Really nice place with a good, chill atmosphere. Â Nice place fora date or for a lady to have a drink alone with out feeling like a weirdo or being harassed. Â Staff and owner are very friendly. Â Food is quite good, some dishes may be alittle expensive for what you get. Â The free wasabi nut-mix is great!
Review Source:I've been here twice now. The first experience was a casual afternoon bite over a beer at the bar. Not too much as far as expectations and my expectations were met.
I came here again a few weeks ago with my mother for lunch. I had a bloody mary (that was huge and delicios!) and a burger. My mom had a salad with grilled chicken and some other flair. The server was nice enough and we ordered and received our food pretty quickly.
My burger was fine, just what I'd expect from a burger. My mom's salad, however, was a disappointment. Her chicken was not juicy, but bone dry. We told the waiter and he agreed that just looking at the chicken, it was definitely dry and told us not to worry about it, he'd get it fixed right away. He asked what he could get her instead, and my mom pointed to the garden salad. He asked if she wanted shrimp on there, and my mom agreed.
Manager stopped by, apologized, and assured us the new salad was on the way. New salad came, was much better, all was well.
Then the bill came. Instead of the $12 or $14 salad we had originally ordered with the bone dry chicken, B Street charged us $21 FOR A SALAD. AT LUNCH! So we ended up paying extra for the inconvenience.. I don't get it.
Not cool, B Street.
Pros:
-cute restaurant
-server was nice
Cons:
-$3 for a soda that was mostly ice
-$16 for a burger that was very greasy, served on an English muffin (not in the description of the burger), and came with a limp, colorless tomato slice.
-pools of grease underneath the roasted potato wedges
-inattentive service
-slow food
-overpriced
-tacky signage in the windows
-hostess stand is in the back/middle of restaurant, so you walk through the restaurant and then walk right back to where you entered to sit down
-weird smell
-not a great variety of food
I'm surprised they're still in business.
Terry's is better and cheaper for pub food, the Station Diner is better and cheaper for a nice lunch, and Sandwich Works is cheaper for the same quality.
Been here twice in the past 2 months. The first time was okay for me, me GF liked it. Tonight we returned she had the trout she liked it. I had their huge burger. I wanted their filet mignon or chicken but out of both of them. They tell me the delivery truck never arrived. I can't imagine there's no butcher near by to pick these these things up. Anyway, the burger was big, tasty but over cooked, English muffin was raw, and the pickle has limp and flat. We decided after just 2 times that we won't be returning.
Review Source:Right in the thick of Newton Center lies B Street, a quasi-upscale restaurant serving lunch and dinner during the week and brunch on the weekends. I've been a longtime nemesis of brunch, mostly because I'm a grump, and also because I'm supposed to pay how much for a pile of pancakes? But many restaurants are now serving my beloved burger on brunch menus, which is just enough enticement to get me out of my sweatpants and into the car on a Sunday morning. Startlingly priced at $16.50, the 'Burger Benedict' is a 10 oz. burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, a fried egg and an Old Bay hollandaise. The side of roasted potatoes is also hit with Old Bay, and the burger and potato combination at least sounds appealing on paper. The goal with this burger is clearly a spin on the classic eggs benedict, right down to the English Muffin bun. A 10 oz. burger is probably larger than anyone needs, especially for brunch and the B Street burger was impressive in stature, the poor English Muffin bun barely stood a chance. Russell House Tavern is the only other example I can think of that uses an English Muffin as a burger bun, and does so very successfully. Unfortunately for B Street, the burger is far too thick and heavy; it does nothing short of crushing and eventually disintegrating the poor attempt of a bun. After cutting into the burger, I am pleased to see a gorgeous medium rare center, a skill easy to overlook especially with a burger of this size. But the beef is very, very bland and is low on the juiciness scale. Could be a lack of salt, but more likely it's a lean burger with not much to it. The bacon is limited and only offers pools of grease, although the hollandaise is pleasant and a bright aspect of the meal. My fried egg is just runny, which I like, but the plate ends up looking like a massacre of broken pieces of beef, chunks of English Muffin and a river of hollandaise and bacon grease. It's not exactly well crafted or well executed, and structurally it's sort of a disaster. The roasted potatoes are very scarce, ironic that they skimped on potatoes but over-did it with the amount of beef. They are very under-seasoned and I can't detect the Old Bay whatsoever.
