This review is long over due. Â I have been going to TNT since they opened. Â This is hands down the best place in San Diego to watch football. Â The entire staff is super nice. Â The happy hour prices aren't the best, but the staff and regulars more than make up for that. Â I've hosted a number of parties here and everyone has a great time. Â I can't wait to host our next fantasy football draft here!
Review Source:Normally, I avoid True North...it use to be super cool but with them removing their dance floor, questionable food and some douchey security...I just wasn't interested anymore. Â Then the bf got a gift card and he wanted to go. Â We went recently and they must have upped their "game"...I had the best peach bellini ever...I'm glad because nowadays...if you aren't doing something special...you don't get my money... ;) well, I did say gift card haha.
Review Source:Just fine. Prices aren't amazing. Little hard to get a pool table on any given night; there are 2. Servers are good at the tables once you begin with a smile; bar staff adequate. Saturday night DJ wouldn't win an award; but he got some booties shaking. Like the star system says, a-ok.
Review Source:Tater tots. Lots of tater tots! The Cu-Banh Mi was the sandwich that jumped out at me so I decided to try it. Cu-Banh Mi? Get it? Though I know this isn't exactly the place where you think you'd try a vietnamese sandwich, I was curious to try this interesting combination. As expected, a solid 'meh'. The sriracha aioli, pickled veggies, and jalapenos were the best part of the sandwich. The meat, bleh. But washing it down with some Wailua Wheat (Kona Brewing Co.) made it a little better.
Standard casual sports bar atmosphere. They were playing 'Coming to America' and 'Independence Day' on their screens (in honor of July 4th? the night we went). That was amusing and random!
I've only been able to enjoy this place on a Thursday night (many years ago). Apparently it was Asian night, but I'm not so sure if it's still the same as it was back then.
This review is based on my experience here on a Sunday afternoon, watching some NBA games with some friends.
Let me tell you. Those tater tots (the loaded carne asada ones) are the devil. They were way too delicious & I couldn't stop eating them for the life of me! There are other meats they can put on the tots, but the waitress recommended carne asada so we went for it. Thank you, waitress. It was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
Other than that, it was just a really decent & relaxing time there. I don't know what it's like at night anymore so hopefully you're all still enjoying that.
Eh it's ok. Come here during happy hour to get a beer on the cheap. It's also good if you want to watch a game or something. There are pool tables, so it's a nice place if you play pool. The food is not that great, I would not come here if you are looking to eat. Come for the drinks. But! if it's not happy hour I would not come.
Review Source:As a North Park resident I have a love/hate relationship with True North. I will go there on a night out with my girlfriends to have some cocktails and dance and even enjoy a Football Sunday when I get there early enough to get a seat by a T.V. but the crowd there can be unbearable some nights and it can take way to long to get a drink.
With to many people and not enough bartenders you walk in sober and walk out sober, the drinks are way overpriced if you ever manage to get one and the food is mediocre at best.
The ambiance can be hit or miss, fights break out there way to often and sometimes it seems like your back in High School only the people who know the staff get served promptly.
With all that said this is still a staple bar in North Park that is frequented by all the locals and the known spot to go to if you decide to go out in North Park, I would still go here once in a blue moon but it wouldn't be on my list of "I have to go here" places.
First, I would like to thank you all so very much for the incredible service and hospitalty that my pub crawl group recieved on Saturday early evening. I couldn't have chose for a better first stop and hope that you all know what an amazing staff you have! :-) This event will definitley bring many back to your establishment!
Review Source:True North rocks !. Not only a good variety of beers ,drinks & sports. The bartenders are friendly & Personable. They always have their A game!. For instance the bartender Will Before I can even ask he has my beer ready for me. Not only is that great anticipation but great customer service. This is my favorite sports bar!. Thanks True North!.
Review Source:I'd give a NO! star if I could. Â I went here to have lunch, food, Â not liquor. Â This was just a few blocks away from my job, I did not think I would need an ID to prove I'm 21 to have food on their outside patio. Â The waitress even asked the manager to stop by and talk to me and he looked directly at us from inside behind the bar and said to the waitress we CANNOT serve you. Â This at 1:30pm unbelievable and they had the nerves to ask if I wanted to place my order to go.
