Let me start the 1st time I ate at Ruth's Chris was 2004 and I should have kept it that way. Now 9 years after I was disappointed. When you go to a "upscale steakhouse" and order your steak medium it's a fair assumption that you will not receive a medium rare steak. The waiter was not on his game, the Manager was making excuses and my dinner experience was not good. I guess this place is just not for me.
Review Source:Very disappointing with service and food well below expectations.  Being an experienced traveler visiting 5 star hotels and restaurants around the world my expectations were high and confident my 25th anniversary would be incredible at the prestigious Ruth Chris.  Yelp it was bad and for the price EXTREMELY bad.   My wife, child, and I ordered a filet, strip, and a  ribeye with mushrooms, salads, two sides - au gratin potatoes and asparagus, and a bottle of Don Perignon - yelp $500+ dinner.  The interesting concept is multiple servers to present redundant information and then confuse the patron with no accountability.  The specials were described twice and the wait staff lost...finally ordered and the food delivered by yet more staff.  The frequency and timing of service attending the table was way off even with too many staff members - too frequent saying the same thing then absent.  Well the mushrooms were cold and my daughters filet cold....so escalation occurred and some mgr acted like he cared and took my entire plate ...gone...and of course a new person returned with the plate and wallah now the mushrooms were hot and to make matters worse the steak overcooked - gad - a $50+ dollar steak now prepared as a hamburger cooked well. They must have just put the whole plate back in the oven given the time it took....do you send it back again ?....no just eat.  Well of course now the time has passed the flavorless potatoes were cold as well as the asparagus....of course no mgr seen again or a request for feedback on the experience!!!  I could have provided valuable customer feedback for improvement to maybe help the next customer experience. Oh well so much for the bubble burst and severe let down...I will certainly consider this experience in future celebrations and choose wisely.

Ruth's Chris is always a consistently great choice. Â Their steaks are top quality and the atmosphere is friendly. Â The starter harvest salad was great, My ribeye was seasoned and cooked perfectly, the broccoli au gratin was also pretty tasty. Â I ate at the bar tonight and they had a very skilled piano player and sweet friendly bartender (Renee). Â Everything was good the only reason I don't give a five is I reserve those for something truly outstanding and unique. Â This place is fantastic but doesn't quote have that.
Review Source:Brunch before a Colts game was the inspiration to dine here. The brunch was limited in variety but the quality was good. The highlight was their signature bread pudding. Was very disappointed in the Bloody Mary. When we quizzed the server about it being 'thin' he inquired and reported they used Hoosier mamma mix but did in fact 'thin' it down with soda water. Hmmmm well the result was a very thinned down drink. He did have the manager remove t from our bill as the brunch price of $24.95 did not include a drink. With 4 home games left I will likely try other places before going back.
Review Source:First visit to Ruth's Chris and it was okay. Let me start out by saying that we visited on a Sunday morning for brunch before a Colt's game, which they only offer the brunch buffet during home games.
The brunch was good, not great, but for the price I think it was fine. For $25 a person they had the standard breakfast options: eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit and bread pudding, and for lunch they had prime rib, chicken, ham, salmon, wild rice and roasted vegetables. The prim rib was excellent, the salmon was very good with the wild rice.
We dined here for my parents 40th wedding anniversary and they had rose peddles on the table, the server welcomed us by name and congratulated them, and also brought out champagne and chocolate covered strawberries to finish our meal with. Those extra touches were great and my parents were thrilled.
All-in-all the brunch is your standard buffet fare, and for only $25 it isn't a bad deal, but given that this is a well-known steakhouse, I was hoping for a little more. I would return for dinner to get the true sense of this restaurant as I don't think this brunch truly represented what this restaurant has to offer.
We have been coming here for years.  On a recent visit (8/2012), the filet mignons and creamed spinach were still awesome, but the au gratin potatoes were changed:  they used to be diced with a  nice cheese sauce, now they're just sliced with cheese sprinkled on and melted.  A step backward for a fine restaurant.
Review Source:Oh. My. Word. If you've been in Indy for any length of time, treat yourself and stop in here for some awesome steak! Seriously the best steak I've ever had. The boyfriend was equally impressed, and he has been to France.
