We really liked this place when it first opened, but then the consistency issues started and found ourselves frequenting 2 Stones much more often.
We'd been told on several occasions that they were going to switch up the menu, but it never happened. After reading an article last week that they had hired a new chef and were going to roll out a new menu, we decided to go for lunch last Sunday. The menu DID have a couple new items, but nothing else had really changed. My chicken sandwich was overcooked - again and my fries were old & cold.
When I asked about the menu change the waitress told me they added lettuce/tomato to their burgers and added a kale salad to the menu. I'm not sure I'd exactly call that a new menu!
It's just so hit or miss that I think we have to pass until they get it back together!
From my limited experience, it seems like you have to work a little harder to find good places in Wilmington as opposed to, say, Philadelphia, but Ulysses is proof that they do indeed exist. A gastropub done right, with plenty of seasonal rotating beers and a competent control of the food.
When possible, you should always begin a meal with poutine, and the crispy tater tots were buried under a pile of silky-smooth cheese sauce and more barbecued meat than seemed prudent. Almost a meal in itself, I had to restrain myself for the main course, some decently-well cooked scallops served with mushroom ravioli in a leek brodo. While the fresh pasta was certainly very nice, the broth was a little over-seasoned.
Still, between the neighborhood, the beer selection, and the generous food, Ulysses has a whole lot of good going for it, and I'm a fan.
I revisited. Â Staff is very nice, surroundings are clean, and one of the only of its kind in the area. Â Having said that...
Fried pickles are sprinkled with cinnamon ( has anyone told the chef that pickles and cinnamon do not go together?). Â I have yet to attend a function here where I am satisfied with the flavor combinations - other than the mussels, they did well on the mussels. Â Â
Great beer selection but still overpriced, and what good is it if you just cant eat anything with it. Â I like the american pub, but Gastro needs to be taken out of the name.
This place has phenomenal food. I can only speak from experience after one lunch visit but man oh man, delicious! I had the crunchy Rock Shrimp tacos and they are really good; you get 2 good sized tacos and a side of fries. Â The shrimp is fried and topped with an avocado salsa, fresh slices of jalepeno and gobbs of yummy fresh queso fresco. And the dipping sauce is really good. The atmosphere is like an upscale pub with fancier, tastier food. Â Can't wait to go back; next time for dinner! I was drooling over their menu for lunch so can only imagine that the dinner one is better! The staff there were super nice too and that gained a lot of points. We had a table of 7 during the lunch time rush on a week day and our drinks never went unfilled; we were checked on frequently.
Review Source:This is an interesting place-an unlikely place in a strip mall. Â If you like beer, there are lots of choices both on tap and bottled. Â The food choices are more appealing than your usual local place. Â You can get mussels five different ways, but not with the traditional white wine and garlic. Â We got the Belgian and Dijon-the sauce is creamy as opposed to brothy.. Â You get at least two dozen mussels, plus fries with aioli and some toasted baguette.
For entrees we ordered the shrimp tacos, deep fried rock shrimp with jalapeño peppers and guacamole, and the Joyce burger but ordered it with goat cheese rather than cheddar, and it came with bacon and onion jam..  The soft tacos were quite good, but the tortillas should have been warmed first.  The bun on the burger was buttered, but over grilled and that imparted a burnt taste.  These things were off putting but I hope they were just having an off night. Â
Presentation is lacking a bit. Â Service is fine. Â The decor is mostly black with black and white horizontal stripes on the side walls. Â It's very dark and my older eyes struggled to read the beer menu so much so I was glad to have the flashlight app on my phone. Â It is LOUD, so don't expect to have an intimate conversation between the loud music and the customers, even in the dining room.
My first time there and I am HOOKED. Â Great vibe and friendly service. Â I live near Trolley and it is worth the drive for the food and beer. Â Beer menu is extensive and well priced. Â I had the barley soup and a salad for a light lunch but can't wait to get back for something more substantial. Â My lunch buddies had a phenomenal pulled pork sandwich (very smokey but delicious) and a kielbasa sandwich. Â Both really liked them.
