I was at Pockets once a long time ago. Â It was a brisk spring day in 2001, not long before I graduated 8th grade. Â I had been to the district-wide spelling bee representing my school and had lost spectacularly (the word was "Himalayan". Â No one told me there would be proper nouns, dammit!) Â Before bringing me back to school, my parents took me to Pockets to cheer me up since it was nearby and purportedly healthy.
It was awful, easily the worst cheering up ever. Â It's the worst kind of "health" food where the bread is gritty and everything is low-fat and completely flavorless. Â Most parents would have sprung for a sundae or something. Â Not mine! Â I never went back.
Until now.
Boyfriend and I were out running errands and wanted something quick that wasn't deep fried or in a bun. Â Stopped at Pockets thinking, that was a long time ago! Â I'm sure my tastes have matured.
My tastes may have, but Pockets has not. Â This location was empty except for one guy sitting by the window nursing a Pepsi. Â We ordered from a nice but very unenthusiastic lady at the counter, then sat with our food as another employee mopped around us.
At 2:30 in the afternoon.
With a solution that smelled like ammonia.
While we ate.
Despite the cleaning, this place is filthy. Â And it's a bad sign when your business is buying its straws, napkins, and TP from Jewel (Essential Everyday, wassup). Â Are you just not doing enough business to order from restaurant supply, or did you run out and have to run out to Jewel?
The food is as bad as I remember, except the bread, since now I like gritty hearty breads with a lot of protein. Â But it's very dry and needs butter, so I guess there goes your low-cal meal. Â The chicken is the pre-cooked pre-chopped kind that comes in a sealed plastic bag. Â And the minestrone soup I had was on par with the icky Campbell's Selects minestrone soup.
All in all it was very expensive for an experience that was pretty unpleasant. Â This location is obviously not long for this world. Â Goodbye, Pockets!
Please note that this review is based on service and overall offerings... We never had a chance to actually taste the food!
We needed to stop somewhere quick for food before heading over to the Lincoln Tap Room for a friend's event. Â We wanted something hot and would've stopped at any fast food place if we had seen one... Unfortunately, we didn't pass one decent fast food joint once we got off the interstate!
We review the menu... I decide on a calzone. Â The woman at the counter says, "15-20 minuites." and precedes to stare at me. Â I ask her if that's how long it will take to make my meal and she simply nods...
My bff asks if all of the pockets are served cold. Â The woman says no. Â She asks if they can be toasted and the woman nods blankly. Â The guy next to the woman realizes what my bff is asking and says, "No, all of our pockets are served cold. Â The meat and the veggies are cold. Â There is no toaster." Â
I then try to order some Dip Sticks. Â Bread sticks can't be hard can they? Â The woman says, "10-15 minutes." Â *sigh* Â I gave up, grabbed a bag of chips, and decided to eat later.
The bff asked if there were any baked potatoes ready or if they had to be cooked too... Nobody answered her! Â
Nowhere on the menu does it state that it will take a certain amount of time for them to prepare these menu items for you. Â This place present itself to be like Subway or Quinoz, not a sit down dining experience!
Honestly, I don't think I'll ever try Pockets after this experience! Â Why on earth would you be open at 7:30 pm on a Friday night if you don't have anything available to serve?!
the bbc calzone, no bacon, if you choose to lead a meatless lifestyle like moi, YUM. only unfortunate thing is that the calzones take about 20 minutes to prepare so always call in advance to get it started. recently i was at work and decided to get my calzone delivered. i got on pockets website to get the phone number and they actually have online ordering! i got to simply enter my exact order and then wait for it to be delivered, no hassle. i was very pleased with the experience and i'm sure i will be ordering even more frequently now.
