Coming from Chicago, we have gone on a quest for a great Gyro sandwich.
Sebastian's came highly recommended, but after eating their sandwich, I can say I am disappointed.
On the good side, the meat was good, moist and not over cooked, which is a common problem. Also, the pita was soft and tasted fresh...many times they are dry and break apart.
The problem: these sandwiches are so small I could eat three (and I am not that big), there were more tomatoes than meat.
Very disappointed.
Plus note: THEY ONLY TAKE CASH!!!
Sebastian's has been a family favorite since  I was growing up right down the street. We used to come here with my grandma and grandpa. My favorite is always a Gyro with all the fixings and a fry and for dessert bakavla.
Alex is the owner and "Chef" and runs the restaurant with his wife Sue and his daughters. The restaurant usually is closed a few weeks during the year so he can go back to Greece and catch up with his family.
If you haven't been yet, this is a must visit for anyone in Cincinnati.
Just beware they only take Cash!
So I had never had a gyro before. Greek had just never sounded appealing to me and now I feel quite ashamed of myself as to have missed out on this delicious food my whole life. My friend ended up bringing me here for lunch and I had a run of the mill plain gyro with feta and from first bite I was hooked. I must say that I was not expecting such awesomeness on a pita but have since rescinded my view and shall be returning very very soon for some more. Oh and they are very friendly and its great service!
Review Source:I have been going to Sebastian's for over 25 years... it is hands down the best Gyro in all of Greater Cincinnati. Even though it is small and can get very crowded at lunch it is worth the wait... I lived on the West Side for 29 years and then moved to NKY 10 years ago..... If I want a Gyro I make the drive over the river and do not settle for anything less!!!!!
Review Source:Hmm... so, I really wanted to love this place. In fact, I think I had already made my mind up that this was going to be a 5 star review when I saw that they cook their meat on the spit --- like it's supposed to be done.
Buuuut... after eating the gyro, I had trouble even giving them three stars. The problem was the tzatziki. The gyro meat was delicious actually. The tzatziki, on the other hand, was bland and runny. It had the consistency of slightly spoiled milk with no traces of cucumber or anything else. This was my first time there, so I might have just had bad luck with their sauce today, but I'm not so sure that I'll be going back to give them another shot.
Areti's gyros in Findlay market are a much safer bet. Oh well...
I have been eating Sebastian's for almost my entire lifetime.... and those years are beginning to add up. Â Sebastian's hasn't changed one bit in all that time. Â Always a homey family feel with good quality food. Â
I really can only recommend a small portion of the menu, because why would you go here and not order the gyro meat. Â I like that you can order the meat only and aren't forced to get the sandwich. Â Of all the Mediterranean restaurants I have ever gone to, they have the best gyro meat. Â The Greek fries are always served burn-your-mouth hot and liberally covered in seasoning salt. Â
The restaurant itself is nothing spectacular to look at. Â You push your way thought a crowded seating area to order at the counter. Â Find yourself a seat at a rickety table. Â And wait for your little piece of Greek heaven to arrive at your table. Â This is fast food Mediterranean at its best! Â Prices are very reasonable as well, though if you order the meat and not the sandwich be prepared for it to be a little pricey, but a good portion.
Run, don't walk, to the West Side to try this institution out.
Hands down one of the best establishments I have EVER been to. Â The authentic gyros are super delicious and are very generous portions. Â The cucumber sauce is yummy, too! Â Next time I'll have to order feta cheese on my gyro. Â I also would recommend the spanakopita as a side item. Â The light cheese flavor and spinach inside of the flaky pastry is so good.
The inside is very small and they tend to get busy during lunch time. Â Alex and his employees are amazing! Â They're super friendly and you can tell that they truly care about their customers (repeat and new, alike). Â I can't wait to go back!
Note: They are cash only.
Notoriously the best gyros on the west side. Â Ask any west sider who has the best gyros in the city, and they'll tell you Sebastians. Â I usually order the Greek Salad with meat, which includes a pita bread, with extra feta. Â
Don't let the appearance of the place scare you. Â It has a run down diner appearance. Â Not a lot of indoor dining, and overall, and is dive-ish in appearance. Â I stick with carry-outs. Â
Sebastian's food is five stars. Â Appearance and atmosphere is below-average...thus the carry-out recommendation. Â Price is right.
I can see why Sebastian's is appealing. It's quick, it's cheap, and it's pretty good. I was neither blown away nor too disappointed; it was simply down the line, middle of the road A-OK.
As many people have pointed out, this is more of a gyro stand than a restaurant. You order at a counter and go, grab your food and bring it over to a booth. The gyro is about $5 and you'll have it in no time. It comes with no sides or drinks, so those are extras. They also only take cash, which is kind of annoying. And by kind of, I mean really.
