In the DC area for a few nights and was looking for some live jazz music.  When my husband and I walked in the place is small with two male jazz performers.  The environment was exactly what we were looking for.  Not very busy considering it was a Monday night, but the music was quite enjoyable.  The bar tender served our drinks, but never refilled our water, I had to ask for a refill.  We ordered a dinner to split since we figured it would be large enough considering the price.  After waiting 35 minutes for the chicken and rice dish, we were very disappointed in the size of the meal considering the preparation time.  There was maybe enough chicken to make up two chicken tenders or to fill half the size of your palm.  The rice was probably a cup full.  It was delicious but for the amount of money and  wait time, totally not worth it. Â
I saw the reviews for the macaroni and cheese and was tempted to try it, but considering we waited so long and I was still hungry, we decided to go some place else. Â The bartender seemed more occupied with rearranging the items in his bar than checking on us or our drinks. Â Not good service at all and would not go back for a dinner if I was in the area.
They did have some music downstairs, but we did not check it out. Â In my opinion this could be a really neat place to hang out and enjoy the music, if the service, both food and drink, were better handled. Â Also, there were only two other singles in the bar that ordered a meal, so that gives you an idea of 4 customers. Â The music was the best part of the night.
Black Fox continues to fill the swag notion for upper Dupont. Â A wonderful escape from the artificial neighborhood haunts, its history, charm and cultural vibe through live music and performance art make it a Dupont standout. Â Owner Jim McGlade is the true lifeblood of the lounge and his magic wand of goodtimes will cast its spell on you with a warm smile a kind word and first class service.
Review Source:Black Fox, nice to meet you! I am Kimberly and you will most likely be seeing a lot of me soon.
Besides their live jazz acts the bartenders have are VERY generous pour-ers!
I stopped by last night for a Filipino Young Professionals Meetup and it was the perfect spot for our group of 15 people. Not quite dive bar and not quite cocktail lounge, it had an easy going atmosphere that would please beer drinkers and handcrafted cocktail lovers a like.
I opted for the happy hour Prosecco ($7) but their signature drinks were definitely appealing. I'll be back this summer to sample their Cucumber Bath, made with Hendrick's Gin, Pimm's and Tonic.
A lot of yummy looking things were coming out of the kitchen but because I gave fried food for Lent I had to pass (THREE MORE DAYS).
Thank you Black Fox Lounge for keeping my champagne glass full and my company fabulous.
What to say about the Black Fox. I have to say that this is one place I love very much. Â If I could own my own little space with great jazz or cabaret singers, this would be the place to go. Â The owner, Jim is probably one of the nicest and kindest people who owned a club. Â I am sure money is great in owning a business but he is also there to make sure you have a wonderful wonderful time. The drinks are delicious. (Even if I have only ever had Vodka Cran) The food is amazing! Sometimes you can even have a special deal (like on St. Patrick's Day when he had the most decadent Corned Beef) -- They have trios, poetry slams, cabaret and now on Sundays... DRAG CABARET. That show is so cool. And the cast is excellent.
The food is so fabulous. Â Lobster Mac is rich and delicious. (I don't like Lobster but this is divine). Even something so simple as chicken tenders is done with flair. Oh and if you find yourself a little tipsy, order Rosa's Fries. They will sop up any booze. Â They are wonderful!
Okay I will stop raving about it. but just go. it is fun and great and cool and neat.
I am in DC for a week and have been here 2 nights in a row for a night cap.....Both nights I have met some great locals and have witnessed some great local talented musicians....I am staying 2 blocks from here so far the plan is to stop in each night for a night cap....This is the classic local corner bar...I did not realized until reading the reviews that there is more than one level...I plan to explore the bar more while here...The jazz that I saw tonight was class act...
Review Source:This review is for their new year's night.
So, we didn't want to pay a huge ticket price for our new year's night, and I saw that this place had live jazz for free. Sweet, I thought!
