I was visiting Boston from San Diego and a couple people recommended this place to me. Â It was right off the Green Line which was super convenient because I didn't have a rental car. Â It was such a happening spot, especially for a hotel restaurant! Â My friend and I had a glass of wine before we were seated, we got to meet and chat with some locals who frequent the place and they tipped us off with some "must haves" on the menu. Â They were right....the Ahi Nachos were the bomb.....we split those and then I got the Filet with Fois Gras and it was TDF (to die for)! Â The server had recommended the perfect wine to compliment my meal....I unfortunately can't remember the name of the wine. Â The server was very attentive and really knowledgeable with the wines and they kept the table really neat....looking at empty plates or glasses on my table is a huge pet peeve. Â After dinner a tall gentleman (I think his name was Jay) in a suit came to make sure that we were happy with our experience. He was very personable and seemed like he really cared about our dinner experience. Â He recommended dessert, but after all that Fois Gras and Filet....I was way too full to eat anymore so I just enjoyed a cup of coffee. Â This was a great experience, the place is a HIDDEN GEM! Â I will definitely be back to enjoy a few cocktails at the pool!
Review Source:This restaurant is moderately price with a good selection on the menu. I tend to go for the seafood here, I find the shrimp are particularly large and just always a good texture and flavor. I have friends who rave about the breakfast items and wanted me to give the brunch a shout out. This place is definitely worth a try if you are in the area.
Review Source:Had breakfast twice and one late dinner here while staying at the hotel. Service here is awesome very accommodating to special request. The staff is a can do group that offers a smile that is rarely seen these days.
Breakfast was served hot and very reasonably priced for a hotel. All eggs and bacon cooked to perfection.
Dinner menu is really creative and thorough. We had mussels and the sirloin tips along with a side of grilled broccoli. I wasn't crazy about the sauce so the waiter took the steak of the bill. The mussels exceeded expectation.
We will be back when in the area.
I wrote this review it was posted and then was gone?
I wrote an email describing how disappointing Mothers
Day Brunch was at BOX 109 to every email address on their web site with no response:
Both my wife and I have been to both the restaurant for dinner and the bar for drinks and appetizers on many occasions. So when the restaurant was recommended on the Newton Patch web page we thought it would be a good time. The cost was a little high for adults but knowing the quality of the food and service we had in the past we didn't hesitate. The problem is we got there about 1:30 and the place was a mess.
The food was poorly stocked. No plates and help. Although you had a lot of staff on they were all eating and drinking at tables near the bar and not interested in anything but. When i called for a reservation I was even offered 2:30. At that point it was pretty much closed.
We paid our bill $245 for two adults and three children with 20% for our server for what amounted to a few omelets, sausage and some treats.Antipasto display missing, salad station, u expect to be able to make ur own salad, no smoked salmon display w/ capers, chives, red onions & hard boiled eggs, it was just some hot plate, the pest glazed salmon, no French toast stix, no cinabun pops, no breakfast potato skin Benedict , no ham quiche, no frittata w/ sausage, onions, peppers & provolone, prime rib looked like had never gone near any sort of heat, no horseradish popovers, no pastries, said "classic Caesar salad" on website, someone put anchovi dressing ON salad, no croutons, no Parmesan, no cured meats, no spring vegetables, no artisanal cheese, no muffins, no Danish, no croissants, no eggs Benedict w/ hollandaise sause, no pancakes, no chicken Marsala w/ mushroom spinach Marsala sauce, no roasted mustard crusted pork loin & no roasted potatoes, no cannolis.  I am not the type of person to complain or even mention a problem with a restaurant. Mostly we just never go back and if asked about a place we have had an issue with let our friends know. But this really was so out of character for the type of restaurant and quality we have had there. Our server was the only professional aspect of our day.
As much as I enjoyed my stay at Indigo, I did not enjoy our breakfast. We only ate here on our last morning there.
There was no one in the front when we got there so we walked in almost halfway before we were asked if we needed to be seated. We only ordered a toasted bagel and an omelet and it took almost half an hour to get our food. When I got my bagel, it was burnt at the edges. Whenever I looked towards their kitchen area I saw employees just hanging out and never once did anyone come over to check how we were doing or to ask if we needed more orange juice.
