I LOVE their outdoor patio very big and usually pretty packed on nice days and evenings in the summer. I have been here numerous times and usually have a good time. It can be hit or miss tho. If it is a hot summer day/eveing the patio and bar have a nice crowd. Once the patio shuts down or the weather isnt as nice the place seems to be pretty dead.

Would highly recomended for day drinking or a hot evening on the patio. They have TVs every where out on the patio so also good for watching games.

Stopped here in early August for a drink with a friend. She and I both had glasses of wine.

She got the "Southwest Salad" which is romaine lettuce with tomatoes, mixed cheese, corn, black beans, onions, and topped with tortilla strips & buffalo ranch dressing. I didn't have a lot of it but I tasted it and it was very good.

This looks like an amazing beer garden as well. If we had time, I would have enjoyed coming back here again and having beers in the sunny Chicago afternoon. I would definitely track this spot down again, although I do wish they had WiFi.

After a fantastic pizza dinner at Lou Minatti Pizza, right next door to this Cedar Hotel, our group decided to swing by and get a beer. It looked like a fun active place. Turns out its all a big scam, I am not sure why anyone would ever come back to this place twice, unless they give local people a different price then out of towners.

We ordered a beer each, and our server recommended getting the bucket to save a couple of bucks, so we did that. Once we got the tab, 6 beers cost $50. In a place like Singapore or Tokyo, I expect this, but no where else in Chicago were prices so inflated.

So STAY AWAY, there are tons of great places in the area to go, that won't gouge you.

They have $14 for large cocktails which definitely have a kick to them, and a nice outside patio for summer.  But the service was absolutely TERRIBLE.  Took a while for the waitress to get our drink order in, and just about forever to get our check when we were finally done.  (She was sitting out in front playing with her phone, go figure.)

While it's not the most glamorous place on the block, a great place to sit outside on the patio to have a few drinks and admire how creepy the building is.

Was early for an event, 3 of us stopped in to have 1 drink. Was seated right away at a table in the front court yard by a friendly hostess. The female in the group went to the bathrooms, which are NASTY & when she arrived back at the table we still were waiting for a waitress. I looked over at the hostess station and several waitresses sitting around chatting. I gave the evil eye and then one finally came over and took our drink order. NOT IMPRESSED with the attitude of this waitress!!! I will say the one drink we did have was nice and strong, this place needs to retrain the staff or fire the lazy ones. Service is a huge part of impressing customers, this place failed. I might try again next year, for now it was a bad experience for the 3 of us.

I love that they have a huge outside patio which was  great for our summer night!  they do have delicious cocktails priced at $14 for 22 oz but you can def. get a buzz just off one.  I also tried the kobe beef burger which was very good; it came with a side of "sweet tater tots" which i came to find out are just sweet potatoe tater tots ( the waitress surprisingly was unaware of that).  overall i enjoyed my meal there!

I give the food 5 stars and the atmosphere a 3.5/4.

The Kobe Burger with Garlic Parmesan fries was AMAZING. highly recommended.
The Margarita with Milagro Tequila might be the best margarita that I've ever had.

The patio was nice in nice weather, but seriously the music was way too loud and the crowd was way to plastic and fratty.

So if you're deaf and blind but have exceptional taste buds this place might be a 10 star for you, but I wouldn't dismiss it if you're in the neighborhood.

Where to start. I think I will keep it short and sweet on this one. Service sucked!! From the Hostess to the server. I think they were more interested in texted on their cell. (Hint to Boss-Loose the phones while working). The waitress look good but was just plan rude.  If you are looking for draft beer don't even stop. Bottles only and for $5.00/domestic I could think of a lot better places to spend it then here. Just moving here from Houston a few months ago I have found dozens of great places but I think I finally found one that I really could have done without.

Personally I go here to see some of the finest work from Chicago's plastic surgeons. It's a great showroom in that regard. So if you're thinking of getting some enhancements ("ladies...") then go here for a good referral.

I suppose that haters do hate.. This place is great. I enjoy going here. It's a perfect summer outdoor place to have drinks. If I was going to open up a bar in Chicago it would be just like this place.