So we went at the beginning of the night and it was totally dead. Â Cute party accouterments, but ... dead. Â The music hadn't started even though it was advertised to have. Â My boyfriend wasn't enthralled, so we went to the Big Hunt (fancy I know) to drink for a while.
After midnight, we returned to the black fox with some friends. Â We went downstairs to check out the music, and contrary to what other reviews had led me to expect, we were greeted by a man in drag and a pink wig, singing...funny? songs. Â Everyone was pretty drunk, which was fine, but it was just weird. It was less dead, but still not exactly hopping. Â I had a gin and tonic, and we sat and had some laughs as a group. Â Afterwards, I remember some friends of mine going up and singing with the piano. Â
So, I don't know what it's normally like, but it wasn't quite as classy as it read on the reviews! Â The decor could use some updating, as well.
I had a great time here Saturday night listening to live jazz and sipping on a well-made amaretto sour at the tables across from the bar. The ambiance of this place is cozy, low-lit, and generally just the perfect place to grab a post-dinner cocktail with a date.
Their website tells you who will be playing on which night. It makes me sad I don't live in the area to experience different musicians on different nights!
A place to visit Monday with LIVE jazz and real food! Intimate setting but the music is excellent. The food was tastier than i had prepared myself for. Very good for "bad-food" -- which my Cajun shrimp and Crab mac-n-cheese looked nothing close to bar food.
A must visit for the music and the food. Drank a few drinks from the specials menus and they were all tasty.
It is very relaxing in here and the happy hour specials are fairly decent. White wine was available for $4 from 4-7. It's a dark atmosphere, somewhat quaint. The wings were delicious, fried to perfection and the loaded french fries were humongous. They were loaded with loads of cheese, bacon and sour cream. I could barely finish it all.
Review Source:Just passing by and stepped in for a drink (or two) with friends. Â Smallish bar and lounge area at street level. Â Jazz apparently downstairs but nothing going down at the time we were there. Â Waitress got our drink orders promptly and efficiently. Â They had a few single malt scotch whiskeys for me and sugary cocktails for my friends so all were happy. Â Would definitely come back to check out the music scene.
Review Source:BFL has joined the ranks of Eighteenth Street Lounge as my top jazz spots. The difference? BFL has no cover and is for an early evening, and ESL is all about the late night (for me anyway).
BFL is two levels and this review is for the bottom level only, which is a very cozy spot. On Freedom Fridays, CaShandra J sings some great jazz from 6-9pm. CaShandra is great, and so is her pianist....talented young dude. Bonus? Happy hour specials the whole time. The bananas foster is a-ma-zing! Note, have some cash cause you will want to tip the band in the clear jar that CaShandra isn't shy to point out ;-)
I stayed for a few mins after CaShandra to hear the next act (a guy) but he was just too foul mouthed for me. He does a combination of jokes and jazz, which folks were pouring in to hear, but I couldn't make myself stay for the jazz.
This place was..... interesting
We only stayed up stairs for a drink, but there were a lot of people going in out for the music down stairs. The drink I had was okay, a little too strong. The staff was not the greatest. never really checked on us, we had to go ask for our bill
This place was pretty dead on a Saturday when all the other bars were packed, we should have known
Great Jazz, Food, Drinks. Â Fun place. Â Was there last night with freinds and once again, spoiled by Roberto and his staff. Â Owner Jim makes you and everyone feel at home. Â Great shrimp, chicken and the best mac and cheese with a nice twist to it.
Drinks are Awesome especially The Nicholas!
Check out the music on the web site. Â They have great groups.
A 3 level bar, with live music on each level. Â Dig that. Â But the music on the main level was 2 guys in the window seemingly miles away from the bar. Â They were propped up like house plants on a shelf. Â Real strange.
Downstairs the music was driven by a grand piano and a stand up bass. Â But how's this: The piano had no mic, the bass... no mic, the singer, mic turned up to 10. Â Sounded like a spoken word concert, and not a jazz trio.
Didn't even go upstairs.
Had a drink at the main bar, and headed to Maddy's for a pub more my speed.