Messy burgers can be great, but generally speaking not a lot of thought is being put into the construction of the burger, a critical mistake. Ultimately the B Street burger is a miss because of bland beef and potatoes, a very high price tag especially considering it's in the 'burbs, and an English Muffin bun that could be the worst choice possible here. I hate to admit it, but a brioche bun in this situation would have been a far better choice.
This isn't about the food. We weren't treated well enough to want to have food there. The tiny little alley-sized restaurant was empty before 5pm. Literally, there wasn't a customer in there. When we asked to sit at a specific table, we were told we'd have to wait for them to check their reservations. And so we waited. And waited. It felt kind of silly standing there in an empty restaurant waiting to see if a table is available. From there it just got worse with a most unwelcome feeling and shabby treatment by the waitstaff. The place is way too small for any kind of private conversation or enjoyment. I expect we will see something new there soon.
Review Source:With Jake's Falafel Corner on temporary holiday, we found ourselves at the old pie place for lunch one weekday. Â It was a bit fancier than expected due to its origins, but it was quite nice and the service was pleasant.
Menu prices were a bit more than we expected to spend for our day time meal, but while the soup (Maple Butternut Squash Bisque $6) seriously tempted me, we ended up splitting the Roasted Turkey & Brie Sandwich on Sourdough or Wheat (Turkey Breast, Brie, Sliced Honey Crisp Apples, Apple Butter, Coarse Mustard, Arugula) $12 and the Roasted Red Pepper Quiche, Caramelized Onions, Cheddar, Mixed Green Salad $10.
Each entree was accompanied by the same simple light salad mentioned in the menu beside the quiche. Â The food was fine, but nothing particularly outstanding. Â We cleaned our plates and left satiated.
Discover is not an accepted form of payment. Â They offer $2 oysters on Wednesday evenings.
I would give this spot 4.5 stars based on our recent Wednesday night dinner experience. By the time we came in around 6:30, the place was pretty full and we ended up grabbing some drinks at the bar while we waited for a table. The bartender was friendly and accommodating, even swapping out my cocktail for another when I didn't love my original choice.
Once seated, the service was good too: prompt, meticulous, and professional. Our server seemed a bit run-down, but was courteous and friendly enough. The proprietor was on the floor as well, taking care of patrons.
Everything we ordered was delicious, and the presentation elegant. The shaved winter vegetables salad was beautiful and original, dressed simply (oil, lemon, etc). Loved the tuna app, the short rib quesadilla (definitely a meal's worth on its own), and the flatbread. Lamb chops were delicious too.
A great neighborhood spot! Would definitely come back (which, in the end, is what tells you the most--right?)
Took my brother here for a birthday dinner. It's a cute little spot, that has a cozy bar. We sat at the bar and our bartender was super friendly. The food was delicious- we both left full, and happy. I would recommend this spot, and I wound up there because of a http://restaurant.com gift certificate. After my first, trip, I bought another g.c. and I will be back!
I'd be interested to check out the music scene as I hear that they have live music sometimes. I couldn't really visualize that in the space, but I think that it adds something to a traditional night out.
We stopped into this neighborhood bar and bistro for a quick dinner. Â The three beet salad beautiful with nice variety in the beets and some tasty mache. Â The shaved winter veggies looked beautiful and had good flavor, but the presentation made for some challenge in cutting thin veggies into smaller, mouth-sized bites. Â A hummus plate offered the title dish with some lemony zing, and the mussels were rich and brothy. Â Good bread all around, with a yummy garlic olive oil. Â Worth stopping in.
Review Source:Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I had a poor experience at B Street. Â I was invited last minute to join my friend's family for Sunday brunch. Â When I arrived at B Street, although I didn't particularly enjoy their taste in decor (rather kitschy in my opinion), I appreciated that they were trying to do something nice.
Our party of five sat down and the waiter did not bring us water or menus until we asked for them. Â That was when I knew things would be off. Â In a place that is charging $10+ for drinks and $15-25+ for meals, they should bring you a glass of water. Â They should also being menus to your table considering it is a restaurant. Â Once I got my water I had to ask for a food menu- I found it strange that the waiter only brought water/menus to the party members who explicitly asked for it.
