This is the best Wahoo's, the one I fell in love with. The one I've been to on Hampden and the one in Boulder are still good, but this one is the best. The margaritas here are super strong and the food is just a notch above all the others.
If you've never been here before I recommend you come on a Saturday during happy hour, get a margarita, some chips & salsa, and a Wet Banzai Burrito covered in Green Sauce(free on Sat.).
My only complaint about Wahoo's in general is that they have Tapatîo instead of Sriracha. Tapatîo's weak and I basically have to cover my burrito again to get the amount of heat I like. Sriracha would be awesome.
The fact that this downtown location survives being right next door to the Rio is an absolute testament to the product they offer! I must have been here for lunch three dozen times this year alone! With a diverse, delicious, dynamic menu perfect for a young man on a budget, this restaurant can't be beat. Be sure to add to the 401k (tip) jar when you get the prompt, proactive and friendly service I get every-single time I go in for a delicious smothered shrimp burrito and chips and salsa!
Review Source:Forget the tacos. Â Forget the burritos. Â Get the Wahoo's Sandwich. Â It is delicious! Â My colleague told me about the sandwich at Wahoo's, and she sold me on chicken as the filling. Sure, chicken is good. Â So is the carnitas. Â But the best way to fill that delicious bread of theirs is with carne asada! Â Carne asada, cheese, and guac all on a tasty soft roll. Â Chips and salsa is included, but I sometimes sub onion rings. Â Those are some tasty rings to accompany my righteous sandwich!
Review Source:does it matter where they are california or here the food is always good and the atmoshpere is laid back cali fun. The one I used to go abck in cali is jsut as good as here. you can't beat tacos pescado on a hot summer day with a cool pacifico.
This place is unique and should be treasured (as much as one can treasure a beach bum taco stand like place if denver had beaches).
I rarely give 5 stars to fast food joints, but this one I love! I love Wahoo's they never go wrong.
I recommend the Shrimp Plate, The Baja Rolls (don't forget the cream cheese and cilantro dipping sauce), The Grilled Wahoo Fish Plate and finally their Kids Chicken Bowl. Amazing!!!! The white cilantro lime rice is sooo good too!!! Whom I kidding its the Cilantro Sauce (Green Sauce) that makes everything taste good. Chips and Salsa are tasty too.
The new management in this location is superb! He re-trained his employees well. Everyone has been more catering and approachable. Every visit, I'm never disappointed.
Wahoo's on Blake is ultra fantabuloso!!!
A friend of mine introduced me to Wahoo's as it is a half a block from my office. She suggested the blackened fish taco's. I have never had fish taco's and was very excited to give em a try.
Got the fish taco's with beans and brown rice. They were great. Perfect balance of heat and flavor with the fish with cabbage, a little lime juice with mild tomato salsa. The accompanying brown rice was nice and nutty.
This will be on my list of many downtown places for lunch.
Wish I could've had one of their Margarita's with lunch...too bad I was working...LOL. Maybe next time...
We loved this place on our Saturday night visit.
My fish tacos were excellent. Huge amount of fish that was moist and tender. The pico de gallo was spicy and excellent, loved it. Â Rice was perfectly cooked. Black beans were tasty and again perfectly cooked. The wife got fish enchiladas and they were perfect. The portions are HUGE! I could not finish my meal. Luckily the wife got drunk and ate my food which she does when she is tipsy. So I keep her drunk all the time. (Disclaimer: For those who know me and my wife, I am kidding.)
And the prices are cheap. We got a bucket  of premium label brews for $13 and had ourselves a time! The service was very warm and friendly. The worst thing one can say is that it is located right next door to Rio Grande (or something like that) which is a chain that, according to reviews, serves mediocre food and bad margaritas but for some reason is ridiculously busy. So people, wake up and go to the underdog where the food is way better and the service much warmer. Would return in a heartbeat next time I am in Denver. And we are from Texas so we know Mexican.
This place is a hit or miss. Â I have been here several times, usually when the lines at other places around noon are too long, and I still feel indifferent.
I usually order a blackened Chicken quesadilla. Sometimes it tastes good, other times it doesn't. It just depends on how many people are there I guess.
