It's great to have a place with great food and beer for cheap in walking distance from my house! Â I love their pretzels and beer cheese and fish and chips. Â But I'm slightly obsessed with their veggie burger. Â I think they put pickles in the veggie patty, genius! Â I only gave it 4 stars because every time I've been in there the bartenders were really rude. Â The servers at the table are extremely friendly, but the bartenders act like you are inconveniencing them when you ask about the different beers. Â They also have a great patio and the service is always quick! Â Oh and don't try to go on Monday because they are closed. Â I went there on a Monday with a veggie burger craving and I was sad they weren't open!
Review Source:Eating at Four Pegs is akin to flying coach or staying in an economy motel room. Â The food will get you full and is reasonably tasty but the restaurant lacks basic conveniences that are standard in many restaurants like printed menus or soft drink refills. Â The first time I walked in the door at Four Pegs I was surprised to learn that the only available menu was a chalkboard on the wall with writing that was barely legible in the dim room. Â Another chalkboard on an adjacent wall held the beer selections and was half erased. Â Rather than beer I ordered a soft drink and was surprised to be handed a can of Diet Coke and a glass of ice. Â I tried the highly praised chicken and waffle sandwich. Â It was huge and I could only eat half of it during that sitting. Â The chicken had a spicy rub on it that was inconsistent with an authentic chicken and waffle flavor but it was still tasty. Â However, I strongly prefer Dish on Market's chicken and waffles to this rendition. Â Overall Four Pegs isn't a bad restaurant or bar but I'm just not quite a fan.
Review Source:i love this place. Â i really do. Â my only gripe (and i think it's a pretty significant one) is that there is a lack of consistency. Â I have had the chicken and waffle sandwich twice; the first time it was a gooey, messy, divine experience. Â the second time i ordered it, it seemed to me a whole tin of blackening seasoning or some other hot, overused "spice blend" fell into the dredge mix. Â it was pretty close to inedible for me. Â the waffles on the top and bottom of the chicken were delish, so at least i got to eat something.
on my very first visit to 4 pegs, my date and i both ordered and LOVED the fish and chips. Â we both commented that the coating on the fish was remarkably light and crispy, just a gentle dusting of something respectful of the fish's flavor. Â then the next time i ordered it, i was given something more like long john silvers oily, artery clogging mess. Â hugely disappointing.
i've had the burger once. Â let's see what happens the next time i order it!
I've been here twice and I've loved it both times. I had the chicken and waffle sandwich both times because it was so delicious the first time, I just couldn't resist it the second time around. The fries were also great. I tried the bourbon burger that my husband ordered and it was also fabulous.
They have great, reasonably priced beers and a nice patio. I'm a sucker for outdoor seating so any place with a good deck or patio is a winner in my book.
Beer, more beer, chicken & waffles, and more beer; what's not to love about this place. I went to college with the owner and several people on staff. They all know their beer, and only the best beers make it on tap. All of the food is good, but you must get the chicken and waffle sandwich if you haven't had it before. This is a hipster bar that welcomes non-hipsters. This is a great addition to the germantown bar scene.
Review Source:The chicken and waffle sandwich was every bit as good as I had heard. Â We came on a Saturday night and the staff was really nice, it's a small place and not a lot of tables, but they went out of their way to help us get a table. Â We've been to some bar/restaurants like this where they don't care if you stay or go.
Our group shared the beer cheese and pretzel bread, some of the best beer cheese I've had. Â My husband and I shared the beer glazed burger and chicken and waffle sandwich. Â Both delicious, my favorite, the chicken and waffle sandwich. Â The chicken was peppery and juicy and the waffle was really yummy and came with a sweet maple glaze. Â The burger was really good too. Â We ordered the edamame with one and fries with the other, edamame were good and fries weren't bad, but nothing to write home about. Â Husband loved the beer selection, I'm not much of a beer drinker so stuck with water. Â Great neighborhood hangout and reasonable prices. Â Will definitely be back!
This place definitely lives up to the hype!
Visited on Saturday night, already knowing that I would order the chicken and waffle sandwich. I heard it was big, but I didn't really believe that. 3 out of the 4 in our party ordered this and none of us could finish it! Even my husband, who NEVER wants to share a plate, said that next time we come (and we will be back!), we will have to split it. I had to let him down gently and let him know that I want to try the burger next time because it looked so.freaking.good. While the chicken and waffle sandwich was great, I think the best part of the meal was the fries!