I've never eaten anything here, just drinks as you should. As other mentioned it's prime time for people watching. Sit back, invite some friends, order some drinks, and enjoy the Chicago summer...

The concept of this place is actually really good, but they need to do something with their food and drink to differentiate themselves.  If you were blind, you would think you were in any other random old bar in Lincoln Park.  I like patios, but I've come to the conclusion that not many places do them very good, this included.

They need some craft cocktails, craft beers, and an overhaul of the menu.  Barrelhouse Flat is proof that craft cocktails can be done on a large scale and stay consistent.  Okay, maybe not Barrelhouse Flat level, but at least some creative shit.

I find it somewhat puzzling that this place was supposedly voted one of the best beer gardens in Chicago yet I didn't really see anyone drinking beer or remember a long string of taps at any of the bars.  One of the bars didn't even have a tap.  All I saw was vodka bottles.  I've gotta believe that people would drink some stuff off a menu if they brought it.  Or is vodka-redbull and Bud Light all Rush St is interested in?

It is a rather manageable place for a group, I will give them that.  BUT after they pushed people inside, it was time to leave because there was nowhere near enough room to fit everyone that was sitting in the patio.

    Great potential, horrible details.

Cedar Hotel is perfect for a group of friends looking to drink outside. They are only open in the summer and occasionally some nice nights in the spring and fall, but they have a awesome outdoor patio with tons of tables and seating.

They have giant fish bowls of mixed drinks you can order which are like $100 but are totally worth it since you get probably 30 drinks out of them.

It's usually pretty crowded here, but I've never had to wait more then 10 minutes to get a table outside, and usually I get seated right away.

The food is okay, nothing special, just typical bar food. But it's a great place to hang out with a big group of friends and drink!

Best patio in the Gold Coast, and on my Top 10 for outdoor spots in Chicago. I have never tried the food, but the cocktails are sugary and delicious. The wine is over-priced at $11+ a glass,  beer is ~$6, cocktails are $10 for 16 oz and $14 for 24 oz, so you do the math. I was a huge fan of my Poolside Splash, which was Peachy and refreshing. My friend's favorite is the Motel Mango. On a hot day, Cedar Hotel can't go wrong with fruit-flavored vodka, mixed with fruit-flavored nectar, all blended in a tall plastic cup. FYI patio starts shutting down around 11:30PM.

I can't give a better rating simply because of the wine prices and the lack of air conditioning indoors. Stick with the patio and the fruity drinks.

My sister and I were walking around the neighborhood and stumbled upon this large outdoor patio with people of all ages drinking, eating and laughing. We decided to grab a light lunch.

Sis: Quesadillas- was good- but can you really mess up a Quesadilla?!

Moi: Kobe beef sliders with Brie and some other stuff I didn't recognize. Despite not knowing what exactly was coming on these sliders I went for it anyways. They were the best sliders ever.in.life.  I will never stop searching my current state for the quality and delectableness these sliders delivered.  You see, I do not live in Chicago and was only here for a quick getaway. I have a feeling I will be deprived of their greatness until my return.

My sister and I washed down our meals with a light, crisp, refreshing white wine. We each had 3 glasses and at $13/piece we could have had 3 bottles of wine! Yikes. We were a little disappointed in our waitress on that one.

None-the-less the ambiance was wonderful- fresh, friendly people from all walks of life, great food and great company.

    Casual environment.

I mean, it's not my favorite place in Chicago, but I don't understand all the negative reviews.  They have a huge patio perfect for Happy Hour that extends way into the evening.  For as crowded as it gets, I was impressed by the attentive waitress and bus boys, as well as the speedy bartenders.  They've obviously got the crowd down.  The food is typical bar food, and it was easy to choose an appetizer as a meal - Mini Kobe Corn Dogs won me over.

The crowd is a little preppy, but honestly, it's not like "let me come tell you all about my yacht" preppy, because I really can't handle that.  The atmosphere is generally fun and it's in a great location - How can you not love State Street?  Part of the heart of Chicago.

