Awesome food and great caps! Came here with some friends during a trip to NY/NJ. We had brunch and it was good food! I think of it as a cafe eating spot. The waitress and owner was very friendly. I had my 8 mo old with me and the owner brought out a high chair to flip to use for the car seat and even gave my son some toys. Looks like a great neighborhood spot to eat.
Review Source:I have been here three times and enjoy their breakfasts. Â The lunches are average in my opinion. Â They do try to please and staff is friendly, but prices are high for the sandwich specials and certainly not overstuffed. Â Quality of food is good, but when you put a side salad with a sandwich, for pete's sake, give the customer something more than mixed greens. Â How ebout a tomato or carrots, or some onions? Â Total greens from a bag! Â Awful! Â Put more cheese on sandwiches that come with it. Â I have gone to M & H on Stuyvesant and the sandwiches are so much better and enough to get two meals for less money. Â I can not say this place is horrible, but it is not high on my list....just sometimes quick and convenient,
Review Source:Despite what you have heard, Tristan and Steve have done a pretty good job with Cafe 401. Â As a previous, long-time patron and a big fan of Lea's I feel Cafe 401 is as good if not better. Â Their Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese sandwiches are the best I have had in town... they don't skimp on the meat and cheese like other places do. Â And who can beat the breakfast special for $1.99. Â
Give it a try and support a local business. Â They are great.
My one criticism... the decor. Â It's a little too overdone for the kind of restaurant it is. Â My suggestion, brighten the place up a little with some brighter colors and brighter lighting.
The Goog
Like many people who live in Union, you'll know this place as the old "Lea's Cafe." However, I decided today to give Cafe 401 a try for dinner.
I walked in to a completely revamped decour -- it seemed they were trying a bit hard to get the "smooth, evening" feel, but I kind of liked it. Illuminated pictures on the walls, cool hanging ceiling lights -- I'm an easy date!
I ordered the Portugese steak served with fried eggs on top with a brown garlic sauce (and rice on the side). Needless to say, I was STUNNED. It was TERRIFIC. Steak was cooked just right, the egg was done properly, and the brown garlic sauce was delicious -- rice on the side also was drizzled in the brown wonder sauce.
The people there were very nice, giving me plenty of time to order (considering I came at 5:45 and they close at 6). I respect that he didn't try and rush me, and even made the effort to ask how the meal was while I was eating.
I have no complaints about 401 Cafe, and I will DEFINITELY be going by again.
Despite what I heard was a shady overtake of Lea's cafe, I was curious if this new establishment would be any good... Although I should probably return to explore their "greasy breakfast" potential, I was unimpressed by my lunch experience with a friend.
To fully test the waters of this cafe, I went for the jugular and ordered a tuna sandwich. The overly-mayonnaised tuna salad was placed on a bun with extra extra mayo on a small plate with a generic pickle wedge. No frills. My friend's burnt bacon BLT was served with greasy saltless fries. Meh.
I don't know. Our waitress was really odd and the decor seems like a really desperate attempt at modernization. I would have preferred just a chill, old-school diner vibe with more attention to food quality. And, for the love of god, take down Lea's awning if you stole her joint!
