I've been to Barleycorn's many many times over the years, and I've been to many locations. Â The food has always been fine, nothing to write home about, but not bad either. Â It's an okay place to go for a quick decent meal.
The last time I ate there, I ordered a sandwich and I chose fruit as the side. Â When my plate was delivered, I mistakenly received fries. Â I politely mentioned it to my server and she rolled her eyes and went and got an empty side plate and told me that I needed to scrape the fries off my plate onto the side plate so she could return them to the kitchen. Â I was in shock. Â Really? You want me to take the fries off my plate so that you can return them to the kitchen? Â She said that was their policy so that people didn't try to steal sides. Â Ok, so now I am trying to get free food? Really? Â The correct response would have been for her to apologize for the mistake and bring out fruit and ask if everything else is okay. Â So I asked for the manager. Â She went and spoke to him and he came to the table and said that yes, in fact it was their policy to remove the fries, but offered that maybe the server could have taken the whole plate back to the kitchen. Â I explained that in all the years that I have been dining out and all the times that I have been to Barleycorn's, I have never witnessed such a big deal made over THEIR mistake and .25 worth of sucky fries. Â I said that I would like the GM's name and the manager went off to collect a card. Â When he returned, he said that it was also their policy to not give the GM's card out without getting the customers name that wanted it. Â Really? Â That's complete crap. Â I told him to keep the card, because I've been there enough times to know the GM is Joe and I would just call him the next day. Â The manager walked off laughing, being completely rude and obviously not taking it seriously and then went up to the bar and appeared to be telling someone else the story and laughing.
The next day I called and spoke to Joe. Â He said that neither taking the fries or getting customers names was their policy. Â He apologized and said he would address it with his staff. Â For the inconvenience, he said he would send out gift certificates. Â Overall I felt like he also realized how stupid his manager and server were and was handling it the right way with the customer. Â That was about 2 months ago. Â Still waiting for that gift certificate, I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Â Maybe the problem is at the top...
I won't be back, and I will tell the story of the Barleycorn jackasses to everyone I know. Â Thanks Yelp for helping spread the word!
I eat here all the time, and often pull up a stool and bend an elbow. But the food is so-so. The burger I had tonight had no seasoning. Yeah it was "smothered" but the patty had no salt or pepper put on before it hit the grill. I like this place because I can walk there and the food is sometimes okay, but Joe needs to figure out that he needs to raise the food quality a bit to justify the prices.