Still, the food was warm and tasty and obviously a recipe that's been passed down from generation to generation. And it was pretty good. Not the best gyro I've ever had, but delicious all the same
This is a family run establishment, and that's true down to its core - the owners are family, the staff is family, everyone there knows each other like they are family. This is a place where they clearly get to know you if you come in time in and again.
I wouldn't go out of my way to stop here again, but if I was in the neighborhood and needed a quick gyro fix, I wouldn't be against going.
I'm Polish by heritage but I sometimes I feel like I ought to be Greek. Man, I love gyros. As far as I'm concerned, Sebastians has the best in town and some of the best I've had anywhere. Like reviewer Gigi F. wrote, tons of meat, tomatoes and wonderful tzatziki sauce. The "Greek" fries are just regular fries with some Greek seasoning sprinkled on, but they're prepared perfectly: golden brown and crispy on the outside, and tender and moist in the center.
This is what a Greek diner is supposed to be like.
So, I'm not Greek. Â But my cousins on my Dad's side have an aunt who is Greek. Growing up, "Aunt" Mel (short for Melpone) introduced us to the wonderful world of tasty Greek foods like baklava, soulvaki and gyros. I came to wish that I was Greek so I could eat like that all the time. Â Flash forward many years and I have a Greek student in one of my classes. After his demonstration speech on how to make keftedes (Greek meat balls), I asked him where he goes for Greek food in Cincinnati. Â Without hesitation, he said, "Sebastian's." Â
Since then, I've been going to Sebastian's whenever I feel like my tzatziki levels are getting low. Â A small gyro (no tomatoes) is my usual order and I split an order of Greek fries with my husband. Â Sometimes, we skip the fries and get the spanakopita or tyropita instead. Â We're usually too full for dessert, but may get some baklava for later on. Â Is it a full service Greek restaurant? Â No. Â Is it the best Greek diner in Cincinnati? Â Damn straight.
Go to Sebastian's and experience the BEST GYRO you will ever have the pleasure of eating!! For 20 years, I've tried to find a better gyro, and it just DOES NOT EXIST!! Lots of meat, fresh tomato and onion, and the sauce is perfect. Â I always order extra sauce! Â The Greek fries have just the right kick, and I dip mine in the sauce too. Â Great baklava! Â The only reason my sister cried when she moved out of this neighborhood is because it takes her longer to drive to Sebastians! Â YUM!
Review Source:Here's why I like Sebastian's. Â it's a good, quick, affordable, non-restaurant chain lunch on the westside.
You're not going to see Greeks laughing or dancing or breaking plates here. Â By the register is an old picture of the owner. Â He's young, handsome and fit. Â He's dressed in a military uniform and has a look that says "I know 43 ways to kill you and I'm thinking of number 21 right now." Â Standing behind the counter carving meat off the cone, he still has that look. Â
But...hand the cashier about $5 and you'll be holding a serviceable gyro within about 4 minutes of walking in the door. Â For lunch, that's often all I want.
I had read about this restaurant here on Yelp and put into my GPS on my cellphone. Â So when I had time while in Cincinnati I checked it out.
And I'm happy I did. Â The food was great! I knew it was my kind of place the moment I walked in. Â There was a line and there was one girl taking the money and one man making the food. Â I happily waited in line for give my order. Â I got a small Greek Salad and Gyro. Â I got my salad when I paid at the counter and the gal told me she'd bring me my Gyro when it was done. Â I sat down among the regulars and ate me fresh and delicious salad. Â And then came my Gyro. Â It was outta sight. Hot, Fresh and made to order. Â I love the bread. Â Not that "pita wannabe" but real Arabic bread. Â
I wanted another sandwich but I was too full. Â I still have their address in my phone and plane on going back.
Fantastic place for greek food, and the portions are abundant, contrary to the first review on this restaurant. The gyros have so much meat in them, they are exploding out of the pita and tin fold. The baklava is to die for. The prices are reasonable, and haven't gone up for years.
I first started going to Sebastian's when I worked at Philipp's Swim Club as a teen, and always come back. Family-owned and operated for over 20 years, this place is a staple on the west side.
Oh, and it is a Greek restaurant, the first reviews should look on the old-school menu, they have lots of greek food items.
Must have: Gyro with a slice of baklava.
Let's call a spade a spade. This is not, as Cincinnati Magazine calls it, a Greek restaurant. It is a gyro stand plain and simple. This family run joint has been around for some time, and it's a quite popular takeout joint, but there's not much else here beyond gyros, baklava, and a simple Greek salad. The staff is friendly but not without a little attitude - after we ordered a salad, we asked if they had any olives or hummus. "You get olives with the salad, but we're Greek, not Lebanese. Hummus is Lebanese." An honest mistake on our part, but you have to make a pretty good gyro to help us recover from the ignorant and embarrassed feeling we were left with. Unfortunately, Sebastian's is just so-so. It's not great, but it's not awful either. Service was super quick, but portions are on the light side. Still searching for a great gyro in town, right now the most decent one I've found is Chicago Gyros is Clifton.
