Nothing special in my opinion. Â Good Chinese food, a little over priced, but you have to pay for the ambiance. Â My wife and I usually do the $8.88 right size right price entrees, so the tab isn't too high. Â I am trying to lose some weight, so my options are relatively limited, as with most Chinese restaurants, most items are fried. Â The Chinese Chicken Salad is a pretty flavorful choice and saves on some of the calories. Â All said and done, we go to Castleton Mall enough to say we will be be patrons again, but I would still prefer P.F. Changs of the higher end Chinese restaurant chains around town.
Review Source:Oddly enough I liked the restaurant since I'm normally a bit put off by the whole category of chain Asian restaurants. I guess I was luckily enough to avoid the gong?
First off, expectation management. For a place like Stir Crazy, the food here is never going to like real Asian food. Â This of course doesn't mean it won't be tasty and delicious, rather that 'tasty" and "delicious" will mean stir-fried and salty (you many have your own definitions, these just happen to be mine).
My friend and I opted for the all-you-can-eat Market Bar. for $8.99 (lunch, dinner is $10.95 which is still a great deal). You tell your server your meat (chicken or beef) and carb (rice or noodle with 3 options for each) selection, get handed a veggie and sauce bowl and then have fun customizing your dish. Highly recommend the Shanghai noodles.
The concept of Stir Crazy's Market Bar is basically BD's Mongolian BBQ (which is horrible) only done well. Your selection of veggie/pasta aren't being sacrificed for protein, there's more sauce and choices of it, and your food is beater cooked and favored as it isn't cooked on a giant flashy girdle.
I love Asian food, so when our neighbor recommended this place, we we'd give it a try. Â The fact that it's in the mall should have tipped me off...
We had the dim sum to start and it was kinda weird. Â The potstickery type things were gooey and stuck to the dish. Â Ick.
We both went for the stir fry. Â Not quite as cool as Mongolian BBQ where they cook your meat and veggies on a HUGE griddle.
Overall, I felt the place was overpriced and not that great.
There were several great things about this restaurant. My girlfriend and I dined here on the 19th of January, and had a reasonably good experience.
First the atmosphere. I loved it. The ambiance is awesome, perfect lighting, great decor, the art and sculpture is pretty great to look at. I did not visit the bar, other than to try to catch a game score on the T.V.'s, but it looked kinda small and not very easy to visit.
The service was good, but somewhat forced, our server seemed uncomfortable and kind of nervous. It may be due to the unacceptably long greet they must deliver. I was bored and a little uncomfortable by the end of the long rant. Our server did not stop back too often, which I like, he kept a good amount of distance, but stoped back often enough to keep us happy.
We did all courses for this visit, starting with a Chicken Potsticker Appetizer, which was good, the chicken was well seasoned without being over bearing and the sauces on the side were very complimentary, a sweet Hoisin and a slightly spicy scallion soy sauce. Next we had a cup of the Hot and Sour Soup, it was noted as a slightly spicy item, but I found it was not even slightly spicy. The broth was very good and the ingredients were well balanced.
Now for the main course. The portions were quite abundant without being too much. My girlfriends Sweet and Sour Chicken was nicely sour with a great pineapple flavor but lacked any real balanced sweetness, lots of sour, not enough sweet. However it was well cooked and the accompanying rice dish was well cooked too. My dish of Vietnamese Lemongrass Pork Loin was another pretty good dish with a sauce problem. The Pork was grilled to absolute perfection very juicy and extremely tender, perfect. The coconut rice that it was served with was mildly sweet and just as wonderful. The problem came with a lemongrass sauce that was just sadly over the top. Too lemony, too earthy, and just a bold in your face destroyer of a perfect cut of pork. So, I scraped it off and did well with my pork and coconut rice.
Desert was a Banana Wonton dish that was a interesting take on a bananas foster. Cinnamon wontons with a slice of banana and a carmel sauce with vanilla ice cream, very good very sweet. Imagine a Taco Bell Cinnamon twist with a banana in it. And the coffee was great too.
Overall I was happy. If it had not been for some pretty bad sauces I would have been completely satisfied. I will go back, mostly to try the fresh bar, similar to the B.D.'s Mongolian Barbecue concept.
Stir Crazy was average. Â Not bad but not great either. Â We both had the make your own stir frys where you get to pick your ingredients then they cook it up for you. Â We also had the chicken pot stickers. Â Those were very good. Â
I'll try it again and perhaps order off the main menu to see if the food is any better.
Great food, great service. Â I loved it so much I had to go back the next day with friends!
It's an interesting take on stir fry. Â You're given the option to fill a wok with all of the veggies you can fit in it from a salad-bar like setup. Â You then pick your sauce, and a meat and starch selection, and they wok it up right in front of you.
