Been three times in the last 10 months.

First time (weeknight), as I walked into the bar area (which was dimly lit at the time), my forehead contacted the pointy ear of the brass horse on the immediate right. Not a great start but was otherwise okay. Just had drinks. Staff not very helpful in stopping the bleeding though and seemed generally indifferent about the whole thing.

Second time (weekend), began with door flying open and glass breaking around us as a recent ex-employee (stlll wearing insignia shirt) expressed frustration at his firing by crushing main door while we were trying to enter. Most of staff thought it was kind of funny b/c there was apparently a wage issue by the employee and they informed us that managment had him arrested for the vandalism (?) that happened directly in front of us. Otherwise, our little birthday celebration had good service, food and drinks. No apology by management (or anyone) for our beginning experience.

Third time (weeknight), there were events going on the bar area and the place was woefully understaffed (only two bartenders -- but six hostesses walking around -- go figure). Had a horrible time getting any service and wasn't helped by the fact that the bartenders kept taking people out of order. In fact, she started to take the order of the guy next to me and he insisted that I should be first b/c I had been waiting so much longer but she ignored that plea.. On top of that, wouldn't answer any questions. Then gave someone back a different person's credit card and had to fix that problem before I eventually received the wrong order. Total wait time standing at the bar was a legimitate 25 minutes. After all that, I said my goodbyes and went elsewhere.

I can't think of any reason to go back there given the price point. It shouldn't be a game of "whether we get good service or not" when you show up. There are just so many better options.

Almost feel like taking off another point b/c the brass ear still sticks out at head height after 10 months (and probably longer). Raise it a few more inches off the floor, put something in front of it to prevent injury, or relocate it. Not rocket science.

I've been here on three occasions and the first two occasions were pretty good, the last time suffered from service issues and worse... a steak that was grisly and rubbery lukewarm lobster tail that should have been sent back. Not sure if it was an off night but... restaurants at this price point shouldn't EVER have an off night. Love the room, loved the first two experiences but might give Z's or Eddie Merlot's a shot next time in Louisville as I have a feeling Ruby's is coasting on reputation at this point.

Almost everything about our experience was very good. The service was great and the staff very helpful in answering our questions. The decor was interesting (some may say over the top) and fun. the drinks were generous and the wine prices okay. The sides were good, and the bread was delicious and hot from the oven. The steak was a big disappointment, especially at the premium price they charged - it wasn't very hot when served and full of gristle and unnecessary fat. The waiter boasted it might be the best steak I ever had - it wasn't even the best steak I had that week.

Jeff Ruby's relates to cold food. I have eaten at Jeff Ruby's five or six time over the last few months and three out of the last five visits the steaks are cold. Basically the food is sitting under the hot plate for way to long. This week I had to call the manager to send all the food back for reheating. I don't expect this from Jeff Ruby's. The manager didn't seem to take my complaint very seriously. He says that I have to request hot food. Are you kidding me!! Cold food relates to a one star rating in my book. When the steaks at Jeff Ruby's are hot they are amazing and to die for. The fries, Mac and Cheese are incredible. Jeff Ruby's has an extensive wine list which is overpriced and offers no corking change. Since I am a regular I would highly recommend making a reservation. Opentable seems to work the best.

It was a nice atmosphere when we walked in with vibrant and colorful decor.

I shared the Bone-In Filet Mignon, a side of Truffled Creamed Corn and Lobster Mashed Potatoes.

YUMMMMM. Dinner was pretty amazing as the meat was so tender and juicy. The creamed corn was truffle-tastic and highly addicting. And the lobster mash was so creamy and rich. They did not skimp in the portions, as all the portions were plentiful. This is a big change to some steak houses I've been to where their "a la carte'" sides usually can't satisfy two people.

Overall thoughts: Definitely a great steakhouse. Prices were very reasonable and I didn't feel ripped off. The setting was also more casual then I expected which is a good thing when you just want to enjoy your meal without fancy pants judgment.

Food was wonderful. The bar area, where we ate, was a little loud. However, the band was wonderful, and the delicious food made up for the noise level.a definite must for anyone in the Louisville area.