My friends loved this place. Everything we ordered, they enjoyed. They went on and on about the flavor and how mcuh they loved it. I, on the other hand, did not care for this place very much. Â The service was great. Our waiter was named Roberto.
I would recommend you try it for yourself. You may like it. I just wasn;t impressed.
No real complaints. I just didn't care for the food.
I've been here a couple of times for drinks after work with friends. The bar staff is friendly, the drinks are good, the atmosphere is relaxed. The happy hour prices (basic beers and wines, wells/rail liquor) are good prices for DC, but the regular drink prices are standard DC or higher ($12-14 a cocktail). This means riffraff like me and my friends really only come for happy hour. ;)
So if you want a nice area bar to have a nice drink with friends, your SO, or a date, the Black Fox is a good choice. If you want to get drunk with a big group, well, I imagine you can accomplish it at the Black Fox, but odds are you'll be better off doing it somewhere slightly less classy (and also cheaper).
Very cool lounge to grab a drink. I work in Dupont so I appreciate the proximity to the office and delicious baked brie. Oh, so delicious.
I went on a Thursday night, or maybe a Wednesday night. But, it was very empty considering it was prime happy hour time. But being able to be comfortable AND sit at a bar is great!
Black Fox is definitely one of my FAVORITE restaurants in DC that I have been to several times. :) My absolute favorite menu item is the BAKED BRIE (all my friends know this), but all food is good. The lounge has a wide variety of drink options with an open bar, all good tasting. Cocktails and mixed drinks are not my preferred beverage, but Black Fox still makes them appealing to me if I choose to go that route.
The ambiance is perfect for any mood. The crowd is diverse and live music is played both upstairs and down, always filled with great talent from different musicians. The service is caring, timely, and attentive. Many times that I've been to the restaurant, Jim, the general manager has also been there, friendly to guests and talking to them about their experience, trying to make it the most positive it can be.
When I was at Black Fox a couple of months before my birthday last summer, I started talking to Jim about how much I loved the restaurant and expressed an interest in having a joint birthday party in the bottom level at Black Fox. Jim was more than welcoming and connected me with Russ, another manager of the restaurant. Russ was excellent at communicating with me coordinating logistics and I had one of the BEST birthday parties ever at Black Fox!
I had about 60 guests throughout the course of the night (8pm-1am) and every single person had an amazing time. There was an incredibly talented jazz band who played most of the night which was one of my favorite parts (I tipped as much as I could!) :) Whether it was the early crowd who ordered dinner and drinks or the later crowd who just ordered drinks from the fast, excellent bartender, I received many positive compliments about the experience at Black Fox.
I recommend that EVERYONE go to Black Fox for any occasion. :)
Been here several times, and the owner is always there.
Good music, good food, and educated bartenders make for a good time.

Free live jazz, pricey drinks, and delicious food would pretty much sum this place up.
I went with a date and ordered the crab mac and cheese. It came out piping hot in a ramekin with a little salad on the side. The dish was well seasoned and fulfilling.
For drinks I had the DuPaul ($13) and the Cucumber bath($14). The DuPaul was fruity and reminded me of an island getaway, def a "girly drink". The Cucumber bath was more of a man's drink, it was crisp and very "cucumbery". Both drinks were originals.
If you're looking for a cute and classy date spot, this is it.
Went to Black Fox again with another coupon.
The one thing that this place has going for it are the drinks. That's about it. Because the food is horrendous.
So you remember from my last review that they had run out of the crab mac and cheese. This time, they had it, so I was very excited to try it. It came out on an oval ramekin in a generous portion. However, I was disappointed by the taste. The pasta was completely soaked in cheese, which I usually love. Except that it is apparently always amateur hour in the kitchen at Black Fox since the cheese, crab, and pasta just had no taste. No seasoning, or salt, to make anything stand out more. It was just very, very bland and cooked with no effort. I'm sure it takes them maybe 1 minute to prepare this in the back.
Person I was with ordered French cut chicken on a hot plate, which came out sizzling and smelling good. This too, was nothing outstanding, nothing to write home about.
