Let me preface this by saying I hate being negative in regards to restaurants or bars. I always prefer to give anywhere I go the benefit of the doubt. However, this is the second time I've been to Dubbs. The first time, the new bartender was too busy getting berated by the drunk customers and got distracted. Fair enough, not her fault. She got us our order and discounted it. Write off the bad experience to the customers, right?
Tonight, my girlfriend and I went in for a (yes one, singular) drink. The two bartenders on staff were clearly drunk from the minute we walked in. Instead of welcoming us, they were pouring shots for themselves and some other patrons that were clearly their friends. They asked my girlfriend for her order, ignored me, and proceeded to forget her order as well. After five minutes, we chased them down, repeated just her order and were handed a draft beer (that was marked as a special mind you) that was 25% beer and 75% foam. They still ignored me.
Finally I chased them down and ordered my drink, at that point downsized from something they would have to mix to a Stone IPA. I asked for the check as well. In return I got an unopened beer and blank stares. After repeating our combined order multiple times, we got a receipt that was clearly wrong. It was less than what we would have ordered, so we let it be. We paid and I specifically left no tip and instructed my girlfriend to do the same. Walking home in the rain was better than my experience at this bar. Compared to all the other decent bars in Mainstrasse, you owe it to yourself and everyone that spends their money in this area to save your money and let this bar die the slow death it deserves. Spend your money elsewhere. I might check out the location when I hear there is new ownership. I suggest you do the same.
A much needed night of alcohol consumption brought me to Dubbs Irish Pub in Covington. It's a small bar, with an equally small back patio, but it wasn't overly crowded so it didn't really matter. Covington always attracts a very diverse crowd. Anyone can feel comfortable in Covington.
It is located across the street from Fatty Pattys pizza which we wandered over drunkenly to a few hours later after deciding there was no way we could make it to Hyde Park for sushi without someone getting arrested for a DUI. I didn't check in- again, too drunk.. But we ordered a pizza to go, carried it back over to the bar and a group of us ate it.
The bartender, whose name I didn't catch- was awesome. We stood out front for the majority of the night prior to the pizza, and she actually gave us window service. That's right. There's a small window next to the bar (not for that purpose) but she came to the window and delivered us drinks through the duration of the night. Again- I wouldn't go there expecting this kind of treatment but you never know! You could be as lucky as we were.
Overall, a nice little spot to chill. Not much room to sit down inside. Or outside for that matter. There were a couple tables and chairs outside but they brought them in around 1am, leaving even less seating. It didn't matter for us though, since we were just standing outside most of the night anyway. I would give it three stars, but because the bartender was so great, I'd say that deserves an extra star.
