This sushi place is probably best option if you are limited to Union, NJ. In a sense its best of the worst sushi places in Union.
My experience, the ginger was discolored when I got take out and the prices are typical prices of a sushi places but again a few towns over you can get better quality for half price.
If sushi is a must and traveling is the bane of your existence at the moment then I would recommend this place to tame the urge.
Hope it helps....!
I ate here on a Saturday and sat at the counter. Â Although only 2 other diners there, service was slow. Â I ordered the sushi roll special, 2 rolls with miso soup and added a green salad for an extra $1. Â The salad was great and the dressing was delicious. Â I ordered a spicy salmon roll and a spicy tuna roll. Â They tasted exactly the same and lacked spiciness. Â This is a small restaurant, only has 6 tables and a counter that seats about 10. Â I'd say it was average as far as sushi restaurants are concerned.
Review Source:After reading some of the positive Yelp reviews, I gave the hometown sushi spot a try. Â Kyoto is small, six tables and a counter. Â The service was friendly and polished, although a bit slow.
I started with the seafood gyoza, six lightly fried pockets of whitefish and chopped shrimp served with a relatively flavorless dipping sauce. Â The gyoza were alright. Â They were followed by salmon and unagi (broiled eel) sushi, and both were fresh and very good. Â The sushi was cut thicker than most places, and the quantity of rice was decreased. Â I enjoyed this ratio of fish to rice. Â Also ordered was a spicy salmon roll which tasted very good, but was indistinguishable from an "unspicy" salmon roll, lacking even a little "bite."
I would characterize Kyoto as being a place that I'll return to, but one which is far too timid in their preparation to be stellar. Â That said, it is very good.
I love their rolls! Soup is very tasty, the best one so far that I had in US!
I recommend the Monsoon not in the Menu, but they always do it if u ask for it.
Shrimp tempura/mango/avocado & spicy mayo . Simply perfect!
The best sushi rolls & soup ever in NJ for me.
Only 4 stars because it s a little tiny!
I've been going to Kyoto for nearly three and half years now, and to this day I've had nothing but nice things to say about this place. Â My boyfriend became a fan, and a group of friends also became hooked on Kyoto. Â The sushi here is always fresh, and delicious, accompanied with fair prices! Â The staff is also awesome! Â I have tried numerous sushi places, and always come back to 'old faithful'. Â I most definitely recommend this tiny place to anyone who's willing to satisfy their taste buds :)
Review Source:Kyoto is right down the street from me and is a FANTASTIC place to swing by for some FINE Japanese sushi. The prices are completely fine, and the quality of their sushi and salad is spot-on. I've only been here once, but I will make sure to stop by on a more frequent basis since it's so close to where I reside in life.
Definitely the best sushi I've had in Union County so far. The menu is robust for sure (about 4 pages PACKED with pictures of items with descriptions) and they have some very unique special rolls.
(Spicy Tuna is flawless.)
Sushi Mooshy.
Small, quaint, "hole in the wall" on Chestnut St. Tremendous sushi. Chris D and Matt S (life partners) definitely got this 100% correcto mondo.
Let's hope this place doesn't blow up (literally, like on fire) like the other 5 stores that were once there!!!!!!
Remember to get the Edimames!!!!!
After giving this place a third try in the past couple of years (it's near work), I had to write a review. I'm unsure why the reviews are so good. I typically order sashimi or chirashi. I don't order rolls for lunch. Anyone can hide lackluster fish in tempura, mayonnaise and avocado. From what I can tell, the fish is frozen and thawed improperly (all sushi fish is required to be). It doesn't taste rancid, but the texture is horrible. Also, slicing sashimi thickly is not correct preparation. It's lazy. When it is too thick, you have to tear it apart. It should nearly melt in your mouth. Bottom line. Gave it three tries. Three lousy meals. Go to samurai in millburn instead.
Review Source:Really, Really good! I have to agree with some of the other reviewers, I wasn't expecting much when I saw it from the outside simply because it blended in with all the other stores in the area and Union isn't exactly known for fine cuisine but I'm glad I tried it. Nothing's too expensive there and Kyoto definitely does NOT have to jack up the prices like other sushi restaurants to prove it's quality. The food speaks for itself, best yellowtail, shrimp tempura, and lobster rolls I've had in awhile. The desserts are especially cheap, make sure you try the tempura ice cream and tempura bananas. The people who work there are also very nice and will sometimes even give you free food! Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
Review Source:I used to love eating here and thought it was the best sushi in the area (compared to other sushi places I've eaten at around Union). I haven't been here in a while because of me being sort of poor (the sushi can be a bit expensive here if you go often). Their chirashi is the best that I've had so far. That's pretty much my only favorite dish from that place. The service is always friendly and you almost always get a seat with no waiting (in spite of the miniscule space).
