the other patrons, is that when you order a gyro, you pick all of the toppings. Â The description on the menu will tell you the meat and the sauce, then you pick the vegetables and cheeses you want. Â We wish it was closer to us, cause we would go a lot more often!
Review Source:My new favorite place in Louisville!
I can say that I love Mediterranean food just as much as I love sushi, so I've been to quite a few Mediterranean restaurants both here and in the Philippines. Zaytun has earned its place on the number 1 spot.
We got the baba ghanouj for appetizer. It was different from the usual baba ghanouj that I know but it was still good. I would have preferred the regular baba ghanouj flavor with just regular pita (not fried like Zaytun's) though. My husband got the Classic Gyro and I got the falafel. They were so huge and we were able to consume only half each. The falafel was delicious, they were like has browns-- Mediterranean style! I was able to try the gyro too because we traded our half sandwiches for lunch the next day. It was yummy... tasted a lot better than the falafel actually.
The fatties that we are tried the tribal fries too since I've read a lot of good things about it. What I can say is that anything topped with lots of cheese would be delicious, so I wasn't exactly impressed.
It was a wonderful experience all in all even if my mind was not blown by some of the dishes that we tried, which is why it gets 5 stars from me. Fast service, beautiful decor, and the gyros are FTW!
Great place for Mediterranean food. Â Nice atmosphere, fire place going, lights dimmed throughout. Â Waitress was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. Â My wife and I split the Tribal Fries and both got gyros, she got the Classic and I got the Hero's. I do enjoy a beer or two with my food and they were in the middle of renewing their licensing, so no beer or wine sales, so we both got waters to drink. Â I was shocked when I received our bill on how reasonably priced this place was. Â Besides not serving alcohol this place was outstanding. Â Looking forward to trying their other menu offerings in the future.
Review Source:This WAS my favorite place in Louisville to eat Mediterranean food, and I ate here A LOT, but the owner was such an ass last time that I don't think I'll be returning. Â I asked for a simple substitution, which is what I always get each time I go, and my husband and I were the ONLY customers in the restaurant so it's not like it was an inconvenience, and he threw a fit and said no even though I said I'd pay extra. Â So, don't think I'll be back if that is how you treat regulars. Totally uncalled for.
Review Source:This place has quickly become one of my favorite spots. Â It's not the best restaurant in town, but definitely my favorite Mediterranean place. Â The Gyros are huge and delicious. Â Hummus is good. Â Love their Tzatziki sauce. Â Haven't had a bad dish yet after like 4 visits. Â Great atmosphere since they did the renovation. Â Can't go wrong with this place and well deserving of 5 stars overall.
Review Source:When you see New York on TV it's all about the bagels, street hot dogs, and a slice from Ray's Original Famous Pizzeria III. What you don't see is our takeout menus. Every neighborhood in Brooklyn is defined by the level of their Thai takeout and in lower Manhattan it's about falafel and a gyro. We love our international cuisine!
Now that I live in Louisville, I wanted to see how close I'd be able to get to the real thing. The local Mediterranean cafe in my neighborhood in Brooklyn was called Zaytoon's, so I thought I'd give this place a try first. I was invited to seat myself once I arrived and while looking over the menu I heard the group next to me remarking that the restaurant had recently expanded into the retail space next door. So it may have been a hole in the wall before, but I was sitting in a perfectly lovely dining room with banquettes running along one long wall and tables throughout the room. My waitress was congenial, knowledgeable, and very proud of the food they served.
I ordered the Egyptian hummus, half a Zeus salad, and the classic gyro along with a traditional Greek beer. This was way too much food for one sitting, but I hadn't eaten all day and I wanted to try several menu items. The hummus was not at all what I'm used to, but very good. The salad was good too, but the gyro was a thrill. It tasted just like the shawarma style sandwiches I'm used to getting in NYC. And the tzatziki was authentic, plentiful, and served on the side, so you can indulge as liberally or as conservatively as you like. I don't know where the pita/flatbread objections are coming from in the previous reviews. As far as I know a pita is flatbread and a gyro isn't usually served in a pocket, there's just too much heat and moisture to stuff in there. Anyway I can assure you that this is the real deal and I ate every bite! Oh and the waitress slipped a small piece of baklava in my take home bag (clearly I couldn't even entertain dessert after that meal) which was wonderful the next day.
