Went here thinking we were going to LALO's, surprise surprise....not so much. It looks and feels like a LALO's, but that's about it. After a crappy day, me and the gf needed margarita's....The LALO's kind!! Ordered a pitcher from here and within sips, I returned it and asked for the check!! the drink was like a cheap pre-mix. The salsa was a blended tomato soup with spices. During all this we initially ordered Ceviche, to our surprise it was tolerable. But sorry, NEVER again will I be duped by a look-alike restaurant. Should've checked yelp first, totally my fault!
Review Source:Last night, a couple of gf's of mine and I decided to catch up and we were all craving mexican, so still thinking this place was Lalo's we came here. Â Due to the fact that we were STARVING, we stayed. Â First, the place was too loud by the tv's granted we did want to watch the Bears game so it was ok, but after the game ended we wanted to hear ourselves talk, and THAT was impossible. Â The food was eh ok, bland if you ask me and cold..wth! The soda was flat. Overrall I wouldn't come back here by choice, too bad too the place has such potential.
Review Source:I ended up at Caliente's because I thought it was still LaLo's Mexican Restaurant, until I arrived with a friend and noticed the sign now read "Caliente's". Â When we entered there were only 3 other tables with dining customers (Strike #1). Â The booth we were shown to had torn cushions with holes that nearly ran through to the bottom of the bench (Strike #2). Â Although the waitress was pleasant the food was not. Â We started off with an appetizer platter. Â When it arrived the food was undercooked and under-seasoned. Â The chips were stale and the guacamole, flavorless. Â We also ordered medium sized margarita's which tasted as if they were made in glasses containing dishwashing detergent (Strike #3). Â
By the time our entrée's arrived we were so turned off by the previous items we had sampled that we just had the food packed up, paid our $80 + bill and left to never, ever return again!
It wasn't terrible, but we don't think we will be going back. Our food and service was ok but my husband kept complaining about the loud mariachis. Our margarita was bad, almost flavorless. Price is good but after reading all the other reviews I don't think I will take a second chance on this place. I am sorry for that bc I really think they have potential to be better
Review Source:Be careful if you are just here for drinks, our bartender was trying to cheat us out of money. We went to this place for my partner's sister's birthday. It was the last stop for the evening and we were all a little on the tipsy side. The first time I went to the bar, the bartender told me that I couldn't use a credit card. I was confused because I thought that another person in our party had used one, but I had cash so OK, though I thought the drinks were a little pricey. Then when we went back, another person in our party paid, and now they took credit cards. When another person in our party bought a round with cash, the price changed to double what we had paid previously. Apparently, if you paid cash, you were charged more than if you used your credit card. Not uncommon when you have a bartender pocketing the difference.
STAY AWAY!!!!
Went there with a large group of people, it was nice at first.
They served everyone soup first some of us got chicken soup and other "tastes like chicken soup" (meaning it had no chicken in it). Some of us were missing silverware and eventually had to get up and get it ourselves since the waitress took way too long.
A few of us ordered a dish that included shrimp wrapped in bacon and all of our bacon was not cooked at all.
The Chorizo in the dish wasn't cooked either. These are pork foods - you'd think they'd be wary about. Not the case.
We informed the waitress and her reaction was to roll her eyes and state "I didn't cook it."
I would not recommend this place at all.
So sorry to have to throw out a bad review but this place was just plain BAD. Â We went here for a rehearsal dinner so the company was a blast at least!
The atmosphere: Â Oddly deserted and TOO LOUD mariachis made it impossible to have conversation when they played.
The service: Â They were trying their best but it was mediocre at best. Â Entrees came out at scattered times. Â Took much too long (maybe 20 minutes?) to take our order and we were so hungry. Â
The price: Â Not expensive but they should probably be giving this food away.
The food: Â Oh my goodness was it bad. Â The guacamole was shockingly flavorless. Â The chips tasted more like multi-grain Tostitos than traditional homemade mexican chips. Â The fajitas had about five tough strips of steak. Â The worst? Â My mother's chicken came out 10 minutes late and when she cut into it, IT WAS STILL UNCOOKED!
The drinks: Â Made everyone feel like crap later.
With the abundance of great food in Chicago, there is just no reason to come here. Â Sorry...
Caliente is missing the caliente from it's atmosphere because it's kinda of a cold atmosphere despite all the cute little Mexican chachki's laying around. The place is really big which is a little funny because there was barely anyone in there. I'm pretty sure this place is still Lalo's with a name change.
The food was ok. The Salsa was pretty good. The tortilla chips were a little too heavy for my liking. They gave us a free cup of Chicken Noodle Soup, but it wasn't every good because the macaroni was a clumpy mess at the bottom.
I had the Lalo's platter, which I recommend because it was actually really tasty and plentiful. My boyfriend picked a combination but looked a little disappointed with the food. The Mexican Rice was really tasty and their beans were pretty tasty as well.
We went there last night for dinner. We were kinda shocked that it had front door available parking! Apparently it has free parking that later becomes valet parking. Â We walked in and the place was dead!! I am not kidding. There was a family that had just left and another couple eating at the bar ( which they have a full bar). Â A family walked in about 5 minutes after us. For pretty much the majority of the meal that was all who was in the restaurant, and it was around 6 PM.
I am a little suspicious of restaurants that should be crowded around dinner time. Thanks to Groupon we decided to come here. So I will break this into parts.
Atmosphere: Â Very authentic. My mom would have been proud. Except for the one Spanish techno song, all of it was right on. The decor and etc. For the most part it seemed fairly clean.
Food: I thought was decent. It was hard to find a fajita. My kids had a workable kids menu. My husband got one of the waitress recommendations and it was excellent. I tried something similar to a fajita, it was all pretty good.  The chips that they served us were stale. The salsa was  mild in some parts of the bowl and spicy in others. The guacamole had to much cilantro in the middle. However, they did serve us some unexpected chicken noodle soup. That was divine.  But not for the price.
However the portions are huge!! Maybe that is how they justify the price.
Service: Since there was only 3 parties I have no idea why it was so SLOW!! I mean my kids were asking had we got the check yet? Towards the end of our meal, it started to pick up a little with 2 big parties coming in. We had to ask for refills every time. The family that came in after us, left before us. Our table was getting so crowded with plates, that I started stacking them for our waitress so  we could have some room, especially after my daughter spilled her milk and told me she had no where to put it.
About the spilled milk. Right when it happened another waitress walked by, looked down and kept walking. I mean you only have 3 parties it wasn't like they were super busy. So my  7 month pregnant butt got down there and started cleaning it up with napkins, and soaking it up. As we are leaving ( 10 minutes later) someone comes to clean it up.
Cost: The total of our bill here was about $55.00, not including the tip. That was for two adult entrees, two kids meals and sodas.
So all in all, I think I would rather drop an extra $20 and go the more popular Mexican place up the street, or  save an extra $35 and go to Noodles.