Review Source:I don't get the hype with this place. I've given it a few shots, and can quite honestly say this is not my go to restaurant/bar. Food wasn't awful, but it wasn't fantastic either. The burgers were Charcoal Pit quality. The drinks weren't great either. I'd rather just go to Joes across the street.
Review Source:Delaware definitely surprised me with their cute restaurants & awesome food. This place is no exception! HAVE THE BUCKET OF MUSSELS & SEAFOOD DIP!!!! It is to dieeee for!! Beers are also AMAZING. I wish we had this restaurant in California where I am from because I'd come here with my friends all the time if i could.
Review Source:Rapidly becoming my favorite place. We went on the recommendation of a co-worker, and I owe them HUGE. Awesome beer list, great servers, fantastic good. Classy ambiance and atmosphere without being pretentious. Every time we have gone, I find something else on the menu I want to try. The appetizers are amazing, the mussels especially wonderful. Cant wait to go back. Highest possible recommendation. if you like great upscale pub grub with a fantastic beer list, this is the spot.
Review Source:I have eaten here on a number occasions. Â The food was good. Â I particularly enjoyed the crab meat eggs benedict that I had for brunch. Â I also enjoyed the blackened catfish sandwich. On my last visit they ran out of my favorite craft brew. Service on each occasion was fair at best. Â My wife and I had to wait at the door to be seated for an extended period of time and the waitress seemed a bit rushed. I must say one major concern I had was the amount of Aryan neo-nazi propaganda on the cars of the employees. Â On each visit I noticed employees cars with confederate flag, and German Scull propaganda parked right in front of the Pub. Â I have seen the bartender and other employees get out of these vehicles and walk in to work. Â I must say this sets a very unwelcoming tone to the establishment unless of coarse they are trying to attract this element.
Review Source:I've been going to Ulysses since they have opened, I work on Philadelphia Pike so it's only a 5 minute drive. I always go on Wednesdays or Thursdays during the lunch rush. Danielle has been the bartender on those days and she always does an absolutely phenomenal job. She's always hustling and making good conversation, 10/10 bartender.
The lunch entree menu scales from $10-$16, and the portions have always been more than enough to leave on a full stomach and sometimes with leftovers. Every once and awhile the food takes a little longer than average, but that being said I'm typically there during the lunch rush. Joyce Burger, Chicken Nixon and the Mile High 2.0 are slammin' sandwiches and all go great with a tall frosty beer. The Fish and Chips is also among my favorites.
You HAVE to try the wings. They smoke them and come in a variety of flavors, but the best is the dry rubbed. I have taken several friends here and all of them say that they are the best wings they have ever had. I would have to agree.
The beer selection is paralleled only by a handful of other restaurants in the state, and changes every few weeks. The 12 oz. bottles and 6-10 oz. glasses range from $6-$10 so if you're looking to drink 3-4 beers while you eat, expect the price range to go from "$$" to "$$$" I gave it two dollar signs because if you don't drink and you buy a lunch entree you're probably only going to spend ~$14, and even with a beer you're still only around $20. They have several larger bottles of micro brews and they can cost the upwards of $30.
The wait staff when I'm not at the bar has always been very knowledgeable of the menu, and has a solid understanding of the beer list. They're very friendly and do an excellent job serving.
The decor has also improved over the past year with new furniture and beer taps that decorate the dining room. I would say that the subway stripes in the dining room are strange, but it all has unique feel to it.
Go and eat at Ulysses, you won't regret it.
This is fantastic neighborhood bar tucked away in a strip mall in north Wilmington. Â The menu and decor may come off as a bit pretentious to some but it didn't bother me at all. Â This is our go to place when we are in town visiting family.
There is a great beer list and the food was exceptionally good for a neighborhood bar. Â The wings and burgers were in particular were top notch. Â
It is very encouraging to see the success of small indie restaurants in N. Wilmington. Â Ulysses has definitely raised the bar for restaurants and bars in N. Wilmington. Â Hopefully this will encourage new businesses to open and force established ones to up their games.