Locals have mentioned other places for me to try, but Zaytun gave me exactly what I'm used to: authentic + amazing + cheap. Before I try the next place, I'll be back for their falafel!
If you are a lover of good Med cuisine then this is you place. Â We had the Phoenician hummus app which was a perfectly seasoned blend of spice and tahini. Â The gyros were HUGE with a perfect balance of meat and viggies and the flatbread tasted amazing!!! Â I got the fish nugget gyro and my friend had the traditional meat gyro. The tab was less than $25 (we were drinking water) and the service was friendly casual but very efficient. Â
I love Ramsi's but their price point keeps it as a once every few months treat. Â The pricing, quality and service make Zaytun the kind of place I can easily visit once a week.
Update: They expanded the place I guess because they were doing so well. Now it feels like a nice restaurant and the food seems have taken a step up too. You can tell how much the Chef/owner cares about his product. The night we went in he actually waited on our table. He had good recommendations and made sure everything was to our liking. Gyro was even better than I remembered and they have a great wine special...$8 a bottle after 8pm every night. Not like the other places that triple or quadruple the price to half price night, no this is decent wine for $8. Only place to go for gyros in Louisville.
Two words,Tribal fries. These are worth a stop anytime you are headed home from a night out on Bardstown road. The gyros are the best i have ever had and will only think of one place to go for a good gyro from now on. The hummus was ok, nothing special, definitely had better at a few places.
I can't say anything about their food yet, but I am a big fan of their $8 bottles of wine after 8pm. A friend and I gladly partook is this deal last night. We sat and talked and drank for quite a while. The staff didn't try to rush us either, which was really nice.
I'll be back to check out the food soon enough!
I've only been here once and I can't stop talking about it. Â Based on presentation alone I give this place 4 stars. Â That lamb gyro was so fantastic I probably squealed a little bit. Â Check out the picture I uploaded, then you'll understand. Â Good price, nice staff, delicious food. Â What more is there to say? Â Check it out.
Review Source:A small hole-in-the-wall. Â Delicious food. Â Thank you Yelpers for helping me find this spot on a recent business trip to KY. Â
I enjoyed the falafel sandwich. Â It was served open-faced with lots of veggies (which you can select when you order). Â The falafel was well cooked on the outside and, at first, I thought it was burnt. Â I was pleasantly surprised to find the inside steaming warm and not a bit overcooked. Â They were flavorful and I loved the tstkiki. Â
It was just what I was looking for.
It's been a little while, I know, just haven't had the opportunity to review much lately. A dry spell, I suppose. It happens.
My current dinner companions are of the pint-sized sort and they've been begging to try something different lately. It's something I try to do with them occasionally, expand their palates beyond the standard chicken nuggets, mac & cheese sort. That's a work in progress but at least they're not begging to go to McD's every time we walk out the door.
Driving along Bardstown Rd, I'd heard of Zaytun's. It had been recommended a time or two as the best Mediterranean food in town. I can't say as I would be the perfect judge of that. I haven't been to all the Mediterranean/Greek restaurants in town. And there are a few if I recall correctly. But I've had a gyro a time or two before, so I can at least judge on that.
Zaytun's atmosphere is comfortably casual, not large, even intimate. Decorated sparsely with a Mediterranean flair, cultural music playing lightly in the background, it's the type of restaurant that I could find myself enjoying immensely. It suits me.
After seating ourselves as instructed, the waitress was prompt at asking for our drink order. The boys ordered a couple orange Fantas, I ordered a water. Now, the wonderful thing about ordering a soda here is it's the original glass bottle type, sweetened with real cane sugar, the kind I used to drink as a kid. Granted, you can find these in most ethnic groceries and Trader Joe's too but I appreciate a restaurant trying to keep it real, even if it is sodas bottled in Mexico for a Greek place. Albeit, you pay for it at $2.50 a piece with no refills.
