Still my favorite bar in town. At one point it was like my second home, it is still where I would take any out of town visitor who wants to see the real Louisville. Great jukebox and the outdoor area is nice (both front and back). The only time I would skip going is a Friday or Saturday night when the weather is bad because people will be packed like sardines.
Review Source:There's something almost magical about this bar that made it feel instantly cozy as soon as we sat down. I'd never been here before, and neither of us were locals, but it felt very welcoming. Maybe it was the instant service, or the insanely fair prices. Or the cat who sat in the bar stool next to me. Yes, I do mean a feline was seriously sitting next to me. It just seemed right somehow.
They have a noteworthy selection of beers from all over. Lots of exotic imports, as well as some local brews. And they had good liquor, being sold at half the price I'm accustomed to paying. The set up is tasteful and maybe a little vintage, but without being kitschy. My friend and I both commented on how much we liked it.
I really like this bar. Probably my favorite in Louisville. Great selection of beer on tap and I like the space. The outdoor patio in back is open and shady. Inside it's just a classic bar. They had $2.00 BBC Gold on tap... best 2 buck beer I've ever had, please and thank you. If I lived in Louisville I would come here so often that, surely, they would have a seat with my name on it.
Review Source:Nachbar is hands down my favorite "date" or "chill" bar. It's quiet enough (when there isn't a band) to carry a conversation, the beer selection is awesome, and it's very cozy. When they do have bands it can get crowded and loud, but it's all the more fun. The bands they have are always pretty awesome, focusing on talent from here in Louisville. My only complaint is that it isn't closer to my house!
Review Source:Nachbar is one of my favorite Louisville establishments. It's somewhat off the beaten path, located in the middle of a neighborhood in Germantown, but plenty of non germantown residents frequent it.
There are a multitude of reasons why I love this bar. It has a laid back quirky atmosphere that can be a bit cramped in the wintertime but has two enclosed patios lined with picnic tables that make it fairly easy to make new friends during warmer weather. Since the majority of people that frequent Nachbar are regulars, I seem to always run into at least one or two people I know.
In addition to this, on Wednesday nights they have live Jazz music on the back patio which Is quite enjoyable. They also occasionally have bands playing on the weekends.
Nachbar also has a large array of craft beers on tap ranging from $4 to $7. I find their liquor drinks to be even cheaper. While they don't serve food, more often than not, there is a food truck or two parked outside.
Very good neighborhood bar that serves affordable alcohol. We hit this spot during our Saturday night pub crawl a few weeks ago and had a fun time here. The outdoor area with picnic tables and benches is a great place to chill on a night when the weather is nice. One of my favorite bars in Germantown.
Review Source:Good place for beer, great patio area. It's pretty chill even when a band plays. there is seating outside in the front and back, good place for smokers. Staff is great, i was once there pregnant and all i wanted was bloody mary minus the alcohol, they make the best bloody mary's, and the bartender just made them for me for free all night, which was really sweet.
Review Source:I am not a huge fan of this bar but not entirely against it. It just isn't my scene. The atmosphere is what you would expect of a typical dive bar. Dark dingy and maybe even a little bit sticky. The bartenders are quick and accommodating however for everything I asked they said they didn't have. Â They seem to only have cheap wells or hard whisky or rum. No inbetween or anything for light weights like me. Other then that service was good and they had some kicking bands on the patio. Just try not to ask for anything fruity sweet mixed. Just taps or nothing.
Review Source:Feels like my back porch patio...
You have read the reviews so I'll just rinse and repeat why I and others love this place.
1. Great fenced in patio area with picnic tables
2. Great beer, lots of local beer on draft and bottle
3. Great staff with the owners there mostly every night
4. It's off the beaten path, if Robert Frost thought of a place to stop it would be Nachbar. This place always has solid business, but is never too overcrowded that you can not find a seat.
5. Personalized, I came with a group of over 20 and was still able to chat and relax with all of them.
6. Great date spot, I went here on a first date and had a great time connecting to my date while being entertained by the other patrons and live music
7. Pet friendly, there is always an adorable pet to be found to get my gushing puppy fix in
8. Live Music, great local bands
If you are looking to try something new and great you will find this place takes the cake. Plus this bar is located within a short car ride of the Highlands area, Downtown area, and other Germantown pubs.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence,
That two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I chose the one with Nachbar on it.
Great dive bar, hipster but not in a judge-y kind of way, decently priced drinks, great outdoor space.
As a fluent German-speaker, I am embarrassed to admit how long it took me to realize that Nachbar is the perfect name for this place. It means "Neighbor" and the bar is situated on the corner in a residential area. Also it is *in* Germantown. But in my defense, whenever the bar came up in conversation, I was mostly focused on the drinks we intended on having.