I didn't order a beer, which I'm glad for since I wouldn't have had room for it, but I was super impressed by the beer selection and everyone in my party who had one enjoyed theirs.
I liked the location and the atmosphere (very minimal, no TVs). I was actually able to have a conversation and hear my friends clearly. The staff was very friendly as well.
I think that the next time I'll go back, I'll split a burger with the husband, get some extra fries, and drink at least 2 different beers!
Four Pegs has been on my radar screen for quite sometime. Â I finally had a chance to make it down around lunch time on a Saturday. Â I walked into a dimly lit bar with indie music playing. Â Awesome beer selection that was averagely priced. Â I got the beer cheese and pretzel as an appetizer (good) and went with the famous chicken and waffle sandwich (amazing). Â Waffle was warm and soft, chicken was perfectly cooked, and the maple syrup made everything go together perfectly. Â The fries were awesome too. Â Only knock I have on the place is they have no TV. Â I understand the atmosphere they are shooting for, but it would be nice to watch a ball game while eating and drinking. Â Besides that, the place is a home run.
Review Source:How have I gone 27 years without having the ecstasy of experiencing the wonder of POUTINE?!
Last night I had my first introduction to the super-food of fries smothered in cheese and gravy. Our table shared an order. Then we promptly decided that we needed a second order. If we hadn't been in public...I might have considered licking the bowl. Heavenly, I tell you.
Our main reason for being at Four Pegs though was, of course, the Chicken and Waffles. And they are not to be missed. Absolutely delicious!
A dark room full of hipsters may be the stuff of nightmares for some, but for me, Four Pegs was much more like a delicious dream.
I had the pretzel and beer cheese to start. The pretzels are long sticks rather than any kind of twisted configuration. The beer cheese was tangy and sharp. Good stuff!
I had the chicken and bacon quesadilla for dinner...and for a quesadilla which I generally expect a certain caliber of who-can-mess-up-a-quesadilla?, this was one of the greatest quesadillas I have ever consumed. I don't even know why - cheese, chicken, and bacon - simple but really great.
I tried a couple of different beers on tap. They keep their drafts changing all the time, and they do run out of popular ones, which is to be expected, but if you read online that they will have it and you're excited about it, don't be surprised if it's out by the time you arrive. Their bottles and cans list is full of cool beers to try too! Since some fancy beers can be expensive, keep in mind that on Wednesdays, some select drafts are $4 for a pint, and the same goes for Happy Hour 2-5pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Service is friendly and the clientele doesn't bite. I am looking forward to going again!
I have been here three times now and have thoroughly enjoyed my food each time. Â The burger is unique and very tasty, the fried green tomatoes are a very nice addition! I love that their beer menu changes frequently forcing me to branch out and try new beers. Â The bar tenders are also very helpful in recommending beers based on my description of what I usually prefer. Â On our most recent trip I tried a beer that had a smoked flavor. Â I wish I could remember the name. Â My husband and I determined that it most reminded us of grippos BBQ chips and beer! I will say this I think they could definitely use more seating and a better ordering system for food but I love the food and that's what will keep me coming back!
Review Source:We went here one night after my fiancé bought a groupon. We were pleasantly surprised about this place. She went with the chicken and waffles (still the best I've seen/tasted in the city). I had the fish and chips...both were excellent!
I love the rotating beer selection. Had a hoppin frog Christmas Ale that was insanely good, highly recommend...if I had one complaint, it's that the menu is slightly overpriced, but honestly that's just me nitpicking...
Check this place out for its cool ambience in Germantown, great beer selection, and really good food as well...
I visited four pegs a few weeks ago on a trip to Louisville from Cincinnati. Lets just say I keep dreaming about the dang chicken and waffles. I go to bed wanting them and I wake up crabby because I dont have them. Perfect Noms!
Beer selection was dyn-o-mite. I like my micro brews and the majority of their menu were beers I havent even heard of! I suggest the tasting flight of 6 beers...thats right 6.
Four Pegs strips and refines everything down to a great experience.