Holy Chorizos!!!!! This place is great!  Being familiar with this area from my roaring drunken 20's and having some time to kill before jumping on the Redline for the Sox game I decided to land in here for a little pregame action!
Let me break it down for you...........

Awesome Patio view for people watching! Better than Big Star!
Eyecandy galore.....Like an Alcoholic trapped in a Binnys overnite!!
Swell priced drinks for the area.
The Bros and Blond Trixies are out in full force herefolks!!

AND...Effen Tim Tebow bartending!!!! Yeah Big Tim Tebow look like!! The most massive bartender I have seen!

Go on hit up this place this  for some summertime fun brosef style!!!! Collars up, visors on boys!........DONT forget the Mandals!!(sandals)

Shake & bake seal of approval!

Hipster in festation level: ZERO!!!!! Tim Tebow and his band of Brosefs are just too much for even the bravest artist/musician who dares to wander in here.

So once upon a time like over a decade ago, Melvin B's and Cactus were a one-two punch that our posse hit up on the regs (oh man, that just hurts like hell to type that drivel, downright shameful, my apologies).

These days however with much of those ppls succumbing to confined suburban imprisonment, I rarely if ever find myself in this particular area...maybe Gibson's or Carmines on the random "let's get  a prime steak" occasion.  So when a buddy reco'd it for some summertime ppl watching, food and drinks, this was his chosen spot De jour, and against my better judgement, I reluctantly obliged.

The place was spilling over w. all manner of folk from nearly every spectrum of life with a heavy dose of jersey shore types...it should be noted, and not at all surprising, hipster infestation levels here are basically Zero.

The drinks are a bit overpriced with a Daisy Cutter ringing in at over 7$.  They make a decent bloody mary and the food actually is not all bad.

Service is totally spotty but when you're dealing with the equivalent of the spring break massive, you should probably know that going in and just deal.

The beauty of it all, after you've reached maximum Dbag capacity, you can walk North about a 1/2 block and get some Lou Malnatis to wash away all the dirtiness you were just exposed to.

Get in ?  Well, you gotta pick your moments, sometimes yes, usually no.  This time was a yes and will probably be years before I make a return visit.

The inadequacy is MIND BLOWING. Enjoy the lowest tip any of us has ever given waitress, who btw was wearing spandex shorts only appropriate for a volleyball court.

Honestly, I love Cedar Hotel -- in the afternoon.  This is the perfect summer lunch spot.  The turkey club is FANTASTIC, and so is the Suite Tea.  My co-worker had the fish tacos and loved those as well.  I'm pretty sure they were tilapia.  Both times I went I sat in the same area on the patio and had the same server, Melissa.  She was a gem.  Very sweet.  Anyways, the patio is just fantastic, the view around you is beautiful, and your meal ends up costing just as much as if you went to Corner Bakery.

The only reason I hesitate giving the 5th star is because when I tried to go for dinner on a Friday evening (around 6) it looked like a college Barbie and Ken bar (which is fine..) and the club music was out of control (less fine).  The wait was an hour and a half.  I didn't realize how quickly the scene changed!  However -- if that is what you are into, you'll love it! This will still remain my favorite summer lunch spot in the city.

When it's warm out and I want to check out the action of Viagra Triangle, this is a once in awhile destination.  Prime location for a beer garden.

If I have out of town friends visiting Chicago and they want a glimpse of something, I might bring them here.  Tourist destination.  Also, the people watching is pretty fun.  Lots of different kinds of specimen for the viewing.  Pretty young things vying for the attention of those using Viagra in the hopes of a sugar daddy and few random cougars on the prowl looking for a young buck to ensnare.

All of that I say in jest, some of it might be true and seems so from some random conversations I've had with different kinds of folks.

Why I like Cedar.  I like it most when it's warm.  I like the attention it drags in.  I love the amount of legs that pass through here.  I like the hefty pours made by their bartenders when they offer a sick special on hurricanes, margaritas or other tropical sounding drinks.

    Don't hate.