We decided on this place for our weekly date, especially for the Devour Downtown menu ($30/person), and Rob said he's always wanted to try their steak. This was a DIVINE dining experience with top notch service, and a wonderfully simple menu. There are three courses on the DD menu: starter, entrée, and dessert. The portions were very generous, and everything was beyond fresh and delicious. We started with house salads - it was mostly baby spinach, which I love; none of that stupid iceberg lettuce. Dressings were amazing. For my entrée, I had a 6 oz. filet, medium, with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. The filet melted in my mouth, and it was as big as both of my fists put together. The sides were large enough that we shared the broccoli. He had the 10 oz rib-eye, Pittsburg-style medium, and it was equally delectable. Finally, we had cheesecake for dessert - the size of a cupcake, but that was plenty! It was topped with fruit and a side of dark chocolate bark with nuts and sea salt. We continuously complimented the food as we ate; just savoring the beautiful taste of proper fine dining.
The waiter was beyond polite, referring to me as "the lady" and him as "sir", clearing our table at each course. The service as a whole was sufficient with the right balance of attention to our needs. This restaurant exceeded my expectations, and really satisfied us both in every way.
We had a celebratory dinner here. Â It was maybe 4-4.5 stars we all thought. Â The wife and I shared the porterhouse steak for 2, medium. Â It was quite nice, but salty from over seasoning, and we actually could have done without the butter on the signature sizzling hot plate. Â Pretty good with the two cuts of meat on each side of the bone (filet and NY strip), but those taste tweeks kept the rating off of 5 stars. Â Son enjoyed his rare cowboy ribeye - very good but not the best ever. Â Daughter had a petite filet medium. Â The requested temperatures all came out good this time (the usual one notch cooler at these fine dining places). Â This Ruth's Chris is also quite roomy with several dining areas. Â You can't go wrong with Ruth's Chris for a special dinner, but it just wasn't 5 stars for us on this night.
Review Source:Ruth's Chris is the classic steak house. Â Rich woods, white table cloths and noisy ambiance.
Started the meal off with lobster bisque.  It was rich and decadent  as you'd expect but I've had better.  The soup was followed with the chopped salad.  It's a "julienne iceberg lettuce, baby spinach and radicchio are tossed with red onions, mushrooms, green olives, bacon, eggs, hearts of palm, croutons, bleu cheese, lemon basil dressing and then topped with crispy onions."   OMG this salad is a was *amazing*!!!!!  I would literally come back just for this. Â
My main course was the filet with char butter (a spicy butter?) and it was excellent. Â That night and the next (as you can see, I completely overindulged!). Â My table shared the mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus and creamed spinach as sides. Â
I judge establishments by their restrooms. Â I expected this Ruth Chris's to be extremely nice but what I found was about on par with what I would expect at a fast food chain. Â Fix up the bathroom and that 5th star could be yours.
Yes, another steak house in Indy, and a chain at that. Â But you gotta admit, they do a great steak. Â We ate here for a special occasion dinner and ordered the classics--rib eye, filet, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Â if you have a big appetite, order the cowboy ribeye--bone in and full of flavor. Of course the steak was done to perfection and cost a pretty penny. Â Served up sizzling on a hot plate, don't wear your best silk shirt without wearing a bib (now I need to go to the drycleaners.) But we also ordered the seared ahi tuna appetizer, which is served chilled with a spicy mustard sauce. It was tough to choose between that and the lobster app. And since it was a special occasion, we ordered dessert even though I was stuffed from dinner. Â What a great idea. Â The Bread pudding in whiskey sauce was huge and hugely awesome. Â Warm and soft and pillowy and saucey, I couldn't stop myself from finishing it off. Â I'd come back just for dessert again! Â Service was very quick and formal. Â So come for the steak, but save room for dessert!
Review Source:My wife and I went on a very busy Friday night. Â We had reservations and were seated right on time. Â Ruth's was participating in the Devour Downtown event and we both decided to order off the special menu.
The menu was small and focused and quite good. Â We both thought that if we had ordered off the regular menu, that we could have split the meal and had plenty of food. Â In other words, the Devour menu was the perfect amount and very tasty. Â My wife had the steak and I had the chicken. Â We split the two sides offered and even had room for the little cheescake with the chocolate bark.
The wine list was ok, too many wines that you can find everywhere, but we managed to find a nice little Cabernet Franc from Steele for under $50. Â Very nice, 2007 vintage and drinking great. Â We even took the 1/3 of a bottle that we did not drink home with us. Â All wrapped up in a nice little Ruth's Chris bag.
Service was very good. Â Seasoned waiters with help filling the water and trying to replace the bread and butter. Â
Great value for the evening and we were in and out in less that an hour without feeling rushed.