I opened the menu and the design made it hard to read. Â The incompetant waiter took our order and instead of using a pad an pen, he opted to try to memorize everyone's choices. Â I saw him struggle to remember when he was putting the orders into the computer and knew we were destined for more problems.
The order took a long time to come out (~20 mins) and he forgot mine! AND I had the most simple thing- a breakfast sandwich. Â My dish finally came out and of course it was wrong. Â First, the presentation was poor. Â The bagel the sandwich came on was upside down. Â I next noticed that there was wilty hot lettuce on the sandwich and no mention of that on the menu. Â I opened the sandwich and saw that it was missing tomatoes and for some reason had mayonnaise on it- I know everyone here loves a bacon, egg and chese with lettuce and mayo...
Service was poor, my dish was prepared VERY differently from the menu description and for the quality I experienced, I thought the prices were a bit outrageous.
B Street has potential. Â I'm sure the tasteless Newton ladies like to get a bite there on the way back from Chico's at the Chestnut Hill Mall, but for those of us with taste and product/service standards this place is not worth it.
I gave this place a 2/5 because although they had terrible service, a kitschy appearance and a pricey/difficult to read menu, the rest of my party enjoyed their food. Â I would not go back.
I've been to B Street a few times and returned yesterday for brunch and was pleasantly surprised. Brunch is a dicey business for me. Sometimes I feel like breakfast and sometimes I feel like lunch. Â And B Street didn't disappoint. It offered both wonderful breakfast options (omelets, quiche, popovers filled with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon) and solid lunch options (chicken and barley soup, chicken salad, burger hollandaise). The beer selection is impressive even though there is no draft beer.
The decor at B is over-the-top and streamlined at the same time with giant pink drum shade chandeliers and cool art. Our bartender was warm and sweet - nice on a Sunday morning. Then, as I took my first sip of wine, a piano player started to play - to me this is most welcome at brunch-time: jazzy Christmas tunes (tis the season), pop favorites, a terrifically competent Moonlight Sonata. And then, lo and behold, the food - really excellent. My bacon and eggs were perfectly done, the toast and potatoes tasty. My husband's soup was rich and satisfying and his tuna melt with salad was perfect.
We'll go there again soon and order more daringly now that I know that they can cover the basics. Nice spot.
My fiance and I had dinner at B Street Friday night. Â We live in Brighton and were happy to find a place that was not super crowded on a Friday night. Â The restaurant was full but not bursting at the seams. Â The atmosphere was nice, good lighting and someone singing and playing piano later in the evening. Â Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Â I noticed a good mixture of ages dining here too. Â Now, for the food...
We started with cocktails: a Newton Mule and a Manhattan. The Mule was served in a fun copper mug and was very tasty ($12). I was a little disappointed with the selection of entrees and they did not have any specials...really? We both decided on ordering wedge salads to start ($10) which were good but hard to mess up. The serving size was generous. Now for the best part. We ordered appetizers for our meal, the duck confit flat bread and the mussels ($14-$16). The flat bread was large enough for an entre with goat cheese, pom seeds and crisp lettuce. The duck was tender and rich. The mussels were delicious and were in a mustard cream sauce that was so good you had to dip the equally good grilled bread in. Overall, I think this spot is good for a low key date night spot with little wait time and great service. The menu is good but lacks some flair.
I really would love to love this place. A place for adults is just what Newton Centre needs. Too bad we have B Street.
I would imagine whoever designed the menu thought of doing a sophisticated take on comfort food. When I looked at it, I thought it was trying too hard. I love sophisticated takes on dishes, but I'm not sure who thought that pomegranate on duck was a good idea. We tried it. It wasn't.
It's nice when you don't feel rushed while dining. B Street certainly didn't rush us! Actually, we were sort of ignored. We weren't in a rush, though. Too bad they didn't at least take our drink orders before leaving us to wither.
This place was such a surprise! I go to the yoga studio next door and walk by B Street all the time and finally tried it when my dad and boyfriend were both in town. We had excellent meals and great service. The menu was diverse and prices were reasonable. I had the duck two ways, boyfriend had a mushroom bolognese special and dad had the salmon tartare appetizer. I'm confident all of us loved our food. The place is small and quiet enough to carry on a conversation with a man who has lost his hearing over the years! I'll be back for sure.
Review Source:The best burger around the town!