I want to be on board with this place, but just can't quite bring myself to give it that extra star and boost it up to OK-dom. Cedar Hotel's beer garden is absolutely its biggest draw and rightly so; there's nothing better than sitting outdoors on a summer day in Chicago sipping on some cocktails with friends. Depending when you arrive, the wait for a table hasn't been unbearable yet. (Last time my friends and I arrived around 8-8:30PM and were seated within 10 minutes. A later arrival time would likely have me singing a different tune, though.)

Cedar's drinks are fairly priced and decent-tasting. (The pre-mixed options are all super-sugary, though... then again, what else would you really expect?) Service is just so-so. Unless your server finds you attractive and is actively trying to hit on you -- such as our waitress was was with the two guys sitting at the table beside us -- you'll often find yourself looking around trying to flag down your server.

The crowd at Cedar Hotel is certainly varied. It consists of the typical random mix you'll find throughout the Viagra Triangle and along Division Street bars. I live a few blocks away and enjoy people watching, so I find it all quite entertaining, though truly it's a bit seedy when you really stop to think about it.

Will I go back to Cedar again? Sure; having a beer garden so close to where I live is simply too hard to resist permanently. But I'll only be visiting on a random whim; definitely will never become a regular.

    The Jersey Shore in Chicago....

If you've been to the Cedar Hotel, or hell even walked past it, you know what you're in for....LOUD music, some fist pumping, guys with big muscles, girls with really short skirts.....honest to god I can't figure for the life of me why this place is in the heart of the Gold Coast!

The drinks here are fantastic, I will give them that.  They have a long list of sweeter drinks and they go down rather swiftly (or maybe that was just me?).  They serve food yet I'm unsure if anyone actually eats here--it seems that the drinks take center stage.

No matter how old you are, you will feel old at The Cedar Hotel.  Unless of course you are 22, in which case you'll fit right in.  Also, if you're 22, don't ever get any older because it's not all it's cracked up to be!  But I digress.

The Cedar Hotel is great for those who want to sit outside for hours on end and drink, drink, drink.  It's always crowded so squeeze your way in between all the muscle guys and get yourself a spot in the sun.

Hello, summer Sunday fundays in Chicago! With such a great outdoor space, and a perfect location for people watching, the Cedar Hotel is a solid spot for all your day-drinking needs.

But this ain't your cheap day-drinking a la college. Expect to spend a pretty penny for a day out on the patio, and with pretty weak drinks for the price tag. While the cocktail waitresses will fulfill your need for boobage, fake talons, and inappropriate amounts of skin, getting a drink to appear in a timely fashion can be a Herculean task. Haven't tried the food yet, though I hear it's pretty solid.

For the VT, however, I was sorely disappointed by the fact that not one old creepster hit on me. Perhaps I'm a bit too old for their tastes. Or I need some after-market parts installed. What's a trip to the VT without one good fat old man story?! But let's be honest, day drinking doesn't bring out the geriatric crew. It probably interferes with either their golf game or their prostate exams.

Definitely a primo spot to go to in the goldcoast when it's nice outside. Slamming atmosphere, scenery, food, and scenery (yeah the scenery is that good). Every time I walk by this spot the slamming music and atmosphere brings me in for a drink or 7.

The service is pretty decent, but the attractiveness of the servers makes up for any delay in the food coming out. If you are looking for a slamming spot to go to and do some solid day drinking, Cedar Hotel is it. It's truly an outdoor party. Boom!

Always has been a dump, always will be a dump. At least the hotel part is gone now. I went in with no expectations.

And I was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of the drinks actually looked pretty appealing. I wouldn't come here for food, but it's a good view and my "Suite" tea lemonade (with vodka, obviously) was actually pretty good. The kitschy drink names work for the place, too.

That being said, the service was deplorable. Though there were probably 12 girls running around in their cute little Cedar Hotel tees, it took literally fifteen minutes to get our check because our waitress just never came back by the table or made eye contact.

But if you're willing to pay $10 for a drink and a view, hey, you might as well stop by.

At this point in my life, I try to keep my outings non-triangular. Having joined the ranks of the undesirable over-28, under-48 demographic, I'm not even sure I feel welcome at several of these establishments. I don't drive a Bentley, nor do I believe it magically turns into spring break again as soon as Ne-Yo and Pitbull come on, so I guess I'm not bringing much to the table.