Again, the guacomole is also hit or miss. Sometimes it taste fresh, other times it taste very watery.
Note: the stuff here is much higher in calories then Chipotle. You can think you are ordering healthy, when really a Chicken burrito bowl or the like is over 1500 calories.
All in all, Wahoo Fish Taco wouldn't be my first choice for lunch in LoDo.
I had the two taco combo plate. For one- that's a lot of food. You don't think it'll be a lot of food, but oh man, its a lot. I ordered a Cajun fish taco and a grilled fish taco. I preferred the grilled over the cajun--the cajun spices weren't the greatest--but the grilled was oh so perfect. Light, tender and juicy! The side of rice and beans could have fed a small village. They were giant mounds on my plate. All that for less than $7. I call that a deal.
Is this mouth watering fatty goodness? No. But if you're looking for a fresh, healthy meal that even makes you feel somewhat healthy while eating it--this is the place.
I like the fresh ingredients, and the healthy choices. This is good fast food and tasty too.
What I don't like is the slacker snotty cashiers I oft encounter here. They should be wearing a "I'd rather be skiing" T-Shirt.  My first trip to Colorado I stopped here and was smirked at  when I didn't know what a "wet burrito" is. I"m from Seattle, ask me what a wet latte is and I got it covered.
Today I felt like a major imposition to the gum chewing college soph who took my order and grumbled when I asked where the soda machine was.
But, all in all the chain is OK and it beats eating a McAnything.
2 blackened fish tacos, a side of ahi rice and spicy cajun white beans later.. if Wahoo's had an eating contest I would sign up in a split second. These are great fish tacos. The best part is, they're either grilled or blackened and served on warm corn tortillas with spicy pico de gallo, red salsa, and shredded cabbage. You can even mix it up and have 1 of every kind of filling you want on the same platter, from meat to seafood, they even have a vegetarian option! It wasn't 10 minutes after ordering before a hot plate arrived in front of me, smelling fresh, looking delicious. Or was it smelling delicious and looking fresh? Mouth watering, healthy food under $7 a plate and in 10 minutes? Either way I win!
The interior is clean, sanitary, and full of bumper stickers. Sometimes, especially during midwestern winters, it feels nice to pretend the sound of cars passing by on 20th are crashing waves, you're at the beach, a skateboard is resting underneath your feet, and you're in the company of good friends.
It's been 3 days since my last visit and I cannot wait to go back to try a shrimp burrito! I've been searching up and down Federal and etc. for a shrimp burrito in Colorado for 2 years!
I've been going to wahoo's for a while now and I am throwing a charity event so I want to ask and see if one of my top choices for food would want to do anything to help out. I specifically asked for maybe a gift card for 5 or 10 bucks or anything would help since all the proceeds are benefiting cancer and the manager acted like i was asking for the entire GD restaurant. He was short and rude. I understand if you can't help that's ok. The way this guy refused was just rude. "I cant do anything for ya" in a very rude tone. At least when i got shot down at other places they were very polite about it.
It really sucks because the food is great and I really dig wahoo's.... Shitty way to lose a customer people.
you get more than one star because of the food and simply that.
Visiting from Chicago and found this place  just exploring Denver. Oh how my life would be complete with a Wahoo in Chicago. (and I'm not talking about the governor).  This place is incredible!
I ordered the Bonzai Burrito with blackened fish, black beans, and brown rice. Three words: To. Die. For.
Will hopefully be heading back to this place whenever I'm in Denver!
Wahoo's is cheap, has a great atmosphere, and is yummy. I've been to 4 locations but the downtown one is closest to me. I always get the combo with one fish taco and one fish enchilada. Now, in theory a fish enchilada doesn't even sound good to me but it is awesome. I always request the green sauce on top which is a flavorful, creamy sauce- not a traditional enchilada sauce but it goes perfectly with the fish enchilada. The fish tacos are good but I always have to discard some of the copious amounts of shredded cabbage they add. I love the black beans, rice, and pico that it comes with. I also love that all the tables have Tapatio on them.
The service has always been friendly.
It is always very clean.
High chairs in good working order and clean.