The other day, I wanted to treat a friend there and we ordered burgers. While waiting for the food, we had such a nice conversation that we didn't even notice that the food was a bit late in coming. When they finally served the food, the waiter profusely apologized for the delay, and even offered the meal for free!
It doesn't hurt either that the food there is top notch. Probably the best of its kind in Newton.
I came here with my brother for lunch. I was already a fan because they had a variety of music from the 60's-the 80's in the background. I ordered the quiche, which was quite good and my brother ordered their version of a BLT w/ a fried egg in it and he loved it.
I thought the service could have been a bit faster.. we could have used a refill on our drinks. Also, the side potatoes that came with our entrees tasted undercooked.
All in all, a good experience ans we would come back for the food.
My family came here for brunch. We ordered a smoked salmon bagel, a scrambled egg with smoked salmon and granola.
The smoked salmon was off. Not a little off. Overtly off. It stank. We called the waiter over and sent it back. The waiter said "I can assure you all our food is delivered fresh." Um...no. If it is, then you're not refrigerating it properly. Remarkably, our complaint was not enough to get a manager to come over. The waiter came back and offered us a different meal...as though we would actually want something else from their kitchen.
Only when the waiter sensed our disgust did the manager come over. He did not (to the best of my knowledge) check the food. He just said "we'll check with our vendors." A few minutes later the diners at the next table sent their breakfast back because there was hair in the cooked food.
These are basic hygiene and food safety issues.
Oh...and the service was slow. And the value was poor: a smoked salmon bagel comprises a toasted bagel and (foul-smelling) fish. No capers, no tomatoes, no onions. Â I asked for honey with my granola ...and I'm still waiting. I'll not be coming back.
After hearing great things about brunch at B Street from the Globe, I thought I'd give this a try. Â It was ok. Â Had difficultly finding something on the menu that looked interesting but gave the spinach pie a try, my spouse got the salmon rachel. Â The spinach pie was ordinary, the rachel was pretty good. Â The potatoes were criminally undercooked and practically inedible.
The service was a bit slow...we had empty glasses on the table for far too long...
It was a bit too expensive to be just ok.
I came here for date night with my boyfriend. Given our graduate student budgets we normally wouldn't be able to dine in Newton Centre but I purchased a Groupon after hearing good reviews.
The place was cozy, elegant, and not too loud. We arrive at 8pm on a Friday night and enjoyed a drink at the bar while we waited for a table. Our waitress brought us (fresh!) bread which tasted like Iggys (yum!) For dinner I ordered the Rainbow Trout which was really excellent. The basil sauce it was in was incredible and the roasted vegetables were delicious. My boyfriend ordered the lamb chops, which he wasn't too thrilled with. I think he's used to bigger portions and a more Greek style lamp chop, cooked rare.
We had a really nice time for a relaxed, elegant date night. Candice was a great server and having JP Licks nearby made for a perfect ending! Unfortunately we won't be able to return as frequently due to our budget but I would definitely purchase another Groupon and recommend highly to others!
I don't like to give a 1 star review and i honestly think that this restaurant could merit so much more, but my experience with B street was a long series of disappointments.
For the quick reviewer with more details below

- only bought half of the desserts
It started over a month ago when i made a reservation for 10, and double checked that it would not be an issue, as i was trying to get a group of people together. Â I made the reservation and went ahead with letting everyone know when and where. Â about a week week and a half later, after i have already confirmed with everyone, i get a message from Jackie telling me that they cannot honor my reservation as they are now overbooked. Â She was more than willing to let us come in at 5 but they had another reservation at 6:30 Â that needed the table. Â I was more than a little confused that they would ask 10 people to be done in less than an hour and a half. Â I told her i would call back.
I called back, at a later date, Â to find out if they could accommodate a party of 7 only to find out that they had deleted our other reservation, but could do this one. Â
When we arrived we were seated at a table that was clearly only meant for 6 people with one person stuck on the end banquet with only half of a table in front of him, told cant put a chair at the end because of fire hazard. Only people he would block is the people he was already blocking on the banquet. However i do not setup the fire codes so i cannot argue, though i would not have put a large group there in the first place then.
Our server Jennifer was very nice though not always the most attentive server. Â Water glasses sat empty at the table for long stretches and often only refilled when someone at the table mentioned it to her. Â Empty glasses were left on the table even when refills were brought, not always a huge issue but when already at a cramped table it became one.