We had a great time celebrating a birthday. The food and service was amazing. Near the end of the meal, the staff began to rush us and the manager even came over and asked us to leave to accommodate the next reservation. If I am spending that much on a meal, my party will stay as long as we like. I was extremely put off by this and it pretty much ruined our experience. We will not return.

This place is awesome! Food was out of this world good. Place was packed with people and they had music playing behind the bar. Was a great vibe! Would go back in a heart beat.

I do not think the evening could have been any better. Great food, wine, company, and service. My boyfriend and I went on a double date to Jeff Ruby's a few nights ago and went all out. I felt like I was walking into a glitzy showroom in Vegas while a band was playing behind the bar. I love when I go to a restaurant and the bread is even good to start. It came with a mushroom truffle butter that I loved so much I even asked our waiter to box the extra for me. We started with cocktails, I had a Old Fashion then switched to wine. We started out with the duck ravioli appetizer, I practically licked the plate clean. The mushroom sauce it is served with is to die for. I then had the Crab soup which had so much crab in it I was in love. I also liked the smokiness in the soup from the bacon. We all had steak for dinner. I had the strip with truffle butter, while my boyfriend had the bone-in strip with chili rub. Both were amazing in my opinion and would recommend either one. Then for sides for the table we had creamed spinach, loaded mashed potatoes, and 6 cheese macaroni and cheese. I think I actually liked the creamed spinach the best, I loved the nutmeg in it. We finished our meal off with creme brulee, and a chocolate peanut butter cake that was so decadent and rich I could only have one bite by the time we got to dessert. We have two dogs at home and whenever we are at a steakhouse we ask if the kitchen has some bones for our dogs. Usually we get some but our waiter was so nice he went above and beyond by bringing us 4 nice bones to bring home to our babies :) They were very happy when we got home. This is a great place to go for a special occasion or to celebrate.

There is dinner at a steakhouse, and then a night out at Jeff Ruby's. Louisville has a plethora of great places to enjoy a good ribeye, but if you want a little something called pizzaz, Jeff Ruby's is your place.

The first thing that caught my attention here is the ambience. It's like being inside a jukebox for grownups, complete with a buzzing bar and the tinkle of laughter spiked with your favorite libations. At most restaurants I typically only go to a bar while waiting for a table, but this is a place where I could see myself making a night out only of hanging out at the watering hole.

I was lucky enough to attend a private event here, so I got to eat in one of the private dining rooms. It gets noisy here if you're out in the main dining room, but it just adds to the festive atmosphere of the restaurant.

You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Appetizers for our group were crab cakes (crispy exterior with flaky crab interior), crab corn truffles (sweet and fluffy), duck ravioli (I devoured this, along with the sauteed mushrooms it was served with) and a Jeff Ruby roll (3/5 stars, just because I like surf and turf, but not together in a sushi roll). After appetizers, I was stuffed. But that was just the beginning.

My entree was a Queen Filet Mignon. Our server explained about the drying method the restaurant uses to help ensure a rich steakhouse flavor on every cut they serve. I love steak, and the one I got did not disappoint. It's tough to choose a favorite steakhouse in Louisville based solely on flavor since they're all so good, but this place is difficult to beat.

I turned down dessert - and do as I say, not as I do on this one. There is a molten chocolate cake that I had a bite of and wished I had ordered one for myself. Get this if you go to the restaurant, even if you're not a chocolate fan (I'm not and I loved this thing).

It's not just dinner - it's a night out at Jeff Ruby's. Treat yourself sometime to discover what that difference is!

In my opinion Jeff Ruby's is the best fine dining Steakhouse in the Louisville area. The steaks are the specialty here and they offer a great bone-in-filet. However, to save some money I always select the regular filet as I feel it tastes just as good. I have eaten here over 10 times and everything I have had has been very good. The service is second to none and the ambiance is very bright and energizing. It is great place to go with friends, to take your significant other, and offers a beautiful bar with a piano player for some casual drinks. Best in town!