Great, laid back atmosphere.
Growing up in So. Cal, I remember when Wahoo's first broke out in the early 2000's and how it was a favorite lunch spot. I was excited when I found out that this location was down the street from my new job.
It's yummy and quick, not quite fast food but not quite a full-service restaurant. The ingredients are fresh and the staff is friendly, there isn't much more to debate.
I always either get the the salad with grilled chicken or grilled fish and it's always a pretty decent light lunch. Can't say much about the fish tacos but my coworker had them and really enjoyed them
I've never been to Wahoo's or had a Fish Taco before, but I like fish and I like tacos. They combine the two well at Wahoo's. The inside is very fun and decorated, it reminded me of California with all the bumper stickers.
I haven't had anything but fish tacos from Wahoos and it was good. Definitely worth a try if you haven't had fish tacos.
I've been going to this Wahoo's location for well over a decade. In the late 90's, it was probably my favorite lunch joint in downtown Denver, but in the past 5 years or so, it's been the very definition of "hit or miss".
Sometimes I'll go there, receive good service and my food will taste  great. My tastes vary, but lately I've been digging their steak over the fish. The shrimp isn't bad at all, but sometimes it tastes too rubbery. For being such a simple dish, their rice n' black beans mixture is yummy. Mix in some squeezed lime juice and it's even better.
Other times, I'll wait for up to 15 minutes for my food, or my fish taco will taste like dirt. I'm also strongly opposed to the short, quiet, mumbly clerk who mans the front register over the lunch hour and can't seem to communicate well. When there's music blasting and you have a clerk speaking with all the volume of a mouse fart, it's incredibly frustrating. I've gotten to the point where if I see that guy on the register, I'll browse the newspaper racks until someone else takes over.
The joint also seems to be a favorite casual lunch hour for the impromptu "business meeting" between co-workers. Between 11-2 on weekdays, it's not uncommon to see four or five guys in "business casual attire" sit for an hour, commiserate over their jobs with LOUD jokes and anecdotes, while constantly refilling their drinks.
But Wahoo's is usually a decent lunch spot, despite my curmudgeonliness. They have a "Frequent Fueler" Â punch card and happy hour specials if you're into deals. The free refills are a nice plus, as well.
Light, fresh and delicious! I had a group of out-of-towners to please who were looking for something not so heavy and greasy, and they all loved it. I had the Wahoo Bowl teriyaki style and it was awesome. We were also on our way to a Rockies game, so needed our meal to be pretty quick. The whole experience was pretty much everything we wanted!
I'll definitely be back. Great frozen margaritas too.
I like the idea of eating fish. Â They are delicious when seasoned and cooked appropriately (or not at all in the case of sushi) and certainly can be construed as healthy eats. Â So when I had my first fish taco many moons ago I immediately fell in love. Â
Fish = good, taco = great, fish taco = deliciousness FTW. Â
Wahoo's does a pretty good job of sticking to what I assume are their SoCal roots except for the deep fried version of the fish. Â I've been to a few places in LA and San Diego and must say that a fish taco with fried fish is much more tasty than grilled but obviously less healthy. Â So Wahoo's is trying to do it's best to keep America trim and have done so in a way that isn't as offensive as say, fat-free cookies or labels on items like Hot Tamales that say "fat-free food!"
Overall, I like Wahoo's food and the atmosphere at almost every location I've been to in Colorado screams surf/skate shop circa 1988 when Gotcha, Ocean Pacific and Jimmy Z's were the brands of choice... Â It makes me happy in my Jams.
The Superb: Â Awesome teriyaki. Â The meat had the perfect amount of char. Â The staff was extremely nice.
The Average: Â Not a lot of flavor in the beans or rice, but after all, it IS beans and rice, so I wasn't expecting much! Â My beer was a bit flat. Â Not sure what that was about.
The Horrid: Â Sticky tables. Â Oh how I hate that.
Overall, I would definitely go back. Â Especially at lunch time!
Wahoo's is an interesting concept, that a lot of people seem to think is "fishy" but whatever fish tacos are delicious and I don't even really like fish!