I was looking for  a delicious way to impress my boyfriend with some legit, well poured Left-handed milk stout (the requirement is that the brew must be nitro-tapped in order for it to pour correctly) and this bar is the place to beat.
Match that with an updated tap list on a chalk board as well as a food menu (kitchen open until 11~ish so awesome for a late dinner start) you have an excellent spot in Germantown.
We have both taken turns getting the chicken and waffle "sammich." Â Sammich is a term used to describe something called a 'sandwich' on the menu and is so delicious that you always have it in your mouth once it's on the table in front of you, and when you try to call it a 'sandwich' your mouth is so full that it's all you can pronounce. Â The concoction of crunchy chicken and soft sweet waffle has a savory balance to it and pairs beautifully with a dark creamy left-handed milk stout.
Great patio out back that we've enjoyed in the  summer months (citronella candles made for a comfortable  mosquito-free ambiance)  and the bar indoors is spacious as well as cozy with soft furniture present if you're not feeling the stools and bar height seating. Â
If you don't like chicken or waffles without one-another then you probably would still enjoy the sammich as it comes with homemade sea-salt fries. Â Ketchup/catsup is also homemade. Â YUM. Â
I've also tried the chicken and bacon quesedilla that was out-shined by the cx-wx sammich. Â But if you like veggie burgers, this place does those well too.
Bar tenders are nice and the place is clean. Â Reasonable prices too. Â $10 per plate and the pints are worth every penny.
Gluten Free Beer! You owe it to yourself to visit Four Pegs soon. A friend recommended the fried green tomatoes as the best in the city. I wouldn't go that far, but they are memorable. The chicken and waffles are the real stars of the menu and for good reason. The sandwich is a perfect combo of salty and sweet and I would recommend going all the way and adding smokey chili to the fries also. The beer selection is very respectable with rotating taps and a good bottle variety. Just one TV, so if you're here for more sports than conversation, you may want another spot. If you want to have a lengthy talk and great brews with friends, I would suggest you make the trip into Germantown.
Review Source:Superb burger. Love to eat here. Â Hate that the past two times I've gone the kitchen was not open, but I think I have a handle on their weird hours now.
Be warned: Four Pegs is not open on Mondays. Â I unfortunately found this out after waiting behind three trains for half an hour so that I could partake in the excellent burger, only to discover that the door was locked. Sad day.
I went there for dinner on the assumption that a rumor about their chicken and waffles had been over exagerated. I was wrong. Once I got past the whole "this is god awful for my body" mentality, I realized that it was one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth! The beer selection was good, but nothing really special. The one thing that disappointed was thier pretzel bread. The beer cheese was good, but I really didn't get to try it because an "order of pretzel bread" literally was one small breadstick in an otherwise empty basket. I asked if it was a mistake, but no. The appetizer is one small piece of pretzel. Â I recomend the place as a whole- very tasty! Just dont go for the beer cheese n pretzel. The End.
Review Source:I really enjoyed the food and the ambiance of four pegs. The staff were great and very low key, while being attentive to customers needs. A very cool place that is affordable and different. A mix between a local dive and hipster joint. Has an interesting selection of beers to choose from and a great old wooden bar to sit and enjoy a few. My quesadillas were a great snack to accompany my beer selection. The menu isn't huge but there were many items I would choose from. I will certainly be back again...I suggest you check it out for yourselves :)
Review Source:God bless 'Merica and God bless Germantown.
This is my scene. Â Except if you're on a diet, do not go here. Â Because you will simply not be able to stay away from the Chicken and Waffles once you've had them. Â It awakens tastebuds you didn't even know you had! Â Pair that with one of their delicious rotating beers on tap, and relax on the back patio to call it a night. Â They are even open late. Â My only grip is that they aren't open on Mondays, but I guess I can cut them a little bit of slack. Â
So, when should you go to Four Pegs? Â (because obviously it isn't a matter of "if you should go")
-Go on $4 pint night.
-Go with your neighborhood friends and snag a booth, munch on the balsamic covered edamame.
-Grab a book and sit quietly at the bar savoring your o-so-perfectly salted fried green tomatoes.
-Bring out-of-town guests here. Â I'm not even joking when I say that the people I've brought here months ago are still raving about their experience to anyone who will listen.
-Have a huge group, take up the back room! Order ALL of the appetizers.
