The Bartender "Dean" is a thief. He stole my money at the bar and over charged me and he is rumored to do the same to other patrons at Horseshoe Cafe. Dean is also a racist.
Don't take the 3 stars as bad. This is a dive bar that delivers on exactly what it should. Cold beer, good bar food.
We had the chili to start, with burgers and the grilled cheese. The chili was tasty fully loaded and the bacon/cheese burger with horseradish was decent as well. The grilled cheese with bacon and Russian dressing was different, but still good.
Overall the service was good, with lots of regulars drinking at the bar early on a Saturday night. I will be back.
Let's be up front about what to expect. Â This is a pure dive bar with mediocre food, the same booze as anywhere else, an average juke box and the worst pool table on the planet. Â It is clean, dark, and comfortable. Â It's got a great location and when Dean is behind the bar you can get a drink the instant your glass gets low. Â The popcorn is dry and salty (like movie theater corn) and the bathroom looks like hell. Â This place has more character than almost any place in Fairfield County that I've ever been to. Â Great to lose yourself here on a snow day or some night after work. Â Sports always on the TV and you can always find some interesting character to chat with (or be left alone if you prefer). Â Bring a group here and just relax and have fun! Â Seriously, they don't make places like this anymore! Â don't miss this one!
Note: Â Sometimes the kitchen isn't open. Â When that is the case they let you bring in Pizza from down the street. Â You'll have a great time here!
While on business travel to Southport, I stopped in for lunch to find I was the only one in the Restaurant. Â I couldn't understand why? Â I had the Shoe grilled cheese sandwich and it might just be one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. Â It was not the kind mom made on a cold winter day. Â One of the best sandwiches I ever had. Â After reading the comments I prob would not go here at night but for a sit down restaurant during the day - I'm in!!
Review Source:Talk about a DIVE. Â Right in the middle of Southport too!
I love that this place holds true to it's traditions, but it definitely attracts the dive crowd. Â Bikers and bigots alike. Â
HOWEVER, they do have a solid booze selection and well...
KARAOKE on Tuesday nights. Â Which kicks ass. Â
They've got pool, they've got a jukebox, they've got food, they've got huge beer bong shooters...
If you're looking for a hole-in-the-wall-to-get-hammered at, the Horseshoe is it.
We still go there every Tuesday night for motorcycle night, even when it's not riding season. THe Horse Shoe is a true neighbourhood watering hole - something that's hard to find these days. Super friendly staff, delightfully disorganized kitchen sometimes, but they get it down. Go in there once, and they'll know your name and drink preference next time you're there. In the warm weather, it's not unusual to see 40 to 50 motorcycles, many beautiful vintage European bikes - BMW, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Triumph, as well as a Harley here and there. Very mixed crowd, everyone has a fun time. Great place, a real gem that's hard to find.
Review Source:The Horseshoe has the Southport bar market covered so it doesn't have to try hard but it delivers. Â It's a tale of two separate scenes. Â During the day you'll find well-heeled ladies enjoying a cheeseburger. Â At night it's a busy bar scene with a lively pool table and sports fan crowd. Â Regulars get preferred service from the familiar staff behind the bar.