The boyfriend and I stopped in on a Sunday to get some drinks after the Rio had an attitude about just ordering drinks & sitting on the patio, we headed next door to Wahoo's instead. Time on the patio in the sun, a few Margs, a Sunset Wheat (on tap! hooray!), some chips, and a taco plate later we were feeling pretty good.
Dear Wahoo's, thanks for not having an attitude like your next door neighbor (and you are way more affordable and much better tasting)!
Went here to lunch with some office buddies during the middle of the week, as one of them had been here before. After hearing the name of the place and seeing the menu for the first time I assumed it was going to be a variation of Chipotle. Nope.
Since it was my first time in the restaurant I asked the guy taking my order what was good. His english was either poor or he just didn't feel like helping me. After suggesting one thing I said OK. Then he proceeded to ask me a bunch of questions about what I wanted on it. None of these options did he mention cost extra. I think I ended up spending $14 on a single dish... I'm still not sure to this day how that happened. As I was staring at my receipt I figured at least it'd be good and I'd know better next time.
Nope. The food was mediocre. Worse still was that the table we sat at was completely sticky. Not a wet sticky, but like somebody had spilled beer or soda and just neglected to clean it up. What was even better was that it wasn't just our table, but the table next to ours as well. I made a game of pressing my $14 receipt into the table and *peeling* it off while I waited for my food.
I'd avoid it.
CRAP! absolute crap! Â I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, fish tacos. Â I've been eating them for a good 20 years before Rubios got huge (when there was only 1 in San Diego), in Little Rosearetta and Baja Mexico. I've had fish tacos in NY, DC, Miami, all over this country and these are by far the worst I've ever had. The rice and beans and salsa were bland, how do you screw up rice?
I would give them half a star for decor and another half for not frying the fish, but thats one of the things that make fish tacos so damn good, the crispy next to the soggy and tangy. Â I'm not a big fan of rubios anymore since their product quality has gone down hill in the last several years, so might I recommend Jalapeno Mexican Grill at 5701 Leetsdale Dr. next to the Drive Thru Starbucks
Though some of the fellow diners in this joint have erked me, I've always had good service from the staff. Â Denver fire taking up the whole bar area while kids are running around in front of the bathrooms with wet hands.... Â think about grabbing your food "to go".
The fact that their fish isn't breaded nor fried is one of the reasons I choose Wahoo's as a grib dib joint. Â A couple shrimp tacos with a scoop of pico/salsa and a squirt of lime and mmm. Â I forgo the second corn tortilla if the other doesn't fall apart on me. Â My better half usually get the huge honkin burrito, dripping wet. Â If I could forgo the rice I'd be all up on that. Â Though I think their "blackened" items are all spice and no fish.
The oatmeal cookie is latent with buttah... the big oatmeal cookies from Safeway are much better and cheaper. Â OK you can try to suck up to me and I'll make you a batch ;)
I have eaten at Wahoos for years. Â The LoDo location is now on my never-eat-again list because of how appalling the service has been the past 2 times. Â
I have worked in food service and I know that it can get hectic. Â BUT, if you can't even acknowledge my presence while working right in front of me for 6 full minutes, then I want nothing to do with you. Â I had an identical experience twice in a row and now I will never go there again. Â
By the way, the food is good. Â No complaints there. Â If you really want to have some good fish tacos, though, check out Sayulita Fish Tacos in Mexico...unreal!!!
I consider myself a fish taco connoisseur. I've tried fish tacos all over this great wide world and none compare to these. Why?
1. They are healthy. Grilled, not fried.
2. Made with wahoo, not crappy, tasteless cod.
3. None of that messy, creamy white sauce that most others are served with.
4. And last, but most importantly THE SALSA. I pretty much drown my tacos in the stuff, I love it so much.
My other fav menu items are (and believe me, I've tried ALMOST everything on the menu) are Wahoo's Salad with Charbroiled fish (add black beans) and the fish enchiladas with green sauce. Yum. Those other fish taco places have nothin' on Wahoos!
Generally speaking I love Wahoos - they seem to have that "local business trying to make big" thing going on, and I like that. I love the decor: skater, boarder, snow bum mentality. You can't help feel comfortable here. If you love Colorado, you gotta have some heart for wahoos.
