I was honestly surprised by this place. I went to a Pentatonix concert at the Riviera last Saturday and we were a bit early, so we went here. They serve breakfast all day and it was great. Don't be turned off by the dated decor, the food was still good. We got dinner (breakfast for dinner, really) for $20 including tip. That's probably the cheapest dinner ever in the city. And it was very quick. We ordered and it was probably out within 5 to 10 minutes. Good service and good food.

Great place to grab a cheap bite to eat. I usually stick to breakfast food, but I've gone with others that have gotten sandwiches and even dinner items and have been satisfied. Nice, attentive staff. The food isn't gourmet, but what do you expect for a dive diner? However, their coffee is probably the best I've ever had (shocking, I know).

Definite neighborhood dive diner that I go to regularly for a good, no frills weekend breakfast. Cheap, large portions. Not a frilly brunch destination but a functional hole-in-the-wall breakfast at is best.

How have I not been here yet?!

Ventured in today in hopes of some tasty eggs and pancakes.  Not only were they tasty and fresh but they were cheap!

This place is exactly what I love about a breakfast spot.  Unpretentious.  Simple menu.  Great service (I was actually starting to get annoyed at how frequently they were refilling my coffee).  Hands down my new favorite, especially as it's a short walk from my apartment.   It has that perfect "diner in Uptown" feel.  I'll definitely be coming back here more often.

I just got done eating breakfast with my girlfriend and it was great! The bacon, sausage and eggs were delicious.

Great portions, great prices and super awesome service is what makes this an easy five stars!

I think we will make it a once a weekend routine. I'm very excited to go back.

I love this place. Clean, fast service, cheap, good quality and filling food. We like to sit in a window booth and watch the neighborhood go by. Makes me happy to live in Uptown.

It's hard for me to believe this is the same place I went to yesterday, with all of the 4 and 5 star reviews.  I feel generous giving it 2 stars.  I'm no food snob, but I hate bland food.  The service was very very slow too, and not all that friendly.

I ordered the corned beef hash with eggs.  The hash browns, which I thought the menu said had onions in them, were just very lightly cooked plain mushy potatoes.  No flavor, just grease.  The corned beef hash seemed like it was straight out of the can.  I will say they poached eggs were cooked well.  However, when we tried to sub out fruit for the toast, we were told "we don't do that".   My sister, who lives nearby and had been wanting to try the place, was similarly disappointed in her meal.

I have eaten at plenty of other diners in the city which have food with some flavor.   Maybe the non-breakfast food would have been better.  I'm not sure we will take a chance to find out though!

Coffee cups could be bigger. But the service keeps em filled with diner (read passable) coffee and they have all the basic b fast foods done right. Never have had any other meal here, so I can't comment on the burgers, but this is the authentic deal for local flavor.

    Greasy spoon!

What else can I say? this is your go to for standard breakfast fare. It's not the best, but definitely not the worst! It's good comfort food with a 70's-please-update-this-whole-in-the-wall, flare.

It is also cash only, which can be quite annoying; I do wish they were open late for the after hours crowd or just late night eats, but I know there's some riff raff around these parts so I can understand why they might not want to stay open late.

Every weekend they welcome my son and I at least once, if not twice.  He loves to sit in a booth and watch the red line roll by.  I'm a fan of their Western Omelet.  It's not a fluffy, organic veggie and goat cheese monstrosity that cost $13.95.  It's a half-burnt, greasy, American cheese filled with ham and green pepper plate of win for around 8 bucks.  The toast is toasted, the coffee is always kept hot and they get the food out quick so my 2 year old doesn't have a conniption.

If you find yourself on the sidewalk in front of Golden House early on the weekend (and trust me, you will).  Stop in if you're hungry.

Exactly what I need out of my diner. Cheap eats, timeless decor and surly (yet friendly) service.

It is no Ann Sather's... but this place brings me back to my rural midwest upbringing (in Wisconsin)... to a time when my family and I would pick up the grandparents, scootch into red vinyl booths and catch up on our week. I hate smoking in restaurants but kind of wish they would allow it in here HAHA! Can't go wrong with the 2-2-2-2, that is two pancakes, two eggs, two sausages and two pieces of bacon for $5.95!