This was a classy/refined establishment. I had gone there on a business trip and absolutely wished that I could take it back home with me. The menu is amazing (I had the veal chop) and the table shared the side dishes since there were so many that we wanted to try (the caramelized root vegetables were my favourite). Then we ended the night with a sampling of rich and creamy desserts. If you have the means, since it is a bit pricey, then try this at least once.

It was my husband's birthday, and I was eager to find him something tasty in the Louisville area. Since we've just moved here I was on the search for steak! I kept checking http://opentable.com for reservations and finally got one. We've been to the others like Morton's and Ruth Chris so we were hoping for a real treat. When we arrived the decor is amazing and has such a nice vibe and feel it reminds me of a 1940's scene. Gotta adore the ruby décor, hints the name. We first started off with a bottle of wine and let me say that there wine list is forever long! Lots of choices to pick from, I'm sure you will enjoy if you're a wino like us. We decided to go all out, we started with the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake and OMG can we say YUM! I had the Iceberg Lettuce Wedge salad with bleu cheese dressing and hubby had the Freddie salad with the buttermilk ranch. I mean salad is salad but that bleu cheese dressing was delicious and let me just say if you love bacon then the Freddie salad is for you, my husband just absolute loved it. Upon ordering for dinner we both had Filet Mignons and our sides to share we ordered the Jumbo Baked Potato and Macaroni & Cheese which has 6 Imported Cheeses. Can we say WOW?! Everything was amazing and we've been back several times. Since we've been back, we also tried the Herb Grilled Oysters and it has BACON! I've noticed Kentucky just seems to love bacon out here. Nice place for a fancy night out. :-)

Nothing says class like this location.

Just finished hosting my 4th annual Jeff Ruby's Dinner for my clients. Had 60 this year!

Yes, it does take a few months to book along with a deposit but you cannot go wrong. Aleady have it booked for our 5th annual.

As always, the private room with a menu begninning of choice of salad, then fish, steak, or chicken, accompanied with potato, asparagus, and finished off with desert of choice.

I have yet in 4 years hosting parties to have anything sent back nor have I had nothing by rave reviews by my clients.

Mike, John, and John are the perfect waiters. These young fellows are not your fly by night team, they are "professional" waiters that have chosen this as their career path. Top notch.

Costs? Ruby's is NOT cheap so be prepared to spend $$$$ on the rating scale.

If you are just dining and bringing your wonderful other to a romantic dinner do yourself a favor. Just like the group, make sure you provide ample reservation time. Do it in person. Reserve a wall booth, again way in advance, you will have a great time.

When in the 4th Street Live and Main area of Louisville this is where I go, well here and Eddie's. This area is touristy, and convention folk loaded so all items are rather high. Louisville does have an old town with great restaurants too, but here it's Ruby's.

The food is good, but certainly not impressive. The steaks are fatty and chewy with the occasional tough gristle. I always feel like I'm at an overpriced, tacky, and trendy chain restaurant when I come here.
The bar area is the only aspect of this place that is worth visiting. They have good drinks and the music is pretty good.
The best steaks I've had in Louisville came from Jack Fry's and Gary's on Spring.

Pretty much everything said about this place is in Yelp World is dead on. The Steak (Barrel Cut Fillet, Medium Rare, Pittsburgh Style) was wonderful, and the two bourbons the bartender selected for me we were the perfect accompaniment. The Live Piano Man really completed the experience, as he constantly reached out to patrons at the bar for requests. Foo Fighters Everlong, solo Piano Acoustic... Yup. Reasonably priced by DC standards with pleasant staff, I would return should I ever find myself in Louisville again.

After hearing a lot from the local louisville folks, I decided to check out this place.
First Impression: Great ambeiance and hot waitresses.
Service: Decent as I was sitting at the bar. I don't expect great service there.
Food: I had a Dry aged cowboy steak. Good flavor, nicely cooked but had too much fat. Found some alien thing in my side of mushrooms and onions. When i brought this to their notice, the manager spoke to me and said sorry and was willing to buy me drinks. The wierd part was I was trying to maintain a low profile about this but the bartender took the dish in her hand and was calling the manager. Soon, it was apparent that there was something wrong with my food and people sitting next to me started asking me about it. What a douche !
There was a piano player that night and he was pretty good, played some nice tunes.
Overall OK experience, just feel the place is a little pricey. But I guess since it has a huge reputation in Lousiville area, People don't mind paying that much.

