When I found that Queen of Sheba on Fifth Street closed, I was disappointed. Then it occurred to me that another Ethiopian restaurant was practically right next door. Since I was craving Ethiopian, I thought it best to give Abyssinia a shot. The menu at Abyssinia is almost identical to that of Queen of Sheba, so I ordered what I always order there - the vegetarian combo. Collard greens, lentils, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and a salad. It was perfect in every way.
What sets Abyssinia apart from Queen of Sheba are the hot sauces. They served the meal with this little tray of three hot sauces - a red hot sauce, a green, wasabi-like hot sauce and a dry red pepper seasoning. I enjoyed testing them all out on each dish.
So we stumbled upon this new place on 5th street by chance, we were looking for Queen of Sheeba and since it had shut shop, this restaurant was up for a try.
It has a decent looking ambience, nothing too sophisticated but very real, with a earthy feel. We went in for lunch and it was empty (which was kinda surprising). The cold weather called for some hot tea and I enjoyed the tea with a hint of lemon..
Ethiopian restaurants that serve the Misir Wot (dark brown lentils) either with anjera bread (spongy bread) or rice will always draw me in. I always have the Misir Wot and this one wasn't any different. Tasty, served very well with rice and salad and tasted very well.
My only qualm about the dish was that the rice was a tad sticky (too much water) and the Misir Wot wasn't enough for the amount of rice (making it a dry dish).
The taste was very good and you should try it out !! I would still always love Addis :)