The boys ordered a Hero Gyro to split and I ordered the Chicken Gyro plus some Tribal Fries for an appetizer. The fries were brought out promptly, nicely crisped fries loaded with 4-cheeses, cajun seasoning, sauteed onions and their specialty tribal dressing, which was maybe a yogurt or mayonnaise-based dressing loaded with dill and other seasonings. I could've had the dressing on the side (specifically for the kids) but when you took a bite with all these flavors together, it's cheesy carb lover heaven. Even able to get my youngest to give it a shot. That was this day's accomplishment.
The gyros arrived while we were about half way into the fries, which was about right. The boys' gyro was overloaded with meat and cheese as ordered, the meat sliced thin off the spit, with a flavor reminiscent to italian sausage. My chicken gyro loaded with fresh veggies had bite-sized pieces of saffron-spiced chicken (along with a few other spices). Both sandwiches came with tzatziki sauce on the side, which was a nice addition that added a cool, creamy, cucumbery component to the salty meat and cheese. All in all, everything was pretty tasty and more than satisfying.
And that's where it ended, too full to eat more, and unlikely to get dessert as the boys were already at sugar-overload from the drinks. Unfortunate, as I was really eyeing the baklava. Guess I'll have to leave that for some other time, right?
I was pretty unsure of what to expect at this place when my friend and I went and he prefaced it by saying "its perfect for any occasion--dinner with a friend, a date, or when I'm really sweaty and hungry after a run."
Surprisingly, I left my first dining experience there completely understanding how all of those situations could be perfectly suited (depending on the level of sweat...) to a dinner at Zaytun. I'd describe it as a casual atmosphere but the friendly and down to earth employees create a pleasant and welcoming vibe, making it seem pretty versatile for a number of occasions. In terms of the cuisine and setup, it is very similar to falafel house, but the food quality is way better (I feel pretty safe eating meat here) and the decor is nicer.
The gyros are great and you have the option to include as many extra toppings like lettuce, olives etc as you want. Plus, tzatziki sauce comes on the side! Finally, someone understands my reserve towards anything yogurt-based. Another favorite of mine are the Tribal fries. Make sure you've got a hungry friend or two to split them with, because there's a lot to go around. You won't have much of a problem if you go between 8-10 pm (special is good 7 days a week!) and get an $8 bottle of wine to pair with your meal.
If I was given one week to live, and could order from a different local spot for every meal, the classic gyro at Zaytun would make the cut for one of my lunch/dinner choices. The main reason for such a lofty endorsement is the "bang for your buck" factor. The classic is a huge portion of freshly shaved meat wrapped in warm, delicious flat bread. A major plus for the classic is that the bulk of weight actually comes from the meat. I personally load my down with almost all of the fresh toppings you can choose from with the exception of red onions and olives (personal preference), including banana peppers, jalapenos, cucumber, fetta, lettuce, tomato, and a cool tzatziki sauce that cuts the heat of the peppers. It's the kind of meal that you finish and think, "How did I eat all of that at once?".
Besides the classic, Zaytun has several varieties of humus that are made in house and are awesome (Phoenician is my favorite) and a really great Baba ghanoush. The falafel is solid and a great veggie option. The tribal fries are a stoners wet dream (french fries drowned in melted cheese, caramelized onions and some sort of sauce) and they have recently added a fried fish sandwich that is huge and perfectly fried. Wash everything down with a Mythos (light Greek lager) and you will leave satisfied.
If you want a great meal at a reasonable price, my suggestion would be to head to Zaytun and randomly point at the menu and say "I want that". You won't be disappointed.
I really really enjoyed this place. Â I was on the search for a new greek place in Louisville when I found out that my favorite greek restaurant, It's All Greek to Me, went out of business and I was begging for a good gyro.
I consulted my Yelpers and discovered this little place, yes little. Â But does this place pack a punch. Â MY sister and I first started with the Tribal fries. Â Um, yes these are a must if you want an appetizer. Â They are fries with cajun seasoning, caramelized onions, and yummy yummy cheese. Â All baked together. Â The ultimate appetizer. Â
By the time Olivia and I were putting our faces into these fries, our gyros came. Â I got the classic gyro, tomatoes, onions, and tzatiki sauce. Â Hard to pick it up and eat like a taco, so use a fork and knife and avoid getting it all over yourself. Â The lamb was great, not overly too greasy, the tomatoes, lettuce and onions were fresh. Â Yum.
