Solid Thai food and a great ethnic food option in Charlestown. Â Everything I've tried here is good. Â My favorites are the pad thai and the chicken and shrimp mango curry. Â They do really good take out business. Â The service is always very nice and sometimes the owner comes to your table to personally thank you which is a nice touch. Â They used to give out tootsie rolls with your bill but don't do that anymore. Â It was oddly funny, but now that it is not there, I sort of miss the quirkiness! ha. Â Closed on Mondays, fyi.
Review Source:My first time getting food here, I got take-out, and was not disappointed. The woman on the phone was so nice! When the delivery guy came he was also in a fantastic mood yay!
I ordered the pineapple curry fried rice..something along those lines..I got vegetable with no meat. It was sooo good! The pineapple with the curry flavor (and the soy I added) was such a great combo! I had never had it before and I will be ordering it again! The portions were large, I had the rest for lunch the next day.
From reading all the reviews about the service I will be dining in the restaurant next time around to experience it myself. yay for yummy fried rice in ctown!
High quality Thai food at reasonable prices and amazingly friendly and helpful staff.
I've been satisfied by every dish that I've ordered. The Pad Thai is always a hit. I love the drunken noodles: the perfect balance of sweet, sour and spicy, with excellent wide-cut noodles. The fresh rolls are wonderful, too.
The staff are amazingly friendly and I always feel welcome upon walking through the door. The owner seems to always be parked at the sushi bar, which I appreciate. He all but implored us to borrow some of the travel books on display near the door. Charlestown benefits from having these types of neighborhood restaurants.
I do not appreciate that the curry dishes do not come with a side of rice. I understand that margins are small for these dishes, but how can you serve a Thai curry without rice!
The ingredients shine through in all dishes. Proteins and vegetables are fresh and flavorful. The prices reflect the quality of the ingredients, offering a solid value.
Overall, I recommend Chow Thai.
I will give it two stars because it was very clean and the woman that took my order was very nice. However, the food was not good. My pad thai actually tasted like nothing. I didn't know that was possible.... but it tasted like I was just eating nothingness. And then i didn't feel great after. Bummer because I love Thai food and this is close to work, but I don't think I'll be going back.
Review Source:Delicious. I have been itching to try this place out ever since I moved to Charlestown a month ago. And it did not disappoint! I got the pad thai, since that's always my litmus test for a Thai restaurant. They had the option to add spice - which makes me very happy (not every place does). Â And they have fresh rolls (aka summer rolls), which also makes me happy. Portion size was large, price was fair, and ambiance was adorable. I'll be a regular!
Review Source:I really wanted to like this place since it's right here in Charlestown.... I asked my co-worker about it, and she described it as tasting like "airplane food." Â -_- Â Stubbornly, I still went ahead and ordered from here one day and all I can really say is she was dead on! I order pad thai and asked for it to be spicy-- I got really crappy noodles all clumped together, no flavor and barely any chicken (tiny random pieces.. and the tofu was super cheap quality, too). The thing that killed me was that the pad thai was this orangey/red color and tasted like your run-of-the-mill 'hot sauce.' I mean the kind you might put on hot wings...! gross.
It was also overpriced for thai. Never again!!
I ate at  Chow Thai again last night with my neighbor.  I don't write a review each time I eat here, but it's been awhile since I checked in.  My opinion remains the same; Chow Thai serves very good, high quality Thai food with excellent service.  As I mentioned before, this kid loves Asian food in general, and Thai food in particular.
As always, the staff and the owner, Dan, are super nice folk. They're genuinely eager to make sure that everything tastes great and that your experience is a good one. Â Chow Thai makes me long for the days of neighborhood restaurants with an owner who is a warm presence among the patrons.
Chow Thai is a wonderful Charlestown restaurant with very nice owners and very good food. Â I have been coming here for 10 years and it is the only restaurant in Charlestown that I eat at regularly. Â It is also reasonably priced and one of the only C'Town places that is not either expensive or a pizza shop or sports bar (we need more moderately priced, less stuffy restaurants here badly!). Â Dan and his wife are super friendly and accomodating.
My only negatives concern the take out service, especially when its busy. Â I see that some people have had bad experiences with this. Â My personal experience has been fair - occasionally they get something wrong with an order or the wait time is much longer than quoted on the phone. Â But they succeed most of the time and they try hard to please, something not all establishments care about. Â I am very happy to patronize this place and their continued success speaks volumes about their many happy customers.