But once upon a time, Cactus, aka Man Vs. Margarita (spoiler: margarita wins), was my jam come summer months. They served, prior to the great tortilla revolution of 2007, the best nachos in the Southeast Gold Coast and it was also the only place I was willing to be seen in public drinking a frozen alcoholic beverage.

Margs and 'chos were where it ended though. As soon as it got dreary out, Cactus was generally a lackluster place to be, and its neighbor to the North, Melvin's, with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever, was downright depressing.

Having combined the old Cactus and Melvin B's, Cedar Hotel is exactly what you'd expect - an absolute warm-weather shitshow. The drink menu is beachy and lowbrow, but the food is surprisingly decent. I quite enjoyed my Korean-style tacos. That said, I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant with the aplomb to so brazenly serve crinkle cut truffle fries. It's basically a big fuck you the whole concept of fresh cut potatoes. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at an establishment where cocktails are offered in different sizes.

As long as you know what you're getting into though, it's actually not a horrible place. Prices are reasonable. I look forward to returning in 15 or 20 years when I'm divorced.

A sunny afternoon in the Viagra Triangle with time to kill. Hmm . . . .what's a girl to do? Sit outside and watch the people walk by, with vodka and lemonade in hand, seemed like a good plan and with that in mind I walked onto the patio of the Cedar Hotel. With it's transformation from Melvin B's, this place is actually okay now- especially in the summer with the large patio out front.

I was immediately seated with a prime people watching seat, handed a menu by a friendly server and greeted by who I can only assume was the manager.

My drink, in it's plastic cup was cool and refreshing. As I looked around- it was clear to me that this place has a target audience of 22 year olds (even in the middle of the day) but for me and a couple of paper reading gents who were also there- it was fine for the moment.

I am sure all the pleasant service I was getting was in deference to my age (being a "few" years older than the target-ha!) but who cared? The sun was shining, the drinks were cold and as I waited for my friends to arrive, all was right with my world.

They have a couple of TV's turned toward the patio so if you want to catch a game you can sit and watch. And the large shade trees on the patio as well as the awning protect you from the heat of the sun if that is your goal.

I've come by the Cedar Hotel at night and have almost recoiled from the noisy, drinking frat boys and their girls who seem to frequent this place. But on this one sunny day, with just a couple of others on the patio, some reading their papers with coffee and some just enjoying the day, I felt at home. Almost as if I was a guest in a "hotel" and relaxing before continuing on my way.

Not bad for a place that used to be known for it's sticky floors and "less than desireables" who used to hang here. The Cedar Hotel was a pleasant surprise, for sure!

I remember bemoaning the demise of the old Melvin B.'s and Cactus when both shut down late in 2007 to yield to the real estate boom.  In the winter, there really was no use for either bar.  But in the summer, it was a go-to beer garden and another option in the Rush Street scene.  We kissed both goodbye on their final weekend in 2007.

Shortly thereafter, The Great Recession and housing bust took a firm grip which they still are stubborn to relinquish.  That was bad news for the developers who were planning on converting that building to condos and great news for Rush Street drinkers.  Why, hello again Melvin, uh, oh I mean Cedar Hotel.

There's not a whole lot to be said about Cedar Hotel because it's basically the same thing Melvin B.'s was.  The only difference is that they appear to have done work on the bar inside and that there are no televisions outside anymore (boo!).  You can still check out the whole Rush Street scene here as you did before the name change.  It doesn't have a lot of competition, but it is the best beer garden south of Division Street.

    Four stars.

Blah. I was here last night, unfortunately. The clientele is the biggest tool collection meets Viagra triangle. The only reason to ever want to go here is for the huge beer patio, but of course, soon as we entered, they started packing away all the tables and chairs.

I left the Cedar Hotel with a hard sigh and a head shake, and a tear rolled down my cheek. The preconceived notions I had formed in my head were affirmed with disgusting vigor. My girlfriend and I sat at the bar, and proceeded to order a 'drink.' We were handed a 'menu...' a 'drink menu...'