Yes, indigo hotel MAY look like a holiday inn, but it is not. Â Look at its clientele - very sharply dressed, they really nailed the Sunday casual look. Â I want all of their clothes!
Bokx - it was a slow Sunday morning when my boyfriend and I ventured there. Â This came highly recommended and we were not disappointed. Â Amazing food and brunch typically underwhelms me as it is often a waste time and money. Â Their selection is very inventive and just plain great - healthy but tasty options, some of the options are just plain tasty. Â I don't understand the bad reviews - I think everyone just had a shitty Valentine's day there, but guys, give this place a chance! Â They have a full bar! Â The quality of food (and I personally know this) is due to quality ingredients and a skillful chef.
Friends and I came here as it was one of the few places that was open Easter Sunday. I will say the decor and ambiance was beautiful. The food was mediocre at best. My friend and I both had the swordfish with risotto and our dishes were different. Mine was good, but my friends swordfish and risotto were overly salty. My other friends dish was also overly salty and was not prepared as ordered. Mind you, the place had two other people there so I can't say they were busy. Overall, the food was okay, but I will not be coming back here. For the price of their food, I was disappointed.
Review Source:What an amazing dining experience! Â The chef really knows what he's doing....I had the tuna nacho appetizer and the scallop entree and everything was cooked to perfection! Â The cotton candy at the end was just cool! Â It was a busy atmosphere but not too busy!!!!! Â It's a must try!!! Â I can't want for the outdoor area to open in the summer!!!
Review Source:Went this past valentines day, so this may be a bad judge as maybe they were extra busy. But from this visit I won't be back. So many more wonderful places people for this price or better than will excite your taste buds more so than Bokx.
Started off with hostess offering tastes of expensive wine that wasn't that great, but it was cute being pink and all if your a lady who likes the fru fru things. They were also pimpin some bracelets your date could have been suckered into buying for you. Nothing like pressure if this is someone new. That would have made me so uncomfortable 10 years ago on a date. Bad bad marketing idea. (I'm in marketing).
Started off with a wonderful martini that was stuffed with blue cheese and prosciutto, but I honestly didn't take the meat. It was still a darn well made martini though. Waitress was nice, but feel like the kitchen was overwhelmed, so was the bar because we waited pretty  long for everything.
I will only comment on what I ate, not my date, because I didn't eat his meal ;o)
I started with the beet salad with the warm goat cheese. It was good. No better or worse than beet salads I've had in the past. Though I only got 2 slivers of beet, so that was strange as I got a honkin piece of cheese. Maybe they were running low on beets.
For dinner I had the scallops (Seared Scallops, Cauliflower, bacon, brussel sprouts,
gnocchi, maple cream). I have to say, the sauce was AMAZING. But that was all. I was sad, but waited so long for my cold dinner, I just wanted to get out! The scallops were so burnt I couldn't bite through them. I ended up cutting the bottoms off, and leaving the burnt circle nuggets off to the side. Then the meal was edible and good. But for 30+ I don't think having to cut off the burnt, not charred bottoms was acceptable. But I didn't want to ruin Valentines, and the sauce was good, plus I hate sending food back. Hate it. And again, I was very hungry and dipping the brussel sprouts in that sauce was so delicious. I can't say enough about that sauce people. Only reason it this is getting 2 stars. 2 star sauce right there.
Lastly was dessert. Thank god I had hand rolled truffles at home. They need a new pastry chef. I had the brownie sundae. The brownie was tasteless and the dessert was not good. It was pretty. Well plated, creative, but they need to focus more on taste with that dessert. Terrible.
I won't be back unless it's for the bar food. I went once before for just drinks and their fries and onion rings were good.