Review Source:This place deserves 0 stars. My fiancé and I ordered from here Thursday night after a long move and four hours later I woke up sick having received food poisoning. I had not eaten anything all day before Pockets, and while my fiancé didn't get sick I had other ingredients in my calzone including onions. It was so bad I had to go to the hospital and be put on fluids and pain medication. When my fiancé called to let them know as a way for them to make sure it doesn't happen to others, as well as an FYI, they were horribly rude and couldn't have been less empathetic. We weren't looking for anything other than an apology and they interrogated my fiancé trying to make it like we were lying. Be cautious before coming back here. They've lost two customers and many others who I have already warned. The only way one stars makes it on the list is that someone called us to offer his condolences and a coupon back to Pockets.  Either way, I am pocketing Pockets.
Review Source:I've ordered from this Pockets a few times and it's always just average. A recent visit was particularly terrible though... I ordered the Southwest, but requested no onion, pepper or tomato. After waiting nearly 40 minutes and watching 4 people come and go with their orders, my Pocket was finally available. When I got it home, it had onions, peppers and tomatoes. How frustrating! I realize that what I requested to be left off was probably in the pre-made mix of beans etc, but couldn't they have told me that when I ordered? I would have gotten something else. Â Waiting 40 minutes for something I didn't want means that I won't be coming here again.
Review Source:I don't think i've had this ambivalent of an experience in a while. There was nothing they did wrong, but nothing really all that right either. It was just was
I was driving by and felt like stopping in since some sort of sandwich was needed. I got a southwest chicken pocket and some chicken chili. The "pocket" was really just a giant chicken salad with corn and beans along with a whole wheat roll. They gave some chipolte sauce too and it was pretty meh. The chili was okay, i've had better.
The service was very fast. The cans of pop were a bit overpriced, but on the whole they were alright, but there are many many other places to go first
This Pockets is the last one standing. Â Clark St was the first casualty, followed by my beloved Glencoe location, and soon after North Ave closed its doors. Â I hate the location, as it's not easy to get to from my place and I'm never a fan of delivery. Â The food is as solid here as any of the former pockets locations. Â I only go once in a blue moon now, but their calzones are the best around! Â They also have great pockets and salads. Â It's a healthier approach to fast food.
Review Source:Call me crazy but I think the cleanliness of the store really dictates if I like it or not. This store isn't winning any Martha Stewart spic and span awards. But they have fast service, never screw up my order and if I can hold my breath long enough, I can get in and out with my pocket in hand without breathing in any noxious odors to ruin my appetite. Seriously peeps, please clean the place because you've got some yummy, healthy food you're whipping up.
Review Source:I've got no beef with Pockets and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. At first, I was sad when the Clark St location closed, but I've been ordering from this outpost for almost a year now and haven't had any problems.
They're fast. Convenient. And somewhat healthy!
My go-to delivery when I'm too busy to leave the house or I face a sad, empty fridge.
No, it's not amazing... but hey, they're not trying to pawn themselves off as a foodie's dream. They do simple well, and keep it predominantly fresh. I've never had a problem with wilted lettuce anyway!
I usually spring for the Southwestern chopped salad which comes with half a pocket. Large enough to make two meals, and cheap enough to keep me coming back for more.
Every 10 orders you earn a $10 credit. I've cycled through two now, so yeah... I like my Pockets all right!
I wanted to love the hell out of this place. So much so that I endured its crappy food on not one, not two, but THREE occasions.
Why the pockets suck:
1. It's mostly bread and hardly any other ingredients.
2. They're dry (Dip it in sauce or dressing you say? Well that kind of takes the point of eating healthy out of the equation, huh?)
3. Pretty expensive, considering I've never finished one due to lack of satisfaction.
4. The cheese has no flavor at all.
5. SO MUCH LETTUCE!
6. They fall apart almost instantly and you end up picking through the remains with a fork trying to salvage the money you just wasted.
7. The soup is the same sort of crap that Panera gets...frozen soup in a bag loaded with sodium and MSG. Not at all healthy.
8. The employees are straight up rude. On the phone and in person.
9. They take forever to make the simplest thing. Although, I guess all that lettuce is really time consuming...
10.The delivery is slooooow. And if you complain, see #8.
