My favorite part of visiting with my good friend is breakfast. And we've been around. But I have to say you cannot beat Cafe Luna for the simplicity and deliciousness of the food. We're usually here first thing on a Sunday morning, just before the tourists are awake.

Cafe Luna shows that you can still get a delicious, non-greasy, well assembled breakfast without a lot of fuss. This morning I had the special omelette, which was essentially a BLT but no L, substituted for S(pinach). The coffee is good, too. Heck, the gov eats here, too, which goes to show that it's a good value.

Parking is a little trick. You can park in the HoJo lot of the chain's down, but there's also a ton of street parking around the corner and in front.

Cafe Luna doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. It's a simple breakfast joint with the standard fare. There are no frills and the prices are very reasonable.

My group stayed at the Howard Johnson Inn for Lollapalooza (attached to this place). We ate here for breakfast 2 days straight, and it's a great place for a good cheap meal.

    Divey? Yes.
Connected to a questionable Motel? Yes.
    Great service? YES!
    Great food? YEEES!!!
Great prices? DOUBLE TRIPLE QUADRUPLE YES!

We stumbled across Howard Johnson (our name for it) when Yolk switched management and we weren't allow to cut the line of people anymore.

The first time we sat our butts in the the booth we knew we would love it.  They have daily specials that don't look so great on a plate - but taste amazing in your mouth.  I am pretty sure they cook everything in pure bacon fat and tons of butter, but what do you expect from a greasy spoon! I used to say that Tempo had the best toast, but I am sorry move over Howard Johnson has got it!

One great thing about this place is... you can ask them to cook your food exactly how you want it, and they REALLY do it.  You want your potatoes crispy - you got it.  Eggs runny?  They do it!  They have two servers who are both very sweet and just do their job with out getting all "Friendly's" on your a**!

Its never crazy busy, its quiet even if there are 5 or 6 tables full.  This is not an organic, eggs hatched by natural sunlight kind of place.  This is a regular ole diner that is super great!

I want to find the genius who thought of putting tiny bits of bacon in the delicious spaghetti and give him a pat on the ass! Nice atmosphere. Perfect, quiet place to get to know my date a little better. Very friendly server. Reasonably priced food and it was all delicious too.
I'm looking forward to a return trip in the summer, for a little sidewalk bistro action!

This place is a diner. This is what it looks like, and the prices, and setting make this clear. I walked in and got exactly what I wanted and expected.

What I found: A diner like a diner should be, the Cafe Luna is easy to miss because it is in the lobby of the Howard Johnson on LaSalle Street. Don't be scared away because it is located in this old hotel. The servers are a friendly bunch of folks who kept the coffee and iced tea coming, and were nice to us all around.

This place is the classic diner with a bunch of round seats at the bar where you can have coffee and have the server pour it right in your glass. Very cool. Our group had the biscuits and gravy and some egg dishes and we were all happy. Now this place is not fancy at all - this is not freaking Whole Foods cafe or The Four Seasons! What is is is the sort of diner you might walk into in any small town in America and have a good breakfast and a cup of coffee for under $10. On these counts, it delivered exactly what I expected.

If you are used to brunch life in Beverly Hills rather than a an old fashioned American diner you best get over to Yolk, Orange, or a 4 star hotel cafe (and these are all fine) where you can drop $40 on brunch or breakfast and have something very different, but if you want eggs, potatoes, toast and coffee, and want it done the way you might get it if you were a Nighthawk at the Diner, then you have found the right spot brother and sister!

Between a 6am spin class and a 9am volunteer shift at the anti cruelty society I needed to refuel. I stopped here and was disappointed the hash browns weren't so hashy. Think oily potatoes with onions and the 'whole wheat' toast...processed and stale tasting. The service was nice but the food didn't cut it. I won't be back avoid this place if you want a good breakfast.

One of the doorladies in our building works at Cafe Luna on the side and recommended it to us.  Her description of the omelette was that "they ain't pretty, but they good" which according to my friend who ordered the ham and cheese omelette was pretty much on target.  I ordered the 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and either bacon, sausage, or ham combination (with the ham).  The eggs were good, but the pancakes were a little soggy on the inside and the ham had a little too much fat.

The best thing about Cafe Luna is that it is a real, cheap diner.  Unlike some of the other diners in Chicago (Michael's, Clark's, Golden Nugget), Cafe Luna does not charge extra for location.  Our total bill for 2 hearty breakfasts and coffee was $14.

And yes, it is attached to the Ho-Jo.

This place is a great, no-frills diner, attached to the Ho Jo.  My fave breakfast consists of grits and sausage patties, scrambled eggs, and some toast.  Simple and delicious.  Also, el cheapo.  Andale!