I go here quite often, and it is by far my favorite bar/restaurant in North Wilmington. It has a great vibe, the food is awesome, and the beer/bar selections are fantastic. It has been a welcomed addition to the neighborhood, as the locals flock here weekly. The menu has creeped up in sophistication, and I have no qualms about it.
If you are in to craft beer, and great food, then this is a great place to become a regular.
I enjoy the burgers, pizzas, smoked wings, and mussell pots. The daily specials are unique, and intriguing.
I really wanted to like this place.
The beer menu is quite extensive and the staff was very accommodating, but the menu kind of left me flat.
The food combinatiions seemed to shout "trying too hard." (ie. duck confit pizza). Â I'm very simple, I guess, and this type of dining doesn't appeal to me (to each his own, right?). Â I ordered the fish and chips - they did a good job w/it, crispy, flaky, with malt vinegar on the side, and the cucumber slices were refreshing. Â The onion and stout gratin soup was delicious. Â
If I was coming back, maybe just for some beers and mussels.
The restaurant and bar was packed, so people must love it here.
Living in North Wilmington for almost 8 years now, Ulysses may be one of the best additions to the neighborhood since I arrived. Nestled in between a drug store and a Chinese buffet I'd never set foot in, UAG is seriously the closest thing to "Cheers" that I've ever visited.
No longer tasked with having to drive into the post-5pm ghost town known as "center city" Wilmington, the Northern burbs finally (thank God) have a place to go that's not named "Stanley's".
Approaching their 1st "birthday", the U (as I call it) has efficiently evolved into everything we hoped it would. Were there some duds along the way? Sure - every new restaurant needs to feel things out and let their customers judge what should stay, and what should go. But we've watched the management and kitchen staff listen to feedback and in turn tweak certain dishes, introduce new ones for the changing seasons, and even get rid of the aforementioned "duds". Don't be afraid to speak up if you ever have a question or complaint - they actually do listen.
Despite being a total meat eater - the Veggie burger is by far one of the biggest hits on the menu. Made fresh - not in that 'perfectly round out of a box' shape like you'll find at other places, I literally could eat this every time I'm there (and sometimes it feels like I do). The fresh baked pretzels and cheese sauce (which is like crack) now has a sharp slammin' mustard as an alternative dip. Definitely check out the specials while you're there - there's a reason they call them "specials".
Maybe even more so than the food and beer at Ulysses to enjoy is the staff. If you're going to make a place your hangout, take the time to actually meet the people.
All in all, Ulysses has taken the North Wilmington area to a new level, and I wish them all the same success in the coming years. If you had any doubts and are tired of the same old "big box" restaurants, this is the place to go.
Had lunch here today with a group of coworkers. Â I had the house salad with shrimp which was blah. Â It was basically a $14 bowl of greens with 3 shrimp on top. Â At a minimum, they should consider adding some cheese and croutons to improve it. Â Needless to say, I left hungry and DO NOT recommend ordering a salad for a main dish. Â A few folks ordered pizza which looked the best. Â One friend had been there before so she ordered the catfish rueben that she raved about. Â She said it wasn't as good today as her first visit.
I would probably give this place another change but I'm definitely not rushing back any time soon.
The family and I made the drive from Philly after seeing this place on a ch 10 show. It's was good! The steak & potato nachos were better than expected! Our waiter Derrick took *great* care of us (we were pretty high maintenance) and the guys that brought our food were very personable. The pulled pork sandwich was yummy
Review Source:My wife and I went back to Ulysses for our third visit with our daughter and son-in-law to celebrate the son-in-law's 30th. Â We started with the pork belly pierogies and the fresh baked pretzel appetizers which were both very good. Â My wife and I both had the blackened catfish rueben which we both rated a 4. Â Our daughter had the veggie burger and our son-in-law the Joyce burger. Â Both burgers had burnt buns and earned themselves a rating of 3. Â The server was attentive and professional. Â In balance a 3 - not as good as our previous visits. Â Still recommend the place.