I decided we *had* to go in tonight after being told that they have my absolute favorite beer on tap. Stigel Grapefruit Radler. I was introduced to radler beer when I lived in Germany, and enjoyed at least a case of this particular brand and style last November when I was in Vienna visiting a friend on vacation. This is the first time EVER I have found a true Radler in the States. And I am so, so excited it's here. A bit pricey per  glass ($4.50, but as an unfamiliar import, not bad) but it's totally my jam and a great beer for the summer (light and a little sweet).
I don't know if their having this on tap is temporary....I'll have to go back to find out. And have another glass or two.
Nachbar is quite the establishment in Louisville for being a neighborhood bar. While a fair amount of people that frequent the place seem to live down the road, people flock here from miles (3-5 miles outside of Germantown to be exact) away. It's a great place to have an obscure craft beer for an affordable price. Or to have a Woodford Reserve for 5 bucks on a Saturday night. It's a great place to run into your neighbor. Or to sit at the middle school cafeteria-esque outdoor tables with the same group of people you came with and have known for the past 20 years. There's also a ton of fun ironic and not ironic bathroom wall writing to ponder over.
The only thing its not good for is to order just one $4 beer and pay with a card. There's a $5 minimum.
I am not a super fan of Nach, which I know can be a polarizing sort of place. Â Among my friends however, not so much. Â None of us is interested in hanging around the same group of 20 and 30 somethings that have patronized that bar since they first opened their doors back in ol' timey 2007. Â The clientele has legitimately not changed in their entire 5 years. Â And even then, it was just a sort of shifting of patrons from Cahoots and Outlook and the Back Door (crack whore) - they are all the same freaking people! Â
And yes, it is totally hipster of every variety. Â Old man, ex member of an obscure hard core band hipster; young hipsters wearing Forever 21 and hoping to bang their way up the social ladder; hippie hipsters (hippie-sters?) who unironically talk about astrology and communal living while wearing a $500 pair of boots; local farmers; local shop owners; artists, musicians, writers - freakin' hipsters all of them. Â And yes, in the interest of full disclosure, I am someone who would likely be described as a combination of all of the above. Â So, I kinda suck too. Â
Buy some sweet tea vodka, set up a few chairs in your backyard, invite a rando group of acquaintances over, and you'll be in your own little Nachbar without the worry of waking up in the morning next to a stranger with a handlebar mustache and a new STD.
when i saw that the ambiance was described as "hipster" i was kinda unsure how accurate it was, but it was pretty dead-on. any time you see about 70% of the patrons with tattoos and sarcastic/ironic tees and ensembles on (including a guy out at 1a wearing suspenders and a bow tie and a girl wearing a pillow box hat), you know it's hipster.
that being said, it's a decent bar. the drinks are moderately priced and strong. there was adequate seating. the jukebox could have had a better selection, but i found at least seven songs worth my money.
and you know it's gonna be a great night when you stand in line behind a guy with a pig. literally. by the end of the night, we had met the owner of said pig and my friend held the pig for over an hour. and we witnessed a dog standing on his hind legs on the chair, perched up at the bar. and the same dog and a cat get into a fight. weird night.
would i go back? maybe. is this a regular hangout? probably not.
This is a good Germantown bar. Â This bar is a 5 star kind of place if it's the summer and you get to sit outside most of your visit. Â The inside is not as nice, and sometimes the place has a bad stench. Â It has a solid beer selection, a good juke box, lots of young people, and it's a a lot of fun overall. Â The bartenders are cool to everybody, as long as you're not an ass. Â Hipster? Â Louisville doesn't have true hipsters so I wouldn't worry much about that. Â Hold your piss because the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. Â If you do pee, publicly wash your hands, or be judged by the cute girl you were hoping to impress.
Review Source:Solid, solid bar. This is definitely in the rotation of good time spots. In the winter time it does get pretty packed, which I don't love, but hey, that does often come in hand with a bar that has a known reputation. Good drinks, great draft list, couldn't agree more with Drew P's "no bullshit old bar" description. It isn't fratty, or full of 21 year olds. Laid back but upbeat.
Prices are about average for the area. It isn't dive bar prices, but reasonable. Oh and parking isn't great. Be prepared for that. And once the weather gets better, it has an awesome patio area. That will also get packed. Mid-week, this bar is perfect.
Ugh, "hipster" is now an ambience choice on Yelp? That's annoying. When did everyone become so obsessed with describing things as "hipster"? And can anyone define it without resorting to a cute coffee table book for, ironically, "hipper" living rooms? And since we're talking about the irony of the self-denying ironic "hipster" crowd, is that meta-ironic? Woof, my head hurts.
Well, I bring this up because everyone likes to talk about how Nachbar is the hipster hangout or whatever, and that's fine. It's a lazy conclusion, but people posses the innate desire to categorize things, which is totally cool. Such as life. In reality though, Nachbar is actually an anything-goes, wonderful hangout spot that appeals to a variety of crowds. There's no place like it. Nachbar is my hangout.