On this menu were a bunch of great chauncey sounding frozen vodka drinks, which after eliminating the (hit me in the face if i ever order a) vodka cranberry, or (castrate me if I ever order a) vodka redbull jager monster energy whiskey sponsored by Ohio State, sounded pretty good. We found out they had no frozen shit in the frozen shit maker. Ok, I suppose handing me a menu in which 1/3 of is unavailable is acceptable business practice. I ordered a beer. The Sierra Nevada IPA I ordered came to me in the bottle. I would MAYBE, POTENTIALLY understand if IPA's were supposed to be consumed in something like a flute or tulip glass and by some stretch of the imagination this beer was new or something....BUT... EYE PEE AAAHZ COME IN PINT GLASSES. NOT BOTTLES. IPAS COME IN PINT GLASSES.

BEERS NEED GLASSES. I'M NOT PAYING $6 FOR A FUCKING BEER IN A FUCKING BOTTLE. IF I WANTED TO CHUG BEER OUT OF A FUCKING BOTTLE I WOULD BE OUT BACK WITH A FORTY PISSING IN YOUR ALLEY.

Needless to say this lobotomized lump of human feces behind the bar was both unhelpful and clearly needed to find another profession.

Its extremely unfortunate the owners of this 'establishment' had so much spent to design the place beautifully, but can't hire an employee to save their lives (or their business). Its extremely saddening. I cannot for the life of me comprehend WHY people are allowed to take a building as beautiful as the Cedar Hotel is, and turn it into something to fear more than the AIDS crisis, or nuclear war, or anthrax.

The only reason this isn't ONE star is because I understand there are a lot of people who will show up to the Cedar Hotel only thinking about their g-strings, or the Bentley of their date, and the sheer fact that there's alcohol in front of them is all that matters. Here's to you!

The beer garden definitely helps to try and make this place amazing.  It's huge, in a perfect location, and attracts some of Chicago's finest.

Unfortunately, there are so many things wrong with this place that, if changed, would make this place SO much better!

So here are my 3 cents.

To start, having no beers on draft totally sucks.  Sure, some beers taste better in a bottle, but isn't it a health/safety/code hazard to have all those glass bottles on the patio, potentially breaking into mini pieces and slicing up the feet of unsuspecting flip-flop wearing babes and dudes?  And at $6 a pop?  With NO specials?  EVER?!!?!  Yikes.  That's $36 per 6-pack of Corona, people.

Secondly, the 16oz/24oz liquor drink cups - they look a little small to me, more like 12oz/16oz cups.  And at $10/$14 a piece, they need to be a bit less icy and a bit more F-U up!  The margarita was a bit too tangy for my liking.

Lastly, the bathroom situation.  A bar this big needs more than 2 urinals and 1 toilet.  Even more, the bar needs two urinals that aren't within 5 inches of each other, but if they can't do that, they at least need to put a longer wall in between the two.  I was practically taking a piss on the person next to me because we were so close.  Worse off, the mirror on the wall reflected directly on the urinal I was at, so anyone who walked in could see my stage frieght/giant package.  And I mean GIANT.

A few minor changes and we can be friends moving forward.

You would think as the owner of a one-of-a-kind beer garden setup in the heart of the Gold Coast that observed the packed summer afternoons at the former Melvin B's, you would serve draft beer...

Well, you'd be wrong.  Not only to do they not have draft beer, the bottled beer they do have is extremely over priced.  Additionally, mixed drinks are on the weak side and cost more than usual.  Drink specials do not exist.  Service was slow and not very friendly. With the right management and business plan this place could be the hottest bar in the Gold Coast.

Let's just say this place left a lot to be desired.  I wouldn't recommend Cedar Hotel to anybody.

Before I ever moved to Chicago my husband and I had a blast on your patio.  We visited, due to a friends invite, we had no clue what to expect.  Great patio, great service, and great people watching!  Yes, all of that remains the same.  Unfortunately, I do not recall these prices.  $14 for a drink!! Yes, they advertise it is twice the size of a normal drink and "it's a take home cup!"  How about this, keep the cup, pour the alcohol, and serve the drink!