Meh is a frequently overused word, but I really feel like it is appropriate in this case. How was your experience at Ruth's Chris, DeAnna? Â Meh.
I am a huge fan of butter. Â Second to bacon, it may be the best food invention ever. Â Their steaks come out drenched in butter on hot plates so that they sizzle and taste like a dream. Â The downside is that the entire restaurant smells like burnt butter. Â The smell hits you in the face when you walk in, and to me, it was nauseating.
The service was not substandard by any means, but was not the high level I was expecting. Â The hostess took our coats, but we had to sit for a minute or two before we could be seated at one of the numerous open tables.
Our server, Julie, was nice, but took nearly ten minutes to return to take our order after initially introducing herself. Â After that, she was moderately attentive, but definitely not at the level of an Eddie Merlots or Flemings. Â
As I said before, the steak was perfection. Â Blue cheese crust was flavorful, cut of beef was tender and a perfect medium rare. Â I wasn't a fan of the hot plate it was served on, though. Â It took forever to wait for each bite to cool enough to eat it. Â The rest of the meal was decent but unforgettable. Â The salad had a couple of wilted pieces. Â Not a big deal for the Devour Downtown menu, but if I had been paying the full $8 price, I was have been pretty upset. Â The Caesar dressing was nothing to write home about and did not taste homemade. Â Same with the mashed potatoes. Â For dessert, we were served dark chocolate bark and cheesecake. Â I may be the last milk chocolate holdout, but dark chocolate just doesn't do it for me. Â And I do like a bit of salt in my chocolate, but to me, it tasted oversalted. Â The cheesecake had some weird sour cream type topping that hubby and I agreed was just strange. Â Overall, swing and a miss, but I might come back for the steak.
Went to Ruth's Chris last night for their Devour Downtown menu. Â $30 for an appetizer, steak, and dessert....can't beat that! Â Â Had the seafood gumbo first. Â Was OK. Â Good flavor, but not spicy enough. Â Had the 10 oz. ribeye (medium rare) for my entree. Â Â Steaks at Ruth's Chris come out on a 500 degree plate doused in butter(!). Â USDA Prime quality. Â Nice marble with plenty of fat to render.
Review Source:I attended a Colt's tailgate party catered by Ruth's Chris. Â I was excited to go because I heard good things about the restaurant.
It was some of the worst buffet food I've had. Â The field greens salad was ok, but you can't really screw that up since it comes in a package.
Next they had creamed spinach which tasted like it was not made from scratch, but came out of one of those big food pouches you cut open to heat and eat.
Then there were the bland, dry duchess potatoes. Â They really needed salt and seasoning, yet none was provided.
However, the worst part of the meal was the one thing Ruth's Chris is known for...meat. Â It was the sorriest looking buffet dish of meat I've ever seen. Â The meat looked like ribeyes that were cooked to death (past well done) then left in a chafing dish with broth. Â They were grey and unappetizing. Â Everyone seemed to complain about the food.
After Ruth's Chris catering experience, I will never step foot in their restaurant and pay those ungodly prices for a good steak.
I can cook filet perfectly myself at home every time.
Have been and probably will always be a fan of the Ribeye here. Marbled and full of flavor (servers are not allowed to say "fat". They push the filet and while it is good just have never bought into the hype. Traditional steak house sides and salads. Big fan of the lyonaise Potatoes, one of the best Steak house versions I have had. Deserts are always well received too!
The service has always been above average here. I cannot say that for our last visit. It was just off. We have been coming here for 5 or 6 years now when in town and have had the same server for nearly every trip. Maybe he just had a bad day or maybe just been there too long. Will know next time we visit
our favorite indy steak house.
really professional & friendly service.
great food quality.
its dressy - but they don't care if you're not.
we don't like the decor of this particular ruth's chris as well as downtown chicago, or phoenix - but still - the food and service are wonderful. Â something about those cobalt blue lights doesn't seem right.
Came to Ruth's Chris during the MotoGP race weekend. Â The dining area began to fill up quickly with tourists (like us) but the servers did not miss a beat. Â My girlfriend and I really enjoyed their attentive service and their asking if we were celebrating anything special that night. Â
Of course, the steaks were amazing and I would strongly recommend the fresh seasonal berries dessert. Â
Can't wait to go back for The 500!!!