all in all, one of the best meals i've had in a long time.started with the steak tar-tar that had a raw quail egg in the center! amazing. I had the $52 ny strip, worth every penny. the lobster potatoes are not to be missed and the asparagus simply could not have been better. I'm not a steak house guy and yet i would return here.

a couple reasons i didn't give five stars. the place is a little pretentious. o.k., a lot pretentious, which i'm not a fan of. the other negative was that jeff ruby himself was showing some dude around and they stood directly in front of our table as he descibed the photo's hanging above us. he made no aknowledgement of our presence and was a litttle too close for comfort. my wife and i found this to be incredibly rude, especially from the owner.

all in all, expensive food but worth every dime.

Love this place! This is not your typical steakhouse. The decor reminds me of a 40-50s piano bar. We ordered a bunch of appetizers which were amazing and shared a steak. The steak was well seasoned. I for one LOVE a-1 sauce with my steak and I didnt even think twice about asking for it. The steak was cooked to perfection. If I ever come back to Louisville, I will def come back here.

Located inside or attached to the Galt Hotel in Downtown Louisville, this is the place to be seen during any Horse Event as it was this past weekend for the 28th Breeders Cup World Championships. Haven't eaten here before but never reviewed with a larger party, I thought it would be time to do this place justice.

PACKED every night the bar area 3 / 4 / 5 Deep with Piano music till about 8:30PM when a live band performs that is not too loud to bother the dining patrons yet the bar where you have Sit at your own risk seats available for persons who are interested in dining in that area without reservations. You can also eat at the bar but with everyone pushing for cocktails it's a difficult thing to do. I can assume on less crowded times it would be acceptable, but Breeders Cup Weekend Think again.

Styled after the New York City steakhouses of long ago, the menu features dry aged (on premises!) USDA prime beef, as well as some local favorites. Seafood lovers will be delighted with our fresh raw and sushi bar, as well as the seafood entrees. The dark, rich interior is as visually exciting to the eye as our food is to the palate.

Three of us for dinner tonight. The service is fast, brisk and very professional with the first group of gentlemen setting up water etc, followed by more gentlemen taking drink orders giving hints to the menu and providing a wine list. A very diverse offering from the wines with a markup that is considered acceptable based on location, style etc. After choosing our Vino for the evening we settle on our dining options as well.

3 Of us for dinner tonight And we start with a few items from the Seafood Bar Huge Tiger Shrimp, Alaskan King Crab legs, amble lemon, cocktail sauce and freshly shaved horse radish. All I can say is never have I ever had King Crab legs this sweet, fresh and tasty. The Shrimp were cold, crisp and also excellent and the cocktail sauce just spicy enough. Also an Iceberg Lettuce Wedge - with Maytag Bleu was just enough to offset seafood and the fresh bread with regular butter or truffle butter was simply outstanding.

3 Steaks selected tonight 1 Cowboy Steak - $51.00 In-House Dry Aged Bone-In Rib eye second steak was a New York Prime King Strip - $39.00 Dry Aged In-House on the Bone Third special was a Bone in Filet Mignon $55.00. Each steak is cooked with a considerable amount of CHARRED but the temperature inside was perfect on all 3 cuts. Its rich, flavorful, marble where expected and quite honestly tasting all 3 steaks each had its own distinct flavor and texture yet they were all some of the best cuts of meat I've ever eaten.

Two sides were shared by 3 a Lobster Mashed Potatoes - 9 Poached Lobster Tail, Lobster Butter & Tobiko & Macaroni & Cheese - 9 6 Imported Cheeses crusted over and baked. Both sides were simply Incredible. They were rich creamy and tasty beyond words.

After skipping deserts we walked out of here marveling at how good this place was with top to bottom excellent southern hospitality and service, incredible food, energy and atmosphere that was second to none and some of the prettiest gals around. This is a MUST VISIT for anyone in the Louisville area. A top 5 Experience for the Shellfish and Steak lover!!! Big Thumbs up!