The drinks are good here, always. Eat somewhere else, and come here for the drinks and the music.
Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be transported back to  the1960s in New York City?  Listening to incredible jazz, intimate low light setting, a bartender who knows your name, and the best lounge food around...
If you'd like to be transported to a place where Miles Davis and Louie Armstrong seem to come alive, then the Black Fox is for you! Â I love it here. Â Of course, I'm a bit biased b/c my husband plays jazz percussion here.. and the music is incredible.
Every 1st and 3rd Friday, you can find the incredible Aaron Myers singing purely heavenly jazz in the basement. Â Other nights, more jazz.
Great hummus, very sweet management, best dirty martini and manhatten's in town. Â This is a great place for a few friends to gather -- and everyone is welcome here!
Love it!
I went to DC for the first time over New Year's Eve weekend, and on my last night some of my friends brought me here. And I really have to say -- this place was REALLY the cherry on top of the cake that was my weekend at DC. We walked in right as the jazz band was wrapping up and taking a break. Our waiter told us that there was also live music in the downstairs section and encouraged us to check it out. Right as we were filing down the staircase, I heard this amazing voice hit this high note PERFECTLY. It was almost unreal! Apparently a troupe of actors who were performing in Billy Elliot decided to stop by and sing a variety of oldies, Christmas songs, and even praise music.
My friends and I enjoyed this amazing live music over a bottle of prosecco and the baked brie appetizer, which were both absolutely lovely. I would recommend eating the cheese quickly, though! I was so entranced by the music that the cheese went cold and rubbery and was hard to spread onto the crostinis. After the music was over, we headed back upstairs and ended up bumping into some strangers at the bar. They were both friendly, funny, and drunk, and we ended up just talking about all sorts of things -- pets, cities, alcohol, hair -- for the rest of the night.
Thanks for an amazing night at the end of an amazing trip. I am DEFINITELY coming back the next time I'm in town!
I went to Black Fox with a headache so I wasn't in the best of moods. I had a deal from 'buy with me' for $25 for $50 worth of food and drinks (this also includes alcohol people). If you ask them to make you a stiff drink, they will. It's pretty strong. My gf felt something after 1 cocktail.
The dishes were okay. I had the crab mac & cheese. I didn't really like it as much as I wanted to, but it was edible. My gfs ordered artichoke dip and she claimed it was one of the best she's had. Idk if I trust her taste lol. We also got another app and it was some ravioli type of pasta dish with tomato sauce. (God I'm such a bad yelper, I should be more specific here, but bare w/ me I'm @ work). Okay, I just looked it up, it was the lobster ravioli. Very small dish so i warn you, if you're looking to get full, this ain't it.
My server was friendly. He was gay. Gotta love the gays! The ground floor was pumping with house/trance music from cable tv, lol. My friend didn't like it so much. They have a downstairs and they have a live jazz band that plays.
Tip: Be very careful, I tripped as I was leaving (right by the door). Maybe I was just klutzy.
I came here because I never heard of it before and I was quite pleased! The interior is really nice and definitely one of the classier places in DC that I have been to. There is FREE live music and the crowd is very chill and low-key which is something different.
There are three floors, a basement a main level and the top level. The areas are not that big they are more narrow so seating space is limited. So get there early if you want a good spot. The specialty house drinks are delicious, the foxy lady drink is spectacular (theirs is a variation) and the typical vodka and rum-based drinks are good and they are reasonably priced, however, the specialty drinks are a little more expensive, but reasonable for DC.
The music is great. I am not a huge fan of jazz but the musician was really funny. A great place to relax with your friends and have a few drinks.
Well, what can I say, as a DuPont resident I am lovin' the existence of Black Fox Lounge in my area.
Besides it is very convenient for me, I like the decor of place, the jazzy live music, the ambiance, the friendly staff and the sophisticated crowd. Â
And I do like that strong name, Black Fox! :)
Not to long ago we had our private party at Black Fox Lounge, they had provided us with an excellent customer service and a wonderful live jazz performance!