-Find a stranger, sit them down, make a friend - because you will forever bond over the quesadillas. Â
-Right. Now. (Except if it is Monday, then you are S.O.L. and have to wait to experience the glory on Tuesday)
And that's all she wrote. God, that chicken and waffle sandwich is so good.
I need to give this place another shot food-wise.
Right off the bat I liked that they use iPads to enter orders/credit card processing.
My friend and I ordered beer (good of course) and chicken and waffles (which disappointed). Â I've never had chicken and waffles but the seasoning seemed "off" and I hated wasting the calories on something less than yummy. Â
I liked the ambiance enough that I will give it another shot and order something else off the menu. Â Seemed like a 20/30-something hipster crowd. Â Tons of plaid shirts.
The absolute best meal I had while in The Shep. Hands down.
I got the Beer Braised Angus Burger or some such. There is a picture below. It was, and I'm a bit of a burger snob here, the best burger I've had in my recent memory. I would have to probably dig to find something that approached this level of insanity.
I got it with the fried green tomatoes, and sauce they put on it, and paired it with one of the stouts they had. I wish I paid more attention, but the burger seriously pushed all thoughts of anything else out of my head.
I long for this piece of meat. Truly. I will probably never find myself in The Shep (or the surrounding area) ever again, and knowing I will never have this burger again makes it worse. I can replace it with other wonderful food, but this thing was out of this world, and I can never have it again.
I should write a love letter to this burger so it will know how deeply my soul longs for it's tender embrace. How much I miss the time we spent together, and how evil the world is for introducing us, and then making it impossible for us to ever be together again...
Stupid world.
Great bar though. Seriously.
Four Pegs has a very narrow focus: it knows what it wants to be and it does an excellent job of being just that. They have twelve beers on tap and a small menu of food that pairs wonderfully with those beers. We had a Groupon to use so we went in to relax on a Sunday afternoon and enjoy some food and beer.
The front room is nice and open with a long bar and a few tables and booths. All of the offerings are on a chalkboard in the back. Whenever you know what you want, you just go up to the bar and let them know. There were two to three guys working while we were there, one of whom was the owner. I really appreciated how laid-back and unpretentious these guys were. I know most of the other reviewers have mentioned that, but its bears repeating because too often it seems that anyone serving high-quality beers feels the need to have an attitude (it's like, relax man, I get it, you don't serve swill. No worries, I'm not here looking for a Bud Light).
As far as the actual food and drink, I knew I had to get the chicken waffle sandwich which I had heard about from my wife's previous visit here for a Yelp Elite event. It definitely did not disappoint. The chicken was perfectly fried and ate nicely with the generous, fluffy waffles and the interesting sauce that held it all together. My wife had the signature philly and I was fortunate enough to steal a few bites. We also had the pretzel and beer cheese. I would rate this beer cheese up there as one of the better ones I've had.
As far as beers, I had a Dogfish Head Midas Touch and a Stone Smoked Porter. Both were pretty awesome. The guys that work here are very knowledgeable about the beers they are serving and will provide whatever amount of information you want (if you know what you want, just order and they'll serve you; otherwise tell them what you're in the mood for and they'll recommend a beer).
All in all, Four Pegs is a great addition to the Germantown scene and is really helping to make a case for this area having the best foodie options, acre for acre.
Louisville, if there is one bar, in one neighborhood, and you can only have one experience to represent yourself -- however much you think it's anachronistic to do so because you want to have comb overs, collars and table cloths, this is the bar that you want to show off.
Tucked in a low key area -- Germantown, yeah? -- is a dimly lit, sparse, open space that is dense & rich with character. They serve beer here, folks. They have beers on tap, and there's a chalk board in the back where you can find there lively rotating taps. They serve food, too. It's all on that grand board that reminds you of your biggest fear in fourth grade -- having to go up there and spell "dope-alicious." Well... guess what... Four Pegs did it for you, and they spelled it with:
Dogfish 120. Green Flash IPA. Burger with smoked bacon and fried green tomatoes. Chicken and waffle sandwich. Vanilla Porter. Again... Chicken. And. Waffle Sandwich.