I will never dine at this place even with an ID. Â This is ultimately BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Â I was told it was a bar and only 21 and over are allowed in this establishment w/ID there is no sign on at the front entrance that is noticeable that states that you can only enter 21 w/ID Â Â Â TRUE NORTH YOU SUCK! Â I will tell everyone about your BAD SERVICE.
I don't normally play the race card but after further reading reviews it very much seems like a racial thing was done here. Â WOW! unbelievable treatment.
Rude staff. Â Couldn't tell if an out of state license was valid, even paired with a military ID. Â Got booted trying to get some lunch with a friend with lousy explanations from subpar staff. Â Nothing about the place stands out enough to bring business to it after just one fault. Â North Park has far better to offer.
Review Source:You know a place has nothing going for it when "tater tots," "bartenders," and "happy hour" and the three most mentioned phrases on Yelp. It's like a restaurant with "food," "servers" and "taco tuesday" as its most common descriptors. "Uh so the cool thing about this place is it has tater tots, the bartenders serve you drinks, and it has happy hour." Blah blah blah!
Here's the sad news everyone: There's no more room in PB for douchebags so they built a sanctuary for them in North Park and called it True North. Let's take a minute to admire the inspiring name. So inventive...
Brought to you by the same filthy rich opportunists that brought you a slew of equally tasteless, pedestrian establishments all over San Diego, True North is another shameless scheme to rid the lowest common denominator of their extraneous cash. Go here on a weekend night if you have an affinity for waiting in line for no reason, uninspired dubstep, armband tattoos, sideways baseball hats, getting stabbed in the ass (yes this happened), and getting sassed at by bitchy, vapid hoes. It's a "True" representation of what "North" Park has become--a drain gutter to catch the spillover of human waste from downtown and PB.
Came here for happy hour on a Friday afternoon. Pretty dead but there were a couple of people. The bartenders were okay, hella whatever, BUT she was nice enough to check up on us. Street parking.
PROS:
- Different varieties of beers
-Pretty big bar and has pool tables.
CONS:
-Only $1 off during happy hour on beers and other drinks
-I should've hit up the local breweries instead of here, but it was still cool.
I attended this place on a Friday afternoon during my lunch break and overall was pleased with the experience. We weren't sure what exactly we were looking for when me and a friend were trying to find a place to eat. surprisingly we looked on Urbanspoon and happen to see this place. I breifly read the reveiwson Yelp to see what the ratings looked like and to weigh my pros and cons on stopping. The Yelp fans out there didn't seemed overall impressed considering they only have 3 stars. Thankfully i stopped anyways and was completely satisfied with my experience. The food was good, hot, and served in a very timely manner. i would recommend this place in the future to others and will probably be attending it again considering i work so close.
Review Source:5 stars! If only you could fire that stupid bouncer who actually told me to pull up my pants! I'm serious, he let me in then as I walked in he told me to pull up my pants! I was wearing a belt and I do not sag my pants, I have never been told to pull up my pants before and there was nothing wrong with them, so that pissed me off, I'm nearly 30 years old and I felt very insulted, another time i came in on a rainy day and as i walked in the same stupid bouncer told me to take off my hood as i was already taking it off! My hood was on because it was raining! What a moron... Almost made me leave but thats the only problem they have, now for the place... The bartenders are awesome, the drinks are awesome, the food is awesome! Get the loaded tots with chicken and bacon, you won't be disappointed... Fire that stupid bouncer and this place would be the best spot in North Park
Review Source:Superb service and quality of food and drink have turned me into a true north regular.
Day or night the drinks are strong and the food is restaurant quality. The staff is so nice too!
This bar blends the elements of club, sports bar, restaurant, and neighborhood hang out perfectly.
Most of all though, my FAVORITE thing about this bar is the vibe. I feel at home here, like I'm in a dive, but it is not a dive at all! The people who frequent this joint are just as classy as the decor.
Thank you for being solid true north.
PS
the bouncer other yelpers have referred to as more than rude are right...please get better bouncers true north. you are better than this.
PSS
eat the loaded tots with chicken and bacon if you want to fall in love hard.