I believe this is my last stop in downtown Indianapolis for Steak. Â I have tried St.Elmo's, Morton's Shula's, Capital Grill, Weber, etc. Â I was ready to try the place that has PRIME written on the door as you walk in. Â
We decided to try the Seasonal Classics three course meal.  We both selected the "Fresh crisp romaine hearts tossed with romano cheese and a creamy Caesar dressing. Topped with shaved parmesean cheese and fresh ground black pepper."  My wife went for the  "6-ounce medallion of our filet topped with jumbo shrimp", while I had the 9-ounce filet.  We accompanied our steaks with their signature mashed potatoes.  For dessert, we had the duo of Cheesecake and Chocolate Pecan Bark. Â
After we placed our order, I excused myself to wash my hands and when I returned, I found my napkin folded into a swan. Â I thought that was fun! Â We were first delivered a fresh from the oven french baguette with a side of whipped butter. Â This bread almost kept me from enjoying the rest of my meal. Â It was so good. Â The sound of the crackling when you broke it apart even now makes my mouth water.
The steaks came out sizzling topped with butter. Â We were warned that the plates were very hot. Â The first bite was amazing. Â Very juicy and tender. Â I ordered it medium-rare and it was cooked to perfection. Â This steak was very different. Â It was hot from the first bite to the last bite. Â I asked how they prepared it and was told they have an 1,800 degree oven. Â I don't know if that is a gimmick, but the results left me very pleased. Â I only had a few bites of the potatoes because the steak was distracting me. Â I did have one shrimp, a generous donation from my wife. Â It was spicy and a good compliment to to steak.
The dessert was a nice portion. Â It could have been split by the two of us, so we ended up taking some of it home.
Overall Ruth's Chris has been wonderful and I look forward to returning.
Let me preface by saying that a certain family member has an ownership interest in this particular Ruth's Chris Steak House; therefore, I am biased. I'm used to excellent service, and have generally always received this at the D/T Indy Ruth's Chris.
On this past Saturday, we had a group of seven, and the reservation was not under my name. However, the reservation was under a good friend who is kind of the Paris Hilton of the Downtown Indy restaurant / club scene...well, sans ovaries that is.
My friend, who is kind of a Doctor of sorts (not really), gets the good tables, just as I would when dining at Ruth's Chris. When the first five in our party of seven entered, we were immediately greeted, and then seated at one of the better tables.
To start, I opted for a Chopin martini straight up. Perfect! For an entree, I had the Filet, paired with a big, fat Cab, i.e. a glass of Charles Krug. The filet was prepared at a perfect medium rare. Service. Again, perfect. Our server, Geoff was a true professional. He'd match up with any fine dining employee at any fine dining establishment.
It has been probably 3-4 years since I've dined at this particular Ruth's Chris. It was nice to see that they've remodeled, as the restaurant / bar was kind of outdated from what I recall. Nevertheless, perfect environment, paired with perfect food & service will guarantee a return when I'm in Indy again next month!
My favorite steak house! Â The steaks are sooooooo delicious here. Â I've never had a bad meal. Â The sides are incredible too (and large).
Make sure you bring your wallet though. Â It's not exactly the cheapest place around. Â But, it's well worth the price.
I suggest this for your next special occasion.
Ahhhh.... Ruth's Chris! This was a business function/grazing event.
I had bits of the following:
Creamed spinach - there's is the best anywhere.
Lyonnaise  potatoes - ditto.
Sweet potato casserole - vanilla and caramel heaven!
Calamari - REALLY good, among the best I have had anywhere.
Stuffed mushrooms - ditto.
Seared Ahi - OK... but not something I'd do here again.
My entrée was Sea Bass. Horrific price at $47 but terribly delicious.
A small glass of berries and cream for dessert was delicious and totally unnecessary!!!
For a special meal it is hard to beat Ruth's Chris.
A friend and I from out of town dined there last night.  They were very accommodating; we had to change our reservations several times as we got side tracked and they had no problem with that.  Our waiter Mike Burns was outstanding.  He was  very knowledgeable, friendly, and prompt.  The atmosphere was upscale while at the same time relaxed.
Parking downtown can be tricky; Â however, the $10 valet parking is highly recommended. Â They also allowed us to leave our car there after we left to walk around downtown a bit. Â
We had a bottle of the Shiraz which goes great with a wonderful steak. Â I enjoyed a T-Bone and my friend had the strip. Â We also had a shrimp cocktail that was delightful. Â The shrimp were absolutely huge.
