This restaurant was the most interesting I discovered in all of Seattle. Located in Capital Hill in a very unique free standing building you'll fine some of the best modern Mexican food I've ever had (and I'm from Arizona). The fajita bowl was over the top delicious and the creamed corn served along side rice and beans was the best I've ever tasted - my goodness. After dinner - pop next door to The Montana for a Pickle Back (you'll thank me).
Review Source:I wish I could love The Saint, but I have experienced and heard stories from close, trusted friends of being discriminated against and treated as less-than by the white staff here. Â The stories range from being seated at the smallest table possible in the very back of the bar to being ignored for upwards of 15 minutes before receiving any service. Â Overall the The Saint can provide you with a delicious cocktail, which is absolutely necessary to dull the overwhelmingly unwelcoming experience.
Review Source:I have a soft spot in my heart for the Saint. Â Many a tequila flight has led to crazy nights and very, very painful mornings. Â I've seen the Saint wreck, initiate, and rekindle relationships. Â I usually always get the same things (some spin on a margarita, ceviche, and the steak). Â But they have (recently?) added an "Alambre" to their menu that is really good. Â Yay Seattle.
... yay.
If you're looking for tequila in Seattle, this is the place you need to be!
Their tequila menu can speak for itself! As someone who though they hated tequila (I know, I know- sacrilege!) I was surprised to find that I liked quite a few of the drinks they have on the menu! The Mango Hermano is one of my favorite drinks period (not just a favorite tequila drink!) I've become obsessed with mango margaritas this summer and LOVE spicy things and finally they made a tequila love child in one glass and it's named the mango hermano! It's spicy, fruity and as all the drinks are at The Saint- heavy handed on the tequila! How can you go wrong! Try the flight if you're not sure of what one drink to get or want to sample a few before choosing one to stick with. The Arquero is also a great drink- refreshing cucumber and delicious ginger beer but it still has that kick from the jalapeno.
The service is great- we love to sit at the bar and their bar tenders are always fun to talk to and very helpful in suggesting drinks for you! They dj their own music and it's always a fun mix!!
As for the food, We're HOOKED on their amazing fresh guacamole, served with a large basket of chips and three amazing salsas. The habanero and the mango jalapeño salsa are my favorite but pack a punch so be ready for some spice. The fajitas were ridiculously delicious! Whatever sauce they marinate, cook and serve them in must be laced with a little "something something" because I have NO idea how it can be THAT delicious! The rice and beans they serve are reminiscent of the type you remember from childhood Mexican restaurants only WAY better! The fajitas are also served with a little side of corn succotash that with flavors that mixed perfectly with the smoky sauce of the steak fajitas. Hands down on the top three for what my "last meal" would be! Â
The only "not 5 start" part of the review was the ceviche. It was "good", but overpriced and I have no desire to order it again. Which is saying something because I LOVE ceviche!
This southern guy's go-to choice for Mexican food in the area. The tequila selection alone is worth going for (if that strikes your fancy) -- but the food? Always fresh and wonderful. The salsas are great, the tacos are heavenly (though sometimes a little soggy), and the atmosphere is always comfortable.
Review Source:Went here last week while visiting a friend and it definitely started my vacation off on the right foot. This tiny tequila bar and restaurant is perfect for a happy hour after work, or somewhere to stop at on the way home after hitting up a couple bars for a quick bite and another drink.
We ordered:
Ceviche
Carne asade tacos Â
Mole tacos
Bloody Maria (their version of a Bloody Mary)
Strawberry Margarita
Old and Nutty
I would go back for the ceviche, strawberry margarita and the bloody Maria. I've never enjoyed a bloody Mary but their version was right up my alley. Had a bit more spice than normal and I enjoyed that there wasn't the harsh aftertaste of vodka. Strawberry margarita was rich in acid and the sweetness of the strawberries balanced with the tequila perfectly. Ceviche was fantastic - perfect bite to go along with tequila based beverages.
Pricing was great as we were there for the happy hour, staff was friendly and the atmosphere was fun and mellow.
Hot tip - if you want a sweet koozie order a beer and a shot. Also make sure to try their hot sauce if you're into a bit of spice. They make it in house and it's delicious.