The food was fairly typical Thai food and the service was horrendous. Â We were the only people in the restaurant and we still had to get up from the table and ask a waitress to take our order.
So why the seemingly generous 3 stars? Â
-Our food came out (disturbingly) fast when we actually did order. Â
-We had two children in our party and although they were being a little rowdy, the staff didn't seem to mind at all. Â
-The manager came out to ask us how everything was going and he seemed very nice.
That being said, I may order take out but I wouldn't be back to dine in this restaurant.
another followup, my gf waited 2 hours and Dan provided some bs excuse about forgetting the credit card slip, not to mention the food tasted like top notch ramen noodles (not a compliment) after 2 hours of sitting around. Â WE WILL NEVER ORDER FROM HERE AGAIN...I WILL GO TO THAILAND FIRST!!! Â
1st rule of business-be straight with the customer.
2nd rule of business-when you do something wrong, admit it. Â This is a continuous pattern of inconsistent to down-right crappy service. Â Hold off for Thai till you go in town...order a pizza or just make it yourself...this place is so frustrating...don't let it happen to you.

Follow-Up Review 3 star
So after writing this my girlfriend received a letter in the mail, with a gift certificate for a free meal. Â Dan apologized and said he realized he was off that night, or something to that extent. Â We had the same food-it was delivered promptly, warm and good. Â I may order here again some time, but I will be careful about my timing. Â Thank you Dan for making things right.

Old Review - One star
We ordered here just yesterday and the food was ok-definitely not something to brag about as Thai food goes-but I am sure with Charlestown's somewhat limited options-it's on the short list for a lot of Townies.
So my g.f. says, want to try Chow Thai-she being a regular and I having never tried it-I am down.
We order some Pad Thai, Rice-nothing special...
At 6:00pm on the dot we place our order on the phone. Â My girlfriend speaks to one lady, then speaks to the owners wife. Â She knows these people-and has dealt with them before. Â She even has told me that in the past, they are a little slow, so when the lady tells her 35 minutes-we know it will be at least 45. Â At 7:10 to the minute (we know this because of cell phone time-stamp), we call back just to see if they are in route, or what the deal is. Â Keep in mind it's not even 3 minutes from the restaurant-probably less.
She gets the owner, Dan and he's clearly discombobulated-but the long and short of it is that he says it's on the way. Â How he knows this is a bit disconcerting because he admittedly just showed up-but it's his business-and we did give him the address-so we relax a bit-although now we are getting very hungry...
At 7:46 we have to call back again. Â We realize it's busy at this time of night-but DON'T TELL A CUSTOMER IT'S GOING TO BE 35 MINUTES WHEN IT'S GOING TO BE AN HOUR+!!!
Now my girlfriend is super polite-she works in customer service and treats people like she'd like to be treated. Â She even says Dan is a very nice guy and that she doesn't think she could yell at him if she wanted to. Â So from what I could hear-and what she said, Dan handles it very poorly-even having the nerve to say, "I tell you what I am going to do, I am going to put you ahead of the other orders and my customers in the dinning room"...like this was a favor to us. Â The order was almost 2 hours ago-WE ARE AHEAD OF THE OTHER CUSTOMERS!!! Â We have to decide on what to do-and given we are starving now we say yes... Â
Our food order comes at 8:15pm. Â She talks to Dan downstairs and tells him that it was poorly handle and pretty darn unacceptable. Â I am sure it was still pretty controlled-where myself and a lot of us would have let him really have it. Â Dan said something like "into every life must a little rain fall"..? Â I guess his point being, this really ain't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, and we know that...BUT, if I had that attitude whenever something went VERY WRONG with a customer and said something so obtuse, then I wouldn't be in business.
Frankly I know a lot of people will still order from there regardless of reviews-after all-it's the only game in town-but frankly with such a callous attitude I wouldn't order from here again if the option were that or never having Thai food again. Â Regardless of what kind of guy Dan has been prior-I think the way he dealt with us is despicable and people like that don't deserve anyone's business. Â In business-when you are wrong-say you're wrong and be sincere. Â Do what you can to make it better and don't treat people like they don't matter. Â As far as I am concerned this is just another example of people succeeding despite themselves. Â I guess I am glad I know a lot better Thai places too-because frankly, this Thai is mediocre at best!!!