As a "regular," I want to applaud the Golden House staff for their consistently- welcoming attitude and comfy ambience. The food is cheaply-priced, with the breakfast specials a great value. Homemade salsa is available on request for no extra charge. I always feel "at home" here, and often stop in during the week to avoid the weekend breakfast rush. Coffee refills are cheerfully offered, and I feel I can relax with a book at one of the booths at the window without being rushed. More than any local place, this down-to-earth establishment attracts a cross-section of the community, with children very much in evidence.

This place isn't much to look at, their food is definitely diner food, and it was just what the doctor ordered after a night of heaving drinking (and karaoke-ing).

The coffee is just... bad... by the way. I feel like I should mention that. It goes beyond diner coffee - its almost double watered down some how. That being said, the food is huge portions for cheap. Its nice and greasy.  Its a dive diner and I'd certainly go back. Never for a nice place to sit down and eat breakfast, but always after a long night of too much fun.

This is THE place to go for breakfast in Uptown. You cannot beat their prices for the amount of food you're getting

Don't expect anything fancy. This is the perfect dive/diner to go to when you're struggling to wake up after that long night out.

They keep the coffee flowing and they have VERY fast service.

    I love this place. Period.

I didn't read all the glowing Yelp reviews before a friend brought me here for breakfast.  It was probably a good thing because, as it turns out, I was really disappointed.  Sure I can be a foodie, but I do love diners and dives.  I hoped this would make the list of my faves.  Unfortunately, it didn't even come close.

The service was no-frills, nice but not overly friendly.  The place was clean - dated interior - but it felt safe to dine there.  The menu had your typical diner fare - nothing fancy.

To keep things simple, I ordered the ham, eggs (over medium), and hashbrowns entree.  The eggs were fine - done the way I like them - but the rest of the plate was not very palatable.  After a couple of bites of the ham and the hashbrowns, I started playing with my food.  (FYI, that's the sign that I don't really like something.)

The ham was dry and bland, the hashbrowns were dry and probably overcooked.  I thought a little ketchup on my potatoes would help, but alas, to no avail.  Needless to say, I left hungry.

The likelihood of me returning to this place is slim to none...  I don't know this neighborhood very well, but I will make sure I know what my other breakfast options are next time I'm in the area.

Yep...I really enjoy this low key diner.  While I always seemed to avoid it in the past for no general reason, I just didn't feel like haulin all the way down to Hamburger King so we decided to give it a try.

Needless to say we were not disappointed and have been back several times.  The staff has always been friendly and seem related in some kind of way...or maybe they have all worked here long enough that is just seems that way.  Always quick to refill coffee and water and to do a quick check in.

Being a creature of habit I can only comment on the cornbeef hash and eggs and they do not disappoint.  Most of the breakfast options come with either toast or pancakes and hash browns.  Small side note...these are hash brown as in the shredded kind that get thrown on the grill with butter till they are crisp.  These are not the ubiquitous "breakfast potatoes" that every other place want to pass off.

They do have a large menu of lunch and dinner options as well but I have not consumed any of those.

A diamond in the rough. And by rough I mean the corner of Lawrence & Broadway. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but step inside and you'll find a spotless diner that is both delicious and a great value.

I never would have gone if it weren't for all the review from yelpers - and i was pleased. this place wont be winning any james beard awards in the near future, but for a good old-fashion traditional breakfast of eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, and toast, you can go wrong. The food is good and the prices are cheap.

As everyone mentions, it is CASH ONLY. I understand they are trying to keep costs down, but who travels with cash these days? Trust me, if you want a basic, hearty breakfast in a clean establishment with good service, save a few singles from the night before and go eat here!

This is a really great low-key place to grab breakfast.  Their silver dollar pancakes cure my hangovers like nothing else.  I like their pancakes so much, that's all I've ever ordered (although I did get mine topped with strawberries once, but I've since decided I prefer them plain).

The service is quick and attentive (but it never approaches too-attentive-it's-annoying).

It's cash only, but their prices are so low that I can usually find what I need between the couch cushions. OH, did i mention that Vince Vaughn eats here?  So if it's good enough for a movie star....

This morning/afternoon, after months (years?) of passing by this place and thinking that it looked like a groovy little joint to grab a cup-o-mud and some eggs, my 'fella and I finally made a plan to go in.  I was immediately charmed by the place, being a fan of anything that looks like its stuck in time (as long as that time isn't the early 90's).  I also liked that I didn't have to say that I wanted a booth, being that every seat in the house is a booth -- a sparkly, red vinyl booth, of course.