My husband and I always forget about this place since there are so many other great Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood, but we decided to go there last night to try it out. When we walked in, we couldn't tell if we should wait to be seated or just seat ourselves, since there was no sign and no host, so we just sat at an empty table. We sat there for at least ten minutes and were completely ignored, despite the fact that the place wasn't busy and the waitress helped the table right next to us. No one brought us menus or water. It was pretty ridiculous.
I had to actually lock eyes with a server before she finally came over, only to immediately tell us, "Sorry guys, this table's reserved." There was a "Reserved" sign on the long table next to ours, but nothing to indicate that ours was also reserved. I said, "Oh, we didn't know, since there was no sign," and she said "Yeah, sorry, you can always come to see us," in this chastizing tone, like we were just supposed to know we had to flag them down to get service. I was so annoyed by this time that we decided to go somewhere else despite the fact that there were other tables available to sit at. For a place that bills itself as a Social Club, the staff seems pretty anti-social.
We wound up going to La Cocina Oaxaquena around the corner, which had very friendly, attentive service and awesome food. Like I said, there are so many other great places on the Hill that I would not reward such bad service by trying The Saint again.
This place is BOMB. But be warned, it's not a Mexican restaurant - it's a tequila bar (I guess they may serve other liquors too, but I never bothered to ask) with Mexican tapas.
With that said, I highly recommend this place for happy hour or a very drunken dinner. Four stars instead of five because chips and salsa aren't complimentary (and they really should be if you're going to be pumping me full of tequila).
Lamb Tacos!!!!!! Tinga De Res!! Everything here is amazing. My boyfriend loves the Ceviche. Service can be a little crummy on weekends, sometimes they seem a little understaffed. The food makes up for it. Try one of the infused tequilas, they're pretty good. Some people complain of the lay-out, but I really like it. Every seat feels cozy and private.
Review Source:We stopped by The Saint on a Saturday around 5 so it was pretty slow. We ordered off the HH menu and were pleased with most everything. The carne asada tacos were delish, flavorful and tender. The ceviche was decent but the masa cake overwhelms the dish, you taste corn not fish. We also ordered the black beans and corn mash, the beans were great and the corn almost was. It was too sweet, I wanted to taste more of the pepper that the menu stated it had in it. Drinks were tasty as well, I had a pretty standard margarita, my husband had the michelada. I ended up ordering a michelada for the second round because I preferred it to my cocktail. Overall a very nice early dinner.
Review Source:I can not say enough about The Saint. Â I usually go for happy hour, and enjoy the delicious small plates, and the margaritas! Â Fresh and wonderful! Â If you do go for happy hour, consider the "secret" happy hour item, which is a shot of tequila with a Tecate chaser, and you get to keep The Saint beer cozy! Â Went for actual dinner on Tuesday, the place was packed and the one server was working her ass off, she earned every penny of the 25% tip I left. Â All was delicious!
Review Source:Pretty decent food, if not a bit too spicy. The drinks are great...their Margaritas are very tasty. They've also got a really great selection of Tequilas. I've only ever had the small plates from the HH/Tapas menu, so I am not sure what it's like for dinner. Everyone is always really friendly and it's a nice place to go if you're looking for something a bit different than the typical Cap Hill burger/American food fare. Start with happy hour and some delicious drinks and take it from there.
Review Source:We went here last night for happy hour. The restaurant layout is a bit strange, with a bar area that is immediately adjacent to some dining tables (you'll see what I mean if you end up here). We were hoping to land a table but things were so crowded at 6 PM that we decided to just take some seats at the bar.
We got 4 items: the gorditas, the nachos, the mole, and the ceviche. In total these cost under $30 and they were all pretty exceptional. The only item that was a bit mediocre was the mole. The nachos were delicious, only lacking a meat option for those that want something more hearty.
Despite the restaurant being utter madness for an early Friday evening, our bartender/waiters were attentive and topped off our waters regularly. Really enjoyed this restaurant and would return!
I've only been once but was pleased and I'll probably be back soon. Got a Vainilla, a vanilla infused tequila. It was enjoyably spicy and very vanilla-y. I'd get it again if I didn't want to try some more drinks.
Ate some flautas right before the kitchen closed that were also pretty good. Some folks were celebrating a birthday and were kind enough to share some chips that made me regret not ordering some -- they're kinda thick, how I like them.
It's a building with lots of candles, dimly lit, and disco music for some reason but I didn't mind that at all. The kitchen closed at 11 on Wednesday but the bartender mentioned it closes at 12 Thursday - Saturday, at least for the time being.
