I'm sad about this place. Â The food has gone so far downhill recently. Â The service has always been great, and the bar area has plenty of roomy bar stools. Â But the food is bland at best, and some days it smells like a sewer. Â It's sad, years ago I had the best sea bass ever, don't get that anymore it's no good now. Â Drinks are not generous and expensive.
Review Source:I went with a larger group. Â They were so kind to add 20% gratuity. Â Now, I have heard of 18%, but for 20% the service should be great. Â This was not the case. Â It took the server over 10 minutes before he took our drink order. Â It was another 15 minutes before he took our food order. Â I went the whole 2 hour meal with only one drink refill. Â The items that I asked for on the side came on my sandwich. Â When I asked for a separate check, he rudely replied that he could only do four checks for the group (I was only #1). Â The food was nothing to write home about. Â I am in the area pretty frequently, and I will not be returning.
Review Source:A mixed bag. Some food here was great. Others not so much.Tilapia was fresh, tasty and well prepared. Prime rib was outstanding, a nice cut of meat and done perfectly as ordered. They also do well with burgers seems like their strong suit is meat. This is a nice local bar/restaurant that has been there forever. But I gotta say $13 for a Manhattan is justified at some upscale spots but this isn't one of them.
And that's for rail bourbon. No can do. The last meal there ended with apple pie and ice cream with pie that had the consistency of spitballs dipped in library paste. Awful. Service was youngish and once my wife and I got past being called 'guys' was attentive, courteous and generally excellent. Like I said, a mixed bag.
After many visits, I'm still on the fence about this restaurant. Being a Great Falls resident, I love the convenience. Being a wine-o, I love the wine specials - on our most recent visit, we had a relatively nice Sonoma cab for $30.
However given the opportunity to generate a signicant amount of business from its local audience, I would think that they would want to upscale the food - or at least make it more interesting. Lately, I almost always resort to the burger because other dishes have been bland or unappealing.
The waitstaff is always friendly and goes out of its way to be accomodating but PLEASE upskill the kitchen!!
After terrible experiences at another Great Falls eatery (see my other reviews and figure it out.), The Tavern is a true blessing to the Great Falls dining establishment.
The Missus and I stopped here late one night, about a month, or so, ago. Â The restaurant portion was closed so we sat outside in their small dining area in front of the pub section. Â We just had some drinks and appetizers, but it was good food and the waiter we had was a really nice guy.
Last night we decided to try the place out for a full dinner and see what it was like. Â I admit to being wrong in one respect about their restaurant area. Â I had only seen it once and it looked small with uncomfortable booths. Â Turns out, there's a much larger section of the restaurant in the back with comfortable tables and uncrowded seating.
When we arrived I asked for someplace quiet and instead of getting the typical fake smile and eye roll from the underage tween behind the desk, the plesant young lady smiled assuredly and said "Follow me". Â She took us way in the back and, while not "quiet" it was good enough for conversation.
Our waiter was a young kid, with little personality, but a good waiter nonetheless. Â We sampled a couple appetizers to begin with. Â The mozzarella sticks are very good and they give you quite a lot of them. Â I can't recommend the potato skins as they were over cooked, lacking in cheese and thick enough to be described more as "potato halves" than "potato skins".
I ordered the prime rib and the Missus ordered the Salmon. Â Both of these dishes came with a lot larger portions than we were expecting. Â The sizeable chunk of Salmon the Missus got was impressive and the huge slab o' prime rib I got, laying on a bed of string beans and carrots, was quite filling. Â The "loaded" baked potato I got with the prime rib was, again, lacking. Â They really need to work on their potato cooking skills. Â It was dry and lacking in toppings for a "loaded" BP.
They kept our drinks refilled and otherwise made it a nice evening.
There was live music in the bar, which was a bit distracting, but not detrimental to the evening.  It was a bit humorous, though, that when the singer finished  a song, you'd only hear one person clapping.
Tough crowd.
Today was a good day. Â After several sleepless nights of wondering "Is there ANY good place to eat in Great Falls??", I was finally given an answer. Â Not only is the Tavern at Great Falls probably the only bar in town, but the food is not half bad either! Â I decided not to order a drink, you know since I'm still working, rather I ordered the chicken club sandwich "Tavern Club" I think it was called. Â I was not expecting much since this place seemed to be nothing more than a locals bar in the Beverly Hills equivalent of Virginia. Â I ordered the food for carry-out since I didn't want it spoiled by the smell of smoke and SportsCenter.
To my surprise, the chicken club was actually very tasty and grilled to perfection, the side of fries and sliced pickles were also a nice touch; not that you can really mess up french fries (although that is possible). Â I was very satisfied and will probably come back later this week for a happy hour and have my choice of Dominion Ale or Magic Hat; both of which are on tap! Pretty sweet.
It's about 6pm as I type out this review and I have a semi-smile on my face since my meal 30 minutes ago. Â More importantly, I can rest comfortably knowing that I have discovered flavor in this town that seems devoid of any taste buds. Â Residents of Great Falls: stop drinking that scolding hot tea & coffee for one week and let your taste buds recover so you can see just how bland most of the food around you really is, then go eat dinner or lunch at the Tavern. Â I approve this experiment.
It is a bit sad though, that one of the best tasting food establishments in town is also the same place locals go to get wasted and drown their sorrows. Â I have no problem with that!
Every time I come back from vacation and dinning at some high end resort restaurant, I realize how good the chef and service at the Tavern is.
As a res. of GF for past 10 years, I cannot say enough about THE Tavern. Â We're regular weekly dinners since they opened.
For years, the community was hoping someone would open a restaurant that would cater to the community. Â Casual, yet no compromises to the food menus, service, and wine list. Â
The Tavern is casual enough to drag the "rug rats" after a game with their uniforms...yet upscale enough for a special occasion. Â A little more romantic setting in the back of the restaurant. Â I would say the dinner menu is diverse enough for both adults and kids. Â I think the seafood dishes are superb. Even better than some of the specialty seafood chains. Â I won't mention them by name, but you can find them in Reston and Tysons. Â In general the food preparation and freshness is superb.
Be sure to ask for Connie or simply let Ash (your host) take care of you. Â Thanks again guys, and see you again next weekend.

The service was good and we had a large group, say 12-14, and it wasn't a problem. They were quick and friendly and the atmosphere was nice. Dark wood, cosey. I had the turkey club wrap. It was good and the fries were nice and crispy, but I wouldn't say it was the best thing on their menu. Others had a ruben, crab cake sandwich, etc. They were all good but not great! The apps were pretty good too, the hummus and calamari were very good and the potato skins wern't bad. All in all it was a cute place to go and hang out with friends, especially if you just got done with hiking around Great Falls for the day.
Review Source:Limited horsey-casual ambiance makes this a clean and pleasant space to stop for lunch. This family-friendly restaurant is located in the Great Falls town center to accomodate the locals. The menu has no particular theme, just a variety of salads and basic fare. Â Wraps, sandwiches, (both dip and club) as well as pastas and dinners insure no one will go away hungry. Do not expect gourmet, and you will not be disappointed. Â The food is fresh and the staff is pleasant. Â The prices are reasonable (under $20). Â Nothing too memorable, but it could improve over time.