What do you get if you put a very average steakhouse inside a very average, suburban  Holiday Inn?  I had read so much hype about BOKX 109 that I truly expected cuisine on a par with the area's best steakhouses, which to me would include Abe and Louie's, Mooo, Capital Grille and the like in downtown Boston.  What I found was a typically drab Holiday Inn restaurant featuring a variety of cuts of meat and a few seafood entrees.  The house Pino Noir I started with was OK, though a bit stale.  The gold and red beet salad reminded me why I only eat red beets, but the piece de resistance, the prime rib, which they sell as three samples of beef: a traditional small piece of prime rib, a short rib, and some shaved beef.  I'm not going to say the meat started to whinny when I stuck it with a fork, but I will say that considering the mid-town pricing I expected better.  The waitress, who I had to send a search party for, was busy with a large table and only came to see me when I sent a water boy after her.  When asked if there was a baked potato available she told me my dinner came with a small dollop of mashed potatoes, but I opted for a side of fingerling potatoes, which in retrospect, were unnecessary and less than remarkable.  I can only hope the beds in this Holiday Inn are better than the food, but more likely than not, it's the lumps from the beds that made the mashed potatoes so average and lumpy.  So I'll chalk  this place up as a great place to send people I don't like and avoid it myself forever.
Review Source:I work in the area, and often meet clients here on the patio for drinks in the summer or send my boss to Hotel Indigo to stay because of the location - so I was severely underwhelmed to say the least. Â
To start on a good note, we went in for dinner on Valentine's Day with no reservations; so I was expecting a wait, and being in the hospitality industry, I also expected a extended/delayed service because of the popularity of the night.  They took us right away for dinner, no questions asked, to which I was quite pleased.  The restaurant was packed, but we did get a wonderful table in a back room where it was pretty quiet, and didn't feel too overcrowded.  The pre-fix menu for the evening was a great price, 4 courses for $65 was  fantastic for what was being offered.  The amuse came out hot and fresh, very tasty.  The asparagus and white truffle soup was a dream.  The filet and foie was absolutely fantastic, and I could cut it with my butter knife it was so tender (good thing too), and the chocolate souffle was sinful and light.  For food, this place is really delicious 4-5 stars all the way.  So I tip my hat to the chef for that!
I was not however expecting it to take 3 HOURS to get through dinner for 2 people!!
Things started off fine, but went down hill quickly. Â It took our server almost 30 minutes to get us a mojito, and he stopped by the table at least twice and 'remembered' both times and apologized; when it finally got there it had no sugar in it at all! (um...that's kinda one of the main ingredients). Â There was a lag of almost 45 minutes between our appetizer and our entrees, along with yet more apologizing. Â We never even got steak knives for our meals. Â We asked for the cordial list between apps and entrees, and then again while we had our entrees, and the AGAIN when we had dessert, and we finally got it. Â You'd think for someone who's asking for the high end drink list, you'd kinda get right to that as a server. Â When I finally looked at my watch and realized we had been there for 3 hours, I was shocked, and we had to cancel our plans for the rest of the evening, because it was too late. Â
On the way out, I asked for the manager, to let him know about the poor service. Â Again, I work in hospitality, so I understand when you're in the weeds, on the busiest dining night of the year, service will be slow. Â But this was insane. Â (At this moment, I'd like to interject that I don't ever complain to a manager unless I feel it is completely necessary; and I NEVER complain with the motive of getting something free. Â I do it to let the management know of staff and service issues, so they get feedback and help improve their service! Â This is what *good* managers crave, and this is what *good* managers use to improve their staff!)
I politely let him know about our service, and that I do frequent the hotel/restaurant with clients, and that I was really disappointed. Â The manager's response was to give me a laundry list of excuses!!! Â There is nothing I hate worse than management that refuses to take responsibility for service short comings. Â So I called him on it, told him there was really no excuse for the poor service, and that I would no longer take my clientele there. Â He got the point, and then offered to buy me a round of drinks the next time I came in. Â That would have been great, and sounded like a good offering, and may have even changed my mind....then he wished us a good evening, and smiled, and walked off. Â Didn't give us his name, didn't give us a business card, -- NOTHING. Â That right there said a lot - and sealed the deal for me. Â Never going back. Â
Sum it up: Amazing food if you don't mind waiting forever for it, and tasty drinks IF they're mixed correctly. Â Service was laughable, and it's a direct reflection of the poor management that runs it.
**UPDATE** Â Checked my bank account the next day -- THEY DOUBLE CHARGED MY CARD. Â Called to have this fixed and was told that they couldn't do it until Monday. Â Called back myself on Monday after being told that I , "would certainly get a call", and was told that the server put through a "authorization" charge for more than DOUBLE what I had asked him to charge my card for, and then proceeded to charge it again. Â NOT NORMAL. Â Waiting now to hear back from the accountant to make sure the authorization is cleared TODAY, not "sometime in the next few days" Â This place just gets worse and worse as it goes on. Â So sad that the food was so good, but I will NEVER go back to this place ever again. Â BEWARE!