The service was friendly and quick. Â Fun place to go. Â It's away from the hustle and bustle of bards town rd so you will be able to find a parking spot.
Easily the best gyros I've eaten in Louisville. We ordered the Hero's Gyros, which is just the traditional gyro with more meat piled on it. You'll need silverware to eat it even if you go easy on the toppings (which you get to choose). The meat (a combination of lamb and meat) is perfectly seasoned and juicy, and the pita bread is crisp on the bottom just the way I like it. The tzatziki sauce is good too. We also ordered the Persian felafel (they have regular felafel too but we wanted to try this dish as it seemed different from felafel you get other Middle Eastern places) - deliciously crispy with great flavor. The Persian Iced Tea was very good. Overall, a truly superb meal complemented by excellent service!! I highly recommend this place!
Review Source:My first trip to Zaytun and perhaps my last happened this week. The first thing that put me off was that the whole place was reeking of grilled fish the moment we walked through the door. Now that may not be enough to turn everyone off but for someone who is not that much of a fish person - eeeks ! Â
We didn't wan't be rude and just turn and leave , so we held our breath and decided to place an order to go ! Â
(1) Environment: ( I choose to call it that over "Ambiance" - makes it sound more heart-felt and spontaneous) --- This place gets a "1" star rating in this category thanks to the Fish.
(2) Food : Â I am quite the foodie so take this seriously.
I ordered a Falafel wrap. Â The Pita bread was definitely the store bought variety - a serious knock against a Mediterranean restaurant. Â If any of you believe I am taking this too far , let me ask you this - would you even think about going to an Indian place that serves you store bought Naans ? Â If the answer to the above is "yes" or "maybe" , let me be brutally honest - you are not qualified to write a review of a restaurant - period.
The Falafel itself was quite sad.  It was over fried on the outside and yet sticky on the inside as would be the case if the balls were made from  ready mix Falafel flour that you can buy in a box at Kroger.
The dressing was the only saving grace - the Tzatziki sauce was good, but then again, you don't pay $9 for a dollop of Tzatziki sauce - do you ?
So they get a score of "2" stars in the food category.
(3) Value for money: I will give them a  score of "3" here.
(4) Service: Average = "2"
Their overall score = (1+2+3+2) / 4 = 2 stars !
Super friendly service, good prices and tasty food. Total win. I also tried the one Greek Beer (name is slipping my mind, but should stand out on the menu). It was nice, light, and only 3.50.
I will have to get the hummus and gyro next time to have a comparable experience, but I had a special that had chicken that was incredibly spiced and tender - highly recommend it. It had lots of veggies and some sort of special rice and came in a big bowl that I almost finished it was so good. Convenient spot that is often overlooked. I'll definitely be back.
My wife and I visited Zaytun for the first time tonight. Â We weren't sure what to expect from the outside, but it has a very cozy bistro atmosphere on the inside. Â Our waitress was welcoming and informative. Â She was attentive without being instrusive. Â The food was very good with hearty portions. Â We had the tribal fries as an appetizer...which was fantastic. Â I can also definitely recommend the traditional gyro. Â Zaytun is an ideal place for a casual date or comfortable meal out.
Review Source:Ji-ro, Hero, Euro, what ever you call it, there is no way this restaurant is defaulting anytime soon!
This small venue, where you seat yourself, has the best Hummus in all of Louisville. I would eat the Phoenician hummus for every chick pea craving for the rest of my life! (No I am not being over dramatic, I'm being Greek and larger then life)
For a small staff, the service has always been quick and wonderful. The pricing is inexpensive and the portions are huge! You can customize your Gyro to your liking and they even carry your favorite Grecian dessert Baklava and have Greek Beer Imports to offer.
They even do Coke with real sugar cane and a glass bottle. Take Out or Eat In this is my favorite Greek.