Well, for starters I'm not a big fan of trendy steakhouses. But 2 other couples that we are friends with wanted to go here so I had no choice. The food was fine but as is par for these places it was overpriced. Service started off OK but as the evening went on he kind of disappeared. Half of our table had an empty drink for 15 minutes. And since we were a group of 6 an 18% gratuity was included in our bill.

As others have said it is WAY too loud. Nothing like spending $200 for 2 people and having to shout at the person 3 feet away. But actually what I disliked the most was the fact that the tables are crammed next to each other. I mean like tuck your elbows in crammed. And I'm a fairly skinny guy!

I gave 3 stars instead of 2 because the food is very good.

Traveled to Louisville for work from NYC and didn't expect much. I was taken out for a client dinner and expected to have reservations at something generic like morton's or benihana or ruth's chris, to my surprise, we had reservations at a small chain, jeff ruby's. I'll just cut to the chase and say this was the best steak I've ever had. I ordered the filet on the bone medium rare. I am not the MOST experienced person when it comes to steak (more of a fish person), but this steak was incredible.

I was not as impressed with the sides. We ordered the lobster mac and cheese, and classic creamed spinach - both had very little flavor and were extremely overpriced. Started with the tiger shrimp, crab legs and oyster dish and it was fairly good considering the ocean is a few hundred miles away. Check the place out - their steak is amazing, drinks are strong.

Go for the Red Meat, stay for the People Entertainment!
I attended this restaurant as a cure all to a bad week. Who doesn't get brought back to neutral after 24 oz of red meat and a bottle of red wine?! As the pictures from other users will show this place is not a romantic dinner for two, but a festive night at Liberachi's place. The restaurant is still very classy and had an amazing selection. I had the lobster mash potatoes, grill asparagus, and 24oz bone in rib-eye in a Cajun season and could barely finish. After splitting a bottle of red wine, I could not help but be in a better mood. This place is mostly booths that wrap around which I have always felt improve connecting with others at the table.
Just looking around I felt important to be with so many people that enjoyed fine dining.
Be on the look out though, after about 9 pm you start to see a lot of jeans, bottles of beer, and drunk high class dancing. The live music was a very nice end to the evening and very upbeat. Like I said this is not a quite dinner for two, but an expensive way to have a great time!

About 9 of us descended on this place. We had excellent service. The food was all top notch. The duck ravioli appetizer was simply outstanding. I had the barrel cut filet mignon - it was in the top 2 or 3 steaks i have ever had. To give you perspective i am a carnivore and order filet pretty much every chance i get. Perfectly cooked and almost melted like butter in your mouth. YUM! Most folks got some variation of steak so i cannot comment on the other options. Sides were delicious - green beans, lobster mashed potatoes, creamed spinach. I had a Beefsteak tomato salad with bleu cheese, red onions and just a touch of a balsamic dressing. It was superb. Overall the food was outstanding.

I can see how some others might think the place does have some attitude as it markets itself as a destination and top notch resaurant in Louisville. The party i was with was very relaxed and didnt get any attitude from our servers they even got in on some of our joking around.

First time here and was not impressed with the food. The decor I understand is pretty standard for Jeff Ruby's, but if you've never been there, its kind of like going to Vegas in the 80's The staff was great, but here's what I had.

Crab cakes appetizer - Below average, not a lot of crab in there.
Jumbo shrimp appetizer - Good cocktail sauce, but the shrimp were over cooked and tough
Seared scallops with brussel sprouts and cauliflower - Cooked perfectly, but the too salty with the sauce and vegetables

The better half and myself were in town visiting the son and wanted to grab a steak ,so we decided on Ruby's.
We both ordered the cowboy steaks and split an order of lobster mashed potatoes.

The mashed potatoes were awesome, the steaks were good but overpriced.
The staff seemed uppity ..... just a heads up, your in the 'ville not Beverly Hills.

We would probably return, but only to order the lobster potatoes.

This place is fun, lively and has a live band standing on the bar!!

It's an upbeat, upscale steak house. It's a bit loud so if your thinking soft, candle light romance, this is not it. If your looking for a lively and entertaining evening with your mate...then this is the place.