My girlfriend and I ordered take out last night from Chow Thai. Â It took me 20 minutes to get through busy signals to place the order and then it took an hour for them to deliver. Â We ordered 2 entrees and 2 apps and our bill was over $40. Â I would have been okay with this if the food was as good as the reviews on here. Â Unfortunately, the food arrived cold and was very mediocre. Â The app portions were very small and overall what we got wasn't worth the cash. Â
Our overall experience was pretty disappointing as the reviews on here were all very positive. Â We might try this again, but only because there aren't many delivery/ takeout options in Charlestown.
I heard nothing but good things about this place, even before I did the background check before our first dinner date here. Chow Thai, you checked out just fine!
I met my friend here for dinner. I found parking right outside, and instead of plopping myself down at the bar and waiting for her, I sat at the entrance on a little bench and amused myself with my phone until she arrived. The foot traffic in this place for take out is amazing during the week! I saw upwards of 12 people come to pick up orders on a Tuesday or whatever night it was. I was impressed.
We were able to choose our table, when she arrived, so we sat just past the separation wall, and ordered a bottle of wine and some tom yum soup, her's extra spicy, mine just regular.
We each got an order of padthai and I have to say, it was not bad. I was going to get ballsy and order something else, but I didn't want to be disappointed (which usually happens when I almost order something out of the norm...) and when I wolfed down my plate of pad thai, I have to say I was not disappointed. At all.
If I didn't feel the need to try new thai places, I would be back here in a heartbeat. It's a short drive from my house, the parking is usually pretty easy to deal with on this part of Main street, and the prices and service are pretty damn good. I want to go back to try the lunch specials, cause from what I was reading on the menu, it looks like a pretty good deal. They also have sushi, which I'll have to go back and try...
Chow Thai, we'll be seeing more of each other in the near future!
I looked through my reviews of Charlestown today, and was shocked to find that I had not yet reviewed Chow Thai!
This is the ONLY good take-out/delivery place in Charlestown, with the exception of Figs which is a bit too upscale for Sunday Football or an on-a-whim delivery. Chow Thai has normal delivery food prices and the quality is excellent.
I've ordered pretty much standard fare here - pad thai, drunken noodles, thai fried rice, thai lo mein. They're all very good and have plenty of vegetables and the wonderful thai taste (not like chinese fried rice or lo mein). I get shrimp in all my dishes and sometimes they skimp on the shrimp, but c'est la vie. The taste is all there.
My personal favorite dish, however, is the mango curry. It comes as almost a curry stew with mangoes and vegetables and seafood (that's just what I order.) Mixed in with brown rice it's fruity and light-tasting, with that lovely slow and spicy kick that sneaks up on you a minute after each bite. It tastes tame but will definitely clear out your sinuses.
I've never dined in, but the restaurant itself is adorable and the staff is very friendly and familial. As for take-out, I see a few (valid) complaints about take out service time. Let's talk expectation setting: if they tell you to come pick it up in 30 minutes, leave your Charlestown abode in 45 and it might be ready by the time you get there. Knowing to leave later will help keep you happy and satisfied with their service.
Don't bother with the sushi. The sushi rice tastes funny - like it has a strong cucumber flavor. I like my sushi to be bright but it's too bright when mixed in with all the spicy deliciousness I order for sushi.
Can someone tell me where to get good sushi near Charlestown?
Chow Thai is closed on Mondays. womp womp.
I will admit, I do not really like to be adventurous in my food choices. That's why I love the Chow Thai Cafe. They have delicious food, and I don't feel scared of their menu because I know it is going to be delicious.
When I lived in Boston, my friends lived in Charlestown and this was a great experience every time. Â The food was delish and the cost was just right.
My favorite part is when you get to sign the "book" at the end of the night complimenting the food and service! MISS YOU Chow Thai Cafe! Can't wait to come back!
This place is exactly what it should be: good food, reasonable prices, friendly staff, and great location. The location aspect should probably be elaborated. I've lived in Charlestown for nearly three years and Chow Thai is the only place in the area where you can sit down and get a good, large meal for under $15. Okay, okay, I guess you could also go to Friendly's, the 99 Restaurant, or a bunch of the pizza joints in town... but, come on. Chow Thai is infinitely better and everyone in C-town should know it.