The food is good, fast food. If you love fast food, you'll love this place. A healthy variety - even veggie bowls and kid fare. I love the blackened fish tacos, or blackened fish bowl, but every time I get the black beans and rice I overeat. A good thing? not-so-much.
The last time I ate there I ordered tortilla soup, which wasn't great - it was more like chicken/veggie soup with strips of tortillas sprinkled on top. Won't order that again, but consistently, everything else is yumma.
It took me a while to get into a Wahoo's despite many recommendations. Honestly, the idea of a fish taco just did not appeal to me. Why would you take two things- fish and tacos- that are perfectly fine apart, and mush them together into a singularly unappetizing sounding chimera of healthy fast food? Well, apparently, because they taste GREAT.
I had the spicy fish taco and some chips and salsa. I'm not really a seafood fan, and spicy fish is generally gross, but this was great- and the whole time I sat there chowing down on my spicy fish taco, I was smiling like the cat that ate the cream because it was good, cheap, and even- this is the icing on the cake- fairly healthy!
We talked to one of the staff members about Wahoo's and this employee was one dedicated soul. Â The guy was busing tables and when we asked him about the history of Wahoo's, he had it more than memorized, and his goal was to work up in the chain of Wahoo's. Â
I love Wahoo's because it is still owned by three men from California, (who have YET to sell out to a big corporation) is a healthy way to eat fast food and you still feel cool sitting in the restaurant... It just has such a laid back feel. You can order up seafood dishes without putting a huge dent in your wallet... Perhaps that is why my boyfriend always takes me here... cheap, casual, and entertaining!
The staff are always great and the TV's keep my boyfriend from nagging me as I read my horoscope out of the weekly.
A great place for a group or a stop on the way home from the mountains or camping.
* Mahi mahi star one for making seafood affordable
** Yummy to my tummy star two is for a great chicken bowl and fish tacos
*** Me so pretty star three is for healthy food that is fast and easy on my wallet
**** Rub me the right way star four is for great staff with a commitment to the company
Even when I had a friend working there, I didn't frequent Wahoo's. Â The shrimp burrito is my favorite, but quite frankly they leave much to be desired. Â Beware of the blackened fish Banzai burrito, it'll kill all your taste buds with its spice. Â And I like spicy stuff. Â Their margaritas are definitely worth splitting a pitcher with someone - yeah they put apple juice in them, but you won't notice, you'll just order another one. Â Â
If you're walking by, you're hungry, and you've never been there, go ahead and try it out. Â But don't drive twenty minutes out of your way just to grab lunch there.
Alright, I enjoy Wahoo's Fish Taco, but I'm not sure what the big deal is. The meals I've had there have ranged from tasty to fair. It's worth frequenting, but I don't think worthy of its rabid following.
I've enjoyed my share of beef burritos there, and I used to work a block away and many nights would bike over to Wahoo's to enjoy dinner and a beer while watching the Avs on TV. Plus, Wahoo's scores extra points for its skydiving theme at its Boulder store. You'll never hear me complain about eating tacos while watching skydiving videos, but I'll take Pete's over Wahoo's any day.
See the line over at Rio's?? Do yourself and your stomach a favor by coming to Wahoo's instead. Order a pitcher of frozen margs (no, they're not as good as the Rio's, but they're damn strong) and some grilled spicy fish taco's, or share the onion rings (wow!) and a quesadilla. You'll be glad you got some decent food to soak up your alcohol. While Rio has the atmosphere and the crowds, Wahoo's offers a slightly quieter place for you and your friends to talk (while you're still coherent enough to hold a decent convo). Even better? Get a table on the patio and laugh at all the ppl waiting in line at the Rio while you're enjoying your frosty marg.
Review Source:i am ADDICTED to the chargrilled fish taco plate at wahoo's! Â
so delicious, drenched in so much lime, and they don't look at me like i'm crazy for bringing in my own sea salt shaker. Â i love nothing in this entire food world more, than a giant Pepsi (i know, i'm so gross!) and a plateful of chargrilled fish tacos from Wahoo's with a side of their french fries. Â
yum!