So the wife and I met friends here last night for dinner. Â Overall the experience was a big miss; so much so that I have to drop them from four stars to two.
Where to begin?  It took over an hour for our order to arrive and required several inquiries.  What?  Can't bring out a salad while the kitchen prepares the rest of the meal?  2nd round of drinks took  forever.  Waiter forgot to bring dirty ice with cocktail despite request.  No knife.  Several requests for mustard.  No napkin to replace the one taken away.  Bacon cheeseburger was not what I ordered. Music in bar was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves speak way back in the dining room; plus they went from Harvest Moon to heavy metal ... really?
The waiter comped us a round of drinks for our inconvenience.
We really like the ambiance. Â It is the only bar of its kind in Metrowest, South Beach in Newton, so we will go back but it'll be some time before we even consider dining there again.
Surprising different and a change of pace found off of 128. Â This is for the hotel and outdoor patio review. Â Drinks are fun and delicious and the bartenders know how to pour a cocktail. Â Service is slow so I usually grab the drinks at the Bar. Â Prices are in the mid 10-12 range and they have a limited beer menu. Â The crowd is much older and there is really nice seating inside and outside. Â They have live music on certain days.
Review Source:This place is interesting for people watching. Â This is certainly a place I will only go to for drinks and a change of atmosphere from the usual local haunts. Â Certainly not for the food.
We decided to give the menu a shot this past visit and ordered a bunch of appetizers to split. Â We had the buffalo chicken rangoons, oysters and tartare for our meal. Â Everything came out at the same time, which was great. Â The buffalo chicken rangoons were exactly what you would expect with a deconstructed sauce plating. Â Not the most appetizing to look at but they were good. Â The oysters were awful. Â Described as "East Coast" they clearly had been shucked at the beginning of service that night and had no juice in them at all. Â At 3.50 a pop it was pretty horrible. Â One of mine was also bad and had probably heated in the kitchen or something. Â The tartare was served up with a fried egg but seriously needed more acid. Â It was pretty unbalanced and bland tasting. Â I also got a few bites with connective tissue which I can't stand in a tartare.
We finished up the meal with a Red Velvet Cupcake. Â The cake was dense and tasty. Â The frosting was a bit heavy and on the waxy side for my liking. Â They served it with a random marscapone whipped topping which I enjoyed. Â The ice cream was alright. Â Everything seems to have this deconstructed plating which is a trend I would like to see them back off of a bit. Â Service was friendly but nothing outstanding.
Convenience was the key to this place. I liked hanging out by the pool and drinking beers. The mixed drinks were nothing spectacular. The first night had horrible service but the next day made up for it. Had the duck fries and they were pretty good. Nothing spectacular I guess. Had a sandwich the next day, and again, nothing spectacular.
What I did like was the pool, cabana, and bar atmosphere they created outside. That made it worth the high prices for the drinks and food.
First time at Bokx 109. Â Had an amazing experience. Â Food was great and the service was second to none. Â The atmosphere is so cool it was hard to believe you are actually in Newton and not Boston. Â If you are looking for a great night out and an exceptional meal you have to visit Bokx 109.
Recommendation: Any Steak and the Trio of Mashed Potatoes
Perfect storm of ambience, service, food, grill, wine, pool service, patio, firepit, cigars.... Â What a fantastic place for grown ups to have a great meal, drink and just chill. I was here on 2 occasions, both week days and it was packed.
Located inside the Indigo Hotel is this trendy, energetic restaurant. Â I ate everything on the appetizers menu and their Colossal Grilled shrimp is a must-try.
Their menu is mostly steak and grill but its really good.
What I love most about this place is the outdoor space. A huge patio, plenty of lounges, the pool, the huge firepits and .. what better way to end an evening with a cigar outside..