I returned again for Gyros yesterday afternoon for a late lunch and was reminded of how much I like this place. Â Iced tea infused with Earl Gray like spices... so refreshing and unusual. Â
For my meal, I opted for a spicy (Tunisian) hummus gyro... All the Gyros are designed so that you pick your protein (my sweetie had the classic as he loves the traditional lamb and beef) and then choose from a menu of added toppings with 8 free choices (lettuce, onion, diced tomato, cucumber, black olives, banana peppers, jalapeno, fresh chopped parsley) and several others available for an additional charge. Â The sandwiches are served open faced and the presentation was so beautiful and colorful I hesitated to put the Tzatziki on top of mine... but it was so fresh and tasty I couldn't resist. Â We ate every last morsel and my sweetie literally licked his plate.
My only complaint here is that I was too full for one of their wonderful salads or awesome falafel. Â
The restaurant is clean and during the day the windows provide lots of light. Â The decor includes artful hangings and a flat screen tv.
We will definitely return and if you are in the neighborhood, I urge you to try this Mediterranean delight. Â
***Has vegetarian options.
After running the trails at Cherokee Park in 95 degree weather, I really needed a gyro. My salty body craved the coolness of cucumber and yogurt sauce. Not sure why this overwhelming craving came over me, but I'm not one to argue with my body because it actually has a history of making really great decisions about food.
I recently read about this place on a blog site (yay short-term memory) and we were in the vicinity so win-win. We had great service. It could have had something to do with the fact that we were the only people in the place but our waiter never failed to say "you're welcome" and "my pleasure" and even turned down the chanting music garble so he could hear me better :)
This is the first mediterranean restaurant that I have been in that lets you "build your own" gyro. You can select a protein (lamb, beef, chicken, fish) and the veg you want to accompany it. I had the traditional lamb and married it with lettuce, tomato, onion, and .....cucumber. I so wanted to try more toppings but I didn't want to end up with 1) something I couldn't fold to insert into my mouth and 2) a $15 gyro. The gyro was $7 and each addt'l topping was 99¢. I thought the topping charges were a bit pricey. I can get a whole cucumber for 50¢, however, because the pita it came on was the perfect temperature of warm, and the ribbons of lamb were seasoned to a salty-spicy perfection, and the veggies were summery fresh, I decided not to let the highway robbery upset my stomach. The tzatziki sauce, you know the one, the tangy yogurt/cucumber combo that always makes you think "why don't I eat this more often?" was deliciously cool and sprinkled with the most vibrant paprika, at least I think it was paprika.
We ordered the traditional hummus as well and it was good, very chickpea tasting, but needed a squirt of lemon and a sprinkle of salt to give it more flavor.
I so wanted to try the Persian ice cream but we were running out of time and belly space. I had to take half of mine home. I will be back Zaytun and I'm bringing the family.
Gyros- Thumbs uppity up.
Hummus- Thumbs up.
Service- Thumbs up.
I love this place. End of story. As someone who considers herself a gyro aficionado, I can't say enough about Zaytun. The food was just delicious. I've had their chicken gyros (with all of the fixings of course) and their lamb gyros, both were fantastic. Their basmati rice is a nice side order, but their Tribal Fries are like a spiritual experience. Â The quality of the ingredients and the effort put into cooking the food is noticeable with each bite.
The atmosphere is nice --clean, simple, comfortable. The service was competent, fast, and friendly.
We had the classic gyro and chicken gyro. Both were excellent, particularly the classic gyro. It isn't pita bread, but rather a "European Flatbread" that they use and it is a nice change of pace, but doesn't stray too far from pita to make it strange. Very fresh veggies (great Roma tomatoes), good feta and a very tasty. thick tzatziki sauce. The service could have been a bit friendlier but other than that it was a great lunch.
Review Source:After curiously driving past this place for a month, I had to try it for lunch. My mouth is glad I stopped in.
Food: We each had the Gyros with chicken on the 'European flat bread.' It was outstanding. We had our choice of toppings, and I went with tomato, lettuce, banana peppers, cucumbers, and the tzaziki sauce.
Atmosphere: The place is super clean, but a little echo-y...probably because it seems to have been recently built or refurbished inside. Lots of windows, and FREE WI-FI!
Overall, good food, very clean, and good service. We'll be back