I ordered the 2-2-2-2, and it was exactly what I wanted it to be.  Nothing over-the-top, and definitely not ground-breaking cuisine, but a solid breakfast, everything cooked the way it should be and looking pretty on my plate.  A hot mug of coffee, and an efficient waiter that doesn't bug us every five minutes.  Yeah, this is my kind of place.

Pretty decent stuff for a local diner / greasy spoon. Over-easy eggs were prepared spot-on, and bacon was crispy. The biscuits were a bit unusual as they seemed more like mini-biscuits, but still tasty.

Be warned, they don't take credit cards, cash only.

If you go there on a weekend during peak breakfast hours, don't expect to have any conversation over your meal.  It is crowded and SO LOUD.

"WHAT?"  "I SAID IT'S LOUD IN HERE!"  "....WHAT?"  "....never mind."

    Food is cheap and tasty!

I'm a little on the fence about this place.  I love it because its so close to where I live and the prices are ridiculously low.  $2.99 for a burger, and that's not a special price.  It's definitely no frills dining, but the decor is half its charm.

I can do without the steady stream of "Uptown's finest" strolling through.  But while they can sometimes be loud, they seem to feel welcome.  I've never seen or heard the management ask someone to leave.  Its a family run business and they seem to recognize their regulars easily.

I do wish their hours during the week were longer - they close at 6:30 PM every night.  No credit cards either - cash only.  Still, the place is packed to SRO every weekend between 11AM-1PM.  Its a fun place to dine with friends, or just go alone now and then to work on a crossword puzzle (like me).

I kinda forgot about this place... Then came yesterday morning, I didn't want to cook, I didn't want to make coffee, and I didn't want to go far. Sooooooooo along came Golden House and it didn't disappoint.

    Good, check!
    Inexpensive, check!
    Fast, check!

This hole in the wall diner has won over my hangover mornings...

This was our hideout from the cold during the wait for a recent Black Keys show at the Riv - being next door, we could keep an eye on people waiting in line, and make sure that we were in front. As we're all morons, and are unwilling to see the Keys unless we're on the railing. Besides - Carmela's was closed on New Year's Day.

Some people got omelets, which looked good, served with a huge pile of hash browns. I kind of wish that was what I had, even though I'm really not much of an egg guy. I ended up with pancakes with cherries on them, trying to find something that wasn't going to be greasy or upset my stomach, since I knew I would be standing in line for a while. They were...just OK. The cherries were real, but obviously your generic canned cherry sauce. Nothing exceptional. Pancakes were unremarkable. A friend had pancakes with chocolate chips, and the chips were milk chocolate, not semi-sweet...kind of unusual.

All in all, I wish I had gone elsewhere, but this was convenient, and it was dirt cheap. So it does have that in it's favor. I might use it again as a refuge during the wait for a show, but with the Starbucks across the street, the Borders kitty corner, and Carmela's close by, it's easy to find another spot where I can either stay warm/cool and find something to drink/eat.

Why had I not been here yet!  Another place that makes me feel like I'm back in my small, middle of nowhere town.  This time that feeling could not have come at a better time.  My friend and I came here on a Sunday morning ready to get our b'fast on.  We both got the corned beef hash and eggs and split a small stack of pancakes.  No disappointment here!  As my nieces would say, everything was yum.  I haven't been here for lunch or dinner, but after seeing that you can get a burger and fries for under $5, returning is a must.
    A Golden experience for sure.

Gotta love this place... standard dive breakfast joint, ridiculously cheap prices, decent food, good service.

I live really close, so when it's my day off and I'm feeling like eggs and bacon, this is the place to go.  It may not be the best quality breakfast in the city, but it is not bad either, and the prices are really, really low.  I generally get the combo breakfast- 4 bacon, 2 eggs, hashbrowns, and toast, for 6 bucks.  Can't beat that!

I will say, the coffee is pretty bad, but at least they keep your cup full.  The service is always good, the servers are really nice, and the food comes out fast.  Golden House gets the job done!

I have nothing bad to say about this place.  Very inexpensive, great location, great service, and decent food.