Wandered into this place on a crowded weekend night with my cousin who is a doctor, medical doctor mind you. Â Bouncer lets us in, I feel vaguely 21 again at the security post, then comes up to us after letting us in and tells my cousin to pull his pants up!
We were like wtf! Â His pants were tight under his shirt and tied with a belt! Â The bouncer said "no sagging in here" - hahaha not even joking! Â My cousin tried to show him his belt. Â What the eff man! Â I was wearing shorts and flip flops so I know their "dress code" is flexible. Â
This is a common problem from reading the other comments. I felt like I was at Dave and Busters circa 1991 in rural Illinois or something (actually there, and then, I was asked to turn my baseball hat around).
Shorts and stinky flip-flops? Â No problem. Â "Sagging" at the discretion of fathead at the door?? Â Forget it! Â Too gangsta! Ease up True North, you look silly and cheesy and hired some dicks to be the first face of your business.
To top it off some drunk fat middle aged guy who looked like Chris Christie took a sip of my martini! Â And it had ice chips floating in it!
What a crap place!
Went this past Saturday for a good friends' birthday celebration. I walk in with no problems, ordered my first drink and before I can finish it was asked to step outside by security. Apparently their ID scanning system is flawed because according to said system, I was previously banned?? For participating in an altercation that involved weapons and SDPD on 10/19/12... are you kidding me? I have been there maybe a half dozen times, and NEVER EVER have I been involved in anything like that there, or ANY bar for that matter. And I am 99% positive that I was not there on that date.
Nonetheless I was not allowed back in and my night was ruined. I immediately sent an email right then and there to the GM. The response I got essentially stated "we don't care, we have plenty of business."
I'm not sure as to even fight this matter going forward.
I know my case/ experience is way out of left field and hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. Absolutely horrible experience. I'll never wish for bad things to come upon others, but certainly not hoping for good things for them either.
TRUE NORTH MIGHT AS WELL HAVE A "WHITES ONLY" SIGN IN THE WINDOW.
DO NOT GO TO THIS BAR. THEY ARE OVERTLY RACIST! Allow me to explain and you can make your own judgement: I have been to this establishment on numerous occassions- with different groups of friends. When I am with my white friends, we have no problem getting in-regardless of our attire. When I am with my non-white friends, we are hassled about our clothing and sometimes not admitted into the place- we have been told that we have dress code violations, when we are obviously well within the outlined dress code. They wouldn't let my black friend in because his "pants are too baggy," but they admitted the white people ahead of us in and they had obvious dress code violations!
True North is manipulating thier policy to pick and choose who they allow in and who they don't. I have seen it OVER and OVER with this place. Â If you want to give your $$ to a segregationalist establishment, then visit True North. Cause they are not even shy about thier racist practices.
Because I have only been here once mid afternoon, I can't honestly give it 5 stars, but I liked what I saw.
First of all, any establishment that encourages dogs is a good establishment. Not only is True North pet friendly, but they gave us doggy treats upon entering with the adorable yorkie Leo, who is sure to become a superstar here in North Park...
I got a cucumber gin mint type drink (kind of like a mojito...) and my friend got champagne cocktail. We both approved. We didn't try the beer, but they had a great selection on tap, and a huge bar area inside.
When our waitress noticed we were cold, she turned on the heater and was very attentive throughout our 1 drink stay.
I definitely like the feel of this place, and didn't run into any of the aforementioned douche bags.
I will revisit the review when I revisit the bar, but all in all, this place was good. And in my personal opinion, "hoodrats" make bars fun.
Where do I begin? I seriously typed and deleted three sentences, because I don't even know where to start. Â I live in the neighborhood and True North has always been that displaced spot that has zero character. It's like a giant Chili's. The people that go are so boring. The food is too salty. And overall it's just douchey. Blegh. No.
Dear True North. Please leave.... and take West Coast Tavern with you. Thanks.
Occasion: Friends are in town
Restaurant: Always heard great things about this place. Especially at night. Unfortunately, I have yet to go at night time. Cover is $10 and I just thought it was a pretty steep price for not being downtown. When we went in, the place was pretty empty. People at the bar and in booths but not like nights when it's packed with a line outside and loud music.