Review Source:A small place seating about 30 people with ok sushi. The portions seemed a bit small and the prices were a little more than necessary. The sushi quality was ok and could definitely improve on the sushi rice. All in all not a horrible place and I would opt for other sushi places before settling down for this one.
Review Source:Located in the "Five Points" area with tons of stores around it, Kyoto Sushi II is tucked away in a row of storefronts. Â I had been looking for some nice sushi in my area, and this seemed like a nice place to check out. Â While the exterior is very unassuming, the interior is really nice. Â There is a sushi bar on the left and most of the seating is to the right. Â You can't fit a ton of people in here, but that gives it an intimate atmosphere that I really appreciated.
The waitress attended to us right away, but also gave us the appropriate amount of space to get our order together. Â We ordered the sashimi regular plate along with the yellowtail/scallion and salmon rolls. Â At first, I felt the $16 price tag for the sashimi dish was a bit much for the area, but when I saw the thickness of each slice I was amazed. Â I think they were easily a third thicker than most sashimi slices I would get in Manhattan. Â The rolls were average sized but very tasty. Â The sashimi came with a salad and miso soup, which was a nice change of pace since most often dishes come with one or the other.
The facilities were clean and kept nicely. Â The restaurant was clean overall and I definitely got a great vibe from the place. Â Kyoto Sushi II definitely has a repeat customer in me!
Good, not great food. I go to Kyoto a lot because it's right near my house. Â The specials are usually the same thing over and over again which makes me wonder why they're called "specials". Â The sushi is decent but I wish they would revamp the menu because I'm getting tired of the same old thing. Give the sea urchin (uni) and mackerel sushi a whirl, they're both good. The specialty rolls are decent but not worth the price. The staff is very friendly which is a plus.
Review Source:I love this place. Â
Really humble, modest, clean establishment. Â The service is polite and friendly each and every time. Â I really have a soft spot for places like these. Â They might not catch your eye from the outside and it won't become a celebrity hotspot in the near future, but they don't care about that stuff. Â They just do what they do and they do it very, very well.
Rolls to try - Star Roll, Spicy Girl Roll, Volcano Roll, Mexican Roll, Fried Oyster Roll
Basically every roll I've tried here was EXCELLENT. Â So fresh. Â Minimal rice. Â Pretty and clean presentation. Â Sushi is one thing you cannot fudge. Â It's an art to prepare and you can't doctor the freshness of RAW fish. Â Duh. Â It suprises me how many places try to pawn off old fish. Â
If you have room, try their fried ice cream. Â The red bean is my favorite. Â I've never been a fan of fried ice cream until I've had it here. Â Their batter is light and not oily at all. Â Skip the whipped cream. Â Unneccesary. Â Other places I've had it was heavily coated and very greasy. Â
It's also BYOB. Â Leaves you more money for an extra roll!
That guy Chris D. basically hit it right on the head. I enjoy my sushi, but as guy that likes to eat a lot of food, sometimes sushi can get pricey. Kyoto does a good job of managing their prices with the amount of food you get.
I go to Kyoto maybe once a month for my sushi experience and I never have a complaint. They always have some sort of special roll for the day, which I recommend always giving a shot. Besides that, it is just a nice little town sushi restaurant that gets the job done.
When I'm back in New Jersey, there is only one place I go to fulfill my sushi desires: Kyoto. Set next to Il Forno Restaurant on Chestnut Street in Union, Kyoto is sort of inconspicuous amongst the hustle and bustle of Five Points, but I strongly suggest stopping in and trying their sushi. In the area, there is none better than Kyoto. The sushi is always incredibly fresh and the prices (for sushi) are not astronomical. I always order too much food there because there are so many dishes I enjoy. The nigri sushi combo is great and if you're more of a roll person, I highly suggest the Incredible Roll (crispy shrimp tempura with a spicy mayonnaise, topped with crab meat). The miso soup and salds are also really tasty. However, while their sushi and appetizers are usually great, they're other meals, specifically the teriyaki dishes, are simply okay and sometimes not really very good.
The dining-in experience is pleasant, as it is a small but well-decorated, modern place, and the servers are typically very attentive. One heads up is that they will typically tell you that your order will be ready in 15 minutes when its closer to 25 so take your time when picking up food here. Otherwise, for a local sushi joint, Kyoto II is really a great place to have near by.