Review Source:I love Ulysses!!!! Â I've lived in North Wilmington for nearly 3 years now, and this area was in desperate need of a great local pub / restaurant. Â When I saw the sign go up in their location, I was thrilled that a new place was coming to the neighborhood.
Since their opening, my husband and I have been to Ulysses at least 6 times, and we've been very pleased each time. Â We've brought a number of friends who have also enjoyed it. Â Even my parents, who are not big restaurant-goers, had a great time and were still talking about the meal the next day!
The food is all very solid - we've tried lots of different items on the menu, and nothing has been disappointing. Â The steakhouse nachos are a must have - really, really tasty! Â I also am a big fan of the buffalo chicken sandwich - the Ulysses version of this sandwich is a little different than most restaurants. Â I can't put my finger on what makes the sauce different, but it has great flavor. Â My husband and mom really love the duck entree. Â And, this may seem like a strange thing to review at a pub, but their coffee is fantastic! Â
Of course, the beer selection is great, and always changing. Â The wait staff is wonderful with giving samples in case you can't decide which beer to choose! Â Ulysses also makes great use of social media - I love that they "tweet" when they are about to tap an interesting new beer!
I'd love to see them add some more happy hour specials, and a beer flight so that you can try a larger variety in one sitting.
I soooo want to like this place!
Visited first on new years eve around 4:30 pm, second visit was a few days ago. Â
First of all this place is close to me, so close that if I loved the food I'd probably visit once or twice a week.
They have a very large beer list, simply typed in MS Excel, with default Arial font. Â It would take about 4 seconds to jazz up the beer list to make it look presentable. Â For a place that seems to be proud of their beer list they certainly don't take any pride in presenting it to the customer. Â
Both visits we ordered one of the cheeseburgers, most of the entrees on the menu seem overpriced, for the location and given our experience with the burgers I'm not sure I want to waste my money. Â On both visits I ordered my burger Rare. Â Rare to me means it should have a cool red center, yes I know I could potentially get ill, but that's the way I want to eat my beef! Â My first visit the burger was so well done I couldn't distinguish it from a hockey puck. Â My second visit my Rare burger came out well, thankfully with some ketchup it was edible unlike the first burger. Â I wanted to try one of the entrees but if burgers can't be cooked correctly I don't want to waste my money. I really don't understand how hard it is to cook a burger rare. Â
On a high note, the pretzel appetizer is tasty. Â
Will we be back, unlikely, we'll drive into town to the Ale House.
This place is just awful. Â What were they thinking? Â The decor is a trainwreck, the service is laughable, and the food only reads good on the menu. Â Once it is in front of you, you immediatley find yourself locating the nearest bathroom for the inevitable barf-fest you are about to partake in. Â
We were here on a Friday night and the restaurant was abandoned, and the bar area was half full at max.  The people that were there didn't stay long and we found ourselves close to being the only people in the place the longer we stayed.  From porcelain mooseheads, to zebra striped walls that make me feel like I'm at the makeup counter at Sephora rather than a restaurant, gives me the feeling that whomeever designed this place has no clue how to make a restaurant comfortable and inviting.  It was loud and sterile all at the same time, go figure.  The morgue-green floor in the bar didn't put nice thoughts in to my head, especially  before digging into my veggie burger.  There was a hollowed out canoe hanging from the ceiling on one end of the barroom, the ONLY reference to the ancient seafaring epic the restaurant (I am assuming) was named after.  Other than that, we are left with white tile all over the walls that make me think I just stepped into a New York subway... also not appetizing.  The lounge area with couch and chairs was awkward and not cozy, there was no art or decor on the walls to please the eye.
The beer selection was good, but the menu was a joke, it was printed on copy-grade paper and the style was a darn excel spreadsheet! Â I was half expecting to see a column at the end indicating cost and profit-margin, but I guess they left that out.