First, Nachbar is totally off the beaten path. It's as if a UFO just dropped it in the middle of a shotgun-house laden neighborhood. Inside, it looks like your grandmother's basement - wood paneling, tacky paintings, owl sculpture, jukebox spanning fifty years of rock and roll (what, your grandma didn't have one?). Dogs are allowed inside as long as they behave... which is a funny thought since most dogs behave better than humans do when they're beers deep. Nachbar recognizes that. You can often find some of the city's food trucks outside too - a nice perk considering, as pointed out earlier, Nachbar is an island onto itself. And they have the most massive outdoor patio for the warmer evenings. Sometimes live music too, including some national acts. Shows are always free.
As for the products sold - Nachbar's specialty is their sweeping selection of drafts that covers everything from super esoteric craft beers to more recognized imports and domestics. And the staff is super speedy, even when the place is packed wall to wall.
I love Nachbar. I refer to it as my "retreat," in that, if we go somewhere and it sucks, we can always retreat to Nachbar, and it'll always be fun. This has happened on several occasions. Its divey neighborhood feel, come-as-you-are attitude, and price point that respects any budget makes it one of the most comfortable places to go out, labels be damned.
"Nachbar" is Deutsch for "neighbor", an apt name. They fill you with delicious beer, which is very neighborly. Dogs and cats sniff at your feet (or crotch), also neighborly. Friendly clientele. Front patio. Back patio. Nicely nestled among Germantown shotguns and not in a strip mall. Pretty much your ideal neighborhood bar.
The best part is the beer. Sixteen taps, no crap on tap. To their credit, you can still get $2 Old Style or hard liquor if that's your preference. But you shouldn't go that route here, unless you're the type to get a hot dog at a Chinese restaurant.
Nachbar needs to start serving up pitchers and food. When they do, I'm packing my bags and moving in.
Nachbar aka Afterbar aka Tobar aka Snatchbar depending on your German skills. Best dive I've come across in Louisville. Local foreign and rockstar beer selection, affordable prices, killer smoker's patio, dirty in a way that reminds you how in contrast plastic is for the burbs.
Soul is rarer to find these days so when you find it lap it up and bath in its sultry glory. What defines soul? In my eyes, generally music that never made it to the poop charts, a bartender that suggests instead of nods, an ambience with scars to prove it's seen some things and if you ask has a great story, and in general just by showing up you come home with a story yourself.
So I happened upon this bar the first time I visited Louisville and the experience I had here along with a time-limited selection of a few other spots led in the end to my moving permanently to this town. Here's my Nachbar cherry:
I came to the Lou midweek, I think it was a Tuesday and my hostess had only lived here half a baker's dozen months herself but had heard Nach was if not "the" then "a" place to be. We snagged a LEO and low and behold it was spelling bee night. We decided we could spell better than most drunks so we went.
We arrived and were informed that spelling bee night had been replaced by jazz night. Jazz is one of those 'in the mood' events for me where at least a button down and martini are in order, but given there wasn't a button or a martini in the joint we decided it was ok. Whoa. It turned out to be a 15 piece group consisting of U of L music graduates who ripped jazz a new Heine Brothers. Good grief they were good. Have you heard an amazing jazz solo before? Try 15.
Every visit since has been similar, you can expect one awesome thing just by going, but most likely it will be replaced by a better.
This is the hippest dump in the ' Ville, and the only trick is figuring out how you can get your ' drank on here with never, ever, having to pee. I'm sure for the boys it's less of an issue but the Nach srsly needs to have some sort of restroom rehab fundraiser. Maybe they could just put a jar on the bar with a sign that reads HELP US KEEP OUR BATHROOM FROM GIVING YOU EBOLA on it. Yelpers have said this place is chock full ' o hipsters, but our " hipsters" in the ' Ville are pretty mild. It ain't like any of ' em are gonna hold you down and force you to listen to stories about how they got their last piercing. Plus, you can always escape to the patio. Four stars until they deal with the terrifying bathrooms.
Review Source:Being an out of towner, when the cab drove through the neighborhood to get here I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I walk in and see the bartenders watching Modern Family - immediately this is place I can get into. I ask the bartender what the deal on the nitro porter - his response "its a porter made with nitro" and walks away is just about as rude as it gets, and immediately I feel like I'm at home.
This place is the hipster hangout of Louisville, the place is covered in decorative owls. A good number of micro-brews to choose from, and on this particular night the fantastic "Friendly Neighborhood Big Band" was performing. This was the highlight of my business trip to Louisville - good vibes, leave you alone bartenders, and great music. Add some new friends and you have yourself a great Tuesday night.
She said, "We're headed for Nachbar. Follow me."