I knew exactly what I was drinking: Dogfish 120 -- their imperial IPA that I completely forgot hovers in the 13% abv range. It didn't stop me as this can't be found in Indiana any longer. But how do I decide on food? Bartenders, what do I do? They're split -- as they should be... oh, and of course there's the wild card of a philly cheese steak sandwich, too. I didn't realize at first there were fried green tomatoes on the burger... when I found that out... In. Somewhere in another corner of the world... there's an old man, after a long day at the office, drinking a martini and eating a steak -- a very plausible and gifted decision he made. My version... high "proof" ale & a prime burger.
Spacious seating -- including a room in the back -- a long old wooden bar... a smattering of tables... prime beer on tap, smiles behind the bar... and that's really all you need. The glorious food is a glorious cherry on top of this bar. This bar is a cherry on top of a perfect Sunday in Louisville, and I'll gravitate toward it every time I'm back in town.
Four pegs is exactly what you would want in a neighborhood bar - a no frills bar with great food and beer. Â When you walk in you'll find the bar is minimally decorated, however this seems to work for the place and adds to the atmosphere, I think. Â The menu is located on a chalkboard at the back of the restaurant. Â When you decide what you want to eat and drink you go up to the bar and place your order.
The menu offers a variety of entrees and appetizers to suit almost everyone, some nice spins on traditional pub favorites, and it's reasonably priced.  The highlight of menu is the chicken and waffle sandwich.  It's a thick piece of fried chicken covered with a mayo/maple glaze between two airy waffles.  For anyone who loves the combo of salty and sweet this is a must try. Four Pegs has a  beer menu that offers a wide range of craft beers that will make any beer lover smile.  However, I did not see any wine or alcohol on the menu or behind the bar, so I believe beer is your only option as far as alcohol goes (but I'm not a 100% positive).
Like what many of the other reviewers have said, I'll definitely be back.
Four Pegs is pure joy. Just a great bar.
You can't do any better than this if you want to eat well and drink well and kick back and be able to hear the person across the table speak. In this neighborhood, you're probably getting a better dinner at Eiderdown or Hammerheads, and it's hard to beat Nachbar for beer alone. But none of those places has the atmosphere or is the total package like Four Pegs.
I like that they keep it pretty simple. No band. No karaoke. No pitchers. No hard stuff. About a dozen menu items, very Louisville style (beer cheese, fried green tomatoes, burgers, chicken, etc.). A nice range of very good beers on tap. Everything is priced very reasonably. Don't change a thing.
Man, this place has just gotten better with age. Same great folks behind the bar that know their beers but lack any level of pretension that tends to go hand in hand. And tonight I had more than just samplings of the foods, I actually got my own chicken and waffle sandwich. It was killer. Salivating thinking about the perfectly cooked and seasoned fried chicken breast - no bones! - and two waffles on either side, with some ooey gooey goodness between each layer. Someone said it included mayo. I detected a hint of honey in the syrup. Whatever exactly it was it perfectly complimented the sammich. And my Breckenridge Vanilla Porter Stout was awesome and really reasonable. I also opted for a lovely side of some asian glazed edemame that was super tasty (for edemame!)
Thank you Four Pegs for being all that you can be. And for being located so conveniently close to my house.
Really cool little bar in Germantown. Went for a Yelp Elite event, and the lounge in the back was a great venue for us, if not a little chilly (I'm a wimp when it comes to cold though).
Great beer variety on tap, and yummy food, from what I tried. I'd definitely recommend it to beer lovers, especially once they get bottles and local brews on the menu. The owner seems like a really nice guy, along with all of the rest of the staff we interacted with. Definitely a place I'd love to support. I'll be back!
Why is it called Four Pegs?
I have a pretty creative imagination so I must admit that my thoughts went from lewd, to some elaborate game, to something to do with a German traditional holiday gift. The true name of this restaurant is meaningful and more of a mission statement.
Depending on the owners mood he may change up exactly how he came around to the name, but I like to think it was a little like this....(begin elaboration) On a cold and stormy night younger Smitty and his three friends were sitting around talking about their love of craft beers. Smitty exclaimed, "We can do this, we can start a restaurant". After a couple of years had gone by, Smitty was still as determined to go after this dream. He realized that a good bar must have a sold foundation. Just like him and his three friends, he had found the ability to grow and be successful. He knew that if he was going to have a successful business he too must figure out his four solid business points These four structures would be the next peg to making his business more successful. That's when, in the middle of the night, waking up in a cold sweat it dawned on him....FOUR PEGS!!