Drinks: I got a champagne cocktail and it was actually really good but I'm a big sucker for champagne. My friends all got beer. We didn't get food here so I have yet to give a review on that.
Service: Pretty slow service. I wasn't even really sure who our waitress was. We sat ourselves and the table wasn't even clean when we got there. It took at least 10 minutes before someone even got around to us and when they did, they asked if we had been helped yet.
Conclusion: My experience this time wasn't extraordinary but I definitely wouldn't mind trying it out again.
Went here with a group of 10. Very casual atmosphere. A server came around our table constantly throughout the night to take our drink orders. The music was being played by a dj in the corner of the bar. Very upbeat 90s, some 80s remix. The crowd was not the Gaslamp 20somethings. It was more like 30s & up, gay, straight, hot guys, ugly girls. Bathrooms were clean. Overall, lots of fun! $13 for 2 beers but no cover before 9pm.
This place seemed great for a group because there's lots of people-watching opportunities that translate into uncontrollable laughter. I lost my voice that night :) Probably not as fun for a couple or going alone.
Yeah, yeah...I know about the douche population that flocks here on certain nights, but all the times I've popped in for a drink, I've dodged that bullet. I think that's due in part to NOT coming on Saturday/Friday nights.
P.S. If you want to see uncoordinated dancing and spirit hats, come on Dubstep Tuesday. It will give you the LOLs fer sure.
Things I like about True North:
1. It's a big space. (Plenty of elbow room for when you wanna throw dem bows.)
2. Friendly bartenders. (You won't have to wait a long time to get a drink.)
3. Drinks are inexpensive. (Your wallet will thank you.)
4. I prefer the outdoor back patio for maximum chillaxation. (Smoke 'em if ya got 'em.)
Lets set the record straight...TRUE NORTH is a dope spot!
If your looking for a place that plays that "ooonts oooonts" (annoying house music) then this is not the place for you. If your looking for a good blend of 90's, hip hop, and top 40 then turn me up in the headphones and get the party started! The servers are always friendly and speedy with whatever we need even when it gets cray...Brittany and Casey always hold it down! The bartenders know how to pour good, strong draaanks...Blue is the BEST bartender and my go to guy...My draaanks are always on point!
I mean theres something for everyone...tvs everywhere for you sports fanatics or music video junkies, a pool table for those not tryin to dance or to get your hussel on, a smokin area out in front to relieve some stress or for you "I only smoke when I drink" folks, and a dance area to get your twerk on! Oh and if your hungry they got some tots for you to snack on too!
So for everyone hatin on this plaaaace...yall are too high maintenance! Good people, good food/dranks, good music...What more can you want???? True north is definitely one of my go to spots in North Park and SD in general! Haters gona hate...but I love this place! Enough said...DEUCES!
Hmm. True North. I have to say there's only one reason I come here: so much footballs! They have multiple TVs, perfect for viewing your favorite team get demolished (maybe your favorite team doesn't, but I'm a Raider fan, so that's all I know). They show all games, and there's great fan representation for what seems like all of the teams (even the Browns!).
However, this is the one and only reason I really come here. And marginally.
During the afternoon games on Sunday, there is always some annoying DJ talking and playing random and often awful music during the commercials. No, I don't want to see 3 ladies participating in a shake weight contest (or dudes, for that matter). I want to watch football.
The food is not amazing. It's sufficient to be washed down with a beer, however it's not amazing. Though, the carne asada tots are pretty good. Get those. But lots of other stuff there is pretty mediocre. Not only is the food not amazing, it's kind of overpriced.
Overall, if you need a place to watch the games, it's a good place to go. Other than that...meh.
After ripping a hole in much of South and North Park this past week this place sticks out in my mind, however not for a good reason.
This place needs an over-haul. Â Stuck in 2002. Which is sad because it prob wasn't even open back then. Reminds me of a chain back east called Champps.
That is not a compliment. Â
Tater tots here are not much more than a basket of thawed out saturated fats packed with more sodium and potassium than John Candy would want (god rest his soul). Â Trust me, Napoleon Dynamite wouldn't even stuff these in his pocket for later.....Friken' Idiot.
