It is a great place to fell the "summer in the air" . I felt like i was back to Brazil! This time my hubby and I had a crab roll. He loved it.  I liked it.  I think it could use a little more salt. But i think i would go back even if the food was 'so so' cause i loved the place. Ps. After all i got a cute murano necklace at the craft store.

The bathrooms were covered in sand and water in the evening as if no one cleaned them all day. The assortment of beers was awful, only domestic aluminum bottles. It was a large, nice set up with a cool band playing.

Went here for a business function and was not impressed. Over priced beer and mediocre food. The patio and deck were nice but with people smoking EVERYWHERE it kind of infringed on any ability for me and my party to enjoy the view. Will not go back.

Terrible food. All fried and fatty food and really crappy salads. Cheaply made fried food, by the way. I ended up getting the grilled chicken salad that cost nearly over $11. It had the standard cheap iceberg lettuce mix and a few croutons with dried out grilled chicken breast. (though the chicken was inferior, it was the only part worth eating). Topping the salad was a packet of Newman's Own "shlock" bottled Honey Mustard dressing. It was a waste of money, appetite, and calories. Better to save your appetite and go someplace that earns your dollars in exchange for a good meal.

If you are looking for somewhere to hang out, enjoy the breeze, and have a drink, Captain's Cove is your spot. It is a good place to meet up with friends. It is a very relaxing environment and chilled place to spend an afternoon. They have a lot of tables with some private areas for a larger group.

But there is nothing exceptional about this location. The food are majority fried and sub par ... In addition, a bit overprice for the quality of food.

I've been to this place on 3 occasions.  I was there twice in 2009 and I went here again on Memorial Day weekend to meet up with a college friend.  It's a fine place to go and meet up with a friend you haven't seen in a while, but there is nothing spectacular about it.

They host a wide variety of live music acts during the summer months, both outside on the docks and inside the bar on the top floor.  The musical acts are often quite good and a bright spot in an otherwise depressing neighborhood of old public housing developments, a sewage treatment plant, various industrial plants, and an old dump.

Another reviewer was right; it does have the feeling of a high school reunion.  In fact there seems to be a lot of middle-aged singles who enjoy the place.  But the crowd is extremely mixed.  I saw people who ranged from their mid-20s until well into their 70s in the bar.  It is one of the few places I have ever been that appeals to such a wide range of ages and it is a sign the establishment is doing something right.  I didn't sense that there were a lot of sketchy men in there looking to pick fights or grope women as is often the case in bars in these kinds of neighborhoods.

It's not a pretentious place, which are unfortunately a little too common on the Gold Coast of Connecticut.  I get the feeling that all socioeconomic groups are equally welcomed and valued and no one cares about the size of your wallet.

Their variety of beers are good, but they don't serve anything unusual or rare.

Their mixed drinks are hit-or-miss.  They gave me a sangria which was so watered-down and weak it tasted more like cranberry juice with ice without any traces of booze.  It was disappointing because it looked so good sitting in their pitchers on a hot day.

I had an unfortunate encounter with a rude bartender on my last visit that I am going to complain about.  After spending about $30 on drinks and another $8 on food I asked him for a glass of ice water because it was so hot and alcohol can make you dehydrated.

His response: "Nope!  I don't have time for that."

What an inhospitable and dismissive way to treat a customer.

I should have left right there, but I stayed because I had travelled about 60 minutes to see a friend and I didn't want to leave him behind.

Asking for water in a bar and restaurant is not an unreasonable request from a paying customer and refusing to serve them is not going to get customers to come back (and leave tips).

Other bartenders I spoke to were much more accomodating.

I would say the quality of the experience depends on who is serving you and what you are ordering.  It's a safe 3-star experience.

Just not compelling as a seaport goes but if you're on the water or going out then it will do fine.  It's otherwise a bit of bread and circus to be honest with fried seafood, tourist trap garb for sale, and alcohol to spruce up the atmosphere.  It's a very different environment than what one would think as they're approaching so if you're up for a surprise then by all means make the choice to check it out as it's much better than the neighborhoods that are required to pass through enroute (sewage treatment plant for example...)

Come on - this is a local novelty. And to be fair it's held it's own for a very long time.
    Typical nautical style tourist spot.
    Restaurant & full bar.
    Seasonal live bands.
Lots of port side tables to have a drink or partake of fried seafood.
Walls are adorned w kitschy beach side wall "art" & local history.
Depending on the day/night you find yourself here can really make all the difference in the type of experience you will have.
    Example:
Sun afternoons have live bands outside spewing out rock cover tunes, replete w biker crowd, 80's inspired whit high top Reebok donning chicks.
Most other days: eclectic mix of families parousing shops & consuming fried seafood & enjoying the marina view.
Blue fish enthusiasts participating in both bad beer consumption or getting on/ off a fishing boat, local baseball teams grabbing a beer after a game.
All in all it's not so bad. Tourists love it. Kids enjoy it too.
The row of shops on the board walk are unique in the way that they are inspired by Victorian architecture but are miniature bcz they only allow for 2-3 adults to enter at a time. The retail is typical ocean side novelties.
Ice cream & Italian ice, beverages & candy is sold also.
The view isn't too bad either- docks/ slips for private & commercial boats, huge deck w built in picnic tables covered in order to enjoy the restaurants seafood menu options: fried scallops, shrimp, fish & chips, hot dogs & hamburgers, salads, daily drink/ seafood specials.
    Large public restrooms.
    Huge parking lot.

A local radio ad might say
"Yes, Thats Captains Cove- before Craigslist had an adult section, we were very very busy"

It would of been 5 stars if they didnt charge a $5 cover for the "olde Thyme Newe Englande" grog guzzling experiance...

Reasons why I like this place

    1. An actual marina with pleasure and fishing boats with the old Bridgeport Dump in the background.
    2. The old player piano complete with broken tambourines, dirty barbies and a unique tune in the key of h (i think)
    3. Its has that "high school reunion" mixed with "singles night" feel to it, which is basically the same thing
    4. Shops that no one can go into becuase most people cant fit inside
    5. and dont worry, if you dont have a car, or boat you can apparently get here by whirly-bird by landing on the custom helicopter pad in the parking lot...

Average fried seafood and boardwalk fare with a spectacular view of the cove on the Sound. Little shops are nice for kids' trinkets and sea-themed art.

The food at Captain's Cove is at best average, however it is such a fun place to visit and explore.  It is right on the water and you can walk on the docks and see fish and lots of boats.  The best deal and best time to visit is on Wednesday because they have an all day $3.99 Clam Fry special which is actually pretty fresh and tasty (I had not on Wednesday and it was almost $10).  The weekends are more crowded and there is live music (usually rock or country) usually Friday and Saturday and a lots of alcohol drinking.  They do boat tours/ boat trips and give the history of the Black Rock harbor which I have done and I enjoyed.  They have great one of a kind mom and pop shops selling hand made gifts.  There is plenty to do in this area and a must see for everyone nearby.  I have not tried all their food, so I may be wrong on calling the food average.  But they have hot dogs and hamburgers so it's great for kids and teens to eat.   The soups are about $6.

The bar is on the upper deck so it is separate from the walking family area.
The place has everything but miniature golf.   I am definitely a fan of the place.