It was the beer walk. We'd already had a few. We stumbled after her. The people on the street that night got hipper and hipper as we got closer to our destination. When we arrived there was an outside table waiting for us.
Only 45 minutes to midnight when beer walkers were supposed to be off the street. We had time for one more before we stumbled home.
Glad we live in the neighborhood. Glad we have Nachbar.
Great beer list here. Â I went with some friends while visiting from out of town and had a good time. Â The booze was cheep. Â The bathrooms are horrible. Â There's a nice outdoor patio as well. Â Juke box was okay. Â A bigger selection would have been nice. Â Also the bartenders weren't all that friendly. Â Acutally the bartenders weren't friendly really in Louisville at all. Â There was a dude with a fur cap that came around and sold beef jerky for $5 a bag and that was pretty awesome.
Review Source:I am a big fan of this bar and the beer that it serves.
Ran into it randomly this summer after some touring friends played a show in town, and we loved the patio. Returned last night and enjoyed drinking beers at a table with my best gal when it was too cold to go outside.
It's my favorite bar I've been to in Louisville, and I'm already looking forward to going back when I'm in town.
Only in Louisville would one call someone wearing jeans NOT from Wal-mart with a black t shirt a hipster. I see very little true hipster activity in this place, however, I am from NYC. Most of what I view these regulars as are fashion followers who are still taking clues from the Urban Outfitters catalog, say, three years ago.
Staff is very friendly and can guide you in the way of selecting the beer of your particular poison. Seating is unique, take a stool at the bar, sit at a spot that will give you flashbacks to a basement in the 1970's, or take a gander out at picnic tables in the back, complete with 4" of rocks.
Many folks bring their dogs here, which is very comforting in a hippie sort of way.
A fun game to play: "Is She Dirty?" - watch the rest rooms. The women's and men's restrooms empty out to a single sink. Watch girls and guys, and see who washes their hands, and who doesn't. Gross, but fun to pass the time.
The first time I was taken to Nachbar I asked my friend who was driving if he was lost. It's in the middle of a fairly quiet residential neighborhood. Kind of strange, but I guess it works.
I've been here a few times now and I've enjoyed myself thoroughly except for this past weekend (which totally made it lose a star) -- the bathrooms were broken. PORT O POTTIES. Seriously. In 100 degree Kentucky summer heat. Need we say icky?
Lots of hipsters, lots of good beer, reasonable prices, cool patio. Just really, really would like indoor plumbing next time.
I LOVE this bar. It has a great scene, strong drinks and a good list of imported beers. Located in Germantown, on a small street, which seems like you're in the middle of no where... Dogs are allowed which is a plus, and they have live music on certain nights...
So for a local Louisville dive, this place ranks top of my list...
the place is small but has a great outdoor seating area. Â sells cheap beer and is opened until 4am so i guess that's a plus. Â
if this place was transplanted in chicago, it's a place i would go hang out in. Â
it's got that dive bar feeling that i love so much. Â dark, dank, and smelled of b.o. Â i can do without the b.o. but it's a package deal.
I was going to write about how crowded the bar was, then I remembered I showed up with 100 other mopeders on a Friday night.
Nachbar's friendly and polite staff let me wander all around with my drink and made small talk while checking my ID. They didn't exhibit the unfortunate power trip that plagues so many other bar staffers.
The beer island in the back offers a few beers the main bar doesn't have.
Great place, friendly people, unique social mix, cheap strong libations.
The place is a small old school dive, with as much or more space outside in the front and back patio areas, than there is inside. Â If you like fancy, skip this place. If you like quality over style and high prices, this IS the place.
It gets crowded on weekends after 9-10pm, but when it is warm, the people spread out and it is a nice social realm.
Parking is the only draw back when going to the Nachbar(which means  NIGHT BAR).
The Nachbar is my one of my favorite places to spend an evening when I visit Louisville.
I enjoy seeing the queers, carhartts, and aging-hipster-literrati all in one establishment: it reminds me why I love Kentucky.
The drinks are well priced and the beer selection is decent (and by decent I mean largely domestic). They could use more tables inside (how about some booths?!); they certainly have the space. The patio has a good amount of seating to accomodate smokers and non-smokers alike.
Adding to the neighborhood feel (Nachbar does mean neighbor in German, no?), dogs always seems welcome at the bar, which I like.
Be warned that parking is hard to come by (it is in the belly of Germantown), so be prepared to circle some blocks and park on the narrow streets.
Wow, I'm excited to be writing the first review on here! I was a little hesitant to write about Nachbar because it's one of those great neighborhood bars that is so laid back and friendly, you sort of don't want to let the word out. But I just had to review it to say that I super appreciate no-nonsense bars and this one in particular. And now that Louisville has re-implemented its smoking ban, there's nothing keeping me from hanging out all night.