The place even brings in a sushi chef a few times a week to concoct some nice rolls and sashimi (it's darn cheap, too!). Great for a quick lunch or excellent take-out. If you live in or around Charlestown, Chow Thai should be on your radar.
Value, service, quality, friendly, menu, specials - Chow Thai has it all. Simple little restaurant, low on pretense and high on  good food. The Sushi specials on Thursday and Sunday are great, particular the beautifully prepared rolls. The crispy Thai noodles are excellent. Love the beef triangle things I had as an appetizer.
We have slowly discovered how wonderful Chow Thai is after attending Yoga next door. We're hooked. Dan the owner reaches out to meet you. The waitresses are adorable. What a find! If you want informal, medium priced, quality Thai food or sushi it's worth the trip. Lots of on street parking, Full bar.
Great Spot. Service depends on person. Yummie dishes. Street Parking.
My boyfriend comes here often for lunch since he works down the street. There's a lunch special for additinal $1.50 which includes 3 appetizers (usually small crab rangoon, egg roll, and some other small appetizer) and a really really good vegetable soup. Â The spicy pad thai is SOOOOO good here. I ordered the red curry which was also really great but the pad thai was so good I wanted to reach over to my boyfriends plate and slurp up all his noodle deliciousness. I could have easily eaten his too!
The girl who brought us our water hardly spoke or looked at me. I said thank you for the menu and the water and i heard crickets. She may have been shy. The waitress who took our order was really friendly and smiley. I love that!
When they gave us our check, it came in this notebook that contained notes and thank you's from past customers. SUPER CUTE. What a charming idea. We wanted to write in it but it was full haha. The check also came with tootsie rolls. My boyfriend who has the biggest sweet tooth, ate them all. And our change came back in a diary... again, with more notes from past customers.
Would definitely come back again if i'm in the area.
Nothing to write home about here---very Americanized Thai food. Â Thick, sweet, syrupy currys, congealed coconut soups, but in a part of town with almost no take-out, Chow Thai gets the job done. Â In the land of the flavorless, the guy with too much soy sauce is king?
Still, Chow Thai's service is great, and the food certainly isn't bad. Â Their Thai iced tea is ok, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't going back.
I have been meaning to come here for almost a year, and  I finally made it the other day.  The place is super cute on the inside!  It's quite tastefully decorated, especially compared with some other Thai restaurants I've dined at.  And the service is very attentive. Â
Unfortunately, I wasn't particularly hungry, so I only ordered an appetizer and a thai iced tea. Â The thai iced tea was perfection! For my appetizer I had the fresh rolls, which i wasn't super impressed with (they weren't very tightly rolled and I didn't really like the tofu in them). Â I'll definitely be back because I think if I ordered an actual meal I'd be more satisfied. Â My dining companion ordered some beef curry dish which he was pleased with. Â
I will definitely be coming back to sample their entrees when I have a more hearty appetite! Â I am also intrigued by their sushi (which is offered occasionally).
I live close to this place and have wanted to try it for a while. My friend and I went here last Thursday. Menu looked really good and it took us a while to choose what we wanted. It's small but very cute and everything looked clean. Our waitress didn't speak great English but she listened and did a good job of bringing what we wanted.
We both ordered the Tom Yum Soup and shared the vegetable tempura appetizer. The soup was SO GOOD. Very fresh and tasty. The tempura appetizer was good and the ginger-soy sauce was sweet and salty and went so well with the tempura. We also split the spicy bamboo shoot entree and I asked to have some other ingredients put into it and it was done perfectly. We got a side order of steamed whit rice. Everything was delicious.
To top off this nice visit, the owner of the restaurant stopped us and asked us how our meals were and if we lived in the area. It's nice to see management has interest other than when people complain.
Will definitely return and will try to understand our waitress better next time....
The lunch special here is a great deal. The prices are reasonable $7-$8 for a large portion and for an extra $1.50 you can add on a soup and four appetizer sampler. So I chose the Drunken Noodle which was $7.25 with chicken, then added the sampler to add up to a tasty $10 filling lunch.