It was a nice night so we decided to sit outside. Â The service was slow to come to our table and slower the rest of the night. Â By the time the sun went down it was pretty cold and they don't have any outdoor heaters. Â Anyways, the meal came and there were no lights so it was actually difficult to see the food. Â We went here once before and I remembered it being pricey but their prices are just crazy. Â The steak was good but for $44 you would hope for a side or two. Â The meal was $100/person with 2 drinks and one appetizer. Â We went in for desert and it was another $25/person. Â
I am writing this review to remind myself in 6 months not to go back here. Â For this type of money you can get a much better experience at a Capital Grille or Grille 23.
We came here for Easter Brunch. The restaurant/hotel is very close to our house and we always pass it getting on the highway so it was nice to finally stop in. The parking garage is a little odd with posts everywhere and it's a bit of a walk to find the actual restaurant. Once you get in though you can tell it's a really nice space with a warm open kitchen and lots of seating.
There was a buffet for Easter Brunch so I won't be able to speak to the menu or dinner items, but the food was great despite some of it sitting out for a little longer than it probably should. I imagine it's tough to time when guests come between 10am and 3pm.
They were great about accommodating my wife's gluten allergy and she was able to eat most things. We'd like to come back again at some point, but unfortunately the dinner prices are a little out of our normal range.
BOXK is a good attempt at a suburban version of a city steakhouse. They succeed on the side dishes, which is key. The steaks are always flavorful and well-cooked.
The reason they only get 3-stars from me - is price. They price themselves like a downtown place, and they just aren't. If the bill was 10-15% lower, I'd bump them to 4-stars.
Ordered room service during my last business trip. Â
Ordered tuna carpaccio, crab cakes and side of fries. All wonderfully delicious.
Could have eaten multiple orders of the tuna it was just so good.
What wasn't good - Â I order soda. Could you send a glass? Â Possibly some ice I that glass since it was warm soda?
Great New York Strip Steak, cooked perfectly and certainly seasoned to perfection.
We went for Valentine's Day. Â The place wasn't too crowded, but close to full. Â It had a bit of a hotel bar feel, probably because it is in a hotel. Â :) Â
The sides were lackluster, we had Cauliflower Au Gratin and Asparagus Bernaise. Â There was nothing spectacular about either. Â For starters, we got two different side salads, which were average. Â Â None of it was terrible, but it didn't match the quality and taste of the Steak.
The place seems a bit confused on what it is trying to be. Â The decor is part 70s and part modern, with a partially open Kitchen configuration.
For the Steak, it is worth the visit, though I wasn't impressed with the sides or salads.
As I mentioned in my Indigo Hotel review, I was not expecting to find a good restaurant / bar in a hotel on the side of the highway.
I did not eat here, just came here for drinks with a colleague. Â The bar area was very large and spacious with not only a lot of bar seating, but also lots of couches in a lounge area next to the bar.
The decor is sleek and dimly lit with lots of dark wood and candles, etc. Â The service at the bar was excellent and the bartenders were engaging and friendly. Â The drink prices were very reasonable as well. Â I was there on a random Wednesday night and the bar was very busy, full of a fairly upscale clientele, some local residents and the rest were hotel guests.
Next time I come to Boston I am staying at the Indigo Hotel and getting drinks at BOKX 109.
Restaurant week - ordered off the regular menu.
Food was very good, timing and spacing of the courses was excellent, our waiter was friendly. Â The only thing preventing this from being a 5 star review was the hostess who asked us to wait in the bar (we showed up a bit early for our reservation) but there was absolutely no room in the bar. Â
I will definitely go back. Â This review, however, will die a lonely death as the only person who will read it is me. Â Yelp has jumped the shark!
Bar review only.
After perusing the drink menu, I settled on my choice, only to be told that they were out of the Rittenhouse Rye. Â OK, I understand that it has been in short supply, but there's been at least a case on the shelf of the mega liquor store on Soldiers Field Rd for the last month or so, but... whatever.
Also out of Jamison's Irish... Â hmmm...
Oh, and 86 the beef sliders. Â C'mon, its Friday night and you're out of hamburger?
One (expensive for the brand) draft later, and I walk out, probably for the last time. Â Shrugs.
This place is mad expensive and the portions are mini. The atmosphere is pretty cool with the pool, cabanas and outside fire pit all are super sleek. I would recommend sitting outside this fall by the fire pit and sipping on a few cocktails. If you have some disposable income you want to just burn through.