Very disappointing experience overall.
CONS
-subpar / less than average food
-poor service
-very overpriced
-excessively dark lighting (our waitress actually fell UP the stairs next to our table, due to no visibility. Â I also had to hold my cellphone up to my meal to see what it was I was eating)
-limited vegetarian options
PRO
-cute decor.
Mmmm. Very well balanced tequila cocktails. Fantastic options for $6 drinks on happy hour. I had no idea this was a restaurant/bar. I have walked by it so many times, and only the color of the building has caught my attention. My first guess would have been an art boutique.
I haven't tried any food here, but the according to the drinks and vibe I really like it. I was anxious that my Mañana was going to be too sweet, mostly because of the Blue Curacao. Yes, I got a blue drink. And it was damn good, the house-made sour and elderflower liqueur complimented the tequila, served up. It was delicious. My partner got the Honeysuckle, and this also was great. I can't wait to come back here and try some more drinks and probably some snacks. Will update with a food review.
Great spot to meet friends for drinks! Â Come for the great happy hour with fantastic cocktails and delicious happy hour plates. Â I can't wait to come back!
Allow some time for parking when coming here. Â Parking can be a bit of a pain in this area of Cap hill but don't fret; be patient and you will soon be rewarded with some delicious tequila!
I wanted so badly to like this place- super cute decor and a mean looking drink list. But alas...
1. Overpriced food that was nothing to write home about. I had the mole tacos which were 'meh' and my dinner was luke-warm when it arrived.
2. Sub-par service (I get you want to turn this table but, for the love of Pete, ask if we want anything else before putting the check on our table).
3. The tables are super close, so we got to practically sit on the laps of the 2 folks next to us who sounded to be having the most painful first date ever.
4. I feel like some gratis chips/salsa would be in order, considering how much dinner cost. If Azteca can do it, surely this place can.
The drinks might be decent but there are definitely better places to get (affordable) Mexican on the hill.
Awesome place Dont know how authentic it is but it's right up my alley of Mexican food - full of flavor and balanced (not too saucy, meaty, cheesy, greasy). The happy hour is fabulous. We ordered 3 margaritas, the flight, and three appetizer dishes (which are filling) plus guacamole for $70. The guacamole is delicious and they give you a lot. The mini gorditas al puerco were the favorite (slightly sweet, slow cooked pork comes on beds of crunch masa rounds and served with hot salsa). The mole tacos and enchiladas are also good. Beans and rice are good too! Everything is!
I haven't even started on the awesome tequila too. They use good stuff and the drinks are strong. The Blue curacao, the strawberry infused, the jabanero, and the house margaritas were all favorites.
The Saint is what happens when three writers drunkenly detour their way around Capitol Hill in search of one more drink. When you cross onto Olive and don't know which way to turn, the right bar will show up at exactly the right time.
Eleanor, "Let's go someplace none of us have been before."
Forrest, "There's pictures of bullfighters on the walls!"
I remember it something like this:
Forrest, "We'll take three tequilas."
Bartender, (scoffs), "I have 86 tequilas."
Us, (awe, amazement, embarrassment)
The production value at the Saint had me enthralled. Every drink was poured in perfect proportions, with fresh-cut cucumber, mint, and lime smashed and shaken and otherwise blended into something delicious and real. We only had time to order a single cocktail. Next time we'll dive into those 86 tequilas.
Great little place to go have some good food and some good drinks.
Location: its pretty easy to get to.. cabbed it from belltown and was perfect.. looking for parking in that area might be a little rough.. not sure, don't usually go hangout there.
The restaurant/bar is a little small so make sure that you make reservations if you want to get a table or you might have to wait a little.
Food: we started off with the Guacamole and chips and the ceviche both really good. but I think the guac was def a better choice.
for dinner I had the fajitas as it was recommended by our waitress and she was right they were delicious, they bring you a wooden block with 3 little glass bowls that have 1. Rice 2. Mashed up corn? 3. Beans and then another plate with a little "pot" looking thing with the meat and then there are the small tortilla bread.
Dessert: didnt have any as I was full but they do have churros.. might have to try them next time.
Overall its a great little place to go have dinner and drinks.
Next time I visit Seattle, The Saint will be my first stop. As others have mentioned, there's a great happy hour unitl 7pm. $6 drinks and appetizers, which are both great. I enjoyed the nachos and the yuca fritters. The restaurant & bar certainly lives up to its billing - tequila salvation - as there is a good selection of delicious tequilas as well as terrific cocktails.