We ordered several apps(awesome crab cakes and wings, salmon tartar was ok) to share at the table, including the one of the new chefs specials (short rib flat bread). Apps arrived minus the chefs special. waitress apologized and said that the chef was also sending out the smoked salmon special in addition as an apology. One member the party had to excuse herself to remove a fish bone that became caught in her throat.
After the apps were being cleared the server finally got our entree order. Â The server specifically mentioned that my friends Medium steak would take 20 minutes, something that i feel would have been less of an issue had the order been taken before hand.
Dinners arrived and my Med Rare steak was Med going on Med well. Â neither steak came with the Cipollini Onions that the menu stated. Â The Server said she would have them make another one. Â Every one else ate, and ate, and finished. was told twice by the server and once by the manager that it would be out in "a few minutes more" Â after 30 minutes we cancelled the steak as everyone else was done and was ready for dessert. Â
I need to add that among the reasons given for the time was "its such a thick piece of steak", they can do med in 20, I don't see why MR takes longer, and "all of our meat is cooked from raw" i would certainly hope that all of your meat is raw before you cook it.
Manager stopped by again to apologize and offered us dessert on the house as an apology, except that after getting home i find that they only took off half of the desserts and charged us for the rest. Â And while I knew it would be, i always find it rude when the Server doesn't tell you that gratuity is included on the bill.
Sadly i could have excused any one or even a few of these mistakes but the combination of so many problems, and on a Sunday night, was just too much for me.
OK, I love "Best ____" lists and signature dishes -- so since the Globe's 45 Best Breakfast Joints in the Sunday mag, the cover dish has been high on my list. Â (Btw the B Street is not a breakfast joint but a very comfy, cozy, and, even slightly elegant bistro.)
I am glad to report that the breakfast flatbread was worth the buildup, and the B Street was an overall delight. Â Three fried eggs, roasted garlic, mozzarella, potatoes, and bacon on a nicely baked, crisp and chewy flatbread had that combination of flavors and textures that makes food so much fun. Â Salt, warm, comfort, crunch, goo. Â And it was beautiful.
Now I recently spent 4 days eating my way across Charleston, SC and I thought the shrimp'n'grits at the Hominy Grill was about the best contrast/flavor orgy I'd ever had. Â The flatbread was to diner breakfasts what the shrimp'n'grits was to low country brunch. Â Well-designed, satisfying, and a cut above the rest.
Now, I was alone, sat at the bar, and didn't sample anything else (the coffee was only eh). Â But the B Street gets 5 stars because (a) I went for the flatbread and it met expectations and (b) Lauren, the comely blonde barperson, shared her Etta James Pandora station with us all. Â Otis Redding, Platters, *and* Dion & the Belmonts. Â What better way to start the afternoon. Â Now if they'd add an arugula salad to their egg-heavy brunch menu, maybe I can get my wife to join me next time.
I was going to give this restaurant 4 stars but after reading a few of the lame reviews below I pumped it up.
We went here last weekend for a date night. Â I hadn't been in since the renovation from Pie. Â I think they did an amazing job. Â The decor is warm and comfortable. Â Real candles are spread out in the room instead of the LED lights you see everywhere now.
We were seated quickly and the waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. Â We had a great glass of wine. Â Lucky Strike?
The best part was the food. Â We had the mussels which were perfect and large. Â They were PEI mussels which are wonderful. Â Â The salad was great. Â I had the swordfish. Â At $27 the price is up there but it is expensive fish. Â It was cooked perfectly and the sides were excellent. Â We had coffee and the strawberry rhubarb pie for dessert. Â Â I thought it was a little too sweet but ate it all anyway... Â The coffee could have been better.
We will definitely return to try more menu choices.
I've been 3 times and I've trying to figure it out. It's inconsistent for sure. My second meal there was very good (and more app than entree; the turkey, butternut squash chilli was amazing, especially on a winter night). The first and third meals, not so much. I found the burger underwhelming and served on a English muffin! how lame!
It is also very pricey given the quality. I feel there are better restaurants in Newton that can justify that mid to high $20 entree price.
It's a small, cute restaurant in busy Newton Centre. The bar is a bit awkward if you have to stand due to the kitchen traffic flow and the narrow space. I've found the staff to be friendly; I always appreciate a taste of the wine before springing for a glass.