We ordered a few apps and had some drinks over Labor Day weekend. The pizza was a tiny display almost what you would find in the frozen food isle. The onion rings were huge and pretty good but by far the best thing on the menu that we tried was the flour less cake. The "heaven" ice cream was amazing but the scoop they gave you was about the size of a teaspoon. No joke.
$13 for a miniature Mojito - pathetic
$6 for a Coors Lite - even more pathetic
Seeing a bunch of Cougars at the bar - priceless
Quite possibly the most disgusting food I've ever eaten. Â
"Shells" appetizer - RAW lobster. Â Overcooked mussels, mealy shrimp and small PEIs.
Georges Bank scallops - Overcooked
Tenderloin with Foie Gras - Foie Gras RAW (retching noise here), truffled tater tots (hockey pucks), served on mashed (not on the menu, I have a dairy allergy and had to SCRAPE the mash off).
Wild Mushrooms with Truffle oil - Overcooked, not seasoned and gross.
ENTIRE MEAL WAS COMPED BY MANAGER. Â DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.
Went there for restaurant week. Â The meal itself was very good. Â The portions were horribly skimpy!! Â I was just at the Oak Room in Boston for restaurant week and the portions were more than adequate for an upscale restaurant.
Service was unexpected.  We went out expecting to enjoy a nice relaxing evening out.  Our first course was served before we even got our drinks.  We ordered one of their special drinks - Basil Gimlet only  to be told that the bar ran out of basil - this was 7:30pm!  But ok...
Our reservation was for 7:30pm....we arrived just a few minutes early and was seated promptly.....we ordered off the restaurant week menu and by 8pm our waiter had already closed out our bill! Â We were never even offered another drink. Â By 8:15pm we had our check and we were done with dinner and dessert.
We originally had planned to stay for after dinner drinks, however, given that we were feeling rushed the entire meal we decided to go someplace else for drinks - that someplace else was Legal Seafood. Â As we were leaving we saw our waiter leaving for the evening and saying goodnight to the bartender -- if he was in such a hurry to go home he should never have taken us as a last table. Â Â
The experience was HORRIBLE!! Â I will NEVER return due to the service...if portions are normal sized during non restaurant week, and they don't like Restaurant Week - I suggest Bokx 109 not participate. Â
We could have gone to an equally priced restaurant or a far less priced place and had a more enjoyable evening....I might have enjoyed a fast food restaurant more than this!! Â
Bokx 109 -- I hope you're listening! Â Please do something about your service!!
This place is a treat in every way, shape and form. If I was comparing it to a well-known place, I'd say it's comparable to Ruth's Chris Steak House both in service and steak.
Where it differs is the whole theme. So we had a most amazing waitress (Michelle) that was incredibly enthusiastic. She explained that all of the steaks have numbers next to them because they're numbered by the box they come in. Apparently every part of the cow comes with a number.
So for example, they're called BOKX109 and 109 is the number associated with Prime Rib, which is their signature dish.
Speaking of their signature dish, it's the Decon 3, and that's what I got. With this, you get prime rib, served three different ways. I wish I could remember it all, but one way is marinated like crazy, and literally falls apart when you stick a fork in it. The next is your usual prime rib, served up a little more like regular steak (seared all the way around), and the next is stuffed, with I don't remember what, but it tasted like sausage.
For appetizers, we got the calamari, which was pretty good, and came with horseradish sauce. My boyfriend appreciated that they threw some tentacles in there. I didn't. :)
For sides, we got the broccolini, which was broccoli covered in chili and garlic. Very good, but very spicy! Also we got the mashed potatoes, which were three pots of mashed potatoes served three different ways: garlic, cheese (I think), and horseradish (didn't like this one).
My boyfriend got a 24oz Cowboy Ribeye which he really liked. The thing was HUGE.
For dessert, we got the Red Velvet cupcakes, topped with mascarpone frosting and chocolate covered rice krispies. OMG so good, and I don't even usually like red velvet things. Since our waitress knew it was my birthday, she brought it out with a little happy birthday thing and candles :)
To top it off, you get a gigantic bowl of cotton candy! Our waitress even brought me some "to go", haha.