Won't be going back.
Ok I am a San Diego native and love local joints.  I have been to West Coast Tavern a few times and the same people own  True North.  I walked in and first thing I noticed was nothing but out of town people, of course there is nothing wrong with that but leads me to believe the place is a trendy meet market which is fine as well. Â
First off we got our beers both 30th street pale ale which is a really nice beer, the beers were completely flat which normally means a burnt keg, I drank a third of mine and my cousins husband drank a quarter of his. Â I told the server and she removed the beers and said it was the bottom of the keg! We still got charged for the beer too! Next beer was great, which is why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1. Â
The food was horrible, frozen bagged chips, freezer burned meat, iceberg lettuce on the tacos, un-melted cheese on the quesadilla and did I mention we were charged for the flat beer? A douche bag out of town crowd, shitty warm beer and food that made me sick and I never get sick, I am actually editing this review to 1 star as we speak
This place is just okay. I'm not really a bar-type lady, but I came here after doing some yoga with friends. The only thing that was really worth talking about are the tots (especially the loaded tots...you have GOT to try them). The tots are bomb!
Other than that...the place is too loud and too crowded. It took us forever to get our bill and the bouncer did not look like he was having a good time.
Not sure if I'll come back, but if I do, I hope I can get an order of loaded tots to go.
This place has a huge bar, but other than that, I don't feel like it has a whole lot of room to hang out.
There are a few tables you can chill at, which we were lucky enough to get. A pool table in the back and a small dance area. The music was pretty good (hip hop) and the music videos/TVs they had on near the bar area were slightly entertaining.
I thought most of the drinks were good but probably becuase it didn't seem like they put too much alcohol in it (which I like) - except for my AMF. They made it reallly strong and I passed it on after about 2 sips.
Overall, I think it's an okay place to come to.
Decent beer, lots of tvs and the worst crowd ever. Rude and (for some strange reason) pretentious bouncers and staff... seriously offensive that this bar is in even in North Park.

hilarious.
I honestly have only been here twice. Everyone I know refuses to go here for some sort of douche factor reason. I have not encountered said douches on either of my visits. Wellll actually now that I think about it... there was a douche guy on one visit but he was manageable for the most part. We went outside to smoke weed and he made me wipe my lipstick off before i used his bong, in a super ordery way so yeah DOUCHE.
I have no clue as to the prices of the drinks, i have not paid for them here. I think I heard the bartender say my vodka soda was like $5?
I like all the cool shows on the TV's but so ADD to try and watch when you have so many good things on the screens, like last night for example God Father, Raising Arizona, Family Guy, ALF YES ALLFFF oh how i love that show..and something else good i forget.
I am glad my gay friends dragged me here last night because i got to see TV/Alf again!
So i guess it's gay friendly too? They picked it. Well maybe they were just bi now that i think about it..gay people are confusing as hell sometimes.. they were trying to throw me into the mix at 2 am? Why? Nice try guys. They definitely had no girl game.
So anyways, it has pool tables and an outdoor smoke patio too! Looking around the sausage fest factor was a plus if you're a single female. There was at least one attractive guy in there I would have made a sammich for.
Speaking of sammiches...Oh wait they have food? Ok well now I gotta go back and try the food. Hmm no one has ever given me a menu that's strange. Maybe people would order if they saw a menu? Just sayin.
This is the place to go if you want to watch football on a Sunday. Trust. Â I've been coming here since moving to the 'hood a couple of years ago, and it's always worth it. The bartenders and servers are awesome, as are the other patrons (well, for the most part.)
If you read other reviews you might realize that some people get their panties in a bunch about the TVs. "But I got there early!" they say. Yeah, if you're showing up at 9:45 on a Sunday morning expecting to just claim a TV in your primo desired spot, you're late. Just sayin'
Food - all done by their neighbor Urban Solace and the breakfast is yummy, though I do wish they'd bring back the bagel sandwich. Lunch food is great too - I especially like the Siracha Garlic chicken fingers.
I've never been on a weekend evening, though I've heard the crowd is different. Not really my style and all that, but for Game Day? It's perfect.