I'm not sure I'll visit again given what Newton has to offer.
I've been here for breakfast/brunch twice. Once was with a Living Social/Groupon for the place and the other time it was just to try it out. I have to say that it wasn't anything over the top. It was nice, and the prices were typical for the area. It is a bit small, but that comes with the territory. It is a nice change between Johnys or Union Street. And I'd go here before I'd go to the Station Dinner, which is very over-priced...unless you like paying extra for "steam punk".
Good Job B street, love the brunch choice selection.
I went here last night with my other half and it was good. Jackie was our server and she was friendly, personable, and attentive. I asked for a fun nonalcoholic drink and she was very accommodating checking with the bartender for some suggestions. I ended up with a faux-hito which I was happy with. For my entree, I got the half chicken with greens and rice, the chicken was very tender and came out promptly unlike what I have read from other reviews. I just wish the skin was crispier. Â
The prices were a little steeper than what I was expecting based on a quick glance at Yelp before heading over, but it's a trendy little place in Newton so I shouldn't have been that surprised. Â I'll check this place out again, service was great, food selection a little eclectic for my taste, probably not a regular go to for me.
I came upon this restaurant after my wife purchased a group-on. Â We decided to use it for brunch on a Sunday morning (11am). Â The ambiance is very cozy, its a small restaurant / bar. Â We were seated near the window. Â The service was very friendly and hospitable, however they seemed stretched thin. Â We spent alot of time waiting for our food and refills for drinks. Â The slow service was really a reflection on how low staffed they are. Â They only had two waitresses, a bartender, an a hostess. Â At one point the hostess was running around refilling drinks. Â
Although the service was slow, the food was very good. I had the egg and steak quesadilla and it was very good. Â The food really helped even out the slow service.
After seeing this restaurant on the Phantom Gourmet website I was excited and hopeful despite some not-so-good comments on here. Overall this is just an "OK" restaurant. I would not visit this place again... I will list out my reasoning below.
1. After we placed our drink order - two Strawberry Fields martinis, Â (a signature drink from the menu) - and waited at LEAST 10 Â minutes for our drinks - our server came over to tell us they couldn't make it because they were out of the fruit needed to make it. I would rather have known that a minute or two after we ordered, not 10. We then went to order another signature drink - "B Street" Mango Margarita, but they were out of that too. After deciding on a normal cocktail, it took another 10 minutes to get the drinks.
2. I ordered the Roasted Red Pepper and Goat Cheese Ravioli dish only to be told they were out of the asparagus for the dish. (we also ordered a side of it too) - so I asked them to substitute a different vegetable. Our server returned to the table 5 minutes later to inform me they had in fact found some asparagus. Finally, right before our meals came out another server approached out table to tell us that he had just dropped the last of the asparagus on the floor - and I would not be getting any asparagus. They never put another vegetable in my dish. Needless to say, my dish was not very tasteful at all. It was definitely something I could make (probably better) on my own at home. My husband ordered the Chargrilled 12 ounce Sirloin and enjoyed it.
3. After checking my bank statement a couple days later, Â I realized they charged my card twice.
There were a few good things - but nothing good enough to have me return
1. The side dish of mac and cheese was pretty tasty.
2. The pumpkin hummus appetizer was pretty good.
3. As mentioned before, my husband enjoyed his entre
Delicious, yes. Not perfect, but delicious.
In my designated "new kid in town" period, I take my duties seriously and try any restaurant that strikes my fancy. When the orientation at school got overwhelming, the ladywife and I wandered down the hill into "town." Based on menus alone, we picked B Street a bit before the rush.
In terms of brunch, this place heats up fast. Go early if you need a quiet space or a bigger bubble. Personal space isn't an issue for me, but I'm also from the South.
Moving into the food! (That's what we're here for, isn't it?) I enjoyed a salad that was fairly fresh, but the lettuce (iceburg) had some of those yucky core bits that should really be removed and fed to the compost pile. Their in-house buttermilk dressing was out of this world! The dressing made up for the weird lettuce. I wanted to lick the plate, but that would be downright uncouth. My wife said the frittata was better than what she could make at home, with perfectly cooked eggs and crisp veggies. B Street served a generous portion, too.
Around us, people were ordering french toast, oatmeal, and melon plates that all looked drool-worthy. Were I a breakfast fan, I would have been all over the french toast. Really, brunch is more my speed.