Enjoying our night with a fun conversation and with all that fuzzy yummy bubbles that keep pouring, along with a groovy live music jazz  by fantastic duo musician the very talented pianist and bass player, also with some delicious appetizers.
And, on top of that I come home with a big bottle of a Red Wine! :) Yes! I did win the raffle! Fabulous! :) It was Malbec High note elevated! Lovin' it!
It is definitely go along with the jazzy event that night and it seems like, from the sound of the name High note, promising to enhance my current ability to sing! Which is already sounds good IMHO! Lol :)
Well, I recommend this place for sure, for all of you the young soul with grown up attitude, sophisticated, classy, jazzy and cool, this is definitely a place for you to unwind and hang out! :)
Have a blast! Salute! :)
Solid four stars....
A very nice bar here that is really "chill" and I like that scene. My wife is a Marketing Manager at Wyndham and she gets invited to all sorts of events. When we went to Black Fox the owner and general manager were quick to greet us and introduce themselves. There was even a live jazz band, and they were good.
After that, it was off to the races with an open bar. Free drinks, and believe me I went for the hard stuff - by the end of the night I was very chatty. Free food too, they brought out all of the appetizers along with some nice special dishes as well.
My wife and I have even been back once as paying customers and they treated us like royalty then too. The service is excellent at this bar/lounge. I deduct one star for it 's size and I thought that it was a little dark but other than that I would strongly recommend it.
3.75 Stars
Easily the most refined bar/lounge in Dupont Circle with a plush interior and well dressed crowd. Â The murals of Bath that adorn one side of the bar were salvaged from the old Circle Bar at the Watergate Hotel. Check them out by looking at the mirror over the bar; it gives the illusion of depth and perspective. Â There's also a basement bar with exposed brick and a baby grand.
Their signature drink, the Black Fox, a combination of Sazerac rye, dark creme dark Crème de Cacao, and orange bitters was an interesting blend of tastes, and a bit too sweet for me, but fairly priced at $11.  The Cucumber Bath, on the other hand, Hendricks gin, Pimm's and tonic, seemed like the perfect summertime drink:  refreshing and best enjoyed outdoors. The cocktails don't rise up to the level Gibson, Cork or the Passenger, but with the passing of Town and Country, this is the most sophisticated spot Dupont has to offer.  An impressive 34 wines by the glass, all priced $10 and under.  No draft beers, but about a half dozen bottles, including Green's gluten free beer.
The live jazz is a nice touch although, having a duo play in the front door is kind of awkward. Â In sum, it will not be to every one's taste, but if you're looking for something a bit more "adult" then this might be the place for you.
The Black Fox is a very comfortable, clean, quiet, lounge environment that's excellent for when you want to be able to converse.  Think of  it as a step up from a pub for a little more sophisticated crowd.  This is the place you go when big crowds and disco beats seem like way too much fuss.
The downstairs is filled with leather sofas where one can often enjoy live jazz musicians. Â If it's too loud there, though, you can still enjoy the music from upstairs. Â Their bar menu is very nice. Â So far I've particularly enjoyed their shrimp and pasta. Â They also make wonderful soup. Â It's a shame that more bars in DC don't serve food.
The staff is above and beyond, the best asset this place has. Â They go the extra mile to make you feel like family. Â It's not often you can walk into a bar on an off night and instantly be brought into the fold. Â This is a gem.
The only saving grace is the good happy hour deals. Â 3 different white wines and 3 different red wines for $4 and a handful of beers for $4. Â This is above and beyond the typical DC happy hour where all you get is a $4 Miller Lite option or, just maybe, $1 off all drinks. Â
I didn't go downstairs, I stayed upstairs and was kinda underwhelmed by the decor- it feels like the standard bar area of a restaurant your grandparents take you to. Â I also found it quite annoying that they only had small tables, although they gave no attitude about you pushing the tables together. Â
Wait staff? Â Ehh.... our waitress was alright, but looked kinda peeved. Â We also had to ask for water three times, but we did finally get it. Â The bar staff was pretty terrible. Â I'm a 5'9 redhead and felt absolutely invisible each time I attempted to order a drink. Â Once I was finally given some attention, I was helped nicely and without attitude, but it seriously took me much longer than it should have considering the place wasn't that crowded.
