A group of friends and I, visited this hookah bar late on July 3, 2015. It was busy, but that's to be expected for a late night hookah bar. As my party stepped into the building, we were immediately approached by "Bones", an employee at this hookah bar. The first thing that Bones says to me is "what hookah do you want? "I was expecting a more professional greeting but that's fine. I responded by saying "do you have seating available" (because the place was full) Bone replies back by saying: "buy a hookah first and I will show you where too sit" I held my cool and said "we are still looking for which hookah flavor to purchase"...This well-educated person's response was "just leave. Get out if you're not buying". I gratefully said "okay" and walked over to the hookah bar next door which was great. I wish the owner "Abdi" (not sure if I spelt that correct) was there because he would have slapped the tattoos off bones for treating a customer like this. I am never going back and I've told my employees not to ever spend any money at this establishment.
Gypsy is almost a total disaster.
The atmosphere is the opposite of what you'd expect from a place to sit down with friends and relax with a hookah. The entirety of my experiences there have been filled with loud high school kids, drunks, and general unpleasant people. The atmosphere feels kind of grimy, (kind of being an understatement), and the whole place could use a wash or a thorough cleaning.
While the selection of flavors and prices are pretty average, the wait time for hookahs is far too long, and the employees felt anything but hospitable. I once walked in to meet my friends, and was forced to call them from outside the bar in order for them to come collect me, as the employee wouldn't let me into the bar without proof I was with someone. I have never experienced this anywhere else, and I have been to many hookah bars.
Long story short, there are better hookah bars in the area, one only a few hundred feet away. If you're looking for a memorable experience at a hookah bar, unless you want it to be a bad memory, go elsewhere. I highly suggest Bohemian Hookah Cafe on Ludlow.
I've been here twice now, and I'm not quite sure why I went back the second time.
My first visit wasn't too bad, a couple friends and I ordered strawberry flavor and smoked it in the front room.
The second time we ordered coconut and pineapple (They let you mix up to 3 or 4 flavors which I thought was cool) We considered sitting in one of the back rooms but they were all either full, too dark or too grimey. The couches/seats were gross looking. I also made the mistake of going to the ladies room- which was also unkempt and covered in extremely vulgar graffiti. However, I could have overlooked all of this.
We ordered our hookah and it took well over 15-20 minutes to get it to us. The place wasn't too busy looking and we actually saw several people come in after us and get theirs first. I'm sorry but for $11 dollars it shouldn't take them that long to pack a bowl.
I think next time I'm in the mood for some hookah, I'll try the cafe literally right down the street.
I've been going to this Hookah bar for years, ever since it opened actually. It can (or use to be) a pretty chill place to go try some hookah with a few friends. Though, it seems like the last few times I've gone its gotten slightly worse.
Theres a ton of high school kids that show up now, which is a big downer since this place is right next to a college campus and you feel out of place. The selection is not bad on the hookah tobacco flavors and it can last some time (45 mins to an hour between 4-5 people). But last time in, because our party had more than 4 people (there was 5 of us), we were told we HAD to buy another hookah by the girl working there. If it wasn't for the fact that we had friends already there with a hookah, I would have suggested leaving.
The place has been slowly declining, but the first couple years I went there it was good. So I'd give them a pass and try going again.
If you are looking to try some hookah with a few friends, chill out and talk, give it a shot. It's worth trying.