Oh we also got an amazing bottle of wine, at the recommendation of our waitress. It was nice to have someone who actually knew what she was talking about. She gave us all kind of information about lots of the wines.
Now for decor. I'll tell you what, the website doesn't do it any justice. My favorites were the brown leather seats, very classy and so comfortable. Also the lights that are made of candles, hanging from the ceilings. All over a very, very nice place.
Perfect for a fancy date, or like most of the people there, for a business dinner (there were lots of suits around us). It's pricey, but not obscene. Go for a special occasion. :)
I remember reading about this place when it first opened and dragged my significant other out there. Â This must have been several years ago because they didn't quite have their act together.
We were seated rather promptly and our server was very good. Â I ordered us a nice bottle of wine but when I took a sip, I noticed there was a huge crack in my glass. Â I asked for a new glass and they instead brought us a new bottle! Â I was quite pleased with their desire to make sure everything was pleasant.
SO got the ribeye and I ordered the deconstructed prime rib - we also shared the fries with three different seasonings. Â Overall, I was unimpressed. Â I think the ideas here are inventive but the flavours just didn't measure up. Â The meat seemed to be missing something and the way they cut it up didn't make me feel like I ate a whole - just parts. Â The fries needed more seasoning to distinguish themselves from the others. Â No need to say that it was pricey and I dropped almost $300 for two people.
Perhaps I will come back at some point once I have made the rounds to other steakhouses to see if it has improved.
Thank you fellow Yelpers for helping me discover this amazing restaurant!
Okay, the menu comes on a brown paper bag but that doesn't change the fact that the service, the food, the drinks and the deserts are all out of this world great! The pool area (opened in the Summer months) is a scene taken out of a South Beach. We were told that Sunday afternoon is the time to be at the pool.
I won't be going back to Bokx 109. Â Why? For the money I spent I've gotten much better service and food for half the price. Â I think this really deserves 2.5 stars. Â Now onto the details:
My fiancé and I went out to dinner this past week, all excited to try the food after reading all the great reviews.  We sat down midweek around 7 and were seated instantly.  The hostess helped us find out menus (they wrap them around the napkins).  It was here that things started to go, less than expected.  The napkins were ratty kitchen towels, which left white fuzz allover our clothes.
The service was slow and blasé.  Our busboy's took great care of us, filling out funky shaped water glasses, and bringing us rolls. I found myself constantly clearing our table, and making space for the next course.  When our waiter found time to come over to our table he wasn't any help.  When he asked if we were interested in drinks I asked him if they had any beer on tap.  I'm pretty sure his heart skipped a beat when inquiring about beer, but when he did tell me what they had (it wasn't on the drink menu) he quickly listed off the beers in such a way that all I could understand was "summer seasonal," so I went with that, and my fiancé got a glass of wine.  Both were delicious.
After reading all the raving about the "duck fat fries" we immediatly decided to split them as an app. Â What a let down. Â They were soggy, Â and the wost part was that some of them were cold (think steak cut fries, reheated the next morning, but you didn't put them in the microwave long enough).
Her tenderloin was delicious, tender and cooked perfectly. Â Not to mention it was DELICIOUS, DELICIOUS. Â My new york strip was so so. Â A medium cooked steak, while it was pink in the center, was burnt on the outside enough that I tasted burn in every bite. Â The mac and cheese and lobser risotto were served in large portions (I would have split one had I known they were so big), and tasted great as well.
We finished our meals, and after a long while, when it was very obvious that we were finished, the waiter finally... finally... finally cleared our plates. Â We asked them to be wrapped up, and the busboy did just that. Â He scraped everything into 1 container (and yes, don't worry he wrapped up the fat and burnt pieces in the take home bag as well!).
We ordered one of those chocolate moose and cookie shooter desserts. Â He brought it over with a bowl of complemntary cotton candy (sweet!). Â However the dessert was AWFUL. Â It was clearly made hours ago, and set in the freezer/fridge. Â The layers of chocolate, nutella, and pudding were inediable because the top layer was rock solid. Â Seriously, we couldn't eat any of it. Â So we figured why not just feast on the cotton candy. Â But we could only eat so much, so we asked to get it wrapped up as well. Â The waiter took our cotton candy, gave it to a busboy and that was the last time we saw it or him. Â We waited 5 mins, 10 mins, 15 mins. Â And after that we decided it was a lost cause. Â We got up and left.