The place is way to tight and I always seem like I have been jammed in a closet. The rep is much greater then the place! Number 1 it's a chain and it's a good one but a chain none the less! The steaks are good and the sides are huge. I have always felt that I was get service based on the day I was there, and not for my return, I believe that a place that is trying to get you hooked for return after return is the staff that is doing it job, food is food but a great staff is hard to come by. The other Ruth Chris is a bigger place and I DON'T FEEL AS JAMMED.
Remember to eat well and live well! And please no chain's!
A fun place to go during the combine. Â The bar is hopping! Â Can rub shoulders with all sorts of NFL players, coaches, agents. Â A better atmosphere than St. Elmo's. Â Great service too!
Steaks are served on piping hot plates and are always melt in your mouth good. Â Side dishes are delicious also.
You can't go wrong with either the surf or the turf.
Damn. Ruth's Chris makes a mean filet, served up on a fiery plate full of butter. Mmmhhmmm! To me, this is the best steak house in town - I'd Ruth's Chris for the food, the atmosphere and the service over what you'll get at St. Elmo any day. Sure, the prices make it a special occasion restaurant if you're in my tax bracket, but you won't be disappointed with what you'll experience at Ruth's Chris!
Review Source:So, I like the food at Ruth's Chris, besides one of my chef friend's refusal to pay $5-plus for a side of potato or broccoli. But every time I've had scallops here, they've been cooked perfectly, not rubbery--a feat, even for fine dining restaurants.
I like this downtown location so much more than the northside one. Lots of Indianapolis big wigs made this a watering hole stop, and all say hello to each other around the bar. The piano guy is right in the middle of the action. Best of all, sometimes they'll give you free chips--though, admittedly, the chips are often undercooked. The garlicky sauce they come with is good though. Expect to pony up for drinks, except on certain happy hour days, when martinis go for less than two digits.
Ruth's Chris has some of the best service I've seen in an upscale chain restaurant. Â This is the second location that I've been to, and I've been nothing but impressed with the quality of their service.
Had dinner here with my family to celebrate my sister's high school graduation. Â Forgot that it was Memorial Day weekend and thus race day, but since we ate early, the place was still pretty dead. Â Didn't start to see the race fans until we were out the door around 7 pm.
They make a mean piece of filet. Â Served on a searing hot plate with butter and parsley, it doesn't get much better than that. Â Their au gratin potatoes are fantastic. Â The little French baguettes are served with glorious butter. Â Dessert is great. Â Their chocolate lava cake is hands down the best I've had. Â They nailed the perfect mix of cake and soft chocolately goodness. Â Had a bite of their cheesecake as well. Â It's definitely not a standard NY style cheesecake, but still very good. Â They brought out my sister a plate of chocolate covered strawberries as a congrats gift, a nice touch. Â Their cosmos are strong. Â Beware!
Yes, it's expensive, but it's also good. Â It's a nice place to take a larger group who isn't horribly inventive when it comes to their food choices. Â Everything is pretty solid and always good.
This place literally changed my life. Literally.
Back in, oh, 1996, I think it was... I came to Indy for a reunion celebration of the ABA (American Basketball Association). Anyway, I had a great time with one of my best friends in the world (Mason) and we were just kind of chillin' out most of the time. Well, anyway...
On the last night we were hanging out in the lobby with Dr. J, George Gervin, Bob Costas and some of the other guys (well, we weren't 'with' them... but we were in the same lobby!) and we overheard them talking about where they'd go to dinner. Dr. J suggested Ruth's Chris. They all agreed. We said 'F it!"
I'd never been to a steakhouse. Growing up, I thought that Denny's was fine dining (to be fair, it used to be better); I had the steak. It changed my life. I have never looked back. I can't really accurately describe what an impact it had on me.
This place has great beef, great sides and great desserts. The only draw-back is that it's a chain and is a little sterile because of it. Whatever. It's great.
I bet if this same exact restaurant was put in an alley somewhere and called Joe's Hole in the Wall Steaks, my buddy Jared (see review below) would have been raving like an ecstasy addict. The place is top notch! The service is fantastic (as you can always count on from Ruth's Chris) and the fillet makes me thank God every day that I'm alive. Ask the waiter for a glass of the best red wine there is and pound a few of them while you devour a steak that will give you life again.
Review Source:Ruth Chris's is delicious but slightly overpriced in my humble opinion. Â The cuts of steak are huge and slathered in juice and butter, and the the sides are equally enormous. Â The baked potatoes are the size of footballs.
Ruth Chris's isn't bad for an evening if you'd like to impress a group and you want to keep your food choices conservative. Â It's everything you expect your typical 4 star steakhouse to be, and nothing more.
