Ate dinner here with my husband and mother-in-law in December '12 and really enjoyed it.  It's BYOB, which we always like, and the food was quite good.  The service was attentive but not overbearing.  The ambiance was a bit loud (bright purples and gold) but the half-circle booths around the tables were fun and practical.  We will be back!

We were staying in NJ for the holiday, & while I was recouping, & came across this nice Indian place in the quaint & upscale (& a bit pricey) section of Summit, NJ.
We love Indian places & they did not disappoint us at all.  The only thing is that, like so many Indian places of late, they are a bit more pricey than even really good Indian food was ever meant to be.  That said, we didn't get a chance to try their lunch buffet which is always the best value at any such place.
In any case, the services was very friendly & really attentive.  They tossed in free appetizers & some really nice takes on the more traditional offerings.  Most important  of all, our standard favorites, such as Chicken Tikki Marsala, lamb Korma, Tandoori specials, etc., were all excellent & offered in very nice sized portions.  From the breads to the Lassies were all high quality & very, very tasty.
The had a well-rounder selections of offerings for manner of food preference & all dishes were prepared exactly how we ordered them, in so far as level of heat & spice saturation.  The surroundings were really lovely, with ethnic & cultural touches abounding, yet spacious & not cramped (like some Indian places can be.)
We would, when we return to Summit, most certainly return & this time can't wait to also check out the lunch buffet (keep in mind that they are closed on Mondays.)
They also offer free parking in the rear lot, in a section of town where parking can be an issue.

The Bombay Bistro has pumped some creativity and life into what could easily be another generic Indian place. They have perked my interest with subtle twists on standard fare. First, The tandoori chicken wing appetizer was fantastic. Thick juicy wings. Wings so big I can't imagine how big the chickens are!  Flavorfully marinated in chillies and yoghurt. Presently artfully on a plate with dipping areas. And oh my, the Gorai Beet Salad! Beets, both red and gold  combined  with tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion tossed with a subtle and balanced balsamic vinegar. This salad was fresh, crisp and delicious and unexpected to me at an Indian establishment. The palak lamb was fragrant flavorful as well as plentiful!  Breads were delicious as was the chutney, tamarind sauce and raita. Service was good!  The staff was accommodating and patient to my infant toddler and family. The ambiance in the dining room is large bordering on echoey, but nice and classy. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes. Management really cares about their operation and it shows.

First visit after movie down the street. Easy and the food was good although not old style traditional. The service was bumpy and the kitchen did not appear to be working together. The portions are large and even after sharing only 1 appetizer aloo tuk, we could not finish 2 entrees

It is a nice place . The food may not be called authentic Indian - but the Chef have done a wonderful job . It is very clean and stuff are helpful. Some of the non vegetarian main course was wonderful.

I would not call this authentic Indian food. The chef had tried to be creative with the Indian recipes but instead of enhancing the flavors, it has ended up making it a run-of-the-mill restaurant.

I tried Aloo Papri Chat. This is a fairly basic recipe but it had very little Papri in it, a little Aloo and lot of chick peas. The Veg Lonvas was something I had not had before - spices were good but I had not expected the coconut curry (since it was not listed on the description in the menu). It ended up being a sweet-spicy dish. Typically rice comes after 'roti' in Indian meals but they started with the rice and then I had to ask them to bring the rotis. Aloo Chana Masala was bland with an overpowering taste of canned tomato paste.

The food quantity is ample so you may want to go in groups and share food. This is a BYOB place. The reason I am giving this a 2 star and not a 1 star is because the restaurant manager offered to go to the liquor store next door and get me beer.  I was happy that they cared about my food allergies and were willing to adapt the recipes or suggest alternatives.

Ambiance is okay though the chair could be upgraded and a little background music would help.

Overall - good service. Everything else average to bad. I'll not got there again - NJ has much better places for Indian food.

Wah! Amazing place, awesome decor, amazing service, stupendous value! I can't believe a place like this exists nestled inside one of the most pompous towns in New Jersey!

First visit last night.  I'd summarize by saying "classic Indian with a contemporary spin.  Sensational."

Well done new renovation is inviting, not pretentious.  Easy to talk to guest because noise level is not bad.  Service was immediate and courteous.

I had North Indian Dabba, a chef's sampler, which included somosa, tandoori shrimp, lamb rogan josh, dal tadka, roti, and rice.  In lesser Indian restaurants, tastes are often overpowered by too much heat.  Here the spices were perfectly balanced, highlighted by the amazing shrimp.

Chicken wings with Indian spices were amazing, a very distant relative to the greasy bar food staple.

Bombay Bistro salad was refreshing, complex in tastes, seasoned with a terrific cilantro dijon vinaigrette.  Unique.

Paneer tikka masala, with an aromatic tomato sauce, was exquisite.

I am usually within a dollar or two when estimating a restaurant tab.  My estimate here was high by $14.  So the value was way beyond expected, the capper on a wonderful experience.

This is my new favorite Indian.  I'll come back with many friends.

this is not your typical indian restaurant - they serve beef and pork.

it's also the best indian (or indian themed) food i've had in the united states, and better than some meals i've had in mumbai and bangalore.

flavors are fantastic - the mussels were in a tomato based sauce, but with something a bit sweet (taramind?  raisins?) and spicy (cinnamon? cardmom?) as well.  we mopped up the "gravy" with the supplied bread (a cute touch -- a little bit of little italy with your indian mussels).  samosa was packed with veggies, not greasy at all, and again just the right amount of sauce and palate-challenging flavors.   for main courses we had the fried okra (in sauce and topped with crispy fried okra, another nice touch), goan shrimp, lamb rogan josh and palak paneer.  the spinach in the paneer was bright green, with big triangles of cheese -- not the usual weak green cream sauce with a few sad cubes of cheese swimming for their lives.

my (literal) acid test is to order achar (pickles) -- these tasted and looked exactly like those my buddy div used to bring me from mumbai -- carrots limes and mangoes in a heavy mustard seed and chili sace, not too sour and not too oily.  a little achar, some naan and some goan sauce and i was a happy camper.

bombay bistro took over from dabbawalla -- and they cleared a six on the new place (it's a cricket reference, look it up).