No thanks, Pockets!
The concept of the pocket is a good one. The bread is tasty but the options they have aren't that great. A custom pocket is probably a better option and it wont be cheap.
The calzones are large but average tasting at best.
Food quality is good. All the ingredients are fresh. No issues there.
Not the worst place but definitely on the low end of my list.
I stopped in here for a quick bite one evening before a show down the street. I was looking forward to a "pocket" because it looked yummy and healthy. After eating, I wasn't impressed.
I ordered a "pocket" with chicken, green pepper, red onion, mushrooms, Swiss cheese and lettuce. The "pocket", which is really just a large square bun cut in half, didn't hold all of the ingredients. Everything came spilling out the sides. I felt like I was eating mostly bread. The chicken, pepper, onion, mushroom and cheese were of good quality, but the lettuce seemed wilt-y.
I was the most upset with the price that I was charged. I was under the impression that I was getting charged a different price according to the menu than the amount that showed up on my bank account. The amount charged was ridiculous for the food that was provided. I was in a hurry and probably should have looked at the receipt before leaving.
I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. There are plenty of other healthy places to eat at.
Am I a freak? Why do I like this place when lots and lots of my friends and acquaintances think it's unappetizing? Maybe they don't like it because they expect pita bread instead of what pockets offers. I personally think the bread they use is wonderful and far superior to pita, and I love how they heat it up and it maintains the fresh-baked quality.
I love the combo of salad and bread and yummy ranch! They also have great chicken chili! I recommend the Popeye's pocket with turkey.
I order from here about every two weeks. Â I have graduated to pockets and salads, but there calzones, soups, and potatoes are awesome as well. Â For someone who doesn't love veggies this is a great option to get in some healthy stuff that also tastes good. Â And for those who don't know a calzone IS an inside out pizza...
Review Source:I babysit and the mother orders this food for dinner for the kids (and me if i can't convince her "im not hungry") It's NASTY.
The calzone is basically inside out Domino's pizza but stuffed into an entire loaf of bread. Picture a bread football. Their food is all bread. I am not a carb-psycho (i love bread) but this isn't even good. It's like going to Jewel and buying a huge loaf of bread and stuffing it with sauce and cheese. SICK.
I was sick once and I had casually thought about Pockets and I ended up vomiting. Not a good sign that it literally makes me sick at the thought of it. PASS. Slowly they are closing all over (suburbs, clark st. etc.)
I can relate to all the negative reviews of this place. When I first tried pockets about 3 years ago I thought it was disgusting and vowed to never go back. Fast forward to 6 months ago. I was REALLY feeling the lunch pressure. Basically, I was tired of jimmy johns and looking for a place to get some fiber and a semi-healthy lunch. My coworker mentioned pockets and I cringed. But, he talked me into it. I was way surprised! Maybe I built this place up in my mind as the worst of the worst and hence was pleasantly surprised when they didn't serve me cat vomit, but I'm thinking that its more likely that the food is just pretty good.
I eat here probably around once a week and I'm always happy with what I get. I've never had a calzone from here though. I always get the small salad that I can design myself. If you go this route, get the greek dressing! Its delicious! For a relatively small price you get a HUGE salad -- the small usually lasts me two days. Sure, maybe some of it could be tastier, but who expects a gourmet salad when they pay 6 dollars for it??????
I'M ADDICTED! I enjoy my weekly visit, wish it was more then once but...
I like the selection they have from Pocket (shaped like a pita but it's bread). You select your choice of meat and dressing.
They have daily soups and salds. Calzones are always popular.
Kids menu available as well.
I ordered a turkey pocket with just mayonnaise and lettuce. Seemed like a simple enough order. The guy behind the counter said that they don't have mayonnaise. I was shocked at first, but then I saw the five one gallon drums of mayonnaise on the shelf directly behind him. I pointed it out, and he said that it was for the salad dressing. I asked if he could slap a little of that on my turkey pocket, and he said no!