Don't let the exterior and the interior fool you.  It may be a bit outdated but a good location for a bite to eat.

Usually the breakfast is all that I get (usually on a Saturday morning).  From what I have had, all good.  I would recommend trying it once.

I'm giving the Golden House Restaurant five stars because it's a three-star place.  Stay with me here.  It's a diner with broken down seats, leggy houseplants in the windows, and ancient wood paneling.  Tarantino would probably use it as a set if he knew it existed, you know what I'm saying?

The food is solid diner food -- nothing fancy, no updated twists or fusion concepts.  Just sausage, eggs, and pancakes, y'all.  Your choice of toast.  Grated hash browns.  Little plastic things of jelly.  Thin, hot coffee that gets refilled constantly.  There is also an extensive lunch menu with exactly what you'd expect on it -- club sandwiches and pork chops (probably -- not for sure on that).

It is the very embodiment of everything a three-star diner should be -- reliable comfort breakfast food at pretty darn low prices.  I will back up all the other reviews here that say it's great for a hangover, because there's no pretentious brunch scene or obnoxious music.  Just you, your plate of bacon and french toast, and your half-remembered regrets from last night.

I love that there are still diners like this in the city, darn few left but this one hits the spot. Since Uptown Snack Shop closed a couple years ago, this has become my regular go-to for grease and caffeine in the neighborhood.
The food is heavy, filling and probably not so great for your health, but the price is right. And it helps the staff there are really friendly! Last time I went here I had a mushroom and cheese omelet, the cheese was American, but I guess it was exactly what I needed - they give you a choice of hash browns, toast or pancakes, even with the Mexican breakfast specials.

...One of these four stars being for the fact that this place is within walking distance of my apartment.  My boyfriend and I were hungover the particular morning we went, however, so we said "Ah f*ck it, lets drive."  So we get there (parking wasn't as much of a headache around here as it is in the rest of Uptown) and we get to seat ourselves right away.

They turn over tables quick, but at the same time don't make you feel rushed when you are actually one of the patrons sitting in there eating breakfast.  They sure don't make small talk though.  They are attentive but not trying to sugarcoat things for extra tips .... and I LIKE that.  They seem to have a good grasp on the concept that, in providing good, quick service, that alone will have a positive effect on their gratuity :)

The place is pretty simple -- no fancy decor or music playing, nothing fancy schamcy menu-wise, just some good down home breakfast food.. pancakes, eggs, bacon, juice, coffee... all the normal stuff and I had no complaints about any of it.  I had three cups of the coffee, actually.. yes, I  liked their coffee, unlike many people who have reviewed this place before me.  Guess I hit 'em on a good day!

If you want a simple place to get some good, filling breakfast served hot and fast with no frills or BS.. look no further than Uptown's Golden House next to the Riv! :)

This is a great place in my hood for multiple reasons.  And uptown has its style and class just like every other hood in town, so this place can be for everyone so long as you have realistic expectations.

This is a diner in all aspects.  Unlimited coffee, simple yet extensive menu with food that is dirty cheap price wise.  So cheap in fact you could probably eat breakfast here everyday (living in the neighborhood would help with testing such a theory of course) and pay only $5 or $10 per week.  But that isn't good for the waist line now is it?!?!?!?!  But as a brunch option this would be alcohol free and no BYOB.

An entire glass front makes for a bright space.  Parking is a real pain, so you may be looking a bit before finding one......but the Red Line (Lawrenence Stop) is just a half a block away.

Classy booths, great old school decor gives it a truly vintage feeling.

This is a cash only establishment....which is still weird to me coming from the South as EVERYONE has credit/debit card capability down there?  Oh well, still, just mosey on up here and try it out!

Here is what Golden House has going for it: excellent throw-back to the 1970s greasy spoon decor; extremely low prices; and quick and helpful service. It's a fun place to hang out with friends or family on a Saturday morning as the traffic on Broadway whirs past. I have eaten here many times and will continue to do so.

With a couple minor improvements they could really go from average to something great. The food is nothing special, made with cheaper ingredients and it it shows. It would be nice to get a real glass of orange juice or even simply some better-tasting coffee. A little flourish here and there could really make this place a destination.