After acquiring our beers, we perused the menu and selected what we thought would be interesting choices to taste:  Bacon Meatballs, Black Bean and Rice Veggie Burger, and the Margherita Pizza.  Well.... they all were awful, a perfect ZERO.  The bacon meatballs literally looked like fecal matter thrown into a bowl.  They were overcooked and tough and  had a disgusting canned ham quality aftertaste.  The Margherita Pizza was edible, but it was unbelievably ordinary, with an obvious canned sauce, didn't I see "American Gastropub" plastered across the front of this place???  And finally, the black bean burger, loaded with salt and after eating about half of it, you need to throw in the towel because it is too overpowering.  Speaking of throwing in the towel, the napkins are literally dish towels, I guess they were trying to be cute.  I am never going back here.
Great beer selection, a heads up on what beers will be tapped next/soon. Â A great place for a pint. Â It also happens to be about 130 yards from my childhood home, which brought back great memories, so that didn't hurt. Â If I still lived there, I might get into a little trouble with that much great beer so close!
Review Source:I'm giving Ulysses three stars...but I'm hoping to bump it to four in the near future.
No complaints about the beer/wine/booze list...it's extensive and fun, and the managers know what they're talking about. But the food (to date) has been wildly inconsistent. Wings are fine, but generally overcooked. The spinach dip doesn't taste fresh, and the "homemade chips" it comes with generally taste burned, which overwhelms the spinach. Fish n' chips...well, let's just say they're not quite ready yet. There's ambition here, and that's good to see, but they've yet to find consistency, especially for what they're charging.
But some items are on point. Burgers are great, Some of the appetizers are excellent, and the vibe (loud, but not overly hip) is refreshing for North Wilmington. So here's hoping Ulysses works out their menu...I'd love for them to stick around and become the new hotspot 'round here.
Back visiting the rents from the left coast and decided to talk them into trying a new restaurant in the neighborhood. Big mistake.
Started off with a decent beer selection. Loved that they have DFH 120 min IPA and and a large selection of other rare and high end brews. Other than that, it was a slow motion train wreck.
For an appetizer started with the mussel pot. A good size pot was brought out to the table to split between my girlfriend and I. I open the pot to find only the bottom is covered with 15-20 mussels. 4 of them are closed, and maybe 4 others are dubious looking at best. At $15, or around $1.25 per mussel, one of the worst deals ever. Who serves closed mussels??
I ordered the pan seared duck breast medium rare with broccoli rapini, and my father and girlfriend ordered the fish and chips. The fish and chips were both soggy and the batter was inedible. The duck breast was RAW in the center, around the center, and almost everywhere else. Also garnished with rock hard cranberries. Broccoli rapini was boiled? or just overcooked somehow. It was mush.
Told the server about the duck, the manager or owner came over and I asked to have it taken off the bill, and asked him to comp me a beer for the inconvenience, which he did.
For dessert, my father ordered the fried ice cream which came out in the same soggy inedible dough used for the fish and chips? Amazing. Dinner for four, around $120 for a horrid experience.
To top it off, as soon as we arrived home, I emptied the contents of my stomach onto the driveway. I took that as a bad sign, and the coup de grace.
Peace out Ulysses. You will not be missed.
I went  today with a friend who recommended Ulysses, and we both met for lunch. I liked the decor, very different, a mix of casual lounge/bar area and in the open, spacious back area are tables and booths.  They have a large choice of beers to select from, probably similar to Brandywine Brewing Company's choices and then some; I got the Brooklyn Chocolate Stout. Very good.
The Fish and Chips  for lunch. and for dessert, the Chocolate Bourbon Bacon Brownie. All very good,. the Fish and Chips were alright, although the fish was moist and perfectly done, the breading was soggy and chewy, but that was really my only gripe. The Chocolate Bourbon Bacon Brownie, was different and delicious.
I definitely will return to try more beers and  a few  more of the food choices
We visited Ulysses on Friday at ~9 pm.  I was immediately impressed by the décor (not what you'd expect for the location).  Hostess quoted 20 minute wait for a table so we retired to the bar to unwind with a drink and scope out the menu.  Extensive beer list with plenty of interesting offerings.  Wine list was solid as well.  Menu looked great!  We're planning to come back to have a few beers and some apps at the bar.