What kind of a sandwich place doesn't offer mayonnaise?!!!!
And the pockets are REALLY overpriced!
Ew, I loathe Pockets. I used to work in the Athenaeum and got stuck eating there at least once a week. The bread tastes like cardboard, the sandwich stuffings are rarely if ever fresh, and the salads are always bland. In fact, there is a certain taste to everything served at Pockets: it all tastes like old, dead lettuce or something.
The only good thing they serve is their clam chowder, which is still just good, not great. I'm still in this area pretty often but I always just go down the street to Jimmy Johns for a sandwich now that it's open.
I'm not sure if it was because I was on the rag or because the weather was doing crazy things, but for the following two days after my first Pockets experience, I felt absolutely disgusting. Â And I didn't eat anything else weird or new that day. Â You know when you feel like you're going to vomit but you don't actually have to, so that feeling just kind of sits in your stomach for two days and then it turns into a raging headache and you don't really want to eat solid food until the feeling goes away? Â That's how Pockets made me feel.
I didn't understand - it's just salad stuffed into bread. Â I got the Asian one, whatever that one is, and I swear there was something wrong with the onions. Â My friend got the same thing and she was fine, but this was about a week ago and I still feel a little pukey when I think about it.
I'd like to give it another chance but I won't. Â Sorry, Pockets. Â Gross me out.
Pockets is like the McDonald's of salads. Â They basically shred up a head of iceburg lettuce and toss it into some soggy bread, and then douse it all in dressing. Â I just don't see what the attraction is. Â Iceburg is nutritionally worthless, and a big slab of bread + lots of dressing != healthy. Â I honestly think I'd rather have a McDonald's salad these days - at least they use romaine.
Review Source:(PICKED) POCKET
I don't get it.  $10 for this salad explosion in a styrofoam box? And is it really that healthy when you add the carbs from the bread  (almost 500 calories according to their website!) and the fat from the salad dressing?
I'd much rather walk a few blocks up to Whole Foods and grab a salad there.
Everyone that I tell Pockets is great asks for nothing short of their money back from me and I can't figure out why. Â I am a vegetarian and have only tried the meatless items, but I love everything I try. Â The pockets themselves are hearty and delicious, the salad dressings are tasty, and you end up with a pocket and a salad because they are overstuffed. Â Why do people hate this place so much?!?!
Review Source:it's not bad, but i am not a fan. Â it is definitely healthier and better-tasting than most fast food, but the ingredients are underwhelming. Mixed together, the pocket sandwiches themselves don't even live up to the sum of their parts. Â agree that the restaurants are kind of dirty, and the food is on the expensive side.
Review Source:I am a HUGE Pockets fan. Â And have been for more than a decade. Â Today I went to this store location on Lincoln and was totally underwhelmed by the food. Â I was competely grossed out by the dirty tables, dirty windows (from the inside), filthy bathroom (no soap either), etc... Â eeeeew!! Â I won't be back to Pocket's for a while, and certainly will scratch this location off the list.
Trust me - I'm super sad about this. :(
If you are looking for a filling fast meal that's several levels healthier than a trip to Burger King, Pockets is a pretty good choice. Â Their signature dishes are basically combinations of chopped vegetables, cheese, and/or tuna/meat served in a tasty, warm, fresh-baked pocket of soft bread. Â You have the option of ordering dressings on the side if you want to add some calories to your pocket. They also have calzones but I'm not a big fan of those, they take forever to bake.
Review Source:Pockets is sorta a healthy alternative to fast food that can take a lot longer. Â They are named after their signature dish, a calzone pocket filled with veggies, meats and cheese. Â They also have salads, baked potato dishes and soups. Â It can take a while for them to prepare the pockets, so it is good to call ahead for carry-out orders. Â The dining area is simple and clean with a large windows to gaze out of.