The food was great, as to be expected. Although the sushi was some of the best I've ever had. I'm from Boston and that's a hard thing for me to admit in the middle down here in Louisville! I thanked the chef!

The staff are super nice and nicely trained in the skillful art of 'how can I make you happy.' My compliments to the management!!! The missing star was for my slightly cold steak and the super salty mashed potatoes. The steak was worth it, very tender and the red wine sauce was outstanding.

If your conservative, up-tight and could be at risk for OCD with expectations of dining...this may not be the place for you! BUT life is too short to not pair fun with food.

GO-IMBIBE-ENJOY!

My parents came to town and asked around at their hotel for recommendations, and thus we went to Jeff Ruby's.

We started off with the Louisville roll (sushi at a steakhouse..!??), which was PHENOMENAL. I really wished there was more (only 5 pieces) and the crab soup, which had TONS of crab meat. Definitely worth the price. We then had the Freddie salad (romaine, bacon, tomato, ranch dressing) - EXCELLENT bacon - and the iceberg wedge.

For main course, I got the barrel-cut filet. It arrived just as ordered - a perfect medium rare. My mom ordered her petit filet medium, and it came out a little too rare for her tastes, but she enjoyed it nonetheless. Both of us took home leftovers - portions were delightfully large. Dad got the filet topped with crab meat and asparagus - no leftovers. Sides are all a la carte - we got the lobster mashed potatoes (quite possibly the best mashed I've ever had), jumbo baked potato, and creamed spinach. The only negative of the meal was the creamed spinach - a touch too much nutmeg.

For dessert we split the house-made jalapeno pineapple ice cream. It was a glorious sensory experience and certainly unique. A great end to the meal.

Disappointment is the way I describe Jeff Ruby's. I have had better service at a chain restaurant. The food is very over priced. For what we spent here for my wife's birthday, we could of spent at other restaurants in town and and entertained more people and had better service.
My wife ordered the steak, and it was good, but not worth the money we spent on it. Most other restaurants can cook a steak almost as well. I had fish and it was over cooked.
Louisville has lots of good restaurants, so try one of those.

The atmosphere was amazing. We had a group of 6 of us and we were taken care of to the 9's. (does that make sense?) The wine selection is fantastic. The menu is quite impressive and the service was excellent.

My only complaint was that, after stating I was a vegetarian and need to know the vegetarian options, my appetizer came out with bacon on it.

I was in Lou, KY for a business trip and since I was staying very near by at the Marriott in Downtown, I thought of making a trip to this so-called-best-in-class restaurant known for its dry aged steak and superb ambiance.

To start off honestly, I read the yelp reviewer and they all looked very promising but I always take reviews with a grain of salt because you never know who writes 'em...for all I know, it could be 10 profiles created by the same guy who runs the business.

I looked up opentable and tried to book a table but no seats available for weeks on end. I was like, OK? This has to be a sick feeling because no way a restaurant in Lou should be booked for weeks on end....oh wait, not many in Lou to begin with so I see why people would flock here to spend money.

I walked in wearing my normal business clothing (Slacks, Dress shirt sleeves rolled up, 5 o'clock shadow and oh ya...my loafers). I had to make my way up and go through a storm of chain smoker douche bag looking sales men and some fairly trashy people. I was amazed since the site mentioned ' business casual'. Anyways, the southern hostesses told me there are no seats available but please find a table at the bar. Fine, I did. Received my menu/request for drink. Nothing amazing when it comes to service.

I ordered the salad w/ goat cheese and caramalized walnuts. Honestly, not an amazing salad but I liked the creativity and presentation. But I was not too impressed with the diced up apples...too much = hides the taste of goat cheese, which by the way was very ill in quantity (less).

My entree was OK...not the best but OK. I was expecting a top notch service and even better food experience. Coming from Chicago, my expectations were hgih. Def not worth it if you are from out of town, I would recommend going to Jacky Fry's or something....

I have had the pleasure of visiting Jeff Ruby's twice in the last few months. I hope you see that I do not often write 5 star reviews. This is quite possibly my favorite restaurant in the country.