The other note that is well-posted but seems to elude everyone is that only a specific menu is served during brunch hours. Lots of folks trickled in, were seated, and walked out after a glance at the menu. When a restaurant posts their menu outside, it's really the fault of the patron for not bothering to glance around before they waltz in. So! Take notes! Special brunch-only menu on weekends until dinner!
The service was hovering somewhere between average and excellent. Our server was in and out of paying attention; when she was on, she was really on. When she wandered off, she disappeared for a long time. I'm not sure what the plan was there. There was also a small snafu with the price of our meal. When I pointed it out to our server, the manager was quick to fix it. (The menu quoted one price, and our check reflected another. I asked for the menu price. Politely, of course. Good Southern girl and all.)
Through no fault of the restaurant, I left feeling like a country mouse. Brunch in Bostonia certainly is a different beast than brunch in my New Orleans!
Accessibility notes: Door opens in. Tables are close together for mobility devices. Restaurant gets loud at peak hours. No braille menu or signage.
This place is cute (and so are the staff). Classy digs. I came here for brunch with a couple friends. The crowd's older people, and we were getting lots of looks for being 20 (and perhaps slightly obnoxious and underdressed).
I have no complaints about this place! The food was alright. My friend's french toast was really tasty- cut thick, covered in syrup, with really tasty caramelized apples. I had a egg, bacon, and tomato bagel that was fine. Glad they didn't use huge gigantic bagels. My friend remarked that my dish was on the small side, but I'm not used to eating huge American portions (go to Johnny's or Deluxe for that) anyway. My other friend got a fruit plate- which was well presented, but pricey for what it was, in my opinion.
Would love to come back here to drink one night.
Could a cute little bistro be more appropriately targeted to the population of Newton Centre? Â I think not.
B Street is a perfect fit for this little nook on Beacon St., with cute cafe salads, gourmet sandwiches, comfy seating, welcoming decor, and a full bar. Â I had a burger, perfectly cooked to medium rare, with some pretty amazing caramelized onions on top and served with a side of spicy ketchup. Â They do this burger up RIGHT. Â I would eat it seven days a week and twice on tuesday, if it weren't, you know, full of stuff thats bad for you and such. Â But super tasty.
My table companions also enjoyed the chicken & brie sandwich, the turkey basil club, and the tomato bisque. Â I would strongly recommend any of these items. Â You will not regret eating a meal here.
We were on out way to the Deluxe Station Diner, when we got detoured by B Street. Â Lured in by a couple eating a breakfast flatbread pizza in the window, my friend and I abandoned the Deluxe and headed in. Â
The restaurant was packed, but they managed to find us a hightop tucked in the back. Â It was a tight squeeze between chairs but I figured out a way to pull myself right up to the table and it was okay. Â We ordered our coffees and after some debate about who should get the breakfast flatbread and who should try something else, we settled the argument by both getting the flatbread. Â
Unfortunately almost 30 minutes passed between putting in our order and getting our food. Â I get that there are always some kinks to work out in the first few weeks of business, but 30 minutes?? Â Thankfully when we did eventually get our flatbreads, they were delicious, the combination of mozzarella, garlic, roasted potatoes and 3 runny eggs on top--heaven, although a bit pricey at $10 a pop. Â
The only other thing I thought was weird was that it was 11am and the TVs were on to ESPN. Â There weren't any important games on or anything, it was just background noise-- made it seem a little more bar-like which threw me off just a bit that early in the morning. Â
Anyway, the space is cool, modern and well done and Newton Center definitely needs an alternative to Union Street. Â So although I don't know that B Street has found a new devotee, I will certainly be back-- if not for a drink, definitely for one of their breakfast flatbreads.
Stopped in here randomly, turned out to be opening night. The bar was real busy, but there was an open booth for us.
Nothing on tap, at least on that first day, but they had Shipyard Export in bottles so this beer lover was happy. I got the wedge salad for a starter which was good, but my dinner companion picked the short rib quesadilla, which was outstanding.
I had the cider brined pork chop with apple butter for a main, and it was about the best thing you could ask for on a snowy Friday night. Came with brussels sprouts, which were perfectly cooked although not my favorite thing in the world, and a really good squash side. Really good meal at a great price, this sort of place was badly needed in Newton Center.