And enough cannot be said about The Saint's vibe. The blue stucco exterior is welcoming, and the bi-level inside is cozy, friendly and romantic. A great place for date night or hanging out with friends. And the bathroom is HUGE.
Go there now.
Regarding the nachos: they now feature plenty of guac, but missing the sour cream. Â And although they are DELICIOUS, maybe some of us enjoy sour cream.. ahh, sweet, cold sour cream.
So I love the Saint. Â It's such a great date spot. Â It seems like there's a live chamber group playing somewhere, but alas it's just their awesome taste in ambiance. Â And you can hear the people you're with, which is great. Â It's sort of dim lighting, but not creepy - and this place is "un-swanky" enough to feel comfortable. Â However, still veddy nice!
I love the black-and-white artwork on the walls. Â I love their cute, relaxed servers. Â I LOVE THAT THEIR HAPPY HOUR GOES UNTIL 7PM!!! Â At 6:41 you can order a cheap cocktail, $6 mini enchiladas or chicken tacos, and I appreciate it.
I shall end this review where I started: their nachos. Â I ate at The Saint yesterday (found parking right in front, BOO-YAH) and I am still craving their nachos. Â Even though we ate them yesterday. Â In fact... we girls might have ordered two. Â Okay yes we did, and there was not a regret to be had.
Go to The Saint for fun, fresh (extended!) Happy Hour or for a romantic and yet laid-back date.
Dinner 10-27-12 (very rainy day)
THE GOOD:
Excellent food & Ambiance.
THE BAD:
Tortilla to toppings ratio
THE LOWDOWN:
All the food was great. We started off with chips, salsa and guac. All of which were great, they had spice that was present but not overpowering. The guac was really good and fresh.
I had the fish tacos which came out heaped onto the tortillas. (No extra tortillas, 1per taco, 3 tacos per plate) With an accompaniment of beans and rice which were packed with flavor. Everything was complimentary and worked together great.
The place was halloweened up and had cool photos all over the walls. The colors are nice and make this place standout. While it wasn't crowded last night it was a lil weird that they had everyone sit right by each other instead of letting each party have a little bit of space.
We will be back....don't be put off by the color or the name - this place is outstanding.
hubby Yelped out a mexican joint and swore this would change my low opinion of the cuisine. so off we went in search of this quaint looking capitol hill corner. Shaped like a slice of blue cake, finding the place on foot was quite fun; but find it we did.
place has an understated but casual feel, food menu was small(always a good sign) and the feel of the place is undeniably cool. cocktails were bang on target and the menu was perused in a much happier mood. The tequila menu is about 3 pages long and promises much.
The signature Mole Con Pollo was not available "on-the-bone" and my disappointed hubby was told it was available taco-style "which is exactly the same". this was met by a stony "No' by hubby after which we went all veggie with yucca fries(bleh, just get the chips+3 salsas).
The rest of the food was just "spectacular"!! the frijoles were divine and the enchilada with vegetables was enough for us to start shouting "ole".
2 very good cocktails, very good food and 2 very full and very satisfied customers trooped out, swearing a swift return.
PS: waiting to update to 5 stars once Mole Con Pollo becomes available as stated.
Fake ass overpriced Mexican food. Â They have a good tequila selection, though. Â And they can't eff up chips and salsa so I'm good with that. Â Also, if you spend 10 dollars here, you can get a stamp that gets you in for free at Havana Social Club, which is the main reason why my ladies and I start here on a weekend night.
Dimly lit and cool, and sometimes quiet enough to hold a conversation. Â if only their food was up to par with the decor and environment.
I used to love this place, but it has gone really downhill in the past 6 months...they've lost a loyal customer. Â This place has dropped from an A- to a D+.
***BUYER BEWARE*** First they overcharged us for 4 independent items - very sneaky - fortunately we noticed since we picked items that were supposed to be rounded up. Â I bet they make several hundred dollars extra each week by overcharging everyone with very few people noticing.
Second, they no longer let you 'mix and match' different types of tacos like they used to.
Third, they didn't have several items on the already small menu.
Finally, half the tortilla chips were crushed - but they did give us a second basket without charging us (that was surprising).
The food was a B-, but the sketchy bill dropped them to a D+.