Jeff Ruby's slogan is "culinary entertainment." This is the best way I could describe the experience. If you come hungry, you will leave happy.

The decor is amazing. It looks as if the place is a swanky 20's joint with a modern twist. There is a beautiful aquarium that is immaculately kept.

The service and waitstaff are excellent, and I am a harsh critic. You will likely have no issues. Period.

The food is incredible. Steaks are amazing, along with the lobster mashed potatoes.

If i had to find negatives, I would say the wine list is a tad overpriced. I do not mind paying the high prices during such an outstanding occasion.

I do not need to say more. Go to Jeff Ruby's.

Truthfully, this place is not perfect, but the margin for error for this place still falls within superior ranges. Unless you are loaded, I imagine this is a place for special occasions. The bar is more laid back and can be enjoyed more frequently.

Service, decor, and atmosphere are fantastic. I've had one server twice, and he can be a little too enthusiastic, but otherwise knowledgeable, prompt, and accommodating. One time, a friend of mine ordered 1 cocktail shrimp instead of the shrimp cocktail (which are 3 huge tiger shrimp), and he complied without complaint.

The only apps I have tried are the crab cake, shrimp cocktail, and the charcoal grilled oysters. All are delicious and top notch, but my vote goes to the oysters, which are also covered in bacon, garlic, and romano cheese.

I've tried all the salads and the tomato soup, and they are all tasty and displayed well in their own way. The Freddie salad is my preference, with romaine lettuce, bacon, and buttermilk ranch dressing. The tomato soup even has little grilled cheese sandwich wedges for dipping.

Side dishes rock! The macdaddy and cheese, french beans, asparagus, creamed spinach with goat cheese, lobster mashed potatoes...all worth trying.

The steaks...can you go wrong here? They specialize in dry-aged steaks served on the bone. Well, the first time I came here I ordered the porterhouse med-rare. I was not too impressed with it. The steak near the bone was cooked to my liking, but a good portion of steak on the outside was cooked medium or even more. Next time, I went for the bone-off filet, and that was perfectly cooked with great texture and flavor. The cowboy steak, which is bone-on, was cooked perfectly when I ventured back to the bone-on side. The steaks have a seasoning that is blackened on to them, and some people (like my wife) may think it is a disservice to the steak. Definitely worth tasting for yourself!

In terms of seafood, I've only had the alaskan king crab, and huge cocktail shrimp, but they do have lots of fish dishes and daily menu items.

In conclusion, this is a top-notch place. If I am somehow dissatisfied with my food, I send it back since I paid so much for it. I actually get the feeling here that they appreciate the chance to get it right.

Whoa Ho! I'm not a fan of steakhouses especially in Chicago. Sorry but a $75 steak is just, well, stupid.

Jeff's top steak is $50 and WOW!!! I had the Cowboy and it was amazing. This bone in rib-eye was thick and tender with just the right amount of fat left on. I couldn't come close to finishing it (16 oz. with the bone) partly because Ruby's menu had too many awesome choices to pass up.

First the wine list - I was the only win-er so stopped at the first page where the wines by the glass are listed. Ruby's offer a glass - starting at $8 - a half decanter or a bottle. I ordered a Malbec half at $18 and had a nice pour, sufficient to last the evening. I'm not a terribly sophisticated oenophile but am quite sure the more sophisticated pallet will find excellent selections.

Next, the atmosphere. We were assaulted as we entered Ruby's with LOUD music and almost left. Turns out there is live LOUD music in the bar but when you head to the restaurant, it is pleasant background entertainment. We had a table for four that was actually a large, long booth. Mom and I sat side by side which was kind of an odd seating arrangement for us, It was wonderful! We had a full view of the dining room. The decor is sort of eclectic - a mix of movie star photos and '20s murals and posters in bright colors. Its odd but it works. Our wall booth was a terrific viewing point for people watching. And watch we did!

The crowd was mixed. From business suits to well dressed ladies groups to romantic couples, the suited restaurant manager and assistant and the very busy waiters - we loved the people watching. Ladies, if you head to the ladies room, be prepared for the closest waiter to offer you his arm and escort you to the door. Sadly, I didn't need to visit so, sigh, no cute waiter escort.