Food: Â we ordered spinach artichoke dip which took a long time to come out. Â It was alright, but nothing that blew my socks away enough to change my opinion on the place.
Crowd: Â A pretty constipated-looking bunch with annoying laughs.
Verdict: Â Come in if you want a good happy hour special but expect it to take you awhile. Â Don't bother with food.
This place is probably more like a 3.5 but for uniqueness in the area I'm bumping this mofo up to a 4 star. Went for a chill night and since we aren't drinkers had some of their appetizer/entrees. We went with the artichoke dip, lobster ravioli, and mac n cheese and crabcake.
The dip came with pita wedges and were hot which was nice considering it such a rarity. Pretty flavorful too. The lobster ravioli had a decent amount of ravioli in it and the mac n cheese was good but the crabcake was the best thing we had. The mac n cheese and crab cake come with a fresh salad. I also thought they would be mix together but they come separate so you have the option to mix it yourself, which is what we did.
After the food, we headed downstairs for live jazz music. Great atmosphere and very chill. Highly recommend if you're looking for an intimate, relaxed atmosphere.
Good stuff.
The Black Fox is a cool place to spend late at night on a weekend, listening to good music and enjoying a cocktail. Â The bartenders are very good at their job and the atmosphere is very cool, somewhat upper-class, but the attitude is nothing like that. Â The service is excellent, knowledgeable about their booze and capable of quickly making a drink while chatting with you.
The liquor selection is good, and the prices aren't bad for a place that seems this nice ($11 for cocktails, I've paid more at worse places in this area). Â The band, an upright bass, electric guitar and vocalist, played about four feet from us, but it wasn't so loud that it was deafening, even with the amp. Â They played mostly classy covers of rock and R&B classics (The Impressions, Van Morrison, etc).
No matter what day or time you walk into the Black Fox Lounge, it is always lit perfectly and that inviting glow sets the mood for fluid conversation alongside libation. Â An equally charming feature of this den is that you are likely to find the owner casually meeting and greeting patrons - you can't miss his presence and he won't dismiss yours either. Â
The bartenders out-clever most others found in the area and are truly specialists, equipped to give instinctively strong recommendations off the list and menu. Â The open door and live jazz are alluring accents to a soft and sly Saturday evening. Â When you walk in, you are not pounced with pretension or fuss - just welcomed in to enjoy fare in a comfy ambiance. Â The Black fox truly lives up to its namesake - a rare find in Dupont that really breaks away from the pack.
If it weren't for the fact that they don't put their "special event" calendar online (and if they do, they don't keep it up to date enough) this would be a 3.5 or 4 rating.
Unfortunately I had gone to their website prior to heading out here on my third leg of a night out and while they had listed for that evening Jazz starting at 9pm they were closed for a private function till 10pm.
I returned about 10 after 10 and they were almost open. Around 10:15 they started letting people in and about 10:30 they started up the Jazz. I really enjoyed the music and the glasses of wine were great.
Also partook in the baked bree. It was delicious. With it came many pieces of bread and an assortment of fruit and veggie like things. It came with prunes...I think...though and that didn't make any sense. If they were dates (which would make sense) they were the oddest set of dates ever served.
Great vibe to the place, super chill but not super quiet, interesting things on the wall that one can discuss and ponder on the meaning of. In the back there are couch like things.
Id definitely give it another go ahead but I might call ahead that afternoon to ensure that music was going to be as scheduled.
Light jazz pipped into the exposed brick-backed classic bar. High, leather bound bar stools dot the down stairs bar, while lush couches marinated in the back of the space. You haven't even settled into your chair and their are drink menus and a paper coaster welcoming you to take your time and peruse. The bartender makes eye contact to indicate, "just flag me when you are ready to talk", and when you do, he'll act as tender, talker, and everything in between.