I heard the drunken noodles here were great through yelp. I thought they were very good, spicy, generous amount of chicken, could of been a tad bit moister with the sauce though. The appetizers they gave were a chicken wing, crab wonton, spring roll, and some other dumpling. They were all good. I especially like the crab wonton. I would get a full size of those next time.
Service was friendly with a sweet vibe. Every time the girl came around she had s big smile on her face ready to serve. When it was time for my bill, it arrived with a small notebook of guest comments. I read some of them, they were all positive, especially raving about the pad Thai. I added a comment myself thanking them for a tasty lunch and warm hospitality.
Chow Thai is such a great neighborhood place.
Dan, the owner, is the nicest guy ever. He always remembers you when you come in, makes conversation, and genuinely cares about how you are doing.
My favorite foods at Chow Thai include their lunch specials, Thai rolls, Shumai, Chicken with Cashew Nut/Ginger and Scallion, Pad See Ew, Pad Thai, and Sticky Rice with Mango!
I have had their BBQ Chicken in the past and sometimes it is good/sometimes not so good.
They now have sushi on select nights. I can't wait to go in and try it.
Prices are extremely reasonable, great location, pleasant environment, and excellent service. It can't get much better!
It may be some sort of ridonculously stereotypical thing to say, but Thai people have GOT to be the nicest people in the world.
Seriously.
Walk into or call Chow Thai Cafe, or call for delivery, and you will not be disappointed. Yep. Nicest people EVER.
They're so nice, you'd forgive them for making bad food. But you don't have to! The food is excellent. I've been there several times, tried many different dishes, and have yet to be disappointed. Prices are reasonable, too.
Highly recommended.
This is a very cute little Thai restaurant run by a very sweet couple. You really feel welcome here, like you've just walked into their dining room as their guest. The service is always friendly, and the place has a cozy atmosphere, filled with plenty of light, comfortable seating, and even books to browse while you wait.
I have been here for lunch several times, and I always opt for one of the lunch specials, served with appetizers, soup, and a generously sized entree all for under $10. You can't beat that!
Very extensive menu and giant portions. I rarely stray from my usual Thai selections of veggie pad thai and veggie tom yum soup, and have to say the pad thai was pretty decent. The crab rangoon, not so much, and the tom yum could have used a lot less mushrooms. (Really, I felt like I was eating mushroom soup). Although, the broth was yummy.
There was enough pad thai for two more meals, so incredible value for your money. Â They do deliver, but it seems on a very random basis (like the day of a really rainy storm, the delivery guy was out).
Chow Thai is adorable in a "I could just be eating Thai at a friend's house" sort of way. I loved that there were to two bookcases full of travel books, even though I have no idea what purpose they serve.
The food is decent, and they serve Thai wine and beer. The portions are only slightly generous, which is great if you go out to eat thinking, "it'd be great to go to a chill, local restaurant that won't wreak havoc on all my dietary resolutions," but isn't great if you go out to eat thinking, "man, I want a boatful of Thai food. Seriously, like a mountain of it."
This is the kind of place where after your first experience, you're like, "wtf, those were the NICEST people EVAH" and find yourself going back over and over again. Â As mentioned, the owners are very interested in talking to their customers, which I find endearing and welcoming in such a crass town. Â I love the little sign-book if you eat in.
Pick up times are a bit long, but well worth it. Â I only order 1 thing and 1 thing only from this place because it is the best freakin piece of fried meat this side of the mason dixon, the Crispy Duck Choo-Chee. [drool]
I miss Chow Thai so much that I'll make a special trip a few times a year to 'chow down' in Charlestown. Â The owners are incredibly nice, the service is always very quick, genuine and kind, and the take out I've always had excellent luck with unless it's prime time (Friday and Saturday night) when things get a little backed up. Â
This is the type of place that the staff and owners know you by name; the food is excellent, fresh, and deliciously prepared. Â The dining room is simple, clean, and comfortable as well. Â I really don't have a bad thing to say about Chow Thai, if you live in Charlestown and haven't eatten here; get your ass over there NOW! You won't regret it!
This is my local Thai restaurant and as such is pretty good food-wise when you are craving thai and don't feel like venturing "off island". Â However, the take out service needs some work. Â Double the time they tell you on the phone if you plan on getting take out Friday through Sunday night. Â The drunken noodle rules and I also love the Chicken Penang!