I saw a bad review about the coffee and about the soda..WTF? There is a Starbucks right across the street if you want great coffee, and soda??? Come on for real the size was to small??? Ever been to Europe? Why do you think we have a weight problem here in America?

I've been wanting to try this place for years, and now I'm hooked thanks to their breakfast combos. But let me warn you, like many other locations in Uptown, this place is not for everyone.

There was a time before corporate franchises and foo-foo latte shops when the local diner took care of all your needs. Coffee of questionable quality  and consistency, check. Unhealthy amounts of grease served with eggs, sausage, syrup, and CONTAINERS of REAL SUGAR for previously mentioned coffee- check. Decently priced entrees that entice you to spend money on something you can probably get cheaper/better elsewhere- check. And finally, three words- Red Vinyl Seating. Although I know of some Micky-D's that still have their '70's vintage vinyl seating, you probably won't have it with wood accented walls, mirrors, and an interior that really does feel like you've stepped back in time.

It is a comfortable, inviting feeling, where even though you sit quite close to the neighboring booth with no partitions, you and your companions can have a decent conversation without engaging in a shouting competition.

The menu consists of your general diner fare. The back page has all your breakfast combination specials. You will sit there for several minutes trying to decipher all possible combinations, but if you want a good starter, try the 2-2-2 pancake-egg-bacon special. The french toast is moist, without over-doing it. The pancakes are on the thick side, two are enough for me.The omelettes are decently sized and aren't too moist or too dry. They go well with ketchup and hot sauce. If given a choice, avoid the hashbrowns, as they are dry and tasteless. As for the coffee? Yes it's weak, but I'm here for the food. There are TWO Starbucks within 5 minutes of this place if you really need your coffee.

One of these days I will try something other than breakfast. With the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, I fear this place may be replaced with a foo-foo cafe. Until that time, a toast to the weak coffee.

Pros: Vintage diner interior, mind boggling combination of breakfast options, decently sized menu. Red Vinyl Seats.

Cons: Cash only, limited hours, tight seating.

To sum it up: I wish there were more places like this. Makes me want to open up a diner to preserve the atmosphere- if I do, I promise to serve better coffee.

It is what it is, which is a cheap, old fashioned diner. This aint Lincoln Park, it is Uptown. The decor looks like they did it in 1972 and liked the look so it never changed.

The food was OK. Not great, not horrible. It is cheap. It filled me up. Breakfast for two of us was like $15 with a 20% tip.  So, if you want cheap breakfast food without any flash, this is a fine place. If you want better food and a nicer surroundings, go to The Bagel in Lakeview..

..It is what it  is... Oh yea, they have parking behind the restaurant off the alley too.. that is a plus!

You don't go here for the food. You go here for the atmosphere and experience on a weekend breakfast/brunch. It's kind of diner-y but that's its charm.

The staff is super nice and friendly. The food is merely so-so but good enough that you can trust them to do it right. The coffee is not so good but  with enough half/half and sugar you'll soon forget that.

You go here to relax. You go here when you're hung over. You go here when you don't want to make breakfast for yourself. It's perfect for that kind of thing....

On first glance, you'll think this place is a dump. Siddown and have a meal and you will change your mind.  Sure there's lots of tuberculosis coughing around from the denizens of the nearby transient hotel.  Sure the place looks like it hasn't been renovated since 1965. So did the Hollywood a few years back.  The food (breakfasts anyhow) are outstanding, and you get a ton of it for your buck. No BS, service is prompt, they are all about being on top of coffee refills. And lemme tell ya, they do bacon and corned beef hash right.  I'm a lifer even though I moved out of Uptown awhile back.  You won't find pretentious breakfast food here, ya want that there's lots of places to get it.  This place is all business.  Makes me think of Tom Waits' "Knigthawks at the Diner".

What's also great is that much (if not all) the staff are uptown locals and very friendly.  It was weird living next door to one of the waitresses.  She's gotta know that she's sitting on a gold mine with that house of hers.

This place is one of the comfiest places in the neighborhood.  When eating there, it feels like you're truly in the neighborhood - everyone from yuppies to cops to homeless people are eating there, and all enjoying its low prices and warm atmosphere.

They raised their prices about 6 months ago, but are still among the cheapest breakfasts in town - you can easily walk out of there with a breakfast that costs less than $5.

    Cash only, by the way!