This place can get another star if they change up the liquor they use for their mixes. Although the mixed cocktails well assembled, they lack the effortless crisp that better quality booze brings. Stick to simple and classic drinks made with top shelf; it's worth the extra $4.
This place is a great local for the late night drink. Maybe somewhere to go to take the evening down a notch (so NOT on a Friday night), with a good friend and a thoughtful cocktail. I haven't tasted the food, or been there on a night with live music, but I think I'll reserve this space for those nights where I act like the guy I hope I'm becoming.....just a little more classy then the guy I've been, but not old enough to be they guy I will hopefully be!!
The crowd: Â Everyone was super nice. A nice young dame who looked about 60 years old bought us a round of drinks. But be warned - this is not a place to go if you're a 23 year old straight man looking to get wasted on a Friday night and embark upon shenanigans. This place will make you feel young.
The service: The 60 year old grandma could have brought drinks to me faster.
Facilities: Really really ridiculously good smelling. Like it had been frebreezed at least 5 times in the past hour. If you really need to go to the bathroom and you're walking up Connecticut, you should stop by here and pretend like you're going to order a drink. This is the black fox's saving grace.
To sum it up, they played smooth jazz the whole time. If you're looking for a good time, just stay at home and play brick breaker next to an ice cold chest of PBR's.
GREAT SPOT,
the food was good, i went on a monday a couple of weeks after the opening....the bartender was good also ..... i was really impressed by the martini i had....it was the one with calvados and grandmarnier....i loved every second of it and it became a great first date with my new Boy friend
We slipped into the Black Fox one night a few weeks ago around 10:30 after a dinner party, in the mood for a night cap and the ambiance of what we understood was a cool jazz club. Â We'd heard a little buzz around the neighborhood about the opening of a new club, but not from anyone who had actually been there.
We walked into the joint smack into the musicians who were jammed into the front hallway. Â The sound was deafening, and hardly a pleasant greeting. (More on the music in a moment.)
We almost turned back, but I said to Hizzoner, "It should be better at the back of the bar." Â We walked through the almost-empty bar, but there was no improvement. Â The sound roared all the way back to the end of the bar. Â Hoping that the next musical number would be better, we sat down and after perusing the drinks menu, shouted our order to the bartender. Â I ordered a glass of champagne, and he ordered a house special concoction that contained Pimm's Cup, Hendrick's Gin, and tonic -- which was not very successful. Hendrick's Gin is a super-premium spirit, and adding Pimm's Cup to it is a waste of good gin. Â Whoever thought this one up does not know very much about cocktails. In general, the "signature cocktails" are pretty bizzare and in my opinion, probably undrinkable (e.g., Maker's Mark & Creme de Menthe; Grand Marnier & Apple Jack; Rye, Creme de Cacao & Bitters).
The bad music -- a sort of 1980's junk-funk jazz that included covers of Stevie Wonder and Beatles tunes -- continued, at what seemed like an ever-increasing volume level. Â Bad covers of good tunes, with lots of guitar strumming and throbbing head-splitting percussion... we quickly finished our drinks and decided to leave. Â As we were putting on our coats, the band finished its set and immediately started breaking down their gear. Â Teen hits of the 1960s in their original covers immediately came up on the bar's sound system. Â Does this bar not understand the concept of a quiet venue where patrons can enjoy good music and good drinks?
On the plus side, the bar is well-stocked with premium brands, decent wines, and decent prices, and on balance, the physical surroundings are pleasant and comfortable. Â
The Dupont area needs a classy bar that offers quality cocktails and a pleasant place to hang out and socialize. Â The Black Fox Lounge has great potential, and the owners can expect this to be very popular and successful once they decide on their market, and fine-tune music to fit that market. Â I suggest they have some theme nights with recorded music -- a Sinatra-style night (American standards), a Broadway tunes night, and a R&B night, for example. Â I'd sit and drink Hendrick's martinis for a few hours listening to Sinatra, and I know many of my friends would as well!
Black Fox Lounge: we are rooting for you!