(Note: Smitty the owner asked for a little jazzed up story, so I took some creative license, but it's pretty much how it happened.)
Now that I have revealed the meaning to the name, I will explain the four pegs that will make this restaurant a success. So why only four stars you ask, well it's a growing business. Once there is some bourbon behind the bar, I'll be back to update!
First: Location- located in trendy Germantown, this restaurant is located right off Eastern Parkway. We are talking a small 5 minute ride from UofL and 10 minute ride from almost anything downtown. This place is easy to find. Like all Germantown venues there is only street parking, but this will not be a problem for where this place is located. The restaurant has a few tables, a lounge area, and a nice bar to hold any sort of patron experience.
Second: Product Selection-Trust me when I say there is not one french fry that the owner didn't take time in deciding, when choosing the best product to serve. Also, it's delicious! I tried the hummus with red pepper, the beer cheese, and the chicken waffle sandwich. I am making extra effort to workout this week because of the dreams I am having about this waffle sandwich. Â The beer selection as you will read from the other reviews are top notch. I asked for something similar to a Dunkel and was served the Karmaliet. The Karmaliet was one of the smoothest beers I ever tasted. I know for certain as their menu expands that the selection will be well thought out.
Third: Adaptation- Even though the owner is true to his vision, he understands the importance of customer feedback. Smitty let us Yelpers hold an event there knowing we would review the heck out of his place. He also knows he needs some local beers on tap from patron requests, he just has his standards and is waiting for some wow brands. He even has an ipad for his order system, the server can take your order, keep multiple tabs open, and charge on the ipad. This is pretty trendy for a small pub. My only disclaimer is your receipt can only be emailed or sent via text.
Fourth: The Owner- Every great place has a great person with a vision. You will not be able to even tell the owner in this place though because he will be cooking, cleaning, bartending, serving, and working like any good host would.
Please stop by and see why this place is about to be a corner foundation for the Louisville area.
I attended an event at this new pub in Germantown and had a wonderful evening swelling delicious brews and munching on delicious snacks. I must say first and foremost try the fried chicken and waffle sandwich with the maple/mayo dippin' sauce. Such a good idea to make that soul food delicacy a sandwich! I imagine more hip and original restaurants will be stealing that idea soon enough. Secondly, I asked the bartender for a dark non-stout perfect for a cold and wet night beer recommendation and he poured me up a Schneider Aventinus. Man did he nail it. I wanted to try the rest of the beers on tap (tried a few) but had to get seconds (maybe thirds kinda tipsy) on that one. Wowza, if you haven't already you have to try that one and if you don't like it I'll buy you a round next time I see ya.
Beyond the tasty treats I really liked the ambience. Very chill and comfy with a homey welcoming atmosphere. This bar is still brand spankin' new so they only have beers on taps and I believe they are still working on getting a full bar, so there is more to come in the future from this neighborhood gem.
If you're a beer snob and you like great bar food, this is the place to go in Germantown. Some friends and I went there for dinner and I got to sample the beer-glazed burger and try fish n' chips. Both were extremely satisfying and done right. I've never written a review, but I felt obligated to spread the word the food was so amazing. Even the French fries were the top-notch, crispy but not greasy. The guys at the bar were friendly and seemed like genuinely great people. They mentioned that the bar itself dated from the 1880's and if nothing else you should go in to check it out.
Review Source:I ventured through Germantown last night and hit up the newest spot on the block...Four Pegs. Â I think the vibe in this place is adorable. Â With the white wash walls and navy blue trim it feels like a cottage on the east coast. Â I also love the little touches including a floor lamp that I literally think was taken from my grandmother's basement. Â The best part of this new little spot? Â The couches in the back room. Â 3 big, comfy, leather couches fill the lounge area and make for a perfect place to relax with friends and get cozy on a cold night.
The only reason this place does not get five stars from me is their limited bar menu. Â I understand that they are a beer joint, but for now that is all they have. Â They are soon going to be adding wine and bourbon to their bar list, but still not a large variety. Â So if you are not in the mood for a beer, this is not the place for you. Â But if you do want a nice little cozy spot....hit it up!