After 20 minutes exactly we were seated for dinner. Â We started with the shrimp and grits (not the usual preparation, but unique and tasty). Â Hint - it's not the creamy grits you'd expect. Â I had the short rib goat cheese mac and cheese. Â Not overly goaty, but nice and creamy with a slight twang. Â The short rib was cooked properly rendering out most of the fat and leaving only tender perfectly braised meat. Â I'd definitely order it again (my benchmark of a good dish). Â My gf ordered the rib eye. Â The steak was perfectly cooked. Â Only complaint is that the mashed potatoes were a little uninspired. Â We passed on dessert since we were stuffed, but the chocolate bourbon bacon brownie if definitely on my to-do list!
If I'd change one thing it would be the noise-level. Â Unfortunately, we were subjected to the conversations of everyone within a 3 table radius. Â To be fair it was getting late as we finished dinner (meaning everyone was a few drinks in and getting loud) and the place was packed. Â As we left the bar was hopping. Â The couches looked like a comfortable place to hang out late night.
Overall first impression was extremely positive. Â We're planning a repeat visit (and probably many more) in the near future. Â By far Ulysses is the most interesting new place to open in the area recently.
I am quite pleased by the interesting and relatively progressive menu offered here. Such is par for a "gastro pub" but not so much for a lowly strip mall in Delaware. Some decor and design choices seemed strange (subway tile wall?), but after seeing the menu, strange might be an appropriate style choice.
The beer list is detailed and extensive, but I'm not sure if having so much information about a beer at my fingertips made it more or less difficult to choose. Apparently I chose wisely because the SA Choco Cherry paired perfectly with my spinach salad (with duck confit & fried pumpkin gnocchi, what?!-- definitely my new favorite restaurant salad).
Mussels in different flavors are very vogue right now and I'm certainly not complaining. However, none of Ulysses's combinations sounded all that fantastic. We opted to try the fra diavolo for simplicity's sake, and they were just average. The mussels themselves were pretty flavorless and the spiciness of the sauce was one-note. It was a generous portion though, and included french fries. But I would  much rather have had a couple of hefty chunks of crusty baguette, as there was plenty of sauce for mopping and french fries just would not cut it.
My friend's steak frites was simple and executed correctly. He also enjoyed the side salad that came with it.
I'll certainly be back again, because those burgers were calling to me.
3.8 work in progress .....
Named after a president and located in a very residential shopping center in Wilmington you wouldn't think that an American Gastro Pub would fit between a Rite Aide and a Subway. I had heard about the opening a few months back and decided that I def needed to check this place out. The soft opening was last night and I heard nothing but good things so lunch plans were set and off we went. I met up with one of my favorite people for lunch around 11:45. It wasn't too crowded but there were a couple of larger parties already sitting in the dining room. As soon as you walk in you can see a lot of effort was put into the décor. Wood floors and plush lounge chairs take up the bar area and the dining room has a great color scheme black and white stripes and bright red walls. The bar area has ample seating and plenty of TV's throughout the entire restaurant.
The beer list is pretty solid choices about 20 on rotating draft and 20 or so by the bottle. We weren't given a wine list but when I walked by the bar I saw a few bottles. I started with Saranac Pomegranate wheat and my drinking buddy did a Rogue brown ale.
I opted for an app since I wasn't too hungry the trio of sliders comes with one of each (beef burger, pork and fish) I was able to substitute for all fish. Mini versions of the fish "Reuben" on buttered small brioche buns were brought to the table. The fish was slightly under done for my tastes but the flavor was still pretty solid and 3 small sliders were the perfect amount of food for me. My Friend got the short rib chili which she said was quite good. As a nice touch they sprinkle pumpkin seeds on top.
3.8 stars this place is definitely a work in progress and has loads of potential. I would like to see them offer a lunch combo or lunch specials in addition to the regular menu and of course HH never hurts. I will definitely be coming back its very close to work and my current residence.