I loved the convenient coat racks placed around the room thus skipping the need to check my coat, wait for a ticket, wait for my coat and tip. Silly complaint when spending $200 plus on diner but a pet peeve.

If you are not interested in an appetizer when you sit down, you will be a convert after watching the loaded seafood trays delivered around the room. Letting your server put together a tray could be pricey but oh my! I sated my desire with the 3-shrimp cocktail. It was served on a glass platter with a short martini glass filled with ice. The shrimp (to quote a Chicago Moo & Oink commercial) were as big as yo' fist! REALLY! I asked for extra lemon and alternated between the excellent cocktail sauce and lemon juice.

Mom had the crab bisque and is still talking about it. There were gigantic pieces of crab in the smokey soup and, as is her usual schtick, she tried very hard to analyze the ingredients. It was a large portion.

I couldn't resist the Kentucky Bibb Bleu. The salad comes in a cucumber 'bowl' and is topped with shredded apple. The balsamic dressing on spring greens is just perfect.

The bread was also perfect. Crisp, chewy crust with a fluffy, tender inside. The butter is served in a large square - half plain and half truffles something I can't remember. There is an adorable little round paper with the JR logo topping it.

Mom had the lamb chops. They came with a bordelaise sauce and she could not resist picking up the tiny bones and sucking them clean. We shared a large side of creamed spinach - very, very good!

Okay, okay - I know we should have stopped there but creme brulee is my undoing and I truly have never had better. They did not screw with it and it was nicely topped with fresh fruit. Too bad it was too late to add coffee because it would be, as all else was, perfect.

Now, the service. OMG. Our adorable server was Austin. Austin spent the perfect amount of time with us. He was a bit late in greeting us but another server, maybe Brian?, stopped by to say hello. After The Adorable Austin came over, he would stop between taking our order, pouring my wine, serving courses and just being all around charming to chat. It wasn't cloying or overbearing. We felt valued and welcome.

Jeff Ruby has come up with a very clever idea - the 'doggie bags' are actual cloth bags like grocery stores encourage you to buy and bring back. For less than a buck, Ruby advertises all over the Midwest with his large bags.

Our bill came to $168 and we left a $40 tip. $208 wasn't just the dinner bill. It paid for an unforgettable evening.

This place gets a solid 4 stars.

When I travel for work, I inevitably go to several steak houses because this is where all sales reps like to plan dinners. When I heard we were going to a steak house in Louisville, I rolled my eyes and thought, oh great, another steak house.

However Jeff Ruby's exceeded my expectations. They have a lively decor and vibe (unlike most steak houses where it's dark and bland) and the staff were fantastic. But the best thing about it was the food. I DID have the filet and it was delicious! Everything we had there was top notch (although I though the mashed potatoes were too salty).

I also was able to try bourbon for the first time (apparently Lousiville is THE place to have bourbon) and I really enjoyed what the staff gave me.

I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Louisville. It's on the pricy side but if you're going to spend money for steak, this is the place to go!

Okay - I am partial to this place for two reasons:

1) we dined here the night we got engaged (August 30th 2008)

2) the owner kicked O.J. out and told him "we won't serve you here" - yeah! now that is my kinda guy! (May 2007)

So on to our meal. We were greeted by valet - which is always nice. We sat at the piano bar and enjoyed our requisite Manhattens. The music was loud and good and the drinks were icy. The vibe was good - a mix of older folks (40s and 50s +) with a younger crowd too (30s) it is a bit pricey for the 20 somethings to tolerate. (think Ruth's Chris) You will easily drop $200 for two on bar tab, apps, bottle of wine, dinner with sides and coffee with dessert (tax and tip). However, I could see going here with a girlfriend and nibbling on apps and drinks for about $30 a person and feeling satisfied.

Anyway - we had a nice little cozy table and our waiter was lovely. We enjoyed a well priced bottle of Provenance Cab. The food was exquisitely cooked grass fed prime grade beef. I love a good steak.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate our new engagement! Although we live in California, my Fiance is from Louisville. We visit annually. I can't wait to go back to celebrate our anniversaries for many years to come.