For close to $65 a plate I truly expected more. Â You won't find me going back here again.
No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater than... Â Duck fat fries?
OH. Â GOD. Â YES!!!
Seriously, it's worth the trip out to Newton just for these fries.
The rest of the food (from the bar menu) was solid, if not a little pricey. Â The burger was quite satisfying and came with all the fixing, including a generous portion of crispy onions and a chunk of pork that was more like a pork belly than bacon (that's a good thing in my book).
The tuna sashimi was very fresh, and the crab cakes were yummy, if not a little on the small side.
The desert menu attempts to cash in on the (fading, thank G*d) cupcake craze, but without much luck. Â Next time I'll skip the Red Velvet Cupcakes and go straight for the Toasted and Frozen Pistachio, which looked quite good.
The drink menu was, if anything, excessive. Â I think they have 12 feet of bar space dedicated strictly to vodka. Â And while I appreciate a wide selection of liquor, I didn't see anything new or exciting and can't help but feel like the bottle were less for drinking and more for looking at.
I give BOKX a lot of credit for their service. Â I was anticipating a bit of discrimination because my party of four were the youngest patrons in the place by at least a decade and weren't exactly dressed for the atmosphere (jeans, hooded sweatshirts and fraternity letters). Â Nonetheless, our server was friendly, attentive, engaging and fairly knowledgeable and treated us exactly as I expected to be treated if I was 10 years older and dressed to the nines.
As for atmosphere, well, BOKX 109 is a little over the top; swanky, bordering on skanky. Â It's like a faux Miami Beach for the over 40 suburbanite. Â The phrases "MILF," "Cougar," and "Desperate Housewives" all come to mind when I glance around at the clientele. Â The number of skanked out middle age women hanging around the bar was almost obscene. Â Most definitely the hook up and affair capital of Newton - I think there's a wedding ring check next to the coat check. Â Excessive intoxication was also quite evident, as demonstrated by the group strewn across the couches in front of the restaurant, singing classic rock songs at the top of their lungs. Â I can only imagine what this place is like during the summer when the pool is open.
All in all, I think BOKX is going to impress some people, disgust others, and the rest of us will find redemption in the Duck fat fries.
My, my, my... how does one describe Bokx109 except to say that somehow South Beach found its way to Newton.
Poolside cabanas, firepits, lots of comfy outdoor seating, and a vibe so elegantly sexy I had to have my group's one-year-anniversary there.
Great menu, great bar, great Malbec (lucky me), and Davide, a manager that will make sure you are happy and looked after. Â
This place makes me think Yin & Yang: Â
The restaurant itself is all male: Â handsome and oaky with an open kitchen. Â It has some very nicely appointed private dining rooms, including one that's got the feel and technology of a state-of-the-art boardroom. Â
The huge poolside area that's the jawdropper, though. Â During the warmer weather months it's like a gorgeous lady that wants to wrap you up in evening breezes and sensuality.
Siiiigh.
My office is small enough (11) that we can all go out to dinner together. I chose BOKX 109 for its grassfed meat and everyone despite much grumbling accommodated my request as it was close enough to our office.
Although we were originally seated at a large table in the main dining area, we asked to be moved to the private room with closed doors and were quickly reset there with the playoff game on a large flat screen and our choice of music volume. Our server was extremely attentive and all of his suggestions were wonderful. My favorite apps were the crabcakes and the shrimp. The carpaccio was good as were the duck-fat fries. Calamari was only ok, but 4 out of 5 was good enough.
Both the steak and sides were divine. I most enjoyed the mushrooms. Wine selections and cocktails were both good. All and all a wonderful experience in what would otherwise seem a misplaced spot next to the highway. I will definitey go back.
Alright alright, perhaps I judged Bokx a little too harshly before I tried their food or actually had anyone wait on me. Â I've finally tried a wide assortment of their appetizers and daaaaaaaaaaamn! Good stuff! Â We had a work event here so I got to try a little of everything. Â Mini-cheeseburgers, steak on potato, deep fried goat cheese (crap now I'm hungry again).
The wine list is amazing and the service is good too (despite a bunch drunk of women hitting on the poor innocent servers).
